Caitlin's Interrogation and Spy Revelations

Uh-huh. What you need to know is that we have had no contact, no satellite signal for over three and a half hours. Hours. This is so f Fucked up. No. Even if it didn't crash, it would have run out of fuel by now. So we can now say with a degree of certainty. And it's gone. In the scene. So what I need you all to do is contact your Are you okay? ご視聴ありがとうございました Interview with Caitlin Leigh. Whoa. WGT 304. Hold on a minute. I'm so- I'm not sure. Did you say something?

I told you, I'm Sophie Wynne. I'm here in Greenland with my fiance. Like I'm sorry if we strayed onto some I don't actually know what this place is. We were trying to see the Northern Light. I we didn't realize that we were on um what is this place? What are you doing here? Like I told you. Yeah we we were uh Everything looks the same here. I I guess we got lost and Well that that is my camera. I just

I wasn't filming you guys. I was trying to film the landscape, maybe even the aurora. I mean I d I I don't know if you noticed, but it's pretty picturesque out there. Where's my um fiance? the man you were with. Who are you? It's my job to ask the question. Who was the man you were with? My fiance? the man you were with. Do you know who you are He's my fiance. Yeah. You need to be open with us, Caitlyn. We're giving you a chance to save yourself.

You were led into this, right? The fake passport. He persuaded you. I know you don't I Listen to me, Caitlin. You are in big trouble. My name is Marianne Hawkins. I'm trying to help you. Do you understand what I'm saying? Do you know what happens to spice? Surprise? I wait look o okay look I like I don't think you guys should be talking to me without a lawyer present. I I want a lawyer. Okay, have you got a lawyer?

I want a lawyer. Before I utter another word, This is a very isolated place, Caitlin. Tell us about the man you were with. You've come to the end of it all. There's nowhere to hide here, no one to hide behind. I you can't. It's Okay, no, I I thought that I mean he's British. He works for the The British Government. MI six. The British authorities have been looking for him ever since he disappeared. He's a spy. And this is a US base. What kind of base?

A normal satellite communications and intelligence base. We have bases like this all over the world. Nothing unusual about it being here. Great. Then I'm free to go. You are not free to go. Ha ha You are in the company of a Russian agent. Okay, look, I know how it goes. The good guy, bad guy routine. I've seen it in too many bad movies, so can we just calm things down a bit? Like I haven't done anything wrong.

Caitlin's True Motive Revealed

Okay. maybe travelling on a false passport, I admit that was stupid, but look, I I don't have anything to hide. Okay, I I'm just trying to find the truth about Flight seven oh two. Is that a crime? Like my brother was on 702. Like I'd given up. Everything. School, my family to find out what happened. I've followed every lead, I've done everything humans love. Seven oh two crashed into the sea.

I know. Like I know, I know that's what they said, but there was a crash here. I near here I have proof. There are witnesses, satellite images. I mean, it happened at exactly the same time Flight seven oh two went missing. Were there were there any survivors? I'm sorry. You've been wasting your time. We don't know anything about what you're talking about. Can I see him? He's not here. He's been handed back to the British. This is a communications base, nothing more. Right.

And what's going to happen to me? You'll be repatriated and processed back to the US. Processed? Okay, time to go. Wait wait where are we going? Okay. Okay, you can go with the guards. No, but I can't please. I you need to go with the guards. This interview is officially over.

Podcast Promotion Interlude

Hey listeners, right now there are some amazing news stories coming out of Ear Hustle, our fellow Radiotopia show and the podcast about the daily realities of prison life. There's one episode called My Favorite Color. where we hear the conversation between a father and daughter who haven't seen each other in 26 years, partly because the daughter followed in her dad's footsteps and paid a heavy price for it.

In another, we meet a guy who, at the age of 13, got a tattoo job on his face that would influence the course of his life. And you know what? He's got no regrets. There's a story about what it's like to be betrayed by a dog, and another that explains how to hug someone when hugging itself is against the rules. These are the kinds of stories you hear on Ear Hustle. They're raw, they're deep, often very funny.

And what Ira Glass calls decidedly untragic. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Also check out their live show, which is swinging through the northeast US at the end of May. Details are at earhustlesq.com/slash tour.

Dr. Hall's Psychological Coercion

You've come here to talk about Flight 702. Like I'm sorry, who are you? I'm Dr.Hall From the ARL. Like the what? That doesn't matter really. I have a few questions for you. general ones, at first, anyway, uh some names, dates, who your contacts are here, uh who got you to the base. You didn't find your own way here. Where are the others? The others? People who were here before the sergeant and the woman Marianne Hawkins. I told them everything.

Yes, yes, I'm sure you did. Well, I'm here to assist them in their inquiry. Dr. Hawkins, in fact, used to be a student of mine. She has an extremely perceptive mind, raised a sharp focus, very good at her job. So where is she? She's behind the glass there. She's uh assisting me with the um with the uh procedure. Okay. Look, I I don't know what this is all about. I've been sitting in a cell for I don't know how long and and no one's telling me anything so

You want some answers, right? Yes. I understand how you're feeling. Did they give you anything to eat? Yeah, I I just Well no. I want my brother. But it isn't your brother No. I spoke to him. You spoke to? Yeah, he was on flight seven oh two. Yes, but I Look, Caitlin, if you're having trouble remembering Mm. We have something that can help. I don't... What do you You know, years ago, y when I was a student, I took part in some tests for Harvard Medical.

Did you know they used to pay students to take part in these kind of uh experiments in those days? Yeah, I I don't know if they still do that now. I was young, I was fit, I was poor, and taking part in a medical program seemed like uh well easy money, right? It was it was all about shock treatment, uh, the experiment. They wanted to see what the mind would do when the subject was shown various patterns of complex words that led to specific keywords. Like uh say, um I don't know, truth.

You were sitting alone in a room in the dark, and each time the word Came up. They put a sound through your head. A very loud, sharp sound. Oh, did I mention you'd be wearing headphones? And your hands would be uh secured to the table in front of you with cable ties so you couldn't remove the headphone. It's more like a shock treatment, I guess. And I can tell you, Caitlin, it was every bit as painful as shock treatment.

You know, it worked. And as the the pattern of words uh moved toward that that key word, well my heart rate would go up. I'd start to sweat. I'd I'd feel a growing Panic. But after they had gone through the pattern, you know, a few times, not many, actually, they didn't know. put a sound through your head every time that that word came up. Just seeing that word after a while caused your heart rate to increase, your sweat glands, your body to respond, and Soon.

You'd tell them whatever it was they wanted to know. I mean, all they'd have to do is show you the word. You see, your body learns to be obedient. Amen. To be obedient. Look, I don't know anything. Yes, I think, Caitlin, I think such a process might help you remember. Uh please? Hey, what are you doing? Doesn't work if you have the ability to take the headphones off. I'm not going to do this. Let me go. Just relax. Breathe. Try to calm yourself.

Uh When the procedure is over, the cable ties will be removed. Now the headphones. How's that? Is that comfortable? Thank you. Thank you gentlemen, you can go.

The 'Truth' Procedure Begins

Now I want you to be open and honest with me. Thank you. All the time in the world. And everything will be. Thank you. I don't have words. Yeah. Oh! Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, as I was saying, everything will be fine. And you can go back home. You can see your parents. All will be fine. Okay? Okay, let's begin. Dr. Hawkins, are you ready? Ready? We need to know Caitlin. Why you think Flight Seven O two Yeah. Did not come down in the Atlantic. We need to know everything about that.

all the things you haven't shared. all the things you've kept to yourself. Everything. Doesn't matter how crazy any of them are, even the things you've allowed yourself to forget. Amen. We want to help remind you. Es lo que todo esto es sobre, Catelyn. Yeah. Okay. We're going to ease into this with a few simple words. Okay. It will go on for a minute or two, so Close your eyes. Amen. And relax. If you would, Doctor Hawkins. Thank you. Desert. Thank you. Amen. America. Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha.

All right, Kayla. This is Mary Ann. I've got about 45 seconds to talk. I'm taking a huge risk to help you, okay? Why? Don't answer. Grind your teeth, keep your eyes shut, and listen to me. Maxmaker. I hope you didn't eat anything. Exactly. What was that, Caitlin? D did you say something? Rabbit. No, I was just... Why? the words soak over you. Jungle Amen. Okay, that's good. We're in very grave danger, all of us. You, me, Connor, the other survivors. Religion. He's here.

Yes. Yeah. Okay. I I wasn't saying anything. Do it. Terror. I feel sick. Oh dear dear dear dear. Dear dear. You'll feel better enough. This is when it starts to work Biology. Ha ha ha. They're wrong. Uh Survivors Survivors. Try. Survivors. Survivors. Trust me. Truth.

Escape and Hangar Discovery

Kaylin? Hey. C'mon, we need to be quick. Thank you. Where are we going? Thank you. I'm gonna show you something. Yeah. Thank you. What is this place? A hanger. The plane was here. They took me to see it when I first arrived. They reconstructed it from all the wreckage. Every bolt. Every What happened to it? NOOOOO They've taken it away. Because they don't need it anymore. It's all gone, like it never even existed.

These people, they're not jailers, they're cleaners. That's what they do. They clean it up. Hey, are you are you okay? I'm feeling a little dizzy. Did you eat the food? No, I I guess that's why. Here. It's from the vending machine We're safe here for a while. Thank you. You know, they're doing maintenance on the software, so the live feed is down. The live feed? To the south. They've stopped monitoring the captives through the night anyway.

The Cover-Up Unveiled

What's going on here? I know. It's a lot to take in, but we need to be fast. Amen. This is our only chance to stop them. Through here. This was the control center. It's what the engineers used when they were reconstructing the plane. They're in the process of decommissioning it. Only, they haven't yet. Oh my god. I thought they gave him back to the British. Nah. Why would they do that? But you said that It was a lie. Where are the passengers? They're here. I need to see him. Shortly.

Ha Why are they being held here? They say they are sick. It's sick. What do you mean? Contagious. That's why they're being kept in isolation. No one goes in there except with protective equipment. But it's been over six months, Caitlin. This is the live feed to the cells. Oh my god. Do these people look sick to you?

The plane was diverted here because they believed there was a terrorist on board, planning an attack on the US mainland. A biological attack. A manufactured virus was stolen from a lab in Iran. I ran. The journalist. Nadrula Alcott, she'd been investigating a virology lab there. She was travelling back with Senator Harris. They didn't make it. No one at the front of the plane made it. You see, the the crash, it it complicated things. It made it impossible to gather all the facts.

That's why they brought me here. I'm a forensic psychologist. They brought me here to interview the surviving passengers, to see if I could identify which one could be the terrorist.

Examining the Virus Theory

Wait a minute. They don't know who it is. No. Then how do they know there was a terrorist? Intelligence is gathered from many sources. They were expecting an attack, waiting for it. There was a huge operation, you know, different agencies were involved, multinational. And then there was intelligence that a terrorist was on board Flight seven oh two. The plane was already in the air by then. Fortunately, we had an agent on board. He was the agent? No. A woman. Chrissy. The white matchmaker?

That was a smokescreen to confuse the other side. Chrissy was a U.S. agent. She had been working undercover, tracking a suspect. Dr. Aziz, the doctor from Syria. Like I looked into Aziz, talked to his brother. He was a good man. Amen. Not was There he is. The one sitting on the edge of his bed. She didn't survive the crash. She was up in the cockpit with the pilot. You see, Caitlin, when I arrived here, it was a mess.

There was a huge amount of intelligence pointing to different scenarios, different possibilities, and twenty-two traumatized survivors of a plane crash, all of whom could have been infected with a deadly virus. My job was to find out if any of them could have been the terrorists who released the virus. So a virus was released on the plane.

That was the working assumption. Someone died during the flight, a woman called Wendy LePier. She and her husband were missionaries traveling back from the Congo. She had a fever and she died. The passengers were concerned that Something was spreading. It only took a few people to start coughing and there was panic. Chrissy went up to the cockpit and got a message out to say the attack had begun. Homeland Security thought the virus had been released. A decision had to be made fast.

They couldn't risk landing the plane on the U.S. mainland. So it was diverted here. I mean, you heard the recording I sent you. They had to dump fuel because the runway was too short. It crashed on landing. Why is this a secret? Why haven't they released the survivors? I mean Mm. Because it's such a massive fuck up. We can't tell the world what happened until we know what happened, and it's safe. The problem is so many of the passengers died when the plane crashed.

Nadula, the journalist, Senator Harris, Susan Clemont, the pilot, they're all dead, and others with them. None of the survivors got ill. They couldn't find the virus. Even the catering. Found no. So maybe there was nothing. No, there was something. Amen. Do you know why I'm here, Caitlin? Do you know why they chose me? Well, because I'm very good at my job. Amen. I interviewed the unibomber, got him to talk. Amen. I was an intern with alcohol and tobacco during the Waco season.

I discovered then that I could talk to people, and that I was able to get people to talk to me. I seemed to know these people, to understand them. But here. Well, so far I've failed. Caitlin, that's why I needed you.

Caitlin and Connor's Reunion

Oh my god. Wait, the clues you You knew I'd come. Even Connor. You arranged for him to call me. Oh no, Caitlin, I didn't arrange that, but I knew if I presented him with an opportunity, if I turned my back for a moment, he would take it. Amen. So this has all been what? Like the witch's breadcrumbs? Shit. Like what do you want from me? Yeah. Your help. My help? We need to approach this from a different perspective. As the plane was about to take off, someone hacked into the entertainment system.

We think a Russian hacking group were behind this, and maybe connected. Connected to what? If there was no biological weapon to help us. You have to help us to get Connor to talk. We know there was a terrorist on the flight. And Connor knows who it is. Dr. Hallen just wants to tear people's brains apart. That's what he was trying to do to you. But I think that's wrong. I didn't get the unibomber to talk by trying to rip his brain out. And why should I believe you?

Because it's your only chance to save your brother and get out of it. Yeah. Now I have been lied to. I've been arrested, tortured They've threatened to deport my parents and you're you're one of them. I'm not. You have to believe me. Why? Because I'm gonna take you to Connor. I was able to get moved into this observation unit. As far as anything can be in this place. There he is. Amen. All that good. Amen. Connor. It's you. It's really you He can't hear you. The glass. Yeah. Let me just Now try.

Amen. Can you hear me? Collar! Clark, it's me! It's me. I'm here. I came for you. What did you think I wouldn't come for you? I always knew you were alive. I I felt it in my heart always that you were alive. I was never gonna leave you alone. Like I'm so sorry. Oh, please. No more. We can't take the city. Please, I beg you, Lord. Told you. I told you everything! I know! Connor? Colour it's K. Get me! I'm here. Okay, I I have here. Yeah. I love you. I love you. Yeah. I'm here.

I need to go in there. That's impossible. They're all in quarantine. We can't go in without full biohazard suits. It's too risky. But I thought you said there wasn't a virus. Well we don't know for sure. Connor? Connor! Look at me! Hey yeah gets me. Kate. See you later. Connor, listen to me. You have to talk. I've told them everything. It wasn't me. I was investigating the hack here. I've taught them all. And I don't know anything about a virus.

How many times do I have to Connor, you need to just think No! No! Please don't don't don't! I'm here. No one's gonna do anything I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you. You just have to tell them. You have to tell them gone. There is no virus. They're keeping us all here. There is no virus and I don't know why. Listen to me, Connor. I I don't care what you've done, okay? I just tell them the truth. If you tell them the truth, we can all go home.

All of us we can save the others. They can all go home if you just let me. You have to tell them everything that you know. I I I I told them what Thomas wanted me to do was Make sure that the plane systems couldn't be coverable. No one believes me. They keep going on about this this virus in Iran and they c Me crazy.

I I keep telling them Like I mean why would I get on a plane if I thought someone was gonna bring it down? It wasn't about bringing the plane down. It was spyware. They were going to infiltrate! The whole network, every airport in the whole world, the entertainment system was the doorway, that's why I was there, to stop them, to stop I believe you are! It's okay. Like he's telling the truth. How do you know? I know my brother. He's telling the truth. Are you sure?

You see, I've taken a huge risk bringing you here, Caitlin. You need to help me. You need to get him to tell the truth, or like I said, no one is going home. They're gonna shut it down like it never happened.

Unexpected Help and Sacrifice

I don't know what else I can do. He's telling the truth, Marianne. Maybe, Caitlin, you're part of this too. Why not? Maybe you always were. Perhaps everything you've done, your search, was just an elaborate game. What are you talking about? It's me. Or it's Doctor Hallen again. And you've seen what he's done to your brother. Is that really what you want? He's telling the truth. I'm sorry. I tried. Guards, you can take her now. Who the hell are you? I've got a 1250. Marshall. Gary?

Is anyone there? They're all investigating an intrusion on the perimeter fence, a building on fire. It's just us here. Now okay. What? That's not possible. too dangerous. What are you doing? No, he might be infected! You don't really believe that. She told me it was a lie. Yeah, everything here is a lie. Open this door. NO! You'd do well, ma'am, to do as I tell you. Иди вверх. I won't know I would see you. Now ma'am, one in, one out. Get in the cell.

Your people stuck me in a lunatic asylum and took my daughter from me. Now get in. Never get away. You can't stay. This isn't crazy. Middle of a dope. No, we probably got about three minutes, five max, until they figure out who the hell I am.

Exposing the Truth Live

Connor. Wear the cells. We need to get everyone out of here. Then what do we do? We'll freeze to death or they'll round us all up. Caitlin, do you have a better suggestion? We don't escape. Uh we need to send this out. Reroute the surveillance cameras in all of the cells, livestream the feed to You can't do that, Caitlin. There's no way to do that. Switch her off. Wow outside action. Wait, Connor, can you hack into the surveillance system? I I can't. I can't. Who do we send it to?

To the whole fucking world. The live feeds of all of the cells. All of the passengers. All of them. I don't want them to ask me any more questions, please, Caitlin. You remember when we were on vacation in Louisiana with mom and dad? And we weren't supposed to go into the swimming hole and I fell in. And we thought there was an alligator in there, but it was just a tree trunk, and we were so afraid to scream for help because we knew mom and dad would be angry and we had to work together.

To get out of that. We can do this together too. Okay, it's the only chance we've got. We don't have much time. Oh, it's for the cells. Yeah. Yeah. Memorize them. Yeah. Alright. I need to get into the control center. Mm-hmm. Okay, there there's a control center in the hangar. Mm Marianne took me there. Okay. Let's go! Hello? My name is Caitlin Lay.

For the past six months I've been trying to discover the truth behind the disappearance of Flight seven oh two. And what you're seeing now is the truth of what's happening to the passengers of Flight seven oh two. There are so many who have tried to stop the truth from coming out. But now It's time to shine a light on the system and the people who tried to cover it up.

Um, Thomas got out without being charged. I mean he was dismissed from MI6, but he's relieved to be out of the spy business. They just want to put all this behind them. And your parents? Uh I think they're beginning to accept Connor for who he is.

Well, they will. In the end, hopefully. Maybe in about uh I don't know, seven years or so? If you ever want a job as an investigator for a lawyer, just give me a call. Yeah. Maybe. New York. You. Ma dad needs you there. Besides, I need to focus on my studies. Yeah, thanks for reminding me. So you're working hard. No, Mom, and don't worry, I won't mess it up again, okay? Jesus.
