Surfing is not a sport. It's a way of life. No hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying hey bud, let's party! Dr. Ryan here. Today we're going to be looking at leadership lessons from 1 Samuel chapter 5. Now 1 Samuel 5 narrates the events following the Philistines capture of the Ark of the Covenant. Now it focuses on the Ark's journey through the various Philistine cities and then the subsequent calamities that come upon the Philistines as they capture the Ark.

This chapter has some really good insights, particularly about the power of respecting sacred symbols, leverage, the importance of humility, and the consequences of ignoring true authority. Now the first thing we want to look at is the respect for sacred symbols. So after capturing the Ark, the Philistines place it in the temple of their god Dagon.

Now the following morning they go in, they find the statue of Dagon has fallen face down before the Ark with its head and its hands completely broken off in verses 3 and 4. This humiliation of their god Dagon demonstrates the supremacy of Christ over Israel, over the Philistine isle. For leaders, this underscores the importance of respecting the sacred in our life. Attempting to subordinate or mishandle what is sacred can lead to significant repercussions.

We should understand that these symbols carry profound meaning and power beyond what we can immediately perceive about them. So respecting these maintain harmony and they avoid unintended consequences. Now we want to look at part 2 here. The Philistines thought that they were on God's side. They were wrong. They asked God every day, what are you doing and how can I be a part of it. I pray this several times a week.

Now the second thing is we want to see the humility in the leadership. Now the Philistines reaction to the calamities that strike them is crucial. They have plagues, they have tumors that afflict the cities of Ashtod, Gath and Ekron as the Ark moves from place to place in verses 6 through 12. The Philistines leaders are forced to recognize the power of the God of Israel and eventually decide to return the Ark to the Israelites to stop the suffering.

Now this series of events teaches leaders the value of humility. The Philistine leaders initially believe that they can control or leverage the captured Ark for their benefit. But they quickly learn the importance of acknowledging forces that are greater than themselves. Now real leaders understand they have a humble recognition of their limitations, their need for correction because this is vital in maintaining humility.

Admitting when we've overstepped or misunderstood a situation can prevent further harm and guide our lives back to stability. I'm going to ask you a few questions. Are you assuming that you have leverage in your life but without having God's favor? A lot of people have leverage, financial leverage, business leverage, relational leverage. Just because you have leverage doesn't mean that you have God's favor. Those are two different things.

The last thing, we see the consequences of ignoring true authority. The Philistines ordeal illustrates the dangers of ignoring true spiritual authority. By placing the Ark in the Temple of Dagon, the Philistines attempt to equate their God with the God of Israel. However, the subsequent events make it clear that the Ark represents a power and an authority far beyond what they had anticipated.

We can learn from this that dismissing or underestimating the true source of power and authority in our life can lead to failure and disaster. Recognizing and aligning with the genuine authority, Christ, whether it is ethical principles or values or beliefs, is crucial for sustaining leadership. Ignoring these foundations can result in conflict, failure, and a loss of respect. There's a lot in this chapter. I encourage you to go through and read it. It gives us some timeless lessons.

That's why we're looking at all these leadership lessons through First Samuel. There's so much good stuff in here. Today we learned about respecting sacred things, the importance of humility, the consequences of misunderstanding leverage, understanding true authority. These are very important insights for helping us navigate the complex environments that we find ourselves in every single day. Hey, thanks for watching.
