Hey, Dr. Ryan here. Now today we want to look at some leadership lessons from First Samuel Chapter 2. This is going to give us some tools to help us be better leaders. So First Samuel Chapter 2 offers us some really great insights into the contrasting examples of Eli, his sons, and Samuel. Now here are three leadership lessons that we can draw from this chapter. I always want to have our main text for all of this stuff be the Bible. So I try to pull stuff out of there.

Now the first thing is the importance of integrity in leadership. First Samuel Chapter 2 verse 12 through 17. Now the context here is that Eli's sons, Hathne and Phenaeus, were priests and they acted corruptly. They disregarded the practices and exploited their position from personal gain. Now effective leaders demonstrate integrity and uphold ethical standards. Eli's sons' actions showed how they had a lack of integrity and it can lead to a downfall of leadership.

They took more than what was prescribed from the offerings. They treated the Lord's offerings with contempt. This behavior not only dishonored God, but it eroded the people's trust. I made a list recently of over 10 very public figures in the religious world that had had very public failures, breaches of integrity, breaking trustful people. I will say this, the worst of the worst are people who use others for their own purposes.

How in the world are you claiming to serve Jesus and follow his teachings of being a servant when you're just using people to build your own little kingdom? So we don't want to do that. The answer is obvious. You're not following God if you're using people to build your own little kingdom. Jesus saved the sharpest words for religious leaders who had influence and self-made authority and they used those assets to their advantage. We don't want to do that.

So leaders must maintain a strong moral compass and ensure that their actions aligned with ethical principles, integrity builds trust and respect amongst leaders. And while corruption and dishonesty can lead to a leader's ruin, and then ultimately just the loss of all the influence in your life. So everything you have built in your life can be gone with one careless decision.

So we want to be humble, we want to serve others, we want to go slow with big things and rejoice along the way that God is good. Now the second thing, let's look at accountability and consequences. So a man of God confronts Eli about his failure to discipline his sons. Despite knowing their wrongdoings, Eli did not take action to correct them. Now the prophet warns Eli of severe consequences that his family will face due to his negligence.

Listen, if you're not disciplining your kids or people in your life that you need to say things to and keeping them accountable, you're doing them a disservice. You're only hurting them. So leaders are accountable for their actions and the actions of the people that they lead. So Eli's failure to hold his sons accountable led to their downfall and his family's loss of favor with God. Now the prophecy declared that Eli's family would be stripped of their priestly role

and his descendants would suffer. This is exactly what happened. So leaders must enforce accountability and address misconduct promptly. Ignoring or excusing unethical behavior can lead to disastrous outcomes, even if you're a volunteer leader. Leadership has to hold people to an account regardless of whether or not you do this as a volunteer or if you're paid. So the value of humility and obedience is the last thing that we want to look at.

In contrast to Eli's sons, Samuel grew in favor with both God and people. He served humbly and faithfully under Eli's guidance, setting a positive example for his actions. So Samuel's growth in stature and favor was a direct result of his humble service and adherence to God's ways. Humility and obedience are crucial qualities for us, unlike Eli's sons, who abuse their positions. Samuel's humble obedience set him apart and prepared him for future leadership.

Leadership always culp of humility and being open to learning and growing. Obedience to ethical and moral guidelines fosters trust and respect. A leader's willingness to serve and follow can inspire others to do the same, creating a culture of integrity and respect, which is exactly what we want.

So for Samuel too, it teaches us about integrity, about accountability, about humility, Eli's stories, the cautionary tale of the dangers of neglecting those things, while Samuel's early life exemplifies the positive impact of humble and obedient service. By integrating these lessons, we can foster trust, ensure accountability, and lead with a strong moral foundation.

Hey, thanks so much for tuning in today. I put these things together to help keep us sharp, help keep us humble, help keep us stoked on God. Until next time, I hope you have a beautiful day.
