In this episode of Outside The Boards, we have the honor of interviewing Dr. Richard Caleel, the former President of the Federation of International Polo.
Dr. Caleel's polo journey began in his mid-thirties when a friendly dare led him to attend a match. Little did he know that this seemingly simple dare would profoundly alter the course of his life. The exhilaration of the fast-paced sport captured his heart, and it became a significant part of his life, spanning from Chicago to Santa Barbara.
His polo adventures took him on a global odyssey, providing him with once-in-a-lifetime thrills. This included facing off against one of the world's greatest polo players, Adolfo Cambiaso, and receiving the Most Improved Player of the Year award from His Royal Highness, Prince Charles.
After retiring from the sport, Richard's passion for polo remained undiminished. He became deeply involved with the Federation of International Polo, assuming the role of an Ambassador. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in fostering the sport's growth across the world, spanning North, Central, and South Americas, Europe, India, China, and various other countries. In 2012, he was elected as the FIP's sixth president, during which time he enhanced communication among its members and introduced polo to several new nations, including Russia, Mongolia, and China, by assisting local enthusiasts in developing the sport within their countries.
Richard's unwavering commitment to polo as an ambassador continues to shape the sport's landscape. His profound love for the game and tireless advocacy have expanded the world of polo across the globe, leaving a lasting legacy that has enriched the sport's global presence. Under his guidance, the world of polo has reached new horizons and thrives in a better place today.
