One of the big talking points in podcasting at the minute is Apple's new support for video podcasting using HLS. And because of that, one of the big questions is, should you be using it? And the honest answer is, it depends on your podcast. And I know it depends, kind of a bit of a cop out, but it's true. It really does depend on your podcast. Because adding video can be a good move, but only if it actually fits what you're doing. For some shows, it makes complete sense.
For example, if your podcast is interview-based or if you're already recording video for platforms like YouTube, then making that available on Apple Podcasts as well is a fairly easy win. You're not creating something new, you're just using what you already have but in another place your audience might be. But if your podcast is audio first or you don't currently record video, then this is where it's worth pausing for a second.
Because adding video isn't just a switch you flip, it changes how you record, how you edit, your setup and your workflow. And if you're doing it just because it's a new feature, there's a good chance it just becomes more work but without much return. So here's a simple way to think about it. Are you already creating video or planning to? And would your audience actually benefit from watching instead of just listening?
If the answer is yes, then it's definitely worth exploring. If not, you're probably better off continuing to focus on making your audio as strong as it can be. Because new features come and go, but a clear, engaging podcast, well, that's what keeps people listening. Until the next time, happy podcasting.
