The first round of President Trump’s tariffs went into effect today, with a ten percent baseline tariff applied to all imports, regardless of origin. This is compared to the current average tariff of about two and a half percent. The measure affects the approximately three trillion dollars in foreign goods the U.S. imports annually.
Protests erupted across the U.S. today, with crowds rallying at the National Mall in D.C. and other locations against the Trump administration’s actions. Organizers of the so-called “Hands Off!” rallies are demanding an end to billionaire influence, cuts to federal programs, and attacks on immigrants and other groups.
