On This Day and Working Class History the tenth of January and on the tenth of January two thousand and three, university students in Bongie in the Central African Republic battles police in the streets in protest are the government not paying their scholarship grants. Students were entitled to ninety thousand cfa francs every three months, but they hadn't been paid since the previous academic year. The students burned tires and wood in the streets and stoned cars headed for a

government conference. Police and soldiers fired tear gas and gunshots, and a local newspaper reported that police had killed two students, although this was denied by the government.
