This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all the news from Patriots training Camp. Well, I do still watch the news. Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com have you covered? What did I miss yesterday? Now here to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots dot com All right, August first, and the pads came on today on Monday. This is might do so, joined by Paul Pirillo,
Evan Lazar Patriots dot com. We're here to get you caught up on everything that happened today at Patriots practice. And guys, the pads came on. We saw some physicality amp up um, but a little bit films was felt to me a little bit like the pace was back. Start with you, Paul, you know what stood out to you today? Just generally, Yeah, I agree. It was a little bit of a slow you know, uh, you know, ramp up again after they had a day off on Sunday.
But there was I thought some some physicality with the receivers, in the in the defensive backs that you hadn't seen at all because of you know, for obvious reasons, without the pads on. I thought the one matchup in particular that kept coming up to me was Malcolm Butler and DeVante Parker. I thought those two guys when at each other pretty good. I thought Parker made some big plays over him, but rather than get down on him, I
thought Butler responded with a couple of nice plays. Later on one when they got down in the red zone, it looked like he came away with a nice breakup down there. So it was a little back and forth with those guys. I know, Evan, you watched a little bit more of the of the big guys up front as you guys you probably don't know yet. I really don't have any interest in that, so I'm going to leave that all to you. Evan. You were locked in on the defensive offensive line. They're doing some kind of
combo blocking drills, some one on ones. What stood out to you down there in those matchups today? Yeah, first day it pads. You gotta watch the big guys, right, I mean, that's that's what we're all like, you say, so, kind of seeing the trenches. I think the number one thing that stood out to me today was Christian Barmore basically beating every single person that lined up across from him. Consistently,
and obviously this is coming off his rookie season. It just continues to be the same story with him, where he is an absolute disrupt or, whether it's against the run, against the past. A couple of welcome to the NFL moments for a few Patriots rookies and one on ones against Christian Barmer, Cole Strange, Cody Russy learned the hard way what it's like to go up against number ninety.
And if you look at the whole picture here for the Patriots defense, I would say Barmore is the one guy that if he can elevate his game to a Pro Bowl, all Pro type of player, it changes how they're going to be dynamic, playmaking wise for the entire defense. So also to it, a few guys come off pup today, which a good sign. Jonathan Jones was supposed to call him Julie's Peppers, not quite Jabrill Peppers, and finally Miles Bryant. So three guys coming off seemed like they were kind
of getting involved a little bit. Always good to get those guys off. Still, James White, I think, is the only one remaining on the pup list. NFI list remains Jason Hines and Andrew Stubert A couple. I mean, Paul, you mentioned the big play. I thought that was the play of the day, the deep pass to Parker. Parker shook loose and got and got free. Overall, though, doesn't really feel like I think we're all hoping for a
huge bounce back day today. Seems like the offense kind of working through some things still and quite have the didn't feel like it they alli sudden hit a new gear today. Yeah, a couple things, I would say. The first one from that big play that you were talking about, the play of the day. It's the first time I saw DeVante Parker really get open in this camp. And then that was something that that opened my eyes, like okay,
here we go. No, you know, I get that he has the you know, the strong hands and the ability to make contested catches. We know that he has that, but now that's something that was a little bit different today. He got a step down the sideline and beat Butler pretty good on that deep ball. So that was good, and I agree with you. I thought there was some periods of offensive success, but not anything sustained. Again, I
think it's still a work in progress. Nice to see them more in the middle of the field, so you could sprinkle in some of that downfield stuff not all condensed into the red zone. I sensed a little bit more frustration from Mac. You made the point during practice when we were watching Mike and we make a lot of those witty comments back and forth to each other about how you didn't see as much of the tennis
guy from Mac at this time around. You know, there was some reports he was pretty pretty upset with him. Weren't just reports. We saw it when him walking off the field on Saturday after throwing that pick to Kyle Dugger. Didn't really see a lot of that visible frustration. Today. You could see him a little bit with the head down at times, but bouncing back, continuing to fight. Parker talked about that ability to sort of turn the page immediately being important After the Mac and Row, it just
it feels a little more mature. I'm sure he's frustrated, but he's just not being demonsibly showing it. And I think, you know, guys kind of feed off that energy, so I think that's a at least a good sign. It hasn't been great. Terrence Mitchell coming up with a nice interception Evan for you what else you know? Just overall stood out in terms of the team periods. Well, I
thought to talk about Mac a little bit. When they spread it out and they went shotgun, he hit Parker down the sideline for forty fifty yard go ball there when they were doing the stuff from under center. A lot of the stuff that they're doing is I think a little bit new for him, honestly, and that might be some of the tweaks that they're making to the scheme paying dividends there where he went over after he threw the pick, Terrence Mitchell went over to Matt Patricia.
They had a conversation about what he saw, what Patricia saw, and some of the concepts, especially from under center, seem a little bit like a work in progress mentally for
Mac Jones right now. Whereas when they spread it out and you see Alabama Mac right spread the field three wide receiver and kind of let him go, he looked comfortable pretty much again the entire practice, especially on that throw to Parker, which I thought was probably his best throw training camp so far, especially in eleven on elevens for sure. And I will just real quick one last thing I thought Bailey Zappi threw the ball really well today.
You know, he's been a little inconsistent with his accuracy, but today I thought he had longer stretches of positive play. Dropped one in and it was just a one on one drill. It wasn't even a seven on seven, but perfect throw to Taekwon Thorwton down the sideline, over the outside shoulder on a deep ball. It was pretty good coverage in still able to fit it in there. I thought he was more consistently accurate today than at any
point in camp. Unfortunately I wrote about him on Saturday soufesn't really matter, of course, That's always how it works out right, It's all about me, you know. That One final thing to mention too. You know we're just coming out to practice. We were Bailey, Sorry, Bailey, Jake Bailey to stick with the Bailey's signing contract extension for a few years. So that'll help the Patriots cap space overall a little bit. We will be back tomorrow. Pads staying on.
Matt Patricia did mention before practice that the intensity was ratchet up as much. You think the pads are coming on and they're just gonna go for it. I think that there is a little bit of easing into it. I'm sure tomorrow we'll get even more intense, and of course we will be back to brief you guys on exactly what went down. So that will do it for us for today and we'll see you tomorrow after the next practice. Thank you for downloading this podcast, Subscribe on Apple,
