Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout Podcast. I'm Terry Morrow and I'm Catherine Jileco. As parents and parenting writers, we can't help but see everything through a parenting lens. But as our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested in getting caught up on movies and streaming than I'm going over the same parenting
topics over and over. So, since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere, we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it, if only what not to do. Watch and listen along, and let's all make like we're
doing something important for our families. Each Wednesday we bring you a watch or rewatch of an older entertainment property, And for this week of July twenty second, we are continuing We've lost season one, and this week we're talking about episode three, Tabula Rasa, which is the Kate episode, the Kate flashback episode where we find out why indeed, her picture is on the mugshot that Jack and Herley find amongst the dying guys belongings from last week's flashbacks, we
knew that she had been the person handcuffed to the marshall. But we didn't really know what her thing was. But do we still flashbacks? We still don't know exactly what she did. Don't we know how she became a captive? And I'm trying to remember when we find out what she did. I don't. I kind of have a vague memory of what it was, but I don't remember how soon we find out, because as Jack said, it's a new start, starting over all that other stuff. We're dead, we
die, This is a new thing. Tabula rasa exactly don't care well. And we have seen her twice save the life of someone, or at least try to protect someone when it was not in her interest to do so, so she's not so I think we can assume she's not a stone cold killer, but a victim of some circumstance or other that caused her to we trust. Whereas Sawyer, on the other hand, is being painted as just the baddest bad guy and then in the end he doesn't even know how to kill
somebody. Come on, man, he tries, he would have been able to kill that dude. Come on, you gotta shoot him in the head, my friend, Oh dear, well, we celebrate the return of Vincent finally, and man Locke doing a parent a solid Wow, what a champ. He could have been the hero and he lets the dad have the moment. Let's all parents, let's just stand and clap for that moment. That's what we're looking for. That's what we're looking for. Please please in the
wider world. Although I'm not sure what we were supposed to make of Lock's face at the very end, yes, well, one thing you can make of it is that next week it's his life. Okay, So I don't remember we had a close up of Kate at the end of the last one, but nod. Yeah, but yeah, there's more there than currently meeting
me, I for sure. But still that was that was lovely, Yes, and he was making the whistle he was making was a dog whistle apparently, would you know just off hand on me ey, I certainly would not. I was just thinking, oh, man, he did all that work on his little whistle and it's not making any noise or is my sound not right? And then I realized, here comes Vincent. Yes, that's looking dog by the way, excellent dog casting. Yeah, just not look like
he's been running around the jungle for exactly. I was just gonna say, it's been a couple of days and there's apparently a dog groomer on the where he's been swimming in the ocean and then carefully drying himself off somewhere where there's no stand getting a nice blow out and fluff. Yeah. And also did he have a leash on him? I guess he must, because I don't think lock would have just had a leash. Yeah, I don't know.
There was quite a nice looking leash, right, he was like, oh, I found him, and I tied him up to this tree so you can go get stopped pet coo to get a leash, and then gave him a good brush and tied him up to the tree. Gave him a snack because like, what is that dog eating? Who knows? Yeah, yeah, that's the thing. He doesn't like have blood on his jowl from the small animals he killed to eat. It's like, all together, a awfully looks way better than most of the humans. So I guess the island is
magical when it comes to pets or something. Does Vincent get to stay around for the duration or is that a spoiler? Let's let's say I won't spoil it because I really don't know. We won't spoil it. I remember Vincent from the beginning, and actually, actually now spoiler, I do remember a little bit. So, but I think we can all know that this being an American television series, no way didn't kill the dog, right, I'm pretre sure it's true. Dogs are You can't kill a dog. You can
kill a you can kill a US Marshall. You can you know, kill a pie and drag a pilot and leave his bloody body in a tree, But the dog's gonna look well fed and freshly roomed. Have the series? They're not dumb. Yeah, the people are going to be fighting over the rotting airplane food, but the dog is going to be just fine. There's a full creda Albo was in the uh the baggage commardment right, oh man?
What else? We have a little more of Gin and Son, you know, yeah, like mixed signals of how bad is he or what? You know? Yeah, they're just every time you see them, it's like the producers are saying, this is a bookmark. We will get back to this in a little while. Just just you know, they're holding you don't have time for everybody at all times. There's a lot of characters. Yeah, we'll just give you a little look every now and then we'll get to
it. We'll get to it. They'll be flashbacks. So yes, yeah, I mean a network show that has like twenty two episodes a year or whatever, they can give you know, twenty people. Yeah, it's so wild how long a season of TV used to be. I guess it still is on the networks, but we're so used to streaming stuff that's like six or eight episodes and this just is going to go on four, right, But anyway, Yeah, so jenn and Son, that will be don't worry
about that right now. No, I know she should probably not be naked in the middle of the jungle when people are running around. But still, yeah, okay, told you to wash up and then just put your dirty cardigan back on, so I don't know so much that helps. Yeah, maybe you should have washed that too. They have a little lights somewhere right, ohs man, and I am so appreciating Curly bringing the comic relief pretty much just every time it's needed. Dude, dude, dude, I think
you know his name. It is Jack, But that's dude. Is you know, it conveys a little something different. That's right, He's delightful and uh, sayid is just really being painted as the hero hero point hero bright. It's after Jack and the man looks good in an undershirt. Let's just say, yeah, we don't know much about him, but he's out there leading. Hair is looking good. Yeah, those those beachy waves he's gott he's got called the beachy curls. People pay a lot of money for that.
Yeah. Next to the dog grooming place there's hair salon. Get a little styling. If I think, if, if, if Sun looks around long enough, she can find a dry cleaner for that. Oh boy, yep. So this was the Kate story. And uh, every week, as you can guess, we're going to get somebody else. And this thus filling in the characters without having to do it quite so much. On the island, they can all just be castaways, right. But boy, scranging
around, they keep they keep scrangching around in luggage more and more. Pretty soon they're gonna run out of stuff to scrounge. But yeah, let's go in the area there with all the dead bodies and look around for stuff. I'm sure it won't be disgusting. And how long have they been there in the heat? Right? At least a few days? Right, Yeah, it's going to be at the very least insects of some sort. Yeah, well, I'm glad we didn't have to see it. Yes, thank you,
they kept it dark, thank you. We'll just look at the suitcases. Just makes you think when you get on a plane, what do I have in my carry on and in my luggage that would be useful in an emergency to the people who survive, because honestly, probably you're better off if you get killed. Yeah, what what would they find in my suitcases? Is they were picking through? Should I pack carefully? Should I put it in anything? Embarrassing? You never think about that? Should I bring some
industrial strength antibiotics? Just not enough people bring antibiotics with them on a trip. What is the matter with these people? Are none of them like post surgical or anything? Come on, Yeah, no kid has an ear infection? Well, I suppose a child's ear infection. And about a child's dose of amoxicillin isn't going to do much for the guy with the giant a hole and in the side of his body, he was pretty he kind of he kept rallying that dude, I don't know. Yeah, he's like the Man
of Iron. He kept coming back, coming back. He is dying, but he has enough strength to try to strangle Kate. Yep, she's very small, her neck is fairly narrow. But still who knew he had that still in him? Yeah? Impressive. Yes, made a tough stuff. Yeah, they the whole Like the way he he didn't seem to be following the rule book of the marshals let's say no, no, by the way,
seem to be enjoying his work a little bit. Yeah, by the way he acted in the in the pickup trucks in the Australian outback or wherever, And like what happened? I mean she she grabs the steering wheel, she rolls the farmer's pickup truck down a hill and drags him up. But where what happened to the to the marshal at that point? Yeah, like, I guess he's driving. Well he came back and caught her, I think, Yeah, so yeah, he must have liked been what the heck
and then turned a right to come back. Takes a moment. She hadn't pulled the guy out of the truck. She could have been going right. The guy and his farm comes off, I know, and I had sort of missed or I had forgotten that. You know, he had a prosthetic arment. So then when she like yanked it off of him during the during the rescue, it did take me aback for a moment. Yeah, he did seem like such a nice guy. Seat he wound up turning her in. But you know, the mortgage. I hear you, my property taxes
are due. I might turn somebody in for there. But on a parenting note, I enjoyed when Michael said to Walt, I'm going to get your dog back as soon as it stops raining, and then it immediately He's like, great, thanks so much. We have all been there like no, no, no. When I say those things, it's supposed to buy me time. Right. He's still learning about how to be a dad. He's got a lot, he's got a lot left to learn, and he's not got the most ideal place to be learned. No, surely not. There's
one big triumph was courtesy of Locke. And you also do want to worry when your kid says, oh, yeah, I've been hanging out with this old guy down on the beach. He told me a secret. I'm not just to tell anybody. I kept waiting for him to just say, well, he taught me how to play back gammon. That's fairly innocuous. Yes, yes, it's like Michael doesn't have enough to worry about right now, and he's got to worry about the intentions of the old guy on the beach
telling his son's secrets, but then redeeming himself by letting Michael. Absolutely. Yeah, we'll just give him a pass for one week until we get his backstory a right, probably they're just playing back goodness, Well, that is another episode of Lost. How did you deal with it? There was more running in the jungle? Did you just close your eyes? Yeah? I did, Okay, I looked away when necessary and closed my eyes and uh yeah. But it wasn't too too too much, you know, it was
just a little bit. It was just Michael, you know, running away and running into into sun. And then there was you know, they keep they give us a little bit of the airplane crash flashback like almost every week, it seems, yes, they do, and it's almost always the same scene with the one shadowy body flying flying up to the ceiling and then another weather one flying out the air, wouldn't Yeah, it's just yeah. After a while it's like, oh yeah this again, right, Oh my god,
yeah I saw that. I get it. Yeah it was bad. Sure, sure these look at these schmo's down here on the beach. What are they gonna do? And this is what we're interested in? Yes, yes, so hopefully it was just that the first one was the worst. And yeah from here, so I hope so it's fun because I am interested, you know, Yeah, now I want to know. I mean, they could hardly throw throw more on the wall than they have to. Like you like this guy? I know you don't like this guy? How about
this guy? How about this? How about her? She seems interesting? No, okay, well we have about five other people over here. What do you think you know, there's just all the faceless extras who are just yeah, just the rest of the forty gambling around on the beach like no lines. Maybe I'll pick this random piece of metal up, or maybe I there's a suitcase here. I don't know. One seemed of like two people just like comparing what they'd found in suitcases, like they were making some sort
of barter like, right, got a T shirt? Here? Child says seven, once you got I got a pair of sneakers. Let's see those are better? Well. Well, next week we will continue with season one, episode four, which is called walk About. Recently people were making their lists to the best lost episodes with this coming back to Netflix, and walk About was on those lists. So okay, it is a little bit of
a game changer. So and it is also the the the lot you know, given who we focused on at the end of the episode, that is a hint as to who the next one will be flashbacking and Terry O'Quinn can bring it. Let's just say so. We will see you back here tomorrow for our weekly roundup. You don't have to take a plane, just wait for it to come up on your podcast. Thank you for listening.
