Episode description

We discuss the devastating loss of State Police Officer Justin Hare, whose end of watch came much too soon. Jeremy Vaughn, a former State Police Officer who narrowly escaped a similar fate, joins us to share his survival story and provides an unfiltered glimpse into the real dangers faced by those who protect and serve. Our discussion ventures into the sobering truths behind the violence against law enforcement and the urgent need for legislative reform to safeguard these brave men and women.

Amid the heartfelt tributes and social media posts following such losses, actions speak louder than words. The conversation takes a critical stance on the disparity between public condolences from political leaders and their actual policy initiatives. We dissect the impact of media bias, political manipulation, and how the misrepresentation of statements, like those from former President Trump, can warp public understanding and debate. The vital importance of an informed electorate emerges as a central theme when considering the implications of political rhetoric and actual changes on the ground.

As we navigate these heavy topics, the podcast also looks ahead at the looming elections and their potential to shift the political landscape. Speculation surrounds the future of political leadership, as we ponder President Biden's re-election prospects and President Trump's chances, against the backdrop of pressing issues such as border security and the economic burden on American families. This episode is a call to action, a reminder of the gravity of choices at the ballot box and the policies that shape the fabric of our society. Join us for a conversation that promises not just to inform, but to move you to engage with the challenges we face as a community.

Police Officer Killed in Line of Duty

Speaker 1

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right . Well , I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right . There's only an up or down . This is the no Doubt About it . Podcast . No doubt about it Now your hosts , Kristy and Mark Runcetti . Wildfire , you can't care less now .

Speaker 3

Ok , we're doing a special Sunday episode this week Because of some breaking news we're getting in about a local case . We're going to get into that in just a minute , but it was worthy of us launching this out a day earlier and kind of getting on this a little bit sooner .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we're releasing this one a little bit early . We'll see how long it takes to get it all set .

But yeah , we're here to talk a little bit about what happened with the State Police Officer , justin Hare , who was who was killed in the line of duty on Friday in a heart breaking story which will have details on this hero and what's going on with the case . Breaking news on this . The person who killed Officer Hare has been arrested .

We'll get into all the details on that and as part of that , I wanted to bring in Jeremy Vaughn , who was a State Police Officer two years ago when he pulled over someone in these mountains and he ended up on a high speed chase and that person shot Jeremy Vaughn in the neck . By the grace of God , jeremy Vaughn survived .

He has a unique perspective on this . We recorded the interview with him a day ago , so it was before everything had kind of shaken out as far as catching the person who did this , but we still think it's really instructive and should be really interesting .

Speaker 3

He's got a lot of insight just on the safety measures that we need to be looking at for state patrol and police in general , just because it has gotten rampant and coming across something that you think might be an innocent situation as a patrol officer and it turns , you know , unfortunately , violent and sometimes deadly , which has been our case , but we have also

a lot of other national news . We're going to get to as well , some craziness coming out about the Trump campaign . It's really disheartening when you see such measures being taken to put out stuff that's just blatantly not taken out of context and just completely made into it and it's taken over .

Speaker 2

I think social media today , and that is this talk of today being Sunday , this talk of Trump calling for a bloodbath and it is . It's so disingenuous and so ridiculous that we're going to get into that Talk about the Lobos a little bit and what they did . So we're going to have a variety of these things , but we're going to get right into this story .

Speaker 3

First , really fast though baby . Yeah , no green on you . I'm a little disappointed . You're married to a 100% Irish girl .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you know , it's never been a big priority for me , I know .

Speaker 3

St Patties is not , is lost on you a little bit , it is , it is you Italian guy , you know . Yeah , no , I mean where's Ira ?

Speaker 2

You know , why do we have St Patties Day and why don't we have Luigi's Day , like , why do we not get something as Italians ?

Speaker 3

I don't know , I maybe you didn't fight hard enough to get it . I'm not really sure .

Speaker 2

Well no , I think that's probably a pretty fair point . And we were busy cooking all the meals for everybody , oh , okay , and then all of a sudden , you guys , what did you guys ever cook ? I mean my goodness cabbage .

Speaker 3

We bring in some solid , you know beer .

Speaker 2

Beer .

Speaker 3

Okay , yeah , okay .

Speaker 2

Okay .

Speaker 1

Well that's the truth , holy cow . Anyway , all right .

Speaker 2

Okay , yeah , let's get to it here , and we want to lay out exactly what happened with this story . It started on Friday , just terrible , and the tragic results were the death of a state police officer the second time in what three years that we've lost a state police officer .

And everything started to come out on Friday , and initially what happened was you saw a picture from what looked like either a lapel cam of sorts .

When you saw , you know , a suspect , couldn't , didn't exactly know who it was , but throughout the day on Friday and into Saturday , jeremy Smith was the person who began to emerge as the likely person that was involved in this situation was just outside a toucan carry , and so , because of those pictures , state police started to go out and look around .

We want to give you an idea of basically what happened here , and so Jeremy Smith is somebody who has some history in Albuquerque .

If you go back about a month ago , apd put out some pictures that they had of Jeremy Smith when they contacted him here he is right here and so APD had some awareness of who he was , but it turns out he , in the interim time over the past month , he ended up back in South Carolina , right , right , and so this all started to unfold on Friday and what we

learned was a first responder in South Carolina was missing and she was called in missing on Thursday and it turns out that she ended up . They ended up locating her body coming up during the day . It was either on Saturday . It looks like they found her body and her name is Phoenicia Machado IV . Her body was found in Dillon County in South Carolina .

Speaker 3

Right .

Speaker 2

Her car was missing , okay , and so they found her and then , all of a sudden , that car was located in New Mexico on Friday . So that was the car that it looks like Smith used to drive across the country . So I want to give you an idea how this shakes out .

Midnight Ambush

We're at early Friday morning , 5 am , and Justin Hare is called out to a disabled vehicle , a white BMW . He pulls up behind the BMW and it looks like there's a flat tire on the BMW . You can see the video right there .

With a flat tire on that BMW he pulls up and then , apparently , according to everything we know at this point , smith walks up to the passenger side window of Officer Hare's unit .

They roll it down , they have a brief conversation and then Smith shoots Officer Hare for absolutely no reason , turns around to the driver's side , shoots Officer Hare again , pushes him into the passenger side , then Smith gets into the patrol unit and takes off . So both of them are in the car .

At some point Smith dumps Officer Hare's body somewhere along the on the side of the road , keeps driving . Eventually he dumps the patrol unit as well . So then more state police come and they respond to the scene . They find Officer Hare . They rush him to the hospital and tragically he dies . And Smith , jeremy Smith is on the run . So this starts Friday .

All day Saturday he remains on the run . There were a couple of reports that there was some back and forth gunfire in Santa Rosa . That turned out to be false and wasn't true .

And then eventually , early this morning , a gas station attendant on the west side of Albuquerque sees someone who matches his description , thankfully , calls the police and they catch Jeremy Smith . After some gunfire , jeremy Smith was shot . He is at the hospital now and he will face a slew of charges .

Speaker 3

As he should .

Speaker 2

Yeah For cold murder , cold blooded murder . Probably two different murders on two different sides of the country . Really heartbreaking what this guy did .

Speaker 3

Right and Officer Hare , 35 years old young guy , father of young children .

Speaker 2

Two kids , I think with a third on the way , yeah .

Speaker 3

Just heartbreaking . Just once again it's infuriating because we have and I understand , I recognize that this Smith is not . We don't believe he's from this area , but we don't really know . But we do know he is a criminal past .

Oh , the revolving door of criminals back on the street , whether it's here in New Mexico or in other states , that are allowed to basically free reign after they commit crimes . It's a part of our frustration . We just got out of a legislative session where several crime bills were brought up to keep criminals , to have stricter penalties on violent criminals .

They didn't get past anything . They were . I don't think they got past committee , I don't really remember . Yeah , yeah , so the biggest ones .

Speaker 2

They never get past committee and we can get into that in one second . But you're exactly right on the criminal history . Look at this criminal history on Jeremy Smith here , and this comes from , actually from South Carolina , where they talk about everything you did . He escaped from prison in 2014 . Yeah , this is just crazy .

He has charges dating back to 2013 for just charging a firearm into a vehicle , pointing and presenting firearms to a person . I mean , this is , I mean , there's all kinds of stuff with this guy and so again , another one of these people that ends up on the streets .

And this gets to a broader and a bigger issue , and I think the real issue here is we have a large group of people , especially in the state of New Mexico but across the country , that do not believe in putting people behind bars , and it's not the majority of people in New Mexico .

There are plenty of people on both sides of the aisle who fully realize we have soft laws and those laws never end up doing what they should do to keep people safe . So we need to toughen up our laws and you mentioned it in the last legislative session the most powerful tools that we could have given prosecutors , police officers .

Tougher laws were killed in committee . It happens every single year here and you have a cadre of people in the legislature who won't enforce the law , and then you have people on both sides of the aisle who will , but they can't stop it . They can't stop them from killing the bills .

So here's one of the things that we talk about all the time , and we talked about it before . This is not brilliant what I'm about to say . Okay , it's pretty simple . We have a three strikes law in New Mexico , but it only includes a very few number of offenses , so it's never actually been used on anyone . Broaden the three strikes law .

Take people who violate the three strikes law and put them in prison Period . It's that simple . But if you introduce a tougher three strikes law in this legislature , it will immediately get killed , and when we constantly release people back out on the street , you make this an incredibly dangerous state . We are the second most dangerous state in the country .

So stop with all of this . We have to begin to realize that if we don't come together and hold these legislators accountable and say past laws to protect the people of this state , we continue to put our law enforcement at risk and every family at risk who now lives in a state that is increasingly dangerous .

Speaker 3

Right , and I mean just so everybody's aware , every single one of these legislators are up for reelection this November . I highly advise you to research your representatives . See how they've been voting on these issues . Are they voting these criminal bills down ? Are they responsible for us not being safer than we need to be as safe as we need to be ?

If so , do not reelect these leaders . I don't understand why we keep putting these same people in office that , increasingly , are putting us and our families and our police officers and our first responders in danger . It is a repetitive pattern . We know that it's happening . We see the revolving doors . We see it with judges .

We see it with state legislators who won't go to bat . See the ones that do , though . Check out the ones who are trying to put up those crime bills , those ones , those folks who are trying to fight for our safety and make sure those folks get reelected . And it's not that difficult to find out .

You can go on several websites and find out how your state legislature is voting on these issues . It's . I'm done with the party politics . We've talked about it at NAZI , and Mark tells us all the time drop your jersey , get it off and figure out what's best for our state .

It's not about being a Republican , it's not about being a Democrat , it's about being safe in our state . And enough is enough . So this November we charge every single voter out there , get informed , get involved and get your vote out .

Speaker 2

It's absolutely dead on and I think two to three weeks ago we saw an editorial in the journal where we had a group of legislators the people who stand in the way of all these things . They wrote an editorial saying we did so much to fight crime , we're gonna stop these root causes .

Whenever you have a legislator say we're gonna get to the root cause , that means I'm not gonna solve the problem and I'm gonna try to find another way to continue to let people out of jail Across the country we've seen this . It's that soft on crime approach that you don't have to let people serve their time . You can somehow let them out of it .

Speaker 3

You somehow think they're gonna be rehabilitated after a short time and behind bars and in data shows and research shows and example show that's not working . That's not working . Actually , if you're a criminal , and you're a violent criminal , stay behind bars .

Speaker 2

Yeah , well , I have a crazy thought . You can't arrest your way out of this problem . It turns out it's crazy . You can take the violent criminals off the streets and put them in jail . I mean , that's exactly what you can do . So look , it's frustrating for us . We are thoughts , prayers and hopes for Justin Harris . Officer .

Harris Family go out because he is a hero . And yet another situation where we have an ambushed police officer . So we'll talk to Jeremy Vaughn about this in just a second , because he has that unique perspective .

He wasn't quite ambushed like some other situations we've seen , but he was in a very difficult situation as well , so we wanna get to him and talk about what he's doing . Then after that , we'll get to some other issues as well . So we'll be back with Jeremy Vaughn right after this .

Police Officer's Encounter With Armed Perpetrator

Speaker 1

You're listening to the no Doubt About it podcast . Back to your hosts , Christy and Mark Ronchetti .

Speaker 2

Okay , again , this is the show you don't wanna have to do , but we are doing this and we wanna bring in somebody who has a very unique perspective in all of this , and it is Jeremy Vaughn , who is and was was a state police officer for more than a decade serving the state of New Mexico .

And I wanna tell a little bit about Jeremy Vaughn's story before we get to Jeremy , because he's gonna talk to us about what it is like to be in that type of situation that , unfortunately , justin Hare was in a couple of days ago and ended up giving his life for .

So , for those of you who do not remember the story , the Jeremy Vaughn story breaks down like this goes back to February , early February of 2022 , jeremy goes and is called to a gas station in the East mountains . He goes up to a car , knocks on the window and asks them what's going on . There were reports of people were doing drugs in this gas station .

That car backs right into Jeremy Vaughn's car . His unit is patrol unit for the state police .

All of a sudden , he ends up on a high speed chase with someone by the name of Jacob Elidge , and you can see Elidge turn on to a side road in a Cadillac and Vaughn basically does a pit maneuver and knocks him off to the side and all of a sudden , elidge starts shooting at Jeremy , vaughn , hits him in the neck and , by the way , if you've seen this

video , it's unbelievable because , jeremy , you not only remain calm , you continue to help out other responding officers as Elidge runs away . You have a neck wound from a bullet and then eventually they catch Elidge . You obviously go through a long recovery and are now back feeling good again .

I'm sure never quite the same from this , but the reason I wanted to bring you in is because of your experience , not only as a state police officer , but obviously in a situation where someone pulls the gun on you . So , jeremy , thanks very much for taking the time to talk to us .

Speaker 6

You're welcome . Thank you , guys , for having me .

Speaker 2

Oh , okay . So when you heard what happened here and you saw what happened with this shooting with Justin Hare , what was your first of all , what thought went through your mind ?

Speaker 6

Well , this is really tough and we want to be very respectful to the family . Our canals go out to them .

We want to acknowledge immediately that this is a very different case than what I dealt with , and that really starts and stops with the fact that I went home to my wife and family and this young man did not , and so we really want to be respectful to them and realize that this is not the same situation that they are going through , and our hearts go out to

them . And also we want to respect the investigators and the investigation , in that they have the facts . They're probably sorting through a lot of information . Some of it will be good , some of it will be bad , and we're largely speculating from the outside based on what we're hearing and getting all of that information .

So we want to respect their investigation and realize that we're going to do our best to analyze this , but very far from the outside and with limited perspective . My initial thoughts are with their family and how horrific this is .

We will speculate and I'm going to speculate because we need to enact change and we need to do it while these thoughts are fresh in our minds .

I'm worried and concerned that this person has a criminal history , that they've engaged in violent behavior before , that they've crossed state lines , that they have a firearm and we're just going down that same narrative that we continue to see as law enforcement officers and dealing with people were .

It's difficult to prepare to deal with them because they're ready to take violent action and we are in a position where we're not expecting that . We know that stuff is coming in a general sense , but this is right here , right now it's really ugly . So those thoughts cross my mind .

Speaker 2

So talk to me a little bit about when you're early in the morning . 5 am is when this occurred and your state police officer called to help somebody with a flat tire , because that's what happened here .

When you hear that call out to your ear , is that one of those call outs where you say to yourself , okay , this could be an issue , or is that one of those where you say , I don't , you know this .

You know , obviously none of this usually results in this , but is this one of those situations that that peaks your kind of adrenaline , or is it one that you would expect to be somewhat more more of a garden variety ? Stop In normal patrol .

Speaker 6

when you hear white BMW , newer model , that's probably an older couple , you think side of the road with a flat tire . For some reason this person can't change a flat tire . Is it an older person ? Is it a person with a disability ? So this is pretty garden variety . We never want to have that mindset .

But day after day after day , changing tires , stopping for people out in Lord'sburg or Ratone or whatever , it's a normal routine call . And for me I agree with you , Mark , the word ambush comes to mind pretty quick . Yeah .

Speaker 3

And I think you know one thing that was unusual to me about this at least the facts I've heard so far is that this officer pulls up to help this guy with a flat tire not really understanding , still , exactly what he's coming up on and this perpetrator walks up to his car . Is that your understanding of what happened , and is that normal ?

Like you know , you don't see a lot of , I mean , I don't know . When you're driving a patrol car , you pull over . Do you see people coming out of the car and coming towards you ? Is that very common ?

Speaker 6

You know again from my heightened sense of caution that I gained again from the people that I worked with . It was above average because of those high speed groups that I was touching with and interacting with were very good . I'm much more on edge where I was in my department and my time in state police . I want to be on my feet and I want to be mobile .

Even a normal traffic stop it's very understandable that when you say white BMW flat tire middle of I-45 in the morning , it's very understandable that an officer might just pull up to this gentleman , a person that we can see and we feel like we can trust visually , to pull up next to him and say , hey , what do we need to do to get your tire changed ?

So I don't think either one of those is unreasonable . It's not the preferred choice , it's not what the training staff would want me to do , but it's understandable that that would happen .

Speaker 3

OK , ok , so not as unusual as what we hear . Initially on that . And then the other thing I think Mark and I have been talking . Some information that's come out lately is that they're like you said earlier he was . He did have a criminal past , is what it's looking like . We have a mugshot of him .

More details are coming in on this , but more recently we're seeing he could have a potential tie here in Albuquerque .

Speaker 2

Yeah , just before you get to that , jeremy , we'll show you at the Albuquerque Police Department what this flyer out and what they basically have . Here is a couple of pictures that look like they come from a lapel cam of Jeremy Smith here , and that's from the end of February .

So this initially started in South Carolina with the murder of the first responder in South Carolina and then ends up here . So , jeremy , what does this tell you , given that we have APD that has lapel cam shots of this guy from about a month ago ?

Speaker 6

That lapel camera could easily be a gas station . When you ask me these other questions about is it normal for this person to walk up , now that I know all these other factors , it's easy for the hair on the back of my neck to stand up when it's a normal day in Tucumcari and I'm going to get coffee and stopping for a white BMW .

That's a totally different mindset so I don't want to mix those two up . This gentleman traveling through an I-40 , that could be perfectly normal , getting gas , you know , moving a businessman doing business in California driving back to South Carolina . What was probably a little more concerning is the license plate . Does it match up to the vehicle ?

And I believe that's come out that those maybe didn't match . We'll see how that pans out , but that's a little more concerning . That would be something where the officer would have said , okay , hold on the license plate and the vehicle don't match . Now I'm concerned . It's not just a businessman , it's not just grandma traveling through , there's something more .

So the fact that he has ties to Albuquerque , that doesn't tell me a lot , but I think we're going to see more come out about that .

Speaker 2

Right , right and so , and also give us a sense , because this started in South Carolina , give us a sense of how that information travels , because you know , obviously a heartbreaking story . We have a first responder who was , you know , she was reported missing on Thursday and then all of a sudden by the way , her name is Phoenicia Machado 4 .

Her body was found in Dillon County in South Carolina on Friday evening here . So a heartbreaking story there . But then people I don't think always know , jeremy , exactly how information travels , because it's tough to know and to link these cases right , because they were so far from each other .

Speaker 6

Yeah , you saw the release from Marion County Sheriff's Office there in South Carolina . They obviously got that information from the Mexico State Police about the vehicle .

They obviously exchanged information and while you know my wife waiting for information , hoping State Police has information , hoping UNM hospital is ready for me when I'm injured , that seems very , very slow for my wife . What I'm reading here is light speed . These officers are moving so quickly .

They're making phone calls , they're putting pieces together and to me this sounds from the outside like these officers are just really knocking this case out at light speed . So there's really two perspectives on that . One is very slow . Nothing can bring officer hair back . The other side is they are building a case and they're moving and shaking very , very quickly .

Unfortunately for this young lady they weren't able to save her and get that crime stopped , and the same for this officer . So those two perspectives are really important . Going forward for prosecution .

Speaker 3

You know . Another question , jeremy , I have is just , it's a safety question , and I'm sure there's , you know , a lot of bells and whistles that they would have to jump through .

But are State Patrol officers , do they tend to always travel alone , or is there an option to have a partner with you , or do we just don't have enough officers to make that a reality ?

I just think maybe , you know , obviously I'm thinking two is better than one , because obviously somebody can be catching something that you know you may be driving and not be able to catch up on everything . So is it normal for our State Patrol officers to be riding alone , or is there going to be some sort of process ? You think ?

To add , you know a partner ?

Speaker 6

You know we had those discussions during my time in State Police . They're very brief discussions . New Mexico is using its resources the best that it can . We do have the New Mexico amount of patrol and I think they're in the ballpark area of about 80 officers . We have a huge , great deal of gratitude for them coming out and riding with their officers .

They're a volunteer agency and they do a lot of good backing us up , but the resources simply aren't there . That's a discussion we had .

We would love to have two officers in each car , but when you call my name and you call my number and say we want you to patrol Camado , new Mexico , and you're going to be out there in the dark by yourself , you know 60 , 70 minutes from backup my answer is okay , I'm going to 10-8 , let's go , and I think you'll find that's the answer of most officers

there . So that discussion is really probably not going to move up on the prerogative of the State anytime soon .

Speaker 2

Okay , so , and that makes some sense , obviously . To start off , really , what State Police does ? They're in all these rural areas .

I mean , they've got to cover massive amounts of ground and , jeremy , we've talked to you on this show before about the difficulty in recruitment now for police officers , especially with the State Police , so that all kind of can fold into this same bit of discussion here . I want to take you into a broader sense here .

Now , let's I want to take , I want to go back and , ava , this is Clip 8 . And we talk about your situation , jeremy , and then you know , officer Jarrett's situation outside of Deming . This is some video of that as we look back , and this will not be graphic , but it is still scary in the situation that

Law Enforcement Deaths and Ideological Challenges

you know . For those of you who don't remember , back to what happened , this was the last death for a New Mexico State police officer . Basically , he was just ambushed . He knew this guy , omar Queva , had a gun and he basically said I need you to come out and , and you know , hand me the gun . And a Queva didn't do that .

Clearly , he popped out of the car and started shooting , unfortunately with tragic results . This is a similar scenario here . So when you look at these two cases , these last two deaths of officers who are her heroes , no doubt about that .

They are different situations , there's no doubt , and there's a lot of stuff that was involved in the and the Jarrett shooting that that had it was much more . I think you know much more of an issue because because Officer Jarrett had no idea really what he was walking into , but some other agencies may have known .

So I don't want to get in necessarily to all that , but but where do you stand on looking at some of these things and thinking about how can we change things through the state police to protect officers more than what we're doing ? Or can there be some changes in philosophy or tactics going forward here ?

Speaker 6

Well , it's kind of both . I think you've got a gentleman who is engaged in criminal behavior and a young lady is deceased because of that and officer hair stumbled by means of a flat tire across this guy and that is is kind of a normal part of law enforcement , whether police officer killings are very high or whether they're very low .

So that's kind of normal and as a as a Christian man believing that the Jesus Christ is building his kingdom and under that we Christians are , we're kind of observers .

You're in politics it's a little different for you , mark , and we were glad you are but we're kind of observers and so I'm not going to carry water for the right and I'm certainly going to be critical of both . But the left really believes that people think the way that they do .

The only enemy to the political left is the political right , and when , when they control the media , when they control policy , they control national politics , they believe that those criminals think and will act the way that they do and the way that they believe that they will , and they're simply not going to .

We will never control crime when we believe we can let criminals out of jail , when we can put them on an ankle bracelet and they won't go into Edgewood , new Mexico , and shoot a state police , look at it . And that once we let them out , they're going to behave as productive citizens of the left . And that's just not the case .

And that's going to be the case with immigration as well . So the New Mexico State Police needs our politicians to be confronted with that truth and to really understand you have got to get a grip on crime . The other ideology is that men are bad , that masculinity is bad , and I live with my wife . She's an FBI agent . I am a masculine man .

I have two sons , one's disabled . My masculinity is not a bad thing . It will protect you if it must , and I can carry a gun and I can shoot back if I need to .

So we really need to be confronted with how bad society will be without masculinity , how bad society will be if we believe criminals are basically good people and will come out of prison and be good . They're not going to be . So the state police needs that ideological change to support them . The New Mexico State Police is a masculine job .

It's for tough people , it's for people who eat nails and the women that do it . They drive in a patrol unit by themselves . They go to CrossFit , they go to the gym , they work out , they shoot guns , they have biceps and if they need to hurt somebody , they will hurt somebody . That's a good thing , and we need those things back .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and you know what ? Let's talk about some numbers , because you sent me some information over before we were talking today and I want to go through two quick slides , jeremy , and then I'll let you respond . First of all , officer deaths across the nation , actually in 2023 , this number was encouraging .

They were down 39% , which is in the line of duty deaths . That's very , very good news . So I kind of saw that was like wow , this is really good . And then the next slide and the information that you sent was this one , and it is officer deaths by decade . And boy , the numbers have skyrocketed .

So if you take a wider view of all of this and you go by decade , you see , and if you're listening to this , basically you're seeing the average law enforcement fatalities have risen significantly since the year 2000 to 2023 up to 359 .

So I was wondering if you could just talk to us a little bit about the interaction , especially with people , like the particular situation with Jeremy Smith , someone who has a long criminal history here , and a lot of these people .

Now , at least for us from the outside , it feels like they are emboldened to go after law enforcement when they get into a tight spot , and the numbers reflect that .

Speaker 6

It's the same thing . As a Christian , we sit back and we watch these two political parties working out and , yes , one of those political parties benefits us more but we're really seeing their ideology undercut us . They attack law enforcement and unfortunately , the right has done that with the FBI .

I think that law enforcement agencies , to some degree , have earned some of that . We've had some misbehavior .

We've had some misbehavior at the federal level , so we've earned some of that , but really an attack on law enforcement and really we as Americans run to broad philosophies very quickly rather than actually dealing with individual problems and data , and so we've empowered criminals , we've emboldened criminals with our ideologies , and our ideologies are mistaken .

Men are not bad . Masculinity is not bad . When we abuse those things , they're definitely bad , and I think we're in the middle of a psychological warfare and I think we're losing because people are buying into the things that are dividing us as a country . Men are bad . Many of these other things that are going on .

Speaker 2

More the turnaround right , the thought process that someone who has a long criminal history shouldn't do a great deal of time behind bars , because we can rehabilitate them and turn them right back out .

Speaker 6

Very difficult to make that argument . The same with methamphetamine addiction or any of the other addictions very difficult to overcome and an ideology and a belief system that simply throws out , without good research and data that they can recover , is going to harm us . It's gonna cause a lot of harm and we have to recover from that .

Speaker 3

I'm just curious . I know you are , you know you're not on the streets anymore . I understand that part of it , but what do you think the overall feeling is from the state ? Like the New Mexico State police officers right now , do you think that they feel a sense of heightened awareness on that ?

The crime is just completely going out of control in some ways , or do you feel like they're like this is my job , I take great pride in this and you know we're going to be able to . I got to go out there every single day and do my job regardless . What do you think that you're all like feeling is ?

Speaker 6

Sure , it seems to me the point of view is important . I think down at the Albuquerque Police Department or if you are watching the news , where the news is able to cast light on a lot of this stuff , it's really disheartening .

I sense that in the New Mexico State Police , where you're down in Lord's Bird , you're down in Jal , you're in Roswell , you're in Farmington , that you're feeling pretty good about the job you do . I think the state police guys are .

I think men in America , men in New Mexico , men in law enforcement , men in the military , are really discouraged from being men and little boys are being raised , kids are being raised , college kids are being raised to fear and not want to be men .

And I think that's a real problem , because the New Mexico State Police and I'm not speaking for women , I'll let the ladies speak for themselves , because there's some tough ladies out there . They're there eating nails , right along with the men . But we need men to be men and our ideology in this country is just hammering men . Shame on you for being a man .

I don't buy it . We're going to need men to stand up . We're going to need them to eat some nails and be tough , and that's really hurting us . So I think when you watch Albuquerque news , it's pretty disheartening .

When you're patrolling out in capturing County , I think you're feeling pretty good about the job that you do to bring criminals to jail and put them in jail . I would like to see the court's philosophy turn around and start incarcerating people . I get it . It's difficult . You will have innocent people put in prison . That's really hard . We need to work on that .

But we've got to put criminals away and the ankle bracelet is not working .

Speaker 2

Yeah , absolutely , and you saw that firsthand , because I , who shot you , decided that he was going to cut off his ankle bracelet , did it and then did this . So this soft on crime approach is one that is is failed .

The state of New Mexico , we know that and again , as you've even said , this , not a put , should not be a political issue in any way , shape or form , but unfortunately right now we're looking at some major league issues . We'll continue to stay on top of this . Jeremy , thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us . We always love catching up with you .

By the way , just one more quick thing for you Anything else that that you're watching in this story that you think we need to be paying attention to , as of you know , say , late Saturday , early Sunday morning .

Speaker 6

I'm wondering if there's another person involved . You know the , statistically speaking , probably a male . I'm wondering if there's another male involved . I'd love to see the state please pick them up . Also , the governor and the chief both mentioned additional injuries . I don't know what those were .

We're praying for whoever got hurt and hope they come to a resolution and a healing , and we just pray for these officers and we appreciate you guys shedding light on this whole scenario .

Speaker 2

Absolutely , and we always pray for you guys that are in the line of fire . Thank you for what you've done , thank you , god bless you and your family and , of course , we'll stay in touch with you as we move forward

Media Bias and Political Manipulation

. Jeremy Vaughn , thanks very much , we appreciate it , you're listening to the no Doubt .

Speaker 1

About it podcast . Back to your hosts , Christy and Mark Ronchetti .

Speaker 2

All right .

Speaker 3

Very insightful .

You know one thing I want to add on that and he hits it as well in that interview , for sure but realistically , I think what's frustrating for a lot of us who are on Twitter is we see some of our state leaders saying how sorry they are for the families of these slain officers , our hearts and condolences and our prayers going out for these families , which ,

of course , that is absolutely true . The problem I have with those posts are you have the ability now to change laws and to make things , not even change laws , just actually enforce the laws we actually do have , but you have to expand them .

Speaker 2

Well , fine , but get them through , get them through , get them through .

Speaker 3

So , instead of just saying hey , my heart's in prayers and blah , blah , blah , blah , blah blah , how about this next session ? Whoever's in the next session , how about we actually , in the name of some of these slain officers , we actually put some of these laws into place ? That would be more impressive than your thoughts and prayers on Twitter .

Speaker 2

Well , no , and it's absolutely true , and it's one of the things we talked about in the campaign is one simple thing you could do right away is toughen the three strikes . Law California and we love California , right . And we love to do everything .

Speaker 3

California does Heaven forbid , let's do it . Guess who ?

Speaker 2

has a tough three strikes law . California does .

Speaker 3

Right . It's why criminals are flying over here , because we don't .

Speaker 2

That's exactly right . It's why a lot of the cartel issues have come here from California , because these guys know for a fact they can do whatever they want . So if we're going to copy California on things like a clean fuel standard and EVs , well then let's copy them on this crime issue and get a tough three strikes law . What a crazy thing to do .

But when it comes to actually holding people accountable , well then we'll let California go their own way . Ridiculous .

Speaker 3

Yeah , absolutely Speaking of ridiculous , we got some national stuff happening that is insane . It feels like you take something out of context that somebody says I don't care what party you're from . You start taking stuff out of context and making a huge news story out of it to slant something . It's wrong . However , you want to do it it's dead wrong .

Speaker 2

OK . So what we're talking about this morning is you get up this morning and you , if you look , let's just grab the Ava , can we grab the dredger port ? Let's put the dredger port headline up A picture of Trump shaded in red to make him look completely red . And it says Trump warns blood bath if he's not elected . I mean this is crazy .

So , ok , is this really true ? So then you go and look at some other sources and NBC News . Trump says there will be a blood bath if he loses . Cbs News in Ohio rally . Trump says there'll be a blood bath . The Rolling Stone or Rolling Stone magazine which is incredibly disingenuous too but whatever Trump says , there'll be a blood bath .

So all of a sudden , if you're just looking at these news headlines , you're thinking to yourself well , trump clearly threatened bloodshed . Yes , he called something . Yeah , he absolutely did , Until you go and actually listen to what he said . Ok , so yesterday in Ohio , here is the blood bath comment in context and we'll let you determine what he meant .

Speaker 4

The Mexico has taken . Over a period of 30 years , 34% of the automobile manufacturing business in our country Think of it went to Mexico . China now is building a couple of massive plants where they're going to build the cars in Mexico and think they think that they're going to sell those cars into the United States with no tax at the border .

Let me tell you something to China , if you're listening , president Xi and you and I are friends , but he understands the way I deal those big monster car manufacturing plants that you're building in Mexico right now and you think you're going to get that . You're going to not hire Americans and you're going to sell the cars to us . Now .

We're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line and you're not going to be able to sell those cars . If I get elected now , if I don't get elected , it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole . That's going to be the least of it . It's going to be a bloodbath for the country . That'll be the least of it .

But they're not going to sell those cars .

Speaker 3

Right , I mean , let's take it out of context everybody and duck and act like he's ensuing violence . Which is what ?

Speaker 2

OK , so can we go to this .

Speaker 3

Biden-Harris campaign statement Well in one second .

Speaker 2

But yeah , and so what you did there is . What a lot of these guys did is they took the shorter clip , Says if I'm not elected , you know , it's going to be a bloodbath , Like he's ensuing violence . You hear . It's completely disingenuous and this is what we talk about with the media . They are absolute liars and things like this .

This is why you have the power of Trump that you do , because so many people see this and go . That's not true , right ? That's not what he said . That's not what he meant . He was talking about the auto industry and he's completely within context . This makes sense .

So to go and turn this into something else shows you one thing it shows you that you have a campaign on the other side , that they have to , and you can see the battle lines being drawn . The battle lines are very clear here . It's going to be Trump talking about the economy , talking about the border , talking about family budgets all the way through , right .

And it's Biden talking about Trump and demagoguing him , even when it isn't true , instead of talking about the policy yeah , instead of actually saying listen , this is what we would do if we were elected . Blah , blah , blah blah , they are elected . They've blown the whole thing apart , exactly , so here's OK .

Speaker 3

So here's the Biden-Harris campaign statement on Trump promising quote blood bath if he loses . Tonight , donald Trump said that there would be a blood bath if he wasn't elected and that if he lost , there would be no more elections . What Number one . He didn't say that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I don't even know where that comes from .

Speaker 3

I mean , is that just a made up thing from Joe Biden ?

Speaker 2

I don't know .

Speaker 3

OK , then , after opening the general election by meeting with authoritarian leaders and rallying alongside conspiracy theorists , donald Trump continues to praise dictators , promise to pardon political violence and launch this gets me . And launch racist attacks against black and brown Americans . Give me a break .

Speaker 2

That's a lie too . That's just a blatant lie .

Speaker 3

Ok , so I mean it goes on and says that they're basically going to . You know , trump is doubling down on his threats of political violence . He wants another January 6th . Blah , blah , blah , blah , blah . Give , really Give me a break on that .

Speaker 2

Well , no . So this shows you where the lines are . This is very clear now . It's policy versus person , right ? So everything that happens with Trump , trump will you know there'll be no more elections . Trump will make sure that he takes over in perpetuity . Trump says there's going to be a bloodbath .

Like , you have all of these things , every single one of them , that you look at . And then you look at your own life and you look at what's happening with the economy , you look what's happening with the border , you look what's happening in wars overseas and all of a sudden you realize Joe Biden's only pathway forward here is to demagogue Trump .

And sometimes Trump does it to himself and says stuff that you're like oh my gosh , what is he talking about ? But in a case like this , it's completely fabricated saying that he called for a bloodbath when he didn't . Ok , clearly . So this shows you where we are in this race and in fact , as all of the information comes in , it's very coordinated .

So this morning , sunday morning , nancy Pelosi came on to CNN and of course , she had the talking points ready to go .

Speaker 5

Because he's even predicting a bloodbath . What does that mean ? He's going to exact a bloodbath . There's something wrong here . How Respectful I am of the American people and their goodness , but how much more do they have to see from him to understand that this isn't what our country is about ? Praising Hitler .

Speaker 2

What it just is I mean , it just is you just this is that this is the last throws of desperation . It really is . And believe me , look , I want this to be a race based on the issues . I want this to be because because the issues matter to actual families , they matter to us , like when you go to the grocery store and you're getting killed , that matters .

When you go to the gas pump and you're getting killed , that matters . When you've got crime that's out of control and you've got a border that's wide open , with some very dangerous stuff happening there which we'll get to in a second , that stuff matters .

So when you go in demagogue words , take them out of context and try to turn this into a race To the bottom , it , to me , is devastating for this country . It's so bad for this country I can't get over .

Speaker 3

It just breaks the faith in the process for a lot of people . I mean , we saw that personally . We witnessed that personally when MLG spent I don't know millions of dollars to tell everybody that mark hates women . I mean it was just , it's a lie .

It's like back up your policy , talk about policy issues , be a grown-up , stop acting like a child and making up stuff about the other person Like I . Just that's infuriating . That's one of my biggest issues with politics is that you get in there , fight fair , tell people what you're gonna do with your their leader .

Don't be name-calling the other person and saying stuff that's not true .

Speaker 2

Like it just it's just dumb , it's dumb and Trump has been in the middle of that himself .

Speaker 3

You know , saying you know , can we not just we're all sick of the divide ? Every I don't know a person on the planet that's not sick of the divide that's been happening in this country ? And the only way we're gonna get through that divide is if we start refocusing and reshifting our efforts on let's get back to where we need it . We're keeping people safe .

We're making food and groceries and utilities and rent and mortgage and college and everything else more affordable for families , right working families . Those are the issues that we should be arguing about . Yeah , okay , that's it .

Speaker 2

Well , and in here's why you're not seeing the Biden administration or the Biden campaign argue about him . Ava clip 17 the latest numbers are out on what's happening with inflation . So inflation is up 3.2 percent Year over year . So in other words , those huge jumps we had last year , in the year before we're still growing off of those .

Speaker 3

We're still like it didn't come back down .

Speaker 2

No , it's not come back .

Speaker 3

The realistic is it's not 3.2 percent . Let's be realistic . Well , that's true to .

Speaker 2

It is much higher and I'll get to that in a second . But consumer prices rose 3.2 percent in February from the year Earlier . Okay , the second straight month of firmer than expected inflation is likely to reinforce the central banks wait and see posture of cutting interest rates . So those interest rates if you want to get a loan , those are obviously very high .

For cars , repo rates for Kaiser cars are very , very high . All these things are headed in the direction of still a very difficult economy ahead .

In fact , we had Republicans put out a tweet yesterday talking about Bidinomics and what it looks like for families since he took over , and these are stark numbers and this is why the whole demagoguing of somebody saying something on the stump that has nothing to do with anything and is completely garbage .

Here's why they do that because food prices are up 21 percent , rent is up 19.4 percent , energy costs are up 35 percent , new car costs 19 percent , and here's one that Often kind of is lost in the shuffle car insurance costs up 45% . Yeah .

So when we actually talk about the issues , what does Joe Biden say about the economy and how we're doing the actual things that are important ?

Speaker 3

I'm sure he's telling the truth .

Speaker 7

So he already says Wages are rising faster than prices and now we have among the lowest inflation rates of any country in America and still we're still fighting a lowered even further , not true for fighting a lower

Border Security and Political Landscape

health care . I have cost education costs to give just a little more breathing room , as my dad would say yeah , well , your dad would also realize that we're looking at major problems here .

Speaker 3

Why don't we tell the truth ? I mean , I'm pretty sure that that is a standard parent thing that we try to teach our kids Is to tell the truth right he hasn't told the truth on so many things . I can't I . It's exhausting . I don't know how people don't realize it . I don't know how people don't see it .

Speaker 2

Well , no , well , I think they do see it and I think that's why Trump continues to lead . It's why you also see , after the State of the Union , there was no bump for Biden , even though the media tried to help him . Today , the media trying to help him , saying that Trump is Promising a bloodbath , they're doing everything they can .

So , again , I'll say this and I keep saying it , I'm gonna say it every show , because because I just I feel it that much , and that is that I don't care what party you're from , this should bug the heck out of you , because you should be like what are you doing for our families ? Where are we going with this ? Because it isn't just the economy .

They also don't want to face up to the border and there are some really scary developments that have happened there . New York Post Put out an article this morning About one of the people that was arrested at the border , and take a look at this .

Speaker 3

So that's , this is the headline from the post a legal migrant from Lebanon caught at border admitted he's a Hezbollah terrorist and hope to make a bomb in the US .

Speaker 2

Okay . So now , just so you know about Hezbollah , so they're in Lebanon . So when we talk about Israel and fighting Hamas , right that , that that's the Gaza Strip , okay , but to the north , of Israel is Hezbollah and Lebanon , they're another massive terrorist organization , okay , and so Israel's battling them as well . Mm-hmm .

So , in our support of Israel , makes us a target is which , hey look , I think we stand up as a country and support Israel and and we stand firmly on that and I think we should be proud of that , right so , but it does make us a target for these guys . So here's what the article says 11 . He's migrant who was caught sneaking over the border .

By the way , he was caught in El Paso , within a few miles here of New Mexico . By the way , he hoped to make a bomb . His destination was New York , the pope , the post can reveal . Basel Bessel Abdoni , 22 , was caught by Border Patrol on March 9th near El Paso .

While in custody , he was asked what he was going to do in the US , which he replied I was going to try to make a bomb . According to Border Patrol documents exclusively , exclusively , excuse me obtained by the post .

In a subsequent sworn interview , abdoni said he had trained with Hezbollah for seven years and Served as an active member guarding weapons locations for another four years , according to internal ice Documents , and he says his focused fit , focus of his training was jihad and killing people that were not Muslim .

Look at the video that we have , oh I , time after time after time , where we have people just flooding into the country who we don't know eight plus million people , and do you really believe there aren't hundreds more that want to do the same thing that this guy does ?

Speaker 3

right , I just it . And then I and when Joe , old Joe , reflex it back on to the Republicans , not passing this and not passing that , when he has every ability to shut this thing down Without any vote from Congress , he can shut this thing down . He won't do it .

Instead , he's still flying a legal migrants in by plane who also are creating havoc and and in doing Crimes . I mean we've , we've got another guy , a migrant we're not gonna talk about it today , but a migrant that's up in New York that that he flew in , that he raped a 15 year old disabled kid .

Yeah , I mean , we , we're seeing this , these cases over and over , and I just think , if you guys think that Joe Biden has our best interest when it comes to the border , watch what he said , what watches Actions , and not what he says and this is purely I mean .

Speaker 2

I think we're at a spot now and this is why I say I still don't believe it's going to be the nominee because I think this is going to continue to move forward over the next couple of months .

His numbers are not going to move and we're going to continue to see issues , and so I think he'll eventually be replaced and I think it's for the good of the country . You know , because I just think it's been so incompetent now and our elections have devolved into this food fight that is so beneath the American people .

It's beneath us as a country that this turns into what it's turned into . So it's going to be a nightmare and I think , ultimately , at the end of the day , I think that Trump has an incredible chance to win because of Biden's own policies and it sure looks like he's not looking to fix those .

Speaker 3

Well , you know , I hope that you know . I hope that what you're saying is true , mark , but honestly , I still have so many Democratic friends that still believe in Biden and hate Trump so much that they're going to just vote in Biden , right . And so we keep asking ourselves all the time , why would anybody do this ?

But it's the media that's pushing their agenda , and if that's the only media that you're reading and opening your minds to , well , that's exactly what their whole goal is is to tell you all the great things about Biden and all the bad things about Trump .

And instead , why can't we just talk straight up truth about what's going on with each case , in each guy , in each policies you know , and where they stand on the issues , so then you , as an American voter , regardless of party , can make the best decision for your family .

Speaker 2

Well , I also think and yeah , no , I totally agree with that , but I do think some of it is leaking in , right , because the numbers that Trump has got now are so much better than where they were for him in 2020 , at any point that I do think there's a middle part of the electorate that realizes we got a problem here .

Like you can't ignore that when it's a minimum $200 bill every time you go to the grocery store you can't you can't ignore that . You can't ignore and I worry more than anything else .

The biggest thing I worry about is the fact that I think we are living on borrowed time as far as an attack goes in this country because of our border policy and having no vetting process .

Because when we went down to El Paso , the very place where this terrorist was found , and we talked to Border Patrol directly the guys literally sitting at the computer looking at who these people are they said you would not believe who we're letting into this country .

And so , as we see that we have to know we have put the people of this country in tremendous danger and I hope we escape it without a terrorist attack . But you see cases like this where this guy gets into the country and he's a member of Hezbollah who says I'm here to I'm here to bomb . I'm here to build a bomb .

Here we go In the fact that we've escaped this long without a massive terrorist attack . Given what's going on with Israel , I just worry that this is one of those things that the American people have put in terrible danger because of incompetent leadership .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's just terrible . Anyway okay , let's end on a good note . Yeah , let's talk about something that I think most of I know people in Albuquerque are pretty fired up about . Yeah , I have some friends that actually go out to the Mountain West tournament all the time . They go out to Vegas every year . They get pretty fired up about this .

I actually we watched a lot of the games of the Lobos this past weekend and I will have to say I think the entire town of Albuquerque were in those stands . It was incredible , it was impressive , even the guy that was the sportscaster , that was talking about the audience .

I really think half of , I think all of Albuquerque has rolled into Vegas to support the Lobos ?

Speaker 2

No , they were . I mean Lobos had not won a Mountain . West tournament . I don't think since 2014 with Alford , and this is tremendous . I mean , even if you don't watch a lot of basketball , the Lobos are fun to watch . They have great guard play . Their guard play is incredible .

Speaker 3

Yeah , they're ball handling skills I can't even . I was shocked at how fast I mean they played my CSU Rams the other night and they did light up and see issues really good right now they're going to the tournament too . They're solid . They look like they were standing still , compared to the Lobos . So I had to say listen . Lobos deserve this .

Well played , really well done . They're so fun to watch . We love their games .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and Richard Petino has done a great job and he has . He came in here a couple years ago and said we're competing for championships and what do you know ? And he's doing it A couple years later they've got a Mountain West championship and they're going to the tournament . We'll see where they end up on seating .

Yeah , you know they were a bubble team going into this Like will they make the NCAAs , will they not really really close ? Not , obviously , they get an automatic bid having won the tournament , but beyond that , you know they were going anyway . But but then to see them celebrate after it was over , which is pretty cool , they were all jumping around .

Speaker 3

Everybody's going crazy . Oh yeah , tina's family . It's very cool , it's super fun . And you know , for those of you that don't live in New Mexico , like we don't have any professional teams really to get behind .

Speaker 2

This is our , this is our , yeah , these are our Dallas Cowboys .

Speaker 3

Yeah , these are our Dallas Cowboys , these are our Denver Broncos . This is what we get fired up about here in this state , and it's super fun when somebody can take a win , and I just it's super impressive . And now , everybody , if you're into March Madness which we are your brackets ready . We can pick those out on tomorrow , starting tomorrow , on Monday .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , the selection committee goes tonight . So , we should know pretty quickly and and we'll get that going .

Speaker 3

But I'm going to smoke mark in March Madness , as I usually do . So if you'd like to join us for that as well , let us know who you're going to pick to be in your final four .

Speaker 2

I got the Lobos going to the final four .

Speaker 3

Okay , good .

Speaker 2

I don't know , but I got them .

Speaker 3

I want to see who our viewers pick going into final four , and if you want to tell us who your championship is , your winner is , we'd love to know . I would love to keep . We love March Madness . I played basketball . It's really the only sport I even have a remote understanding of , so let's go and it is remote this is true .

I'm not claiming to be some expert , by any means . No , no , no , no , no , it's okay , it's a little fun .

Speaker 2

No , but thanks for joining us and we'll have another show for you on Thursday . Obviously some heavy topics today , but again keep officer hair's family ? Yeah , absolutely His wife and two kids and a third on the way . Yeah , please pray for them and they do have a GoFundMe account too .
