Speaker 1

Hello there and a warm welcome to our podcast on passing the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Narrative Exam . We are here at counselingexamcom with the aim of offering you crucial insights that might help you gain those extra few points that might tip the scales in your favor . Remember , you already have what it takes . It's in there , you can do it .

Today we are going to revisit treatment techniques used in person-centered therapy and give an example of how a therapist may use the technique . 1 . Active listening This technique involves the therapist attentively listening to the client , including their spoken words , tone , body language and emotional state .

The therapist shows their understanding by paraphrasings , summarizing and mirroring the client's expression . Example the therapist might say it sounds like you're feeling overwhelmed by your work responsibilities . 2 .

Actualizing tendency This concept is based on the belief that every individual has an innate tendency to develop in a positive direction and reach their full potential . In this context , the therapist encourages clients to believe in their capacity to grow and change . Example you have faced such situations before and I trust you can handle this one too . 3 .

Client empowerment The therapist encourages the client to recognize their strengths , abilities and potential , fostering a sense of self-efficacy and empowerment . Example you've already made significant progress in handling your stress ? How can you use these skills to manage your current situation ? 4 .

Client self-determination The therapist respects the client's autonomy , allowing them to make their own decisions and lead the therapeutic process . Example it's up to you to decide which issue you want to tackle first in our sessions . 5 .

Congruence , genuineness or authenticity This refers to the therapist being genuine and transparent in their thoughts and feelings during the session , helping to build trust with the client . Example I appreciate your openness in sharing your struggles with me and I genuinely want to support you . 6 .

Empathetic understanding The therapist shows empathy towards the client by trying to understand their emotions and perspectives without judgment . Example it must have been really tough for you to go through such a difficult time . 7 .

Encouragement of self-exploration The therapist encourages the client to delve into their feelings , thoughts and behaviors to better understand themselves . Example can you tell me more about what made you feel that way ? 8 .

Focus on the here and now The therapist encourages the client to focus on their present feelings and thoughts rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future . Example what emotions are you feeling right now , in this moment ? 9 .

Fostering a safe therapeutic environment The therapist creates an environment where the client feels comfortable , safe and understood , allowing for open communication . Example this is a safe space to share anything you want , without fear of judgment . 10 .

Nondirectiveness The therapist avoids directing the client towards specific actions or thoughts , instead facilitating the client's own self-discovery and personal growth . Example I am here to support you , but the direction we take is completely up to you . 11 .

Self-disclosure Occasionally , therapists may share personal experiences or feelings relevant to the client's situation to build a more authentic and empathetic relationship . Example when I faced a similar situation , i felt a lot of anxiety too . It's a normal reaction . 12 .

Unconditional positive regard The therapist chose absolute acceptance and respect towards the client , regardless of what they say or do . Example no matter what you're going through or what feelings you're experiencing , you have my complete acceptance and respect .
