STACY

Welcome everyone to our Licensure Exams podcast and today's episode of Common Exam Challenges . You know it's like trying to guess the secret ingredient in a recipe . If the question is about a dessert , you can probably eliminate I don't know sushi as an option but if you see chocolate and cherries as choices , those are some pretty strong contenders .

LINTON

I don't know . I don't know , stacey , I bet Kai could make any dessert . He could make a dessert sushi , but I get your point . Another issue is that test takers have trouble with a lack of familiarity with the exam format . Many folks underestimate the importance of dedicating time to practicing with sample questions and simulated exams .

STACY

That's right , and engaging in regular practice helps build confidence , reinforce content , knowledge and develop a sense of timing and pacing , like we've been talking about . By encountering a wide range of question types and difficulty levels , you can become more comfortable with the exam format and better understand what to expect on test day .

It's a little like a systematic desensitization .

LINTON

Absolutely . In addition to practicing with sample questions , it's also beneficial to review your incorrect answers and analyze your reasoning after you complete a practice exam .

This process of self-reflection and error analysis can help identify patterns and mistakes such as you might find that you're always misreading the questions , overlooking key details or falling prey to common cognitive biases .

STACY

Well , that is an excellent point , linton . Now the last issue that we want to address is a big one , probably the biggest actually Self-doubt , and this can be a significant hindrance to test-taking success .

Many test-takers , despite their extensive knowledge and preparation and you know , many therapists have actually been doing therapy for years and years and years before they actually have to take this exam , they might start second guessing themselves during the exam , leading to a lack of confidence in their choices and unnecessary changes in answers .

LINTON

Right , so that self-doubt can be really a powerful force undermining your trust and your abilities and your judgment . One way to combat self-doubt is to practice positive self-talk and affirmations . Remind yourself of your hard work , dedication and the extent of your knowledge , and know that you have been taking the exam from the time you sat down to start studying .

STACY

Mm-hmm . Changing answers based on self-doubt can lead to unnecessary errors . So you really only want to change your answer if you realize that you made a mistake in reading comprehension and that you're confident in your new answer selection ?

LINTON

And , above all else , it's important to maintain perspective and remember that the licensing exam is just one step in your professional journey . While performing well is ideal , a single exam does not define your worth or competence as a therapist .

Licensure exams are challenging by design and it's not uncommon for individuals to require multiple attempts to achieve success . Attempts to achieve success , maintaining a growth mindset and viewing setbacks as an opportunity for learning and improving can help alleviate some of the psychological pressures associated with these high-stake testing exams .

STACY

Absolutely London , and it's also worth noting that seeking support from peers , mentors or professionals can be incredibly valuable . Connecting with other people who have undergone the licensure process can provide you with a sense of camaraderie and offer valuable insights and advice .

Now , before we sign off , we want to review the practical exercises and resources that we've talked about to help you further develop your test-taking skills .

LINTON

Simulate exam condition . Engage in regular practice with sample questions and full length simulated exams to build your confidence , reinforce your contact knowledge and develop a sense of timing and pacing . This helps you become really familiar with the exam format and what to expect on test day . So when you sit down , you're already there . You know what's going on .

Second is to eliminate incorrect answers . When faced with challenging multiple choice questions , systematically evaluate each answer choice . Just don't pick the one that you think oh yeah , that's the right one . Eliminate those that are clearly incorrect or irrelevant and focus on the remaining options to increase your chances of selecting the correct answer .

When studying , review and reflect on mistakes . Seriously , this is like going back to school . Don't skimp on this . After practicing with sample questions , review your incorrect answers and analyze your reasoning . Identify patterns and mistakes such as misreading questions or overlooking key details , and work on addressing those areas of deficits that you may have .

Maintain a positive mindset . Combat self-doubt by practicing . Positive self-taught and affirmations Only change your answers if you are confident in your new selections . Remember that the licensure exam is just one step on your professional journey and setbacks and are opportunities for your learning and improvement .

Use study groups and support networks If you haven't already , you need to join or form a study group with peers who are also preparing for the licensing exam . Discussing challenges , topics , sharing strategies and supporting each other will enhance your understanding and reduce that feeling of isolation .

STACY

Now , with the right strategies and consistent practice , you truly can overcome any test-taking challenges and succeed on your licensure exam . And remember , as we always say it's in there .
