not ARTIFICIALLY Sweetened - Episode 7 with Imraan Bismilla
Episode description
Welcome to 'not ARTIFICIALLY Sweetened'! Episode 7
If you are a person living with diabetes or a health professional that facilitates diabetes care, you are in the right place!
Join us on our journey, as we grow together in understanding, insight, and self-awareness and ultimately change lives for the better!
Our deliberations will always be honest, challenging and thought provoking. Nothing is off the table as we discuss real people, their real issues and stories, and together discover real answers to many vexing practical issues in diabetes and its care.
This week, Stan and Michael, welcome our studio guest, diabetes specialist pharmacist and person living with diabetes, Imraan Bismilla:
- we explore how Imraan balances his profession as a busy pharmacist with his diabetes self-care responsibilities and anxieties, particularly during the Holy Month of Ramadan
- Imraan shares some great practical tips and insights, including his use of continuous glucose monitoring as an ‘enabler’ to achieve a safe and successful fast
- What about ‘breaking the fast’ to prevent avoidable emergencies? “Don’t ‘tough it out’ – do what’s right for your body and make the adult choice to catch up that part of the fast later”.
- Imraan discusses the importance of the pharmacist as the most accessible member of the wider diabetes care team and the wise use of each ‘therapeutic moment’ inherent in the collection of monthly chronic medications
We also
- Share another Sweet Life Advocacy Message – "Here’s what people with diabetes wish their diabetes care team knew – Sometimes life gets in the way of our diabetes care!”
- Introduce the fifth in a series of ‘Essential Tools for your journey in Diabetes Care’ – Mindfulness
- Remind about our listener polls and questions and we discuss some of our recent responses
- Provide a preliminary response to Mary’s email questions on why certain new products are not available in South Africa. We will expand on this response in the episodes ahead
