Dr. Ryan here today we're going to be looking at leadership lessons from 1st Samuel chapter 3. 1st Samuel 3 is the story of Samuel's call by God that provides profound insights into leadership that remain relevant today. Now this narrative set in the temple where the young Samuel serves under Eli the priest is rich with lessons for how we can respond to our calling in our life and develop the sensitivity that we need to be able to impact other people.
Now 1 we want to look at the importance of spiritual sensitivity. The story begins with Samuel sleeping in the temple near the Ark of the Covenant and a symbol of God's presence. When God calls Samuel he initially mistakes the voice for Eli's. This illustrates a crucial lesson for leaders. Being attuned to the subtle and often unexpected ways in which guidance or insight may come. Leaders must cultivate an inner sensitivity to discern and recognize moments of calling or inspiration.
Now just as Samuel needed to be still and to be receptive, modern leaders, us, we need to create the space for quiet reflection and listen for the guidance that might emerge through those circumstances when we slow down.
Now I feel this is something in my life often sometimes I'll feel like I should just slow down literally as I'm walking or as I'm talking so that I can have the right word to say to someone or also maybe just have the ability to do some empathic listening so that I can do the ministry of presence which mostly revolves around just slowing down long enough to actually hear where people are coming from. Now 2 we want to look at the value of humility and openness to learning.
Samuel's responses to his call despite his initial confusion shows his humility and a willingness to learn. Here he does not assume that he understands the situation but instead he seeks guidance from Eli. Now this openness is a vital trait for leaders even seasoned leaders must remain open to learning and acknowledging that they don't have all of the answers. So for example I have 3 degrees.
Now what this has taught me is that even within my areas of study and specialty I have a limited knowledge and a limited experience based on my life. So remaining open to new data remaining open to new insight is key in continuing to develop as a person and as a leader and as a way of keeping life interesting. So by seeking advice and being teachable we can grow and make more informed decisions.
Samuel's repeated willingness to go to Eli each time that he hears the call shows that effective leadership involves a continuous readiness to learn and adapt. Now lastly the power of mentorship and guidance that's the third thing that we want to look at. Now Eli's role in this narrative is equally significant recognizing that God was calling Eli and he instructs him on how to respond. Eli's guidance underscores the importance of mentorship in leadership.
You always want to have people that you're learning from. Now experienced leaders have the responsibility to nurture and guide the next generation leaders. This is how this whole thing is passed on helping them to understand and respond to their calling. Eli's patience and wisdom in directing Samuel on how to respond to his call is a reminder that leadership is not just about making decisions but also about fostering growth in others.
Now effective leaders create environments where emerging leaders can discover and respond in their unique calling. Now I think this is something that Ocean Water has done well. I've sought to identify leaders early and develop them through new opportunities and make sure control is given away 100% so people grow through learning to make their own decisions themselves. That's how we grow. You feel the weight of the decision making.
Now we must multiply leaders as rapidly and as quickly as possible if we want to multiply leaders as quickly as possible. Seems like I'm repeating myself but I'm actually not. It's a simple overlooked lesson that most people miss. So in conclusion, 1 Samuel 3 offers us some timeless leadership lessons, the necessity of being spiritually sensitive, open to new insights, the value of humility and a teachable spirit and the profound impact of having mentors in your life.
