¶ Marianne's Interrogation and Flight 702
Orientation interview with S. C. H. Marianne Hawkings. How was your journey, Marianne? Yeah, fine. Where am I? Well let's not let's not jump the gun. This is a secure facility. Can I have the documentation they gave you when you left? Thank you. You haven't opened this. No. Why am I carrying papers around? It's just procedure. Uh we can't rely on electronic data here. It's too much scope for you know how it is. God. Yeah, just put your right forefinger there. And your left hand? Thank you.
Thank you. Well they told you, right? We need a blood sample. Why? Procedure. You know how it goes, Marianne. You sign the consent forms. This will provide a baseline. What do you mean a baseline? Don't worry, we all have to do this. Right. Done. Uh two seconds, sir. Here we go. Yes, sir. Good. Alright, let's begin. What is this? It's a plane. Yeah. No it's a plane in pieces. Every bolt, every screw. Every electrical connection, every sandwich, everything has been disassembled.
Yeah we've even got the the waste matter. Uh this is a four three uh came into commission So, you know, comparatively new. What's that? That's the pilot's manifest. Right. Co pilot. What Zahid and the Gem. Point of origin. New York. London. New York London. Flight 702. 254 passengers. Wait. 702? Flight 702 went down in the Atlantic. Everyone was lost. Yes, ma'am. Well... Tell me the truth! From what we understand, uh, there's been Wreckage that has A few years ago.
We appreciate everyone's patience as we diligently sort through the wreckage. First priority is bringing closure to the families of Flight 702, which is why it's so important to ignore scurrilous rumors that only seek to slow down. What about the family? Just don't I just don't think we're ever going to get answers. I just want to know what happened to my friend. I don't care about the money or anything else. I d I just want to put her to rest. I just want to know what happened to my fiance.
Hey listeners, right now there are some amazing news stories coming out of Earhustle, our fellow Radiotopia show and the podcast about the daily realities of prison life. There's one episode called My Favorite Color, where we hear the conversation between a father and daughter who haven't seen each other in 26 years, partly because the daughter followed in her dad's footsteps and paid a heavy price for it.
In another, we meet a guy who, at the age of 13, got a tattoo job on his face that would influence the course of his life. And you know what? He's got no regrets. There's a story about what it's like to be betrayed by a dog, and another that explains how to hug someone when hugging itself is against the rules. These are the kinds of stories you hear on Ear Hustle. They're raw, they're deep, often very funny.
And what Ira Glass calls decidedly untragic. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Also check out their live show, which is swinging through the Northeast US at the end of May. Details are at earhust.com slash tour.
¶ Rory's Urgent Tip-Offs
Petra, hi. I know I said I'd get back to you about the settlement but It's not about that. Is this line secure? Your phone, Rory, is it secure? Could anyone have cloned it? Be monitoring it? But like who? I don't know. Homeland Security real life version of Carrie fucking Matheson, maybe. Whoever's interested in whatever you're up to. Still up to, I should say. I don't know what you're talking about. No, listen, listen. Regarding seven oh two.
I've come across some info that might be of interest to you. Hang on, uh why haven't a back off Rory or we'll destroy your career? Call it my contingency plan. If you are on to something and it gets out, you'd better remember who helped you out on this. Good, now run some water or put some music on to mask what I'm saying, just in case you're being monitored. Does that actually work? Just do it. Message received Wednesday, December 2nd, 927 p.m.
Hi, Caitlyn. It's um it's Rory. Listen, I know we left things kind of up in the air but I There's something you need to know. Since we parted company I've been thinking about Marianne and the recording she sent you and digging around a bit on my own and Greenland. I think the plane's in Greenland. Rory? Hi. How have you been? They've been saying the wreckage is off the coast of Greenland for weeks. What makes us different?
Look, um, one of my contacts um someone oh well never mind. It's it's not important. They heard about a lawsuit over in Greenland that's being handled by a colleague of ours. The day 702 went missing, someone was hit by a piece of flying debris. This person said they saw an airplane flying low, too low. A passenger plane. Yes. And then a piece of metal shattered their windshield. They think it crashed, Caitlin. They heard an explosion, what they think was an explosion, a loud boom.
Okay, I need a location. Greenland's a big country. That's all they had, I'm afraid. Okay, thanks. Come we No. Yeah, okay, I get that. You don't trust me, I get it, but I'm reaching out an olive brush. You should call Jim Denison. I got him out. You got him out? Maybe if you won't take my help, you'll take his. I'm sending you his number now. Is there anything else you need? Yeah. Thanks Rory. The number you have.
Everything's starting to click together and I need. Connor needs your help. I have to get to Greenland, but Holm Security is still looking for me. Hell everyone. I'm going. I want you to come with me, but with your help or not. I'm finding a way.
¶ Jim Joins the Greenland Mission
Agent Tennyson. I'm not agent anymore. A gym is fine. Uh how are you? Not great, obviously, uh but better now that I'm not in a forced psychiatric hold. Right. Did did you want do you want to sit down? I feel like uh I should apologize, Kaylin. Why? Why? Well, um, for the last time we saw each other, I I was um I was in a very dark place and I I worried that I I scared you. You didn't scare me. Yeah, but you were right, Jim. I think you were right about all of that. I've been given a tip.
A good tip. From a reliable source, I Roy? There's a there's a woman. Her name is Marianne. I think she's in Greenland right now, investigating what happened at the flight and What all the records they found? It's definitely seven oh two. She's not investigating the wreckage. She's interviewing. She talked to my brother. What? She talked to Connor, yeah. He's alive. I'm positive. أملي؟ I don't know. I'm sorry, but I'm going to find out. I'm going to Greenland.
What? Marianne, she's on our side. She can help me. And I was hoping maybe you could help me too. I need papers. A new passport, a ticket, and I I was hoping that maybe I I mean I know you used to be a Fed, but it's not like it's the first time an FBI agent will be breaking the law and Is is is Roy going with you? I mean he had mentioned that you two had Uh he had his uses, but I don't know if I can trust him. I don't need worry. Okay, I just I need to get to Greenland.
Okay, I'll do it. I'll I'll I'll get whatever you need. On one condition. I'm coming with you. Look, I I really appreciate the offer, but you just got out of three months in a psychiatric hospital. Are you sure you're up for this? Are you kidding me? Before I was at the bureau, I was in the army. Special forces. You don't lose that, Caitlin. I still got it. And I can still do it.
¶ Arrival in Greenland and Divided Paths
With life three four zero. from New York, JMU. Your baggage carries me. I'm hoping in a few hours from now, but I'm not sure. I'm still waiting for someone. This is not simple requesting them. I know. But I promise I'll return the favour. That's not good to me if you get caught up. So I won't get caught. Thomas. Just leave it waiting for us. And we'll go when it's dark. That's not my concern.
I'll take you. I can't get you inside. If I can get you close, show you the terrain. Show you what I know. What I saw. Fine. Oh gotta go. I'll text your woman nearby. Thomas. Ha ha ha. Oh my god. Thomas How how did you- Where did you how? I got on a plane as soon as I could, okay? I've been here for about four hours. Just waiting outside for flights arriving from New York. That's um Where the fuck have you been? Lying low. Like we both were supposed to be doing Caitlin. I wish No.
Oh, it's okay. He's with me. Jim Dennison, Thomas Ryder. Hi. How are you? Jennison, the FBI agent, Kate. You brought a fed with you. Former Fed, actually. They don't tend to take you back once you've been forced into a mental hospital. I wouldn't have gotten here without him. He got us passports, the flights. He's just as invested in this as we are. He's just as much at stake. Fine. What's your plan to get through immigration?
Uh we've got passports, just two Americans taking advantage of an airline deal. Traveling together No, we were gonna go separately. If something goes wrong, hopefully one of us will still get through. It's Greenland, not Fort Knox. How suspicious are they going to be? Denison. You go ahead first, Kate. Субтитры сделал DimaTorzok Bye. If they start asking questions, I know how to answer them. Thomas, I'm not new at this, okay? I'm not letting you do any of this alone. We were eloping.
In the middle of winter. We've been doing long distance for a year now, and we couldn't wait another second. And this one is absolutely nuts for the northern lice. I couldn't resist marrying her under them. How long are you planning on staying? Uh just a week or so and then off to Europe for our honeymoon. Gotta take advantage of those airline deals, right, love? Uh-huh. Alright. Going through. See I told you, not Fort Knox. That's all's better to be prepared. Whatever you say, love.
Everything go okay? All good. Alright, I looked it up and Rory's contact is only thirty minutes from here, so... Okay, great. Let's grab a cab. Well I've got a contact as well. A little further out, I've already booked a car rental. I can drop you in the way. What kind of contact? Someone who can get us close. Close to what? Okay, Jim, can you see the lawyer on your own? I'll go with Thomas and then we'll meet up tonight at the hotel and figure out next step.
Well, uh don't you think your contact could wait half an hour? I mean I think it's best we all stick together. Mm, it's Greenland in December. We're operating with very limited daylight hours here. Okay, then Caitlin, you should come with me. Okay. I don't know what you're trying to get close to, but I have a feeling it's a lot less safe than a lawyer's. Jim I I brought you here. It's my job to protect you. No, I brought you here. You just did the paperwork, okay? Wasting time.
I can't let you get hurt, Caitlin. Do I have adopted me stamped on my forehead or something? Um what? Never mind, Jim. I I'm going with Thomas. He's a spy for God's sake. We'll be fine. Go talk to the lawyer. But I I will I just I Thomas I'll take care Oh my god, hurry up or I'm leaving you both behind. Thank you.
¶ Thomas's Devastating Confession
Okay. Sorry. Bye now. It's only another twenty minutes or so. Are you sure this guy's gonna be able to do that? Can we trust him? He's an old contact. It's been a few years since I've seen him, but we can trust him. Oh uh before I forget Yeah. What's this for? Thomas, I'm already recording. I'm always recording. Why? We're about to head into the Greenland wilderness. There won't be any cell service. It would be absolutely freezing, probably very windy, and overall incredibly harsh. Thank you.
Sounds like fun. See that little camera is made to withstand harsh conditions. Your iPhone isn't. Okay, okay, I get it. I don't need the whole lecture. What was the plan, Caitlin? Show up in Greenland and just ask to seek honor. plan was to talk to Rory's contact, gather what info we can and then You know, You've been gone the past few months and I've been doing just fine without you. I told you all along that Connor was still alive and I was right. Would it kill you to give me some credit?
I just want us to keep our heads. Think before we act. Look. Okay. I know we still have to get in and a lot of things could go wrong, but it's okay to be hopeful, Thomas. What if he's not there? What? We don't know what could have happened to him. No. No, you can't you can't think like that, okay? Marianne told me he was okay, that he was alive. But how do you know that we can trust her?
I don't. But it doesn't matter. If I only talked to people who I trusted completely, then I wouldn't be We don't have a choice, okay? This is the closest we've gotten and we have to keep going. I know I know What is it, Thomas? What are you telling me? Thank you. If we don't do this right, if we don't do this perfectly, and something happens to Connor? I can't fail him again. You're not going to fail him. You haven't failed him. You never stopped looking just like me.
I'm the reason he was on that plane. Und... I think I might be the reason it came down. What do you mean? He was spying on the allegiance for me. infiltrating them when I couldn't. And he found out they were planning something, something on flight 702. So he got a ticket, I got him a ticket. MI6 had found out that I was dating one of the people I was supposed to be investigating. And this was our way to smooth things over.
Stop whatever the Allegians wanted to do with 702. Apprehend someone in the organization. Prove to MI6 that me and Connor were on the right side of things. But Thomas. Way Connor was supposed to check in every hour. And when he missed his second drop, I panicked. So I told MI6, I told them, about our completely unsanctioned, very below board mission, and they took his silence as a sign that something had gone wrong. That there really was a terrorist on board. What are you saying?
I've been working this whole time trying to figure out what exactly happened to 702 because I think I think they shot it down. I think they shut it down because I told them something was happening. I got nervous and 200 people died. That's what happens when you don't stop and think, Caitlin. People die. Are you fucking kidding me? Thomas? All this time, you've been thinking this the whole time and you're telling me now?
I didn't want to believe that I could have had something to do with it. I didn't want to think that my own government would sacrifice 200 people to take down one terrorist. But they could have. And you knew. I've spent all this time chasing down every possible lead, and you're telling me it might have been your own fucking agency? I don't know that for certain. I didn't want to give you a half-baked piece of information. But that's all I've had. This entire time. Just crumbs and
Yeah. If there really wasn't a legion on board, who knows what they could have done? And that would have been a pretty useful crumb too. You know, I am really sick of every man I know treating me like a child. Oh don't give me that, Kate. I don't try to parent you. Yeah, I don't see how you could be able to do that. But you are twenty one. So was Connor. And you had him out there infiltrating terrorists. And look how that turned out.
Don't let your fear dictate what you tell me, Thomas. It isn't fair. After everything we've been through, you still don't trust me. That's not true. Really? Because I don't keep those kinds of secrets from you, Thomas. My job is keeping secrets, Kate. I was engaged to Connor and there was plenty I didn't tell him. I guess you've disappointed both the lay twins then. Thank you. Congrats. Thank you. What are you doing? Go ahead. Back up over here, behind my truck. He's got something to show.
You got plenty of warm clothes. Good. We've gone the snowmobiles from here. Come
¶ The Lawyer's Confidential Case
And who did you say sent you? Uh Rory Murray. Rory Murray. Now there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Yeah, he said you both worked on a case a few years back. Something something to do with um Yeah. What is he now? Nice to know he remembered my name, I suppose, even if he seemed to lose my phone number rather quickly. If Rory wants to go after Greenland Air or whatever else. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I it's it's not about a Greenlandic airline. It's about Atlantic Airlines Flight 702.
Of course it is. That's just the sort of case you'd go for. So you and Rory, you're suing Atlantic Airlines, I take it. No, uh I'm not actually uh I'm not a lawyer. Then who are you? I used to work for the government the American government. And what exactly do you think I can do for you? Well um Rory heard that you were working an injury case. I work on a lot of injury cases. Of someone who got hit by flying debris from a plane crash.
If that were a case I was working on, I'd imagine it would be quite confidential. People don't get hit by falling debris very often. Especially from flights that disappeared without a trace. Flight seven hundred two was found into Atlantic. Which is why it's odd that you have a client who was hit by flying debris while driving a car on land. Miles away from the Atlantic. Now I'm not an aviation expert, but two plus two isn't adding up to four for me here.
I think you'll find that new part of this equation bears out the way you think it will. So you are involved with this case? I don't know how Rory gets this information, I really don't. Well, he's very determined. You must be as well, to come all this way. My daughter was on seven oh two. I'm very sorry for your loss. So you think the plane crashed?
It's not my job to determine what happened to Flight seven hundred oh two. The only thing I care about is getting someone to pay for my clients' medical bills and car repair. I'm surprised Atlantic Airlines hasn't already settled. I'd imagine they'd want a case like yours to go away as quickly and quietly as possible. You assume I'm suing the airline. A lot of people are liable for what happened to 702. What do you mean? You've come all the way to Greenland. Why?
To find definitively what happened to seven oh two? I've been doing this for many months and I can't find my way through the tangle of information. I can't help you. And you can't go up against this alone.
¶ Crash Site Witness and Military Response
How much further? You alright? Yeah, fine. When'd you learn to drive one of these things? I'm a spy, remember? You sit at a computer, Thomas. My parents and I used to go to the Alps for the holidays. Do jump. Thank you. Oh, I can barely feel my face. Terima kasih. Where are we? Four miles from Tula Airbase. And this is where you saw it. Clear as day. A passenger airplane, fire and smoke coming from its tail, falling out of the sky. You sure it was a passenger plane?
Positive. You know how many military planes I see coming across this land? My whole life, your government's been treating our land like it's theirs. Yeah, they have a habit of doing that. Yeah. You live near here? About two miles south. Amen. Whose land are we on now? Greenlands? This is public land? All of Greenland is for everyone. No one owns private property here. We share. Except Tula. EXCEPT TYLÄ! That day, I followed the plane as far as I could on my snowmobile.
What were you doing out here? At least until all the animals got scared away by the noise. Did you see where the plane landed? It didn't land. It's crushed. No. No, no, it didn't. At least some of the passengers survived. Maybe they did. But there was an explosion. I could hear it, even miles behind. But did you hear anything else? Before you saw the plane, was there a gunfire another plane? Not that I remember. Why? Uh can you take us to the crash site? No. This is as far as I can go.
Then tell us where it is. We'll go on our own. I can't tell you that with any certainty. I thought you said you followed it. As far as I could. The explosion had barely stopped when the helicopter noises started. The military. Like I said, the airbase is very close. They responded quickly. If there were any survivors of the initial crash The military would have gotten them out quickly. Look, he's alive, Thomas. I heard him. Alright.
Well if you can't take us to the crash site then we'll go to the airbase. Go to there. Point us in the right direction. We'll pay you for the snowmobile. So you both have a death wish. Death wish ch is a bit much. You have to stop and think about this before you go storming in They're both crazy. If the military doesn't get you, you will die of exposure.
¶ Approaching the Airbase and Ambush
Yeah, I know they're out there now. Uh they should be back soon, I think. I'm sorry then Melina. I guess you still have been moved. It sure seems like it. But it wasn't unhelpful. Uh the if there are witnesses to the plane crashing here then If the government has been trying to keep those witnesses. Exactly. The more cracks in the armor, the better. So it's an accident. Well, I just got to the hotel, so for me, a very hot shower before Thomas and Caitlin get back.
Then tomorrow we'll try to get on to the airbase, I think. Are you sure that's smart? Just to go in there all guns blazing. Who am I kidding, Caitlin? Of course that's the plan. Jimmy and I. The military. They're here. I see you. I don't I don't think so. You need to get out of there. I need to warn Caitlin and Thomas. Let's leave the snowmobile here. Go the rest of the way off foot. Oh fuck, it's cold. Who cares? But Connor is down there. We're gonna see him. We're actually gonna see him. Yeah.
Have a little hope, Thomas. Nothing else matters if we find him. Right. This place is enormous. Okay. We just need to figure out a way in and then we'll find Marianne. Like if she's talked to Connor, she'll know exactly where on the base he's being kept. Okay, you really want to take a moment to make the perfect plan when Connor is feet away from us? Fuck thinking it through. There you go. Shit! Run! Season 2, Episode 7. If you drink hell, you can't do it. The story editor is Matt.
