Uhm, so I know it's a mouthful, so Meryl, how has the fishing been the last the last weeks or so?

Yeah man, it's been pretty good man.

Had to grind for it, but you know.

Uh, yeah, we've been using, uh, actually knocking tail lures, so that's all we've been using recently.

It's a it's definitely a unique bait and I I think there's something about that rattle on the tail that makes it very unique.

Sometimes when they bite, they're being a little bit difficult.

Sometimes you want to grab their attention and.

Man, it's been a pretty good bait so far, mainly been throwing the Texas Roach.

The darker colors and then the white ice looking one.

Uh, so I mean, those are the two top colors I've been using.

I usually like to use pink, but I haven't been able to throw it late recently.

I've just been kind of throwing those two colors and they've been successful, so it's like.

But then again I've only been able to go out a few times these last couple weeks, which has been a shame because I know the bite has been really good.

Uhm, but when I did go out, you know I caught on a I got on a couple £4.00 trout, some red fish with them and they've been they've been just hammering them and like you said I think that that rattle in the tail is.

Is a very good enticer for the bite and I will say that actually last year it was, uh, that flounder season for last year was one of the better ones that I've had and I was using exclusively though so.

I think there's a little bit of an ebb and flow within the industry, just as as new things come out.

Using them I know they're they're staples and a lot of people.

The Sagemont area Sage Glen area off of towards the South side of Houston.

He used to sell these lures out of his garage. They're basically these cork fluor's with a soft with the plastic on the outside and the the reason why people like them and the reason why he made them is because he wanted to make a lure that was slow sinking that stayed in strike zone longer and also provided a larger profile for.

These you know trophy trout.

I'm not exactly sure how the whole story is, but definitely it's it got bought up by mirror lure, but these are.

Or a lot of the people go to for these big trophy trout and and I guess like what are your thoughts on this?

Just kind of give us a little rundown of what you think about these.

Of those, anglers have been just like throwing lures for so long.

But I I'd like to share a story though.

Whenever you get a chance, we get a chance.

So I I made a post about it, but it was one of those, so we've been.

I'd be kind of doing any trips like later on in the day, 'cause when.

It's real, real cold seems to be the.

The water starts.

Warming up come, and if it's become more active, especially if there's a major at the end of the day.

Or you know towards the afternoon.

We've been doing pretty successful doing that, but sometimes the clients want.

To go early in.

The morning and they have a small window, so that's the option that that's the situation we had.

And I remember I even called you, I thought.

A kayaker was here.

And I was like man, is that you?

I saw it 'cause you know not too many people fish that area and the people that know about that area.

And he definitely wasn't fishing like you, so I kinda was like man, this.

Guy is a.

Man, he's a Johnstons acting weird on his kayak.

So I called you 'cause the kayak looked like just like yours, your light blue one and, well, we've seen him and and this is this is a change for me because.

I've actually got to see on a depthfinder, UM.

'cause usually I don't use fish fry. 

00:10:06 Merriel Solesky 

And I've I've dabbled.

With it here and there, I just never committed to it, but having side imaging and down imaging and actually like just looking at it, we're actually seeing the fish right?

And they're just.

Probably sitting right next to those drop offs.

No, they were sitting in the the deep. 

00:10:24 Merriel Solesky 

The deeper part because I think 'cause of the pressure was kind of high.

OK, yeah.

And so, but we couldn't catch those.

So we like we're I mean, I'm throwing everything at him.

And we were getting bites and short strikes and like they were just like hitting it and letting it go.

I was like man, you know.

And so I was like you know what?

Let's just keep looking and we we finally come up across this pocket.

I've never even known existed in that area.

Uhm, and it has structure by it, so we tried that one and something caught my attention on the fish Finder as we're going there.

So it was kind of like 6 foot 7 foot.

Eight 912-1315 and then bam, like a big old. 

00:11:13 Merriel Solesky 

Pocket, you know?

And uhm, I noticed that how they were waiting behind those when they was transitioning off.

And it looked to me like they were moving upwards and then towards this the bulkhead.

So I was like meant, so we're going.

We drifted over this big deep pocket nothing.

And we drifted one more time and I said, you know what?

Let's keep drifting and keep working, and then sure enough man, I just cast it boom, we got one and then we just started Nana after that.

Once we figured out the rhythm, I think I.

Was using a 3.

Eighths, 38 S jig head.

With the Roach with the rat.

Uh, knocking tail lure with the rattle in it and we just let him up.

After that we just kept dressed in the same area and it was just, you know, we just couldn't get the ones in the deep to buy it.

Like usually when I see him down.

There also, yeah.

They'll eat and we'll work it with the current coming down.

The current and then get them to eat, but.

Yeah, I, I think there there's something to be said about using the what we have available, such as a fish Finder and talk and using those to get.

Yeah man, I.

Find the fish and establish that pattern like.

Right, right, right?

So yeah, it's it's my game is definitely going to start changing from now on.

Obviously a lot of people who who know about them, they they a lot of people talk about this as a winter time bait and and I would like to.

Disagree in a sense, because obviously we're going to talk a little bit more about you know how to use them now because it is something that works now really well.

But I I want you to think about the and I end up talking to our listeners out there.

I want you to think about these, how these baits they could put their potential uses for out for.

Every other time outside of winter I mean.

I yeah year round year round.

Use it here right now, so yes.

They're they're.

They're not just a winter time bait and of course the and I think we set this at some point.

We were talking we. We talked about a little bit about Corky's in a previous episode, but you know, there's the whole whole adage that people will say about Corky's is like.

If you think you're working at too slow, work at slower and and I, I would say come with that.

Right?

You know you can work it fast, it just depends on what.

The fish are acting like in that area and and actually I like to give a little bit story of my own.

This is actually my best.

Yeah, go for it.

My best night fishing trip I've I had.

Besides my personal best that I caught out of a canal in the light.

When I fished out at night, it was we were, I believed it was actually February.

It was a full moon and we're out there at like 11:00 o'clock and we're running around in a boat just hop reef hopping.

We're just going to different reefs. 

00:14:28 Jonathan Hua 

Kind of following the tide as it as it flowed out. 

00:14:31 Jonathan Hua 

With the outgoing tide. 

00:14:33 Jonathan Hua 

And we're just hopping on these reefs. 

00:14:36 Jonathan Hua 

And basically we would motor up to these reefs. 

00:14:38 Jonathan Hua 

And we would listen. 

00:14:39 Jonathan Hua 

Just if we heard bait, you know, jumping and and moving around, we would hop out and wait it if we didn't hear anything we left and went somewhere else.

But basically every single place that we hopped out at.

We caught fish, and that's because and and we were using these korkis and we were listening for these bait and and.

It was like 3:00 o'clock and it was the tail in one of these ties, and we were kind of tired at that point.

We got to this last spot and it was, you know this is like February. 

00:15:09 Jonathan Hua 

It was.

I think it was in the upper at the end of that about it. 

00:15:13 Jonathan Hua 

By that time at night or I guess early morning, it was in the upper 20s about the temperature and we were in knee deep water.

Passing out to this channel. 

00:15:23 Jonathan Hua 

And and but you know, I was working it slow and I wasn't getting anything and I was kind of tired.

So my buddy though he was just basically like just.

Just yeah, basically top.

Top water action. 

00:15:36 Jonathan Hua 

Water with these core keys and just like burning it back and he was getting hammered.

Uhm, I think back to back to back casts. I he pulled up fish there were like little five round £5 on trout.

And it was just and then I I started just working it back.

Working it.

Back real quick.

Just just like.

That and I that all it all picked up.

And of course, when we got the reason why I hopped out of the last spot is because it was just.

It just sounded like mullet jumping every single second.

You could just hear him and you could hear him swimming and and.

So that was one of our best nights where we caught multiple trout over £5, nothing huge.

I think he went out there one day and he caught multiples that were like 7 and eight. Yeah, we didn't have a day like that but we caught multiple fish over £5 and it was kind of an eye opening night experience because I I usually don't fish at night like that to find that even whenever it's upper 20 degrees which is cold for around here they were still.

You know, hitting these these, these these korkis basically on a very, very aggressive kind of cadence.

Uhm, we try.

Actually, I tried topwaters, see if they would hit.

They would not hit top water right?

But it it almost seemed like I should.

You should have thrown her top water on it would have hit it but.

Just let the bait in the area dictate what you kind of do, or let the fish also help you dictate what you do with these kind of working.
