Summit County Sheriff's deputy Fred Hale became a millionaire after the death of his parents. His dad had made a small fortune as the inventor of the balloon tire. Hale was a minor local celebrity as the "millionaire deputy," and became well known to businessmen with whom he invested, many ladies he had relationships with (including two ex-wives), and lots of folks in the underworld after he later sought to become a private detective.
