Intro / Opening

Wanting more doesn't make you greedy. Being greedy makes you greedy. These are the sage words of my therapist, Leo. He shared them years ago when I first had the idea for 5 Bridges and I wanted to give it away for free. He strongly advised me against it, and I'll share why in just a little bit. But first, let's dig into the protein and potatoes of this episode. What are we talking about today? Well, the whole premise of the episode is this, by serving ourselves, we can better serve others.

The idea is that when we invest in our own professional and personal progress, We have more resources to be able to help others and really drive our mission forward. So today we're gonna break that into three different areas. The first is that there is plenty to go around, so we do not need to be worried about taking more than our fair share. The second thing is that being of service doesn't mean that you have to go without.

And third, we're gonna talk about the fact that having a position of power and authority actually gives you more influence to have a greater impact. Welcome to Passion and Profits Without Burnout. I'm your host, Jacob Moore. I'm a speaker coach, childhood suicide law survivor and filmmaker who left Hollywood to follow my heart of service. I've helped tens of thousands of people find the balance in their life between passion and profits.

I'm gonna show, I'm gonna teach you how to build a responsive, resilient, and impactful community and organiz. All without burning out. Let's get started. So the, the real point here, here's everything I'm going to share today, is that when we are of service to others, there is a natural, just energetic drain that happens. This can happen in our work.

This can happen in our personal lives, happens with our partners, with our children, and we may not mind or even notice that energetic drain that happens. But it still happens. Now, some of us are more sensitive than others to it. Some of us need more, you know, personal time, more self care, more investment in ourselves, in other to, in order to give to others. Some of us are, are able to give to a point where it, it feels almost superhuman or it looks from the outside, almost superhuman.

My argument is that even if you are able to tolerate it, there's still an energetic drain and there is an area of your life that is affected and whether it is affecting you right now today, and you notice it maybe through lethargy. Maybe by not having the type of lifestyle that you want, perhaps it is, you know, not having the type of personal or professional relationships maybe you haven't accomplished or gotten to see the things in your life that you wanna see.

It may be something that affects you down the road and has a compounding effect and builds up over time, regardless. There is always an energetic drain that happens when we are focused on others, when we are serving others. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't do that. All I want you to understand is that we need to have balance in that there needs to be a scale balance between our output and our input.

So let's talk about this first point now, the fact that there's plenty to go around and we don't have to worry about taking more than our fair share. So how can I say this?

There is plenty to go around

Well, it's, it's very simple. There is. A renewable, untapped pool of energy that exists in the universe. And the source of that is up to you to decide. I am not here to debate what that renewable source of energy is, where it comes from. Your own personal beliefs can dictate that source of. Right, and I'm not talking about our, our little solar system. I'm not talking about our sun. I am talking about the greater universe at large. There is an energetic source and it is renewable.

When we re receive from this source, it can be. It can be, you know, food that is grown through the sunlight or from the water or from the air, from the earth that's provided to us. This can be spiritual energy. This can be psychic energy, however you believe, or whatever plane you, you exist on. Energy is coming into your being on one or multiple levels. Okay. So again, I'm not here to debate what that energy is or at what rate you receive it or what that looks like.

It's just a simple fact that we are constantly receiving. Another way to say that is we are, we are constantly taking, taking from the universe, taking from the earth, taking energy from others, right? And when we take in, our bodies consume that. So in the form of, of eating, right we take that in, we consume it our bodies break it down into energy, and then there is energetic output and there is waste. That energetic output can come in a lot of different forms.

It can come in the form of brain power. The things that we think that we say just the processes that happen in our body that can come in the form of work, physical labor. It can come in, you know, the way that we are interacting in the world, our, our emotional energy. So what we're taking in goes in our. Do something with it and then we put it out in the world. Okay? So this happens over and over and over again constantly all the time.

And you times a billion that's happening with all the people on this earth, and that exists in the universe, right? As far as we know, there are people here on this earth, maybe other places, right? Okay. Then think about all the plants, all the animals, all of the other living beings on this world and in this universe, right? So we're all constantly bringing in, bringing in, bringing in and putting out. And finally, when, when we die and our bodies return to the earth, right?

We decompose and then we become nutrients for other animals or other living. This process continues. The earth is also putting energy back out into the solar system, into the universe as well, right? So there is this, this cycle of, of renewable energy that's happening constantly. So how does that apply to our professional and personal progress? Well, if you think about it, then everything that exists on this.

Everything in your life, everything that you're looking at everything that you eat, consume, buy, watch on tv, it all is a result of the energy that is. Put out into this universe, this, this renewable energy source that exists in the universe. Everything comes from that, right? So I'm looking at a, a screen right now. I have a microphone in front of my face. There's a camera up here. All of these things, all the components, they all came because of a result of that energy.

So in a way, it's all created from nothing. It's all the result of simple energy. So are the resources in our lives. When we look at things like our roles at work, the organizations that we work for, money, other resources that make the world go around, it's a construct of energy. Our imagination. And what we're able to do with our energetic output. In this world, everything is created and that means it can also be destroyed.

But doesn't it also make sense though that if it's all created that there is an endless supply of it? Now I don't, I don't want to get into debates about. Renewable resources on this earth and the way that we are using resources and what, you know, our impact is on the environment. That's a different conversation. But for the sake of here right now today, I, I want you to understand that you making more money, you having more influence, having a higher position of power.

You simply gaining more in your life is not taking away from others. You may be taking from the pool, but you are not taking from others. So I would invite you to remove any guilt that you have around

Taking from the pool of energy, not from others

personally advancing your life. When I made my first a hundred. It was the result of a huge mind set shift to this effect, which is, I'm not stealing from anyone. So I grew up going to a small Bible church that my grandfather was a pastor of, and my grandfather is a, a man, a heart of service. I learned that that way of life from him, and he has never taken a dime. To be the pastor of this church other than love offerings that are, that are given to him by his, by his community.

So I learned from a very early age that in order to give to others, You do not receive for that, you do not get back in the form of monetary compensation. So when I started no stigmas, I did not start with the idea of, Hey, I need

The starving servant mentality

to, I need to be able to make money. I need to be able to have, you know, a good living to be able to provide for myself and others. I didn't go into it with that mindset. There was always a sense of guilt around asking for more or wanting more, and the fact is, is I limited myself for so many years because of this false sense that if I somehow advanced or grew, that others were going to.

And the, the truth of it is, and this leads us into the second point, is that being of service to others doesn't mean we have to go without. In fact, when we have more resources, we are able to give more. When we have more energetic input in our lives, when we have more bandwidth. We have more to give. And this was the conversation that I was having with my therapist, Leo, when I was talking about five Bridges.

I was at first going to make it a program of no stigmas and, and give it away for free and. He was like, why, why, why are you doing that? You, you've been talking about the fact that you have financial struggles, that you have to do all these odd jobs to make ends meet while trying to run this nonprofit. Why do you want to create something else to give it away? Why can't you personally gain from it? And I told him it. It just felt greedy.

It felt greedy to give this knowledge something that, you know, I feel like was a direct download. From the universe and, and how can I charge people for it? And he shared being greedy is what makes you greedy, Jake.

Gain to give more

You have a heart of service, so don't you think if you have more resources, you're gonna give more. And it was like a lightning bolt. It was like, well, of course, of course if I have more, I'm gonna give. I mean, that's why, that's why I want more, is to be able to give more. And guess what? The first year that I made a hundred k, what I did the, the very next year was stop taking a salary from no stigmas.

I, I stopped receiving income from the organization because, a, I didn't need it, but b. I don't need to keep taking from that organization. I can now let someone else have that position and they can make that money. I can go over here and do this, and that's exactly how I have built Five Bridges and the rest of my business is by simply gaining more so that I have more to give.

This leads me to the third point, which is that having a position of power and authority gives you more influence to have a greater impact. If you are a good person, which I know you all are, you're, you're here, you're listening to this show. So you are someone who wants to be of service, who wants to have an impact. So of course you are investing in others.

If you remove the mindset that you aren't allowed to have, dot, dot, dot, and just simply go from the perspective of serving others, and you say, Hey, if I advance myself, if I advance my career, if I advance my family unit or my organization, I get to do more good. I get to have more resources to invest. You are a person who has ideas, you have a story, you have a mission, and they not only need to be heard, but by sharing these things, you can help others. You can help support others.

That's how everything started with me. I, I started sharing my story and doing that I found was supportive to others. And the more I shared the. That idea grew and the more those resources grew, and when I started getting paid to speak, guess what? I could do more free talks for people who couldn't afford it. And when I started to take salary for no stigmas, guess what that meant? That I had more bandwidth to be able to give more to the organization, to the point that I ended.

Just being a volunteer for my organization. Now, as Five Bridges started to grow and we had more and more resources, I could then start to hire other people, help them advance their career. And now, you know this, this curriculum that we charge for, that we license to organizations, to companies, and we help, you know, corporations with their employee wellness now gives us the resource. To give it away for free to the people who need it.

So the more my career has advanced, the more my business has advanced, the more my generosity has advanced, because I have more resources to give. Don't be afraid to take the stage. Don't be afraid to. For that raise. Don't be afraid to invest in your career development. Take that class. Say yes to new opportunities. Ask the universe for more, because the more that comes to you, I guarantee, the more you will have to give to others.

Now, that's just a brief overview of this idea that your personal and professional progress. Are actually a great way to invest in giving to others. During the next episode, we're gonna talk more about this from the perspective of sustainable self care and the importance of investing in your own wellness.

And we'll talk about that energetic bank, but also you know, physically what's happening for you and how to create this wellness action plan to give yourself what you need to be able to truly be of service. For the long run so you don't burn out. That's where sustainable self care comes in. Now these two ideas, professional and personal progress and sustainable self care are two of my four, my core four of impact leadership.

So if you miss the first two episodes on this the first one is Mission Mindset, and the second one is Compassionate Culture. So these two episodes, professional and Personal Progress and sustainable Self Care are two of my core four for impact leadership. So if you missed the previous two, which are mission, mindset, and. Compassionate culture, go back and check those out as well. So this is a four part series talking about my core for, for impact leadership.

And there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with taking pride in accomplishing something for yourself, and the more you. The more you have, the more you have to give.
