[SPEAKER_01]: a factual day to creation facility production. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Episode 3 of the Overflow. [SPEAKER_00]: Previously I called these types of episodes the weekly overflow, but not every week will be getting one so going forward, it will just be the overflow. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess it's better than calling it the sporadical overflow.

[SPEAKER_00]: These mini episodes are just to catch up on tech and other news that didn't make it onto the previous week's episode, and also breaking news that I deem important. [SPEAKER_00]: Before I get started, I have one correction from Episode 3-10. [SPEAKER_00]: I mistakenly said that Apple's recently announced support for HLS video for podcasts wasn't bet it into the RSS feed.

[SPEAKER_00]: Upon further research, I found that this particular version of HLS is in fact not part of the RSS feed. [SPEAKER_00]: But rather a separate file all together. [SPEAKER_00]: Though the humble RSS fee does support HLS video, Apple chose to implement their version as a separate file. [SPEAKER_00]: I assume the company did this in order to be able to monetize it. [SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully in the future, the giant fruit company will support the RSS HLS tag in their app.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, let's get started. [SPEAKER_00]: This week Apple was predicted to announce a bevy of products via press releases, culminating on Wednesday with an Apple experience not event held in three different cities around the world. [SPEAKER_00]: It all kicked off Monday with release of the iPhone 17E in the iPad Air.

[SPEAKER_00]: There were many rumors about the iPhone 17E, but the big debate was about if the newest model of [SPEAKER_00]: or would it retain the notch of its predecessor? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the notch has remained. [SPEAKER_00]: Another predicted upgrade that didn't make it was the center stage front selfie camera. [SPEAKER_00]: Other predictions that didn't make it on to the 17E were, a Bend A18 CPU, the C1X modem chip and Magsafe charging capability.

[SPEAKER_00]: Briefings at the press and social media leakers didn't see coming were, the doubling of internal storage to 256 gigs, which is up from the 16E's on 128 gigs. [SPEAKER_00]: The screen, getting the latest girl a glass ceramic shield to, and a new color, pink. [SPEAKER_00]: The starting price of $599 was a thankfully retained.

[SPEAKER_00]: The C1X mode is more efficient and should extend the already great battery life of the EEC-REASE, while also providing better cellular connectivity. [SPEAKER_00]: Magsafe capability opens up the use of accessories like wallets and chargers. [SPEAKER_00]: The doubling of the base storage to 256 gigabytes is very welcome, and there's even an option to upgrade to 512 gigabytes of storage.

[SPEAKER_00]: The eSuramic Shield 2 is the same version that equips my iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I can say that this is the first phone I've filled confident enough, not to put a screen protector on. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a great upgrade. [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely no one had any new color on their bingo card and it came as quite the surprise. [SPEAKER_00]: It's actually a very light shade of pink and four night could tell from the pictures. [SPEAKER_00]: It looks very tasteful.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you're into that color, in my opinion this upgrade was a pretty solid one. [SPEAKER_00]: These series is in my future as I age out of having to have the best iPhone. [SPEAKER_00]: As I become less mobile, I find myself relying on larger screen devices, such as my 13-inch iPad Pro, but web browsing email and text thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll be switching over to an E-Series phone when it gains the dynamic island, and a 120Hz refresh rate promotion display.

[SPEAKER_00]: The single 48 megapixel rear [SPEAKER_00]: An upgraded iPad Air was also announced via press release on Monday, and was basically a chip upgrade from the M2 to the M4 Apple Silicon chip. [SPEAKER_00]: The Air also got the C1X modem if you get the sailor version, and a RAM upgrade to 12 gigabytes. [SPEAKER_00]: That's up from the 8 gigs of its predecessor. [SPEAKER_00]: Apple's own N1 chip was also added, which will improve Wi-Fi performance.

[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, the base storage remains at 128GB. [SPEAKER_00]: The price is for the iPad Air also remained the same. [SPEAKER_00]: $599 for the base 11-inch model, and $799 for the base 13-inch model. [SPEAKER_00]: My lovely wife just got gifted the M2-13 inch iPad Air for Christmas, and she kind of loves it, more on that in the episode on Sunday.

[SPEAKER_00]: In the distant past she had an Intel-based MacBook Air, once she got her first modern iPad while she didn't use the MacBook at all. [SPEAKER_00]: Same has happened to me. [SPEAKER_00]: Once iPad OS was upgraded to be more Mac OS like, I find myself seldom using my M215 inch MacBook Air. [SPEAKER_00]: Once the iPad Air gets an OLED Pro motion screen, I will most likely switch to that from my iPad Pro.

[SPEAKER_00]: However, the keyboard attachment is important to me, so I would like to see improvements in the Air's version of it. [SPEAKER_00]: On Tuesday morning Apple dropped 4, Adam 4 announcements, and also leaked details of another product by accident. [SPEAKER_00]: The first products to be announced were the 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pros. [SPEAKER_00]: There was no redesign here as expected.

[SPEAKER_00]: However, you can now equip these two MacBooks with either an M5 Pro chip or an M5 Max chip. [SPEAKER_00]: The Apple N1 networking chip is also present on these updated models. [SPEAKER_00]: Apple claims that these new chips advance architecture brings a 30% faster overall performance with them. [SPEAKER_00]: The GPU graphics chip was also updated which Apple says will result in a 50% increase in graphics performance.

[SPEAKER_00]: and up to four times faster, large language model AI processing. [SPEAKER_00]: These storage has also been bumped up. [SPEAKER_00]: The M5 Pro MacBook starts at 1 terabytes, while the M5 Max model starts at 2 terabytes. [SPEAKER_00]: The SSDs are now fast recording Apple. [SPEAKER_00]: Battery life also got a slight increase, with the 14 inch model at 24 hours and the 16 inch getting 22 hours before needing a recharge.

[SPEAKER_00]: The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro chip starts at $2,199. [SPEAKER_00]: While the M5 Max model starts at $3,599. [SPEAKER_00]: The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro chip starts at $2,699. [SPEAKER_00]: And finally, the M5 Max chip version starts at $3,899. [SPEAKER_00]: I've only owned one MacBook Pro which was the last Intel-based model. [SPEAKER_00]: I also had the last Intel-based MacBook Air at the same time.

[SPEAKER_00]: I preferred the Air and traded that MacBook Pro for my current M2 chip to 15-inch MacBook Air. [SPEAKER_00]: The Intel MacBook Pro was traded in for my current M2 Mac Mini. [SPEAKER_00]: If you do have a video editing another paid content creation, [SPEAKER_00]: If not, the MacBook Air is the way to go. [SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of which, the MacBook Air now comes with a base M5 chip. [SPEAKER_00]: And like the MacBook Pro Z SSDs are faster.

[SPEAKER_00]: Last year, I think it was last year, all Mac computers received an upgrade to 16 gigs of RAM, and this time around, well, Mac books at least are getting a base storage increase. [SPEAKER_00]: The air space storage is now 512 gigabytes up from 256 gigabytes. [SPEAKER_00]: Storage and RAM options have also increased.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can now equip your M5 MacBook Air with up to 32 gigs of RAM and 4 terabytes [SPEAKER_00]: These M5 airs also have Wi-Fi 7 standards capability thanks to the N1 networking chip. [SPEAKER_00]: Along with these hardware upgrades, the new MacBooks also got a cost upgrade to the tune of $100. [SPEAKER_00]: The 13-inch model starts at $1,09, while the 15-inch model starts at $1,299.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you do normal computing along with audio and light video editing, these are the MacBooks for you. [SPEAKER_00]: But if you don't ever do audio video editing, and just need to do things like word processing, email, and web browsing, and maybe some content consumption. [SPEAKER_00]: I recommend date 13-inch iPad Air with a third-party keyboard attachment in mouse. [SPEAKER_00]: It would be slightly cheaper than a MacBook Air, and be plenty powerful for your needs.

[SPEAKER_00]: Sure you can spend a couple hundred more and get a 13-inch MacBook Air. [SPEAKER_00]: What the iPad Air also has a touchscreen. [SPEAKER_00]: I won't even consider upgrading my current M2 MacBook Air until Apple upgrades the display [SPEAKER_00]: Besides new MacBooks, Apple also announced a two new studio displays. [SPEAKER_00]: The base studio display in the Studio Display XDR. [SPEAKER_00]: Both models boast a 5K resolution 27-inch screens.

[SPEAKER_00]: The base studio display features two Thunderbolt 5 ports, a two USB-C ports, 600 nits of brightness, and a 12 megapixel center stage camera with desk view. [SPEAKER_00]: Also a Studio Quality 3 microphone array, and 6 speaker sound, featuring two high-performance [SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, this base model still has a 60Hz display refresh rate.

[SPEAKER_00]: The studio display XDR has all the features of the studio display plus a 120Hz refresh rate, adaptive sync, a whopping 2,000 nits of brightness, MP3 and Adobe RGB wide color gamut. [SPEAKER_00]: The base studio display will set you back $1,599, and the studio display XDR will cost you. [SPEAKER_00]: Are you ready? [SPEAKER_00]: $3,299. [SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_00]: Whoa! [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the XDR is aimed solely at the pro market.

[SPEAKER_00]: While the regular studio display is aimed at the well-heeled consumer. [SPEAKER_00]: I fit neither of these categories. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, sure, I can afford the plain studio display. [SPEAKER_00]: But at that price, I just can't justify buying it. [SPEAKER_00]: I could probably find an LG monitor with almost the same specs with a 120Hz display refresh rate for half that 1599 price tag. [SPEAKER_00]: And still have enough money left over to buy a top-of-the-line webcam for it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Apple experienced a little oopsie Tuesday morning. [SPEAKER_00]: Members of the tech press found an Apple website referring to the MacBook Neo, which is the name of the new low-cost MacBook that was announced Wednesday morning. [SPEAKER_00]: Along with the name leak, the page showed that this MacBook will feature two USB-C ports along with a headphone jack. [SPEAKER_00]: Despite some rumors, no magsafe charging connector is included.

[SPEAKER_00]: I bet you someone wound up in some hot ward of that morning. [SPEAKER_00]: As predicted on Wednesday morning, Apple announced the MacBook Neo and gave it its own day. [SPEAKER_00]: The previous days leak proved credible. [SPEAKER_00]: The MacBook Neo doesn't fact have two USB-C connectors, but one is USB-C-2 and the other is USB-C-3. [SPEAKER_00]: The main difference here is data transfer speed. [SPEAKER_00]: The base model comes with 8 gigs of RAM with no upgrade options.

[SPEAKER_00]: It also comes with 256GB of storage, an HD FaceTime camera and a 13-inch liquid retina display. [SPEAKER_00]: And this display doesn't have a notch. [SPEAKER_00]: Instead, the camera is mounted within the ample bezels of the display. [SPEAKER_00]: Or on that later. [SPEAKER_00]: The Neo is powered with an Apple A18 Pro chip, which previously powered the iPhone 16 Pro. [SPEAKER_00]: The colors available are silver, indigo, blush, and citrus.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Neo's non-backlit keyboard will match the color of the device. [SPEAKER_00]: The price for this base model is $599. [SPEAKER_00]: But $100 more you can get 512 gigabytes of storage along with the addition of a touch ID module on the keyboard. [SPEAKER_00]: The MacBook Neo is an interesting computer that will probably sell very well. [SPEAKER_00]: It might even eat into iPad sales, but Apple has showed us in the past that they don't mind cannibalize in their own product sales.

[SPEAKER_00]: Upon viewing the official Apple video of the Neo, the first thing that caught my eye [SPEAKER_00]: That's why there's no need for a notch. [SPEAKER_00]: It says if Apple has taken the display from an iPad Air, deactivated the touchscreen capability, and married it to a permanent keyboard. [SPEAKER_00]: The lack of backlighting for the keyboard, and no option to upgrade the RAM, will keep the Neo from eating into MacBook Air sales.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be giving my opinions on all these new Apple releases on Sunday's regular OFNT [SPEAKER_00]: Regardless, it was a busy week for Apple. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll see you Sunday. [SPEAKER_00]: Take care.
