Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout podcast for the week of June twelfth, twenty twenty three. Hi am Katherine Heleco, and I'm here with Nicole Heretics. Hello, and Terry Morrow. Hello. Every week we chat about what parents are talking, complaining, and obsessing about right now. This week we're complaining about silly fights and obsessing about a certain ted lasso scene. And we also are taking a couple of breaks for an entertainment discussion and a recommendation roundup. Today

we're talking about summer plans and goals. This was two topics that Nicole suggested and I just combined them into one. So and we did talk a little bit about goals last week when we talked about recommitting to resolutions. But you know, I think a lot of times people have sort of a summer bucket list or a summer goals or like this summer I really want, you know, some vague dreams and plants. So I don't know, doesn't do any of us have any of those plans goals something? Nah, Okay, we

don't do summer anymore. Really. The kids are working, I'm working. My husband has the summer off because he works for a college but to like plan to go on a vacation or something, it would involve changing the kids work schedules, and I don't want to do that. They're you know, hanging on by their part time fingernails. So it's just we've we go on vacation for Christmas week and the rest of the year, we just kind of keep on keeping on. So when they were in school, we would have

had goals for the summer. We would have had plans of things to do. Now we're just a bunch of adults. Just what I did resolve to just recently, to drink more water. So I like filling up water bottles and trying to empty them over the course of the day, which mostly means that I am in the bathroom all the time. But other than that, we'll see how long that lasts. But hydration, I guess that's my plan and my goal for the summer. Hydration. I plan to hydrate. Keep

working. I would like the work too, to keep up and possibly increase a little bit since we're down a paycheck for the next couple of months. But if not, it's fine, I'm fine, everything's fine. I'd also like to get my closet switched over from summer to winter, which I started doing last night but while watching the show we're going to talk about tomorrow, but did not finish. There is still a large pile of sweatshirts on our love seat in our living room, and my goal is for them not to

be there the entire summer. It's a good goal. It could absolutely. It's very comfortable there the sweatshirts are you know, they're really kind of getting comfy. Yeah, we don't need to go into that trunk. We're fine here. Nobody ever sits on the love seat. It'll be fine. What about you, guys, do you have exciting plans? Let me live vicariously

through you. I talked about this with the resolutions, but I am starting a new job, so that's kind of my plan, you know, because at the moment, I don't really know what my hours are going to be and what my schedule is going to be, so I feel like I can't really make many plans. As long as you still have time to record podcasts, Catherine, I have your priorities straight, girl, Yes, don't worry,

they're they're in order. But yeah, you know, like I know, you know, of course, well, one of our goals will certainly have to be to get our kid ready for college drop off at the or the end of summer. So my daughter came home and I was like,

whatever happened to the extra long sheets? You know we must have we must have a set of those from you, And she said, well, they are completely basically, I don't know where the top sheet is anymore, and the fitted sheet is all like pilly and and rough, like it's not comfortable at all. So so yeah, we're gonna have to start over with the

with the sheets. Apparently, so but apparent I received and I know at least one other person I know whose kids going to a different school, got a flyer in the mail that was like from the school, but it's for you know, sort of a dorm shopping pack. Oh that's like the way in elementary school you'd get by all your school supplies, was like buy all your beddings. Handy. So will it come all like with her name on

it like the school? Oh that's handy. Yeah. And my other goal is for my son to get a summer job, which hasn't happened yet, and I'm starting to worry that it's too late. I know he's he's applying in a bunch of places, so we're just waiting for that to fall into place. Well, good luck. Yes, you always hear about how everybody's dying for employees, but yeah, I think that was a while ago.

I don't know if that's still a thing. Well, I mean, like a friend of his works at a local store, a hardware store, and so during the school year, my kid applied there and they never answered him, and then he went in and tried to meet with the person and resubmitted the application. Still nothing, And now the kid who does work there is like they're always complaining about how they don't have any aple and my son's like, do they want me to apply a third time? Like why they have

certain They always say, we'll keep your information on file files. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, how about you, Nicole, you're juggling, You're always juggling multiple jobs. Yeah, although I've trimmed them back quite a bit. Okay, so I'm not as busy this summer, which is kind of nice. And I've got some house projects to take care of, um and just kind of like catching up on life stuff because it was like NonStop action from

August of last year till March of this year, so or May. Actually I was pretty busy at May as well, So I'm just kind of like looking for My goal is to have some downtime and to just kind of recalibrate and reevaluate. Yeah, that'd be nice, like I yeah, I mean, I enjoyed the the diversity of the jobs that I had, but it was almost too much like yeah, you know, like I was the juggling and the just you know, keeping track of everything ye all the time,

like you know, multiple times a day. So um, I like that. Yeah, consistency is key for me. So yeah, so my goal is to be to have a consistent, low key summer and then maybe try and streamline my schedule for the fall. And yeah, so that's kind of where I'm at. Um, and have a trip back to Canada. I want to go back up and see my daughter Nice at some point in the summer. And I don't know. A friend suggested a girl's trip to Portugal, so oh my goodness, I don't know, you know, that might

happen. I don't like that, although this rosary I do. They're going to Ecuador. Oh and uh, first problem, I not that I would want to go to Ecuador. Now, there would have been times in my life I totally would have wanted to go with but they said, well,

it's the altitude is going to be high. So if you have any problem with blood pressure or heart or any of that, SIT's that that leads me out of you have any trouble walking, you know, a whole lot, so many many reasons why I wouldn't be able to go, but also the political situation, they're not so good. Are you sure you want to go there? Right? So? Right, um, yeah, I am not

daring. There would have been a time in my life as we discussed my ill advised Europe trip where I would have been, yeah, sure, sign up, I'll go. But Terry, I just had a friend throw out that she's going to Puerto Rico for a Hamilton like fundraising performance where it's going to have a lot of the original cast and it's raising money. And she unexpectedly had an additional ticket and threw it out to our group, and I

was like, oh man, I'm so tempted. But as I was saying, I don't know what my schedule is going to be, yeah, and you know, like we're having this graduation party for a lot of people, right, like dropping kind of a lot of money yet so I don't feel like it's responsible for me to do this. But wow, did that sound that would be tempting because I haven't done a vacation, vacation and you know where it's not just we're going to see family or whatever. I haven't done

anything like that in a long time. That girls trip, you guys went to Grease, right, Yeah, that wasn't twenty eighteen. Wow, so it's been a while. Yeah. Yeah, I don't have friends really, so those invitations don't come up. My we you know, we take a weekend and that's the special Olympics. That's our girls weekend. My friend and I and we sit in a parking garage in the shade for but you who, well, well, who was the friend that you would talk to like

every week or something? Yeah, that's that's my friend. Yes, we don't, we don't. Okay, we don't do exotic vacations. But okay, we do do go to Trent and New Jersey for sporting events. That sounds exotic in the world. Actually youing, it's actually youing the beautiful College of New Jersey. But yeah, yeah, I don't know. We used to go on vacations. I mean, we still have this timeshare, and we used to go on vacations and my friend and her husband would come with

and that would be real fun. But nobody's proposing adventure vacations to me of any sort so or foreign vacations, and I wouldn't go if they did. So I am settling into the fuddy duddy stage of my life where I just want to sit on my front porch and rock and yell at kids to get off my lawn and to call up the neighborhood Watch and say, Nicole has homeless people outside your house again, right, do something about that? Oh I don't know. Well, I will live, you know, you guys

will. We'll talk about your summer things as they go by, and I'll go, wow, that sounds nice, that sounds cool. I'm already enjoying the don't have to get up in time to get my kid to school. Oh yeah, yes, that's been great. Yeah, the high point of my summer so far. Yes, that is one of the best things about your kids graduating. But of course you never didn't have to take him during

the summer when he wasn't. Yes, true, but but this is the This is ther first part of you are enjoying it with the knowledge that you will not have to start doing it again. That's right, extra little dollarp of joy. There's no expiration doing on it right now? He said, will you have to drive him to college? Well, just the first day? I mean okay, Well, I mean if he wants to come home, you have to go pick him up. Oh, we'll see. He

may he may have a vehicle. I don't know. Well, okay, yes, make sure he makes friends with people who will be driving in your direction. Yes, it's a directory of that. Well he has he has three friends that are going to not his school, but the one in the same town. So nice. Yeah. Oh there's a different school in the same town. Wow. Oh yeah, okay, well that'll be nice. Yeah yeah, So that's definitely impossibility convenient. When does he When does he

move into college? Um, the last weekend in August? Okay, oh go fast, yeah, I will. Well, we will have a lot to talk about then, that's right, But we have less to talk about

now. So that's it for today's round one. Tune in tomorrow for entertainment themed Round two and later in the week to find out what we're complaining about, obsessing about, and recommending right now we've We're always interested in what you have to say, so drop us a comment on our website or Facebook page or Twitter, where we'll find us a round about chat m hm
