  • Trade: Pitocin 
  • Class: Hormone
  • MOA: Increases Uterine Contractions 
  • Indications: Postpartum hemorrhage after infant and placental delivery
  • Contraindications: Presence of a second fetus, unfavorable fetal position.
  • Side effects:  Hypotension, Hypertension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, angina, seizures, N/V, uterine rupture, anaphylaxis.
  • Dosing:
     
    • IM: 3-10 units after delivery of placenta 
    • IV: 20-40 milliunits/min titrate to severity of bleeding.
