Episode description

Fruit fly is a pest that destroys fruit and fruiting vegetables in commercial crops and home gardens. It is one of the world’s worst fruit pests.

Listen to Department of Primary Industries and Regions, Nathan Rhodes and Nick Secomb, as they discuss the current fruit fly outbreaks impacting over 300 Adelaide suburbs and some of the Riverland.

Fruit fly is not established in South Australia. This means people with fruit trees can be confident their fruit won’t normally have maggots in it, and it means our commercial growers don’t have to use costly fruit fly treatments before exporting.

The cooler months offer a great opportunity for us to get on top of these outbreaks by doing fruit fly preventative gardening. Learn about what you can do in your home garden to help stop the spread!
