Episode description

Ever feel like you're running a marathon, day in and day out? As a nurse, I can attest to that constant push and the relentless drive it takes to make it through. I'm Lauren Chapnick, and I'll be your guide through this incredible journey. In my personal experience, the heart of a nurse is often fueled by an intense 'why' - a compelling reason that keeps us going when the going gets tough. My 'why' stemmed from a profound interaction with a kind nurse at the tender age of 19, a moment that propelled me towards this noble profession.

In the world of nursing, one small act of compassion can make an immense difference. Everyday, we have the power to make a profound impact on someone's life, to be their source of strength and will to survive. We'll delve into this concept, and I'll share the strategies that got me through nursing school, including a simple yet effective habit - daily practice. Much like training for a marathon, this consistency can shape your mental and emotional resilience, helping you to face the big exam day with confidence. Also, I'll introduce my seven habits for sustained success in nursing and beyond. So, join us in this journey, and let's make a difference, one small act at a time.

Speaker 2

Hello everyone and welcome to Nursing Student Coach . This is your host . I am Lauren Chapnick , and since this is our first episode , I wanted to start by sharing a little bit of my story why I wanted to be a nurse and why I wanted to start this podcast .

I think people go into nursing for all different kinds of reasons , but there is almost always a very strong why behind why somebody wants to be a nurse , and I think , especially in nursing school , it is such a crucial and important thing to identify your why . Why do you want to be here ?

Because that will keep you going on your toughest days , through your toughest experiences . Having a very strong why is key to success in nursing school . So for me , where do I even start ? I have wanted to be a nurse since I was 19 when something happened to me . I was hospitalized . I was in college .

I was hospitalized for an infection that went septic , which means it went into my bloodstream and it started spreading to my organs , which started shutting down , and I fought for my life . I was in the hospital for almost two weeks and it was touch and go for a while and being in the hospital . For those of you who have experienced it or know somebody .

It's a tough place to be .

It is exhausting and when you are in the worst point of your life , when you are at your very worst and you're being poked and prodded and you're not sleeping , it's very tough and at a certain point I was a very positive young person but I was extremely weak and I wouldn't say I give up , but my will was very weak , I was not strong .

And it was a moment with a nurse that literally changed my life . She came to me , she handed me a single bar of soap and a bottle of baby shampoo and she said let's make you feel like a human again and I'm tearing up just saying it because that moment it literally saved my life . She got me into the shower , which sounds like nothing .

It sounds like something you do every day when you're in an extremely vulnerable and weak state and somebody says let's make you feel like a human again and puts you into the shower . It was a transformational experience . The shower . It was literally the shower that saved my life . I became stronger , I decided to fight , I decided to .

It brought me back to life . I felt like a human , like the nurse said , but I felt rejuvenated , I felt transformed . I felt a new sense of survivorship . I felt like a survivor . It was amazing what happened in the days following . I started to turn around , the antibiotic suddenly started working and I became stronger .

The doctors were blown away and I was released within a few days . It just goes to show that one small gesture from anybody in this case it was from a nurse that can have such an impact . It can literally save your life . It can change the direction of your life . That moment for me said wow , I could do this . I want to do this with my life .

I want to connect with patients and give them that will to fight in the same way that that nurse did for me . That moment changed my life and it was the spark that said I could absolutely see myself doing this . I want to be a source of strength and will to survive for my patients , the same way that nurse was for me .

If I hadn't met that nurse , I don't know where I would be today . Maybe I would still be a nurse , maybe . But that was the moment that changed everything for me . That's why I want to be a nurse . Life happened . It took me a very long time to get to nursing school . At the time I was in college , I was doing other things .

I was young , I was very young and I did not pursue nursing until a little bit later in life . For me , that's my path , that's what worked for me , because I realized how much I wanted it when I started nursing school . I wanted to be there so badly . I was so grateful to be there . Failure was not an option .

I knew because in the first week of nursing school especially , I was in an accelerated program . You're a deer in headlights . There's so much thrown at you in that first week and you see the road in front of you and it seems so long . You wonder how you're ever going to get there . But I knew I had to .

I knew I had to get there because there was no other choice , because I had such a strong why . I started changing my daily habits slowly and things started working and things started clicking for me . I started to practice daily consistent habits and I started noticing changes . There was an ease and a joy .

And it is not to say that nursing school is easy , because nursing school is hard . Nursing school is the hardest thing I've ever done and I've given birth twice and that is no joke . Nursing school is very , very hard . You have to live and breathe the material every single day and you have to be consistent .

There is no such thing as cramming the night before for an exam , memorizing a list and hoping for the best .

You have to know , it has to be part of you and one of the best ways that you can practice consistency , one of the best ways to be consistent is to do practice questions every single day , the minimum of 10 , I call them your daily 10 , because the act of drilling these practice questions , it's like you're a marathon runner .

What does a marathon runner do Every day ? They train , they put on their sneakers and they run . They are in training for the big race . So when the day of the race arrives , it's not this big shock to the system , because they've put their body through it already . It's in their muscle memory . So , drilling these practice questions , it's the same thing .

You are training your body , you are training your nursing school mind into this muscle memory state . So when you get to the day of the big race , the big exam you've been there before , it's nothing , you are excited about it , you're revved up for the big race and it comes so much easier .

Consistency is one of the habits , and I have developed seven habits to success in nursing school and throughout this podcast we will explore all of the seven habits and so much more .

Some of the episodes will be just you and me and we'll talk about a specific topic , and sometimes we'll have guests and we have some incredible guests lined up in the coming weeks and months .

They're all working professionals and they are here to share their story , their experiences , what they think it takes to be successful in nursing school , and to give you a taste of what's possible , what's out there , because nursing is one of those very special careers where the opportunities are endless .

There are so many things you can do as a nurse and we will meet so many different types of nurses with different backgrounds , different experiences , and they have different pieces of advice to offer . They have different things that worked for them and it's the same with me .

I have these seven habits and within the seven habits there's multiple different things and hacks and tips and strategies . I have all these things that worked for me and a lot of them will work for you . Some of them won't . Some of them you can try on and say , yeah , you know what I developed my own thing . That's great . We are all in this together .

I am here for you and I'm here to tell you that nursing school is hard . Nursing school is by far the hardest thing I've ever done . But if you want this , if you have a strong Y that's driving you , you can do this . You can do anything . Once you untap that Y , you will soar .

Once you know your Y , the how will reveal itself , because there is no other option . There is no other option but to be a nurse , because you are a nurse . That's who you are . It's in your soul , it's in your blood . This is who you're meant to be . So there's no other way .
