That song we sang about how God never lets us down And that's true, but it also has to do with expectations So we get let down when we have expectations Or we thought that something should happen that didn't happen So life in so many ways is an expectation game And so the trick is to put our expectations in line with God's expectations That's the journey that we're on So God brings it back to simple things He's like, if you have a spouse you're blessed If you have food you're blessed
If you have work you're blessed If you have clothing you're blessed And so it alters your perspective in so many ways, right?
When you start to align your expectations for yourself and for life with God And that's a powerful thing And tonight I want to remind us how much God's taking care of us Everyone here today, we had something to eat We had some hydration, we had some water We had some food, we had our family So I just feel grateful I got to see Kinsley see kind It's so awesome, so awesome So God's good And sometimes we look for God in the big But actually the expectations are really just the small things
And so when we can adjust our expectations to what God has That is where the real joy of life comes from When you realize, well, it's my relationship with God It's my relationship with my friends With the people that are in my life And then how do I use my relationships with God, my relationship with my wife My husband, my family, my friends How do I use my relationship with God, my relationship with my friends
To bless other people? It's a total mindset shift And that actually is part of our worship The Bible talks about Giving's interesting Giving is actually reflective of worship But it's reflective of Jesus because Jesus gave his life So Jesus was trying to model Like through the giving and through the sacrifice Comes the ministry and the blessing to others It's this really powerful, deep concept So when we say that giving is part of worship It's so deep
And really to understand it correctly is like actually It can't be worship without giving Because Jesus gave his life He gave who he was So the Bible encourages us to do that To be open-handed, to be generous It also includes our The setting aside of the resources that we've been blessed with For the furtherment of the kingdom of God So let me explain this idea to you Because it's something we've tried to I've always tried to practice in my life
But I also want you to understand how we've practiced it at Ocean Water And in my life I've always Ever since I found my faith I've always set aside part of the first part of my income To give to the kingdom of God I've always did that from when I was just starting out Sometimes we learn that lesson later But I've always operated by that I can't say that not only have my needs always been met But God's always given me the joy of being able to see other people Like blessed in ministry
And also here at Ocean Water We have from the beginning This started, I always go back to this It started as a guys group with myself and Adam and Ivan And Mike comes down And the core of our Ocean Water was always this guys group It's still the same guys group Group of men that like Let's read the Bible, let's try to do what it says And out of that a lot of goodness in them And I want to explain to you like how God is used at Mitch came to our guys group Mitch felt called to be the pastor
Mitch is now in another country And just so you know I pray with Mitch Hi Mitch, he watches everything That's why we do this by the way We're not trying to like beat big time I don't care about that We actually have some popos watching tonight in El Salvador Because it feeds in Mitch is watching tonight in Argentina because it feeds in Who are those people?
Those are people that God brought that we had a relationship with That actually went other places to start a church Really powerful So Mitch has And I want to brag on those guys just for a second Because Mitch has like eight guys now He's been down there for like I don't know a month He's got like eight guys in the Bible study So Popo like a few weeks ago had About 30 people in his house for church Amazing Brad who came here like I pointed Brad out last week
He has like 40 people at a coffee shop Like a church and a coffee shop So why do I brag on those guys?
Because when you give when we talk about giving You know like a finance you talk about tithing I want you to know what you're giving to us We're trying to Raise up leaders to plant more churches Because I believe in guys like Steve And these guys In addition to what God's doing here You know And I'll say this like we have been We've been I want to brag to you guys We have been very generous This 20 people here tonight This church has already
Given a bunch of money to Mitch to help him start this church And I'm proud of that that's open handed That's awesome The same thing with some Popo With our water system and other things we've done down there I think we've invested over $20,000 already down there That's awesome Adam, I brag on Adam Adam reached out to a friend of his And a friend of his purchased our water system for Indonesia That's exciting that is total generosity When you're talking about that
So I just want you to catch some of the spirit of what we do And kind of why we do it And align your giving to that sense of worship God I want to give so we can see other people raise steps See other people being leaders And you know because I believe that if you're open handed and you give Then God will always put stuff in your hand You see what I mean, understand?
Sometimes we miss that You see if we're open handed And we're giving, God will always make sure you have Always So I want you to think about your worship tonight There's a place to do it We keep redirecting our resources to be a blessing To help plant churches to encourage other leaders And we're going to keep doing that And we want giving to be a part of your worship tonight You can do it on them though, you can do it on our website You can tithe there
We take that very seriously, we're excited about it I was going to pray for the kids but I think they're already screwing next door I'm still here What's that again? I'm still here You are still here So I just want to pray for tonight And then Adam's going to teach us the next part of Acts So can we pray? Well, I guess I'm picking up kind of our That's where Ryan left off last week, we were rolling the wraps and basically Jesus' resurrection and His ascension to heaven So, kind of picking up where Ryan left off Jesus ascends to heaven and it's a new apostle and a new apostle basically is chosen That's kind of what the Acts entails These are letters written by Luke to Theopolis And who is Theopolis? A lot of people just think there's many different
Is it a person? Was it a Roman person, a Christian?
Or maybe a lot of people just think it was just a Basically just God lovers So these are letters from Luke to Theopolis to basically just God lovers Who would have loved God Some even say the book of Acts are considered the Acts of the Holy Spirit So it's pretty cool The finished work of Jesus was basically on the cross And the unfinished work of Jesus continues through all of His new generations So as a human being we become those who the Holy Spirit Endwells and empowers
So what Ryan talked about last week was basically the 40 days after Jesus rose from the dead Until the time that He basically ascends into heaven And throughout this time He's basically teaching all of His disciples He's showing His face, I think He showed Himself to 500 people And just kind of showed Him that He is who He was And that He made Himself basically real again And Jesus basically demands His followers not to depart from Jerusalem But to wait for the promise of the Father
And that's where basically Verse 1 through verse 11 That's when Jesus basically ascends to heaven And that's where He had to do it And He could have done it in many ways possible But He wanted to do it in front of His followers, in front of His disciples So they actually can see Maybe in their own way, the first time He died He came back to life He came back in that sense But He wanted to show them that this is going to be the final time So that time was the time for Him These are my cousins
They're wonderful Go on in So basically that was what He was doing So basically we started off If I end up with verse 1 through 11, I'm going to pick up on verse 12 So basically verse 12 starts with the followers of Jesus and their return to Jerusalem Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount Call of Olivet Which was near Jerusalem, the Sabbath Days Journey And when they had entered they went up into the upper room where they were staying
Peter, James, John, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot And Judas the son of James These all continue with 1 of 4 in prayer and supplication With the woman and Mary and the mother of Jesus and with His brothers So there's a critical decision the disciples have to make here And basically they have to go back to Jerusalem and wait And what they're waiting for, they're waiting basically for the Holy Spirit
And a lot of that comes with that trust Trusting in the Lord And when they return to Jerusalem, that took a lot of obedience basically And basically in Acts 1, that's what they had to do They had to forget the sermon right after they heard it And they actually had to do what Jesus told them to do Even though He was no longer physically present with them And then so they left basically on a Sabbath It was a Sabbath Day Journey
And that basically, the Mount of Olives was just right outside of ancient Jerusalem And this describes basically, it was basically like a short distance they had to travel to get over there And when they entered, they basically went up into the upper room They went up to the upper room And in Acts 1, verse 15 it tells us that there was about 120 people present In the room at that time And this included 11 disciples 12 like minus Judas, because we all know what happened to Judas
And they basically sold out Jesus Along with Mary, who was the mother of Jesus The brothers of Jesus, James and Jude And the women who followed Jesus and many others It's funny because the brothers of Jesus were actually there too A lot of other times I think throughout Jesus' life they didn't really believe that He was the Son of God And Jesus, you know And then after His resurrection they realized, they were like, man, you are who you say you are
And it would probably be hard for me probably growing up too If my brother told me throughout growing up that he was God I don't really know how to take it by the way, you know A lot of times I was like, Adam, clean the garage And I'm like, why?
And he's like, I forgot Don't question me, just do it So I can only imagine growing throughout his life And the brothers, I wonder if he said it or was this like a singing way he could put it Throughout time they were probably just like, there was probably just disbelief After He died and then His resurrection And then finally when you get a sense to heaven it's like, okay You see it, you know, you see it and you feel it And it's like, okay, that's all you needed to finally
You know, for me a lot of times I have to see things in order to believe it You know, they saw it with their own eyes, it's like, okay, this is real You know, so that took a lot of faith basically So basically that leads us right to verse 14 They all continued with one accord They were all thinking the same But what a change from before You know, there was now, you know, like a note There was more, there was a notable unity now You know, after they all saw this
You know, before it seemed that they were always In the gospels, it seemed like they were always kind of like fighting and bickering But what a change, it was Peter was still, you know Kind of had a history of denying the Lord Matthew was still a tax collector Simon was a zealot And there were still differences but the resurrection Seeing Jesus' resurrection and watching Him ascend It basically, it filled their hearts with something greater than their differences basically
They were like, oh, that's it, we don't have to all regret everything But that was like our common theme right there You know, so they all continued with one accord And prayer and supplication And so what that means is This was like a notable prayer They all prayed and continued in supplication What does supplication mean?
That means basically like praying with a sense of desperation You know, praying with an earnestness to it So they were like really praying, you know They were praying, they wanted a return They were praying for a sign And they were praying with supplication You know, and that is when you do that It's a way of praying, that's a way of offering yourself to God in prayer With like great devotion and earnestness And that's the thing, when they're all praying together
The synergy of all these guys together One group praying on the same thing Like I said before the last time It's like one and one makes three The energy of all of us working together is what's going to Is what the commonality That's when the synergy of everything works together When it's, as a martial artist When I used to read all these books on strategy And mindset and like sun-sue, art of war One of the biggest things is if I was ever like To take over anything or anything
It's like you want them to disagree You want them to disagree on everything If people are unified, people agree It's really hard to break it, to break that You know, and so Like divide and conquer If you're going to take over in other countries That's the same thing as well You want them to disagree on everything Whether it's politics, whether it's religion Whether it's, you know, abortion Whether it's vaccines Or just make them disagree And have that disagreeness Is what pulls away from unity
And when they're here, they're all in unity They're all in the same accord They're all in the same minds They're all praying in supplication And in desperation And that's what was like That's what the power of it all comes together So basically that kind of leads us into Verse 16 And in, or verse 15 to 20 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of disciples All together the number of the names was about 120 And said, Mid and brethren, this scripture had to be fulfilled
Which the Holy Spirit spoke before By the mouth of David concerning Judas Who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus For he was numbered with us And obtained a part in this ministry Now this man purchased a field With the wages of iniquity And failing and falling headlong He burst open in the middle And all his entrails gushed out And it became known to all those dwellings in Jerusalem So that field is called in their own language Akilbama And that is the field of blood
Which I still think today is named after the field of blood Further written in the book of Psalms Let his dwelling place be desolate And let no one live in it And let another take his office So basically at this time Peter This is where we see a wisdom of Peter That we haven't really seen before And Judas didn't And basically Peter is basically explaining that Judas didn't spoil God's plan You know that was what happened with Judas That had to happen in order for God's plan to be fulfilled And
And here Peter took it And basically by taking that natural leadership role He basically We basically see it in the first time In the Bible that Peter is quoting actually scripture You know so Why God wanted them to choose another disciple To officially replace Judas You know that was the question And I know they wanted me to 12 disciples again And basically from what I'm understanding is God wanted 12 disciples And the devil is a sneaky guy You know he's always trying to sneak his way in
And winning the battle he felt He thought that if I could steal Judas from you And then I know God wants to have 12 disciples And now he only has 11 because one of them ended up being a traitor Is everything going to be fulfilled like he said Maybe that Satan thinks maybe he won then Because you said there's going to be 12 Ha I got you to only 11 And look now I win You know so they're like no we're not going to let that happen We're going to fulfill that seed You know so basically
It is written for the first time in the Bible Like I said that Peter is quoting scripture And then God wanted them to choose another disciple To officially replace Judas So they will have 12 disciples once again And this is what they were going to do Out of 120 people How do you choose which is going to be the next disciple You know so they had to choose Basically off of these qualifications They basically chose two And one of the qualifications
That was in verse 21 and 22 so I'm going to read that really fast So basically the qualifications are stated And two men are nominated So therefore of these two men Of these men we have a compa who have accompanied us all the time And that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us Beginning from the baptism of John To that day when he was taken up from us One of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection And they proposed to Joseph called Barcaus Who was certain a justice and Mathias
Or Matias Is it Matias or Matias?
Matias I always ask that, it's the law student there Yes, so yeah basically The qualifications One of them must become a witness with us Someone who was there the whole time And this was the main job of the disciple That would replace Judas And now that Jesus had ascended into heaven It was more important than ever to have a witness of his resurrection To be the 12th disciple Because you don't want, like I said You don't want to say someone that Or have someone that, hey were you there?
They're like no but I was told about it It's like no, you want the witness to be You want them to be a part of it To be able to see it, to be able to say I'm going to be a witness to it And that's one of the qualifications So basically in verse 24 to 26 The disciples pray and they cast lots To select or replace them for Judas Casting lots is like throwing bones Or like rolling dice Basically a lot of people said When Matias was selected They were like was that really the choice for God?
Because you're throwing dice Or you're rolling your bows Or casting lots, is that how That just could be luck But then it goes back to Proverbs 16-33 It says the lot is cast into the lap But it's every decision is from the Lord So it doesn't matter what is thrown God already knows what the octagon is making He's already making the octagon So they threw the lots And some people were questioning it Maybe after the fact But when it's said and done If you go back in the scripture
Like I said, God already knows The selection, the He knows what's the outcome of the lots Throwing before it even happens So that was beautiful And when he threw the lots Basically he fell on Matias And something that the lots I said before, some things that the lots were wrong And it should have fell on Paul But Paul did it basically in due time That is time to come And that's one thing in life Some things we always want things to happen now And we want it to lead line
But God has a timing for everything And God's time is when God's time happens And so that's what we have to That's what we have to kind of pump our brakes And we got to be able to hit You know what? I want it when I want it To make sure that I want to pump my brakes And God will give it to me when He wants me to have it You know sometimes I just make the simplest things Driving down the street Why is this happening to me?
But then you realize that the reason why I stopped And then there's a set minus one And I was like man if I would have drove through I mean everything happened for a reason I would have been on the receiving end of that truck So God's timing is God's timing And everything happens for a reason and so it called me And he was like yeah the locks didn't fall on me But they threw them on Matthias But everything happens for a reason And my time will be when God has me ready Or basically for my time
And so they didn't want to leave And they didn't want to leave that spot vacant either Like I said because they wanted to have All of the 12 little spots filled They didn't want to seem to feel like they wanted to I took away one of your guys and there's only 11 Look God you want a 12 and I got you 11 And he was like no we're going to fill it We're not going to let Satan fulfill that And we're going to do it So basically Matthias was numbered with the other 11 apostles
And basically what it's all said and done We kind of made all of our big decisions The way the disciples did We probably wouldn't be making any wrong decisions Because the disciples they obeyed The disciples were in fellowship The disciples were in the scriptures The disciples wanted to do God's will The disciples wanted to be sanctified from the sense They did what Jesus did And they did what they could to rely on God Because at that time everything was
You're a disciple and you can do it to rely on God So I think when it's all said and done There's three important steps In basically making real Godly decisions And that's being obedient Which is following God's rules It's having good fellowship Which is surrounding yourself by like minded individuals And Christians and people with good values And also pray to God Pray to God daily Ask God questions And just live your life around those values So yeah I think that was
Acts 1 was a real eye opening for a lot of people And a lot of people had to see that In order to like Jesus' brothers In order to really believe And then replacing Judas with the 12th Apostle was very important Because we didn't want the devil to win And we wanted to make sure that we were fulfilling God's destiny So if I did it all wrong I totally apologize Yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah No that was great, thank you And I liked what you said about how to make good decisions How to make good choices

So our guys mini church, what's that mean? Well the smallest form of church is like two people. So we have a guys mini church there's like anywhere from four to like eight of us. We now meet at Antoine's down the street on Mondays at 11 a.m. if anybody, any guys want to come. We have lunch now at 11 and we just like read a little bit.
Hey how can we pray for each other if you want to come? There are also some women who've been trying to form one, get one going with Julie. She may or may not be in the back or whatever but Julie's going to teach next week. So if you're interested in being a part of that. We also have like different people that just like are in these little reading groups on their phone. Like in the new version you can like get a little reading plan, you can read each day.
I want to encourage you to be a part of that. I also just want to give you like an update. We had a bunch of trips planned this year but we're now going to push our trips back basically until next summer just because of all of the travel, we're going to let all the travel stuff sort of settle in so there's like clarity for everybody about that. Just wanted you to know that. So be thinking about next summer. We'll have some opportunities to go some different places to help people.
Got some really exciting innovations happening on the water side with some solar powered platforms that actually turn air into water which is super romantic. So Amir who spoke two weeks ago has invited us to come to Pakistan so over the next year I'll see if anybody wants to go to that trip as well.
