Episode 2: Superheroes
Episode description
Superheroes are dumb. Superheroes are awesome. Superheroes are the lowest form of entertainment. Superheroes have become the modern-day myths.
Superheroes encapsulate our ability to hope and dream. They invite us on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. They have become a genre all to their own that invest in our senses. From epic battles to amazing worlds, superheroes inspire us to be better and to ask for justice. Yet there can be a disconnect and this immediately severs the emphatic connection. If the action is pushed too far or instead of wonder, there is a sense of distraction. Then there is a loss of humanity.
It is our shared sense of understanding and meaning that creates the idea of what if. What if I am given the same opportunity? It is no longer them but me that must fill this role. I can feel this loss or be hopeful in the face of adversity. What would I do?
The most meaningful moment in any superhero film is that choice. Time is running out, the villain is winning, and a final choice, a sacrifice, a change must be made.
“With Great Power comes Great Responsibility”
It is the belief in our choice, in our humanity that gives us the ability to change. Superheroes strive to choose justice over injustice, good over evil but it is when they are most vulnerable that they must make this decision and that is what makes them super.
