Hello fellow tiny human docs and welcome to our first true episode of Peds in a Pod. I'm Candace and I'm Taylor and today we are going to be talking about developmental milestones in the newborn period. As we know at this age the majority of a newborn's responsibilities include eating, sleeping.
and pooping. But there are a couple additional milestones that they're required to have at this age to be considered developmentally normal. Things that they're supposed to do are sustain a period of wakefulness with feeds, calm with an adult voice, have an involuntary grasp, and keep their hands in a fist.
Remember, a few things that this baby needs is a hepatitis B IM, as long as he or she is greater than 2 kilograms, a rithromycin I ointment to protect against gynecoccal conjunctivitis, and a vitamin K shot.
Babies are allowed to lose up to 10% of their birth weight prior to going home from the hospital, but there are a couple other things that you should check while they're still there. Make sure to check out their hearing, get a newborn screen, which will take about five to seven days to come back.
Check out your pre- and post-ductal SATs to monitor for congenital heart disease. Perform a hip exam to check for hip dysplasia, especially if your baby was breech. Perform a type-in screen, get bilirubin levels, and check out an RPR. Also remember to look for a red light reflex bilaterally because an absence of that at this age is a red flag for retinoblastoma. Some normal reflexes at this age are rooting, suck, Babinski, grasp.
moro, and a tonic neck reflex. For our more visual learners, check out our study sheets on our Instagram page at atpetsinapodcast or our Twitter page at atpetsinapod for more information. That is, after you park your car of course.
