On this Day and Working Class History. The first of January and on the first of January nineteen seventy four, the UK Conservative government implemented the three day week to save electricity, the generation of which had been severely restricted by industrial action by coal miners. An overtime band by miners seeking a thirty five percent pay increase had slashed production,

and they launched an all out strike in February. All non essential businesses were limited to three consecutive days consumption, and television had stopped broadcasting at ten thirty pm.
