¶ Importance of Voting in Local Elections
You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right . Well , I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right . There's only an up or down . This is the no Doubt About it . Podcast .
No Doubt About it .
Now your hosts Kristy and Mark Runcani .
Okay , it's Monday , you look , concerned I am concerned . Because the cameras .
Yeah , our cameras are wet , but they're actually right .
It's just what we're seeing , but what we're ?
seeing is way off , way off yeah .
Yeah , good times on that . Yeah , well we'll just kind of just wing it .
Yeah , no , no , no .
Because a lot of people just listen anyway , so I don't think that's a matter . Okay , so it's Monday . It is the day before our statewide elections . Yes , we got a lot of people on the ballot out there in different counties and we got to . You know , you got to make a difference , you got to get out there and vote .
We , of course , voted early , that's what we like to do .
Yep .
And we know a few people on those ballots A few . We got a mayor that we know pretty well up in Colfax County .
Yeah , BJ Lindsey going to trying to be elected to his first term as Angel Fire Mayor . We'll see what happens . Got a lot of big plans for infrastructure . That's right . Things of that nature , that's right .
And we've got obviously some city council folks on our ballot here in Albuquerque and in other counties and it really does have more impact than you might think . So it's super important to get out there and vote , and we say it all the time . But really for even these off season or off year ones off season , that's the wrong word .
Off year they tend to have lower turnout . There's still as important . So folks get out there . It takes two seconds to do it . I mean , gosh almighty , you don't have to bless you .
Thank you , sorry about that . I'm allergic to elections now , and you can see why .
Well , I was going to say you don't even need to have a driver's license or even sort of identification .
I just walked in and I was like Terry Jones . They're like what's your address ? I fired off on the dress . They gave me a ballot and I voted .
No problem , here you go . Yeah , I went in six , seven times .
It was good . Yeah , so we're good .
Anyway , get out and vote people , yeah . Okay . So we had Vince Torres on the last episode passed out of Santa Fe , works in the roundhouse . Really good guy , like just super encouraging . We got some fun comments I wanted to share on our YouTube channel . If you haven't listened to him yet , go back and listen to him .
He's really just has a lot of wisdom , a lot of knowledge , very calming kind of presence . Some comments that thank you again for another great podcast . In the midst of all the chaos around us , god is still on the throne and he just said you know God bless you both for the show .
Another comments that I have thought about leaving New Mexico , but Vince gave me hope for the future of the state . Thank you so much . Yeah , he is great and thank you for the taking the time , you guys , to write in and to subscribe on our YouTube channel . We're trying to get to our goal there of the 5,000 .
So please hit that subscribe button on YouTube and follow us on any podcast platforms that you listen to and follow the show , yeah .
No , Vince was great Deep thinker , someone who's spent his whole life in northern New Mexico . Basically , you know , went away for a while but then came back and I think exemplifies the kind of values I think a lot of New Mexicans have . And so when you talk to Vince about how he feels about all sorts of things , he's a really interesting guy .
So if you get a chance to go back and listen to that , please do . Our next episode on Thursday is going to be Sheriff Shane Ferrari , the sheriff up in San Juan County , and he's a fascinating guy , really interesting guy , smart , a great sheriff . He's also the undertaker of there .
That's right , that's right .
He's a very it's really interesting . So he's great and I think you'll really like it .
Did he bury anybody or take any bodies in when you were there Not ?
while we were talking .
Oh , okay . Well , that's right , he carved out some time for you . Yeah , and they do pets now too . I do remember him doing pets . I remember we talked I talked to him about that , yeah .
And I think is there a certain kind of personality you have to have to be yes , you know in law enforcement and to be the undertaker .
Yes , yeah , yes , I hope you asked him some of those crazy stories he told me about that situation .
This is just like you to be like did you do this ? Oh , you didn't . Well , you should have . Did you say it before ? Did you say it before I went up there and shot these shows ?
Did I say that ?
I'm like , hey , I'm going up to Farmington . Did you do these shows ? I did , I did .
I said , I'm busy picking up some tile for a client , I'm picking out some fixturing , yeah .
And you're like hey , did you ask Shane those super secret questions ? I had no , no , I didn't . I asked him . You know some good stuff . I think we didn't get into a lot of the grizzly details though .
I'm not asking for grizzly details . I just remember some of his stories really are . They're just unreal , Like they're just stuff that I've never heard any talk about before he's hilarious yeah . Did I ever tell you I had a uncle that was a mortician A ?
mortician . Is that what it's called ? Do these words still get used ? I'm using undertaker , you're using mortician . I mean what is the real really mortician Is the mortician the person who make up , get gel to make up .
Yes , yes , they , they , they , they , and they did it in their home . They had a place in Iowa .
You bring the body right into the living room .
Into their like basement area and they would prep the bodies . And now they were a lot older than me , but I just remembered that that was the aunt and uncle that did that as a job and as a kid it totally freaked me out .
Well you know and it's oftentimes , you know like you know this TV from being a guy you have to deal with this too . And and obviously for a lot of women you know , if you get the wrong person doing your makeup , you look like you should be in a casket . I mean , I'll never forget my first ad , ava . You could look this one up on YouTube .
It's our first Senate ad .
We went down to the border .
We go down to the border and we have a makeup person with us on this crew by the way , last time we had ever had a makeup person on the crew because I told our team I'm like , listen , I don't want a makeup person who tries to get rid of the red cheeks , because every makeup person I've ever been around is like , hey , this guy's got really red cheeks .
We gotta back these things down .
So then I they're my signature . Oh , it's they're my part of my signature . People , it's not even my signature move .
It's just I look like a corpse if you try to take out my red cheeks , and so usually I just try to , you know , kind of tone them down a little maybe .
Yeah , but overall she pulled out the white pancake for you , I'm telling you here it is .
Look how white I am . Look at it Right there . Oh , my goodness .
It's not only that you're so white , it makes your lips look like you have red lipstick on .
Yeah , it does . It's not your best , look right there . No , it wasn't . I mean . Anyway , it was tough . I knew when she was doing it . I knew this was not going to be good .
Yeah , and you can't say anything to her in the moment . No , I felt terrible . Yeah , she was really nice .
She was very nice and you know . So then I'm just like well , first to add out of the box . I'm gonna look like a corpse , let's move on . Add number two .
You know , Right red shiny lips . Oh man , oh it was .
It was like God . I was like give me the fire red lipstick and the ghost face .
And the ghost face .
Let's go there it is , look at it .
So ghost face right there . Yeah , you needed a little sun there . That's all that's all . And she hid your Italian there .
She did . She tried to hide the Italian , the olive skin . She's like I'm done with this .
Okay , we have a pretty serious event that's coming up that you want to talk about a little bit this week .
Yes , our friend Toya Kaplan , who does a lot of great work with human trafficking , child trafficking in the state of New Mexico . They've got a great event coming up on the ninth , so if you want to check it out , it's going to be at New Covenant Church , 630 . It's vulnerable , no more with the fam .
So , basically , these are things you need to look for to make sure that you're not the victim , your family's not the victim , of human trafficking . It's an important event . There is a live stream available too , so you can go and check this out . You know it's at New Covenant Church on Holly , but you can get more information as well .
If you want to go to New Covenant's website , you can do that . But again , it's 630 on the ninth . Go to New Covenant Church
¶ Mark Runketty's Career and Net Worth
to check this out . This is one of those things that happens under the surface . That is a massive issue in the state of New Mexico .
And in the country , yes , absolutely Absolutely .
We've talked about it with the border . I mean it happens on the border , it happens in every state and it's a huge issue here . So , especially if you know what to look for , it's a huge help and there are some things you'd be shocked to find out .
Really , that's really happening or really that's the first step in a line of steps that could be devastating to our family . Please check it out , if you can do it .
Yeah , and they did recommend bringing up kids 11 and older . Yes , because there is a serious topic , kind of like when we talked about Sound of Freedom and we did a lot on that movie this summer . It's keep in mind just to the audiences for that and there is some serious content in that . So anyway , no doubt . Okay , so we talked about AI last week .
We talked about fake photos that people are taking advantage of people's Photos , fake video .
we did the Greta Thunberg and there's one in Biden out right now which is hilarious too . Which is it's hilarious and it's not . It's a little scary because at a certain point you're like what's true and what's not ?
Well , we would hope that I can't see Biden actually getting up there and campaigning for Trump .
No , he did . He did campaign for Trump . He's like I'm out , you should not elect me . It was really funny .
I'm thinking that one was a little bit easier to figure out .
Yeah , probably .
Okay , so I stumbled across speaking of AI . This has got to be an AI article on you . Oh nice , and it's so funny . I was like , oh , this is awesome , I can totally make fun of my husband on this one .
Which I find great joy in sometimes , oh my gosh , yeah , there's no one kicks me , like when I'm down , just like you do .
Oh my gosh , I also support you more than anybody .
It's a little bit of both . Yeah , I never know what I'm getting with you If somebody comes after you , I will take them down .
Oh , that's true , Okay , like especially if they do it on Twitter . Watch out , I'm all over it . But me , my job is to keep you humble . That's part of my job .
Anyway , okay , so the headline .
I had to look at it because it says Mark Ron Kettie net worth .
I'm like , oh , I would like to know how . So wait , the investor times did an article on my net worth .
Yeah , riveting , by the way , Absolutely riveting .
What's the investor times again .
I have no idea but , it's just what it says . It says , in this article we're gonna delve into Mark Ron Kettie's net worth as of 2023 . And along with five interesting facts about his life and career , and I'm like , ooh , I wanna know what his net worth is yeah , I do too .
Yeah , okay , good , perfect .
Well , it turns out , your .
S Well , there was a Nigerian guy who called me , oh , and he said what's your net worth ? And I'm like two million dollars . And he's like really , and he's like I have an extra two million waiting for you if you'll sign this Right . And I was like sure . Then I signed it and then all of a sudden , this article came out , yeah , perfect .
Well , yeah , because you're apparently estimated to be worth around two million . Okay , so that's good to know .
Okay , good for all of us . Really , that's a win for me too . Check my account . I've seen that recently .
It does not look like it . Don't look for it in the account actually .
Okay , got it . It's not good .
Okay , your early life in education . I don't know if you know this , but you were actually born in 1976 in California .
Yeah , you're darn right I was . You're darn right I was . You wish you were born in 1976 .
No .
I enjoyed being born in 1964 . I've enjoyed every day of it . No , no , not California , yeah , good point that too , Dallas Texas .
That's right . Well , you also attended the University of New Mexico , where you got a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology .
I don't think there's a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology at UNM . I would have gone . I will say I would have gone to meteorology school at UNM if they had had one .
Of course , because you were here , yeah , so that would have made more sense .
No , I had to . Yeah , I had to go the long distance , though I think it was brutal .
And you went to where .
Mississippi State . That's right Hopefully that okay .
So then your career beginnings and you completed your studies , you embarked on a professional journalism career and meteorology right .
Okay , that's right . Yep , that was , I nail it right now .
Nailed that one National recognition . This was my favorite part , okay . Mark Runketty gained national recognition when he joined the team at the Fox News channel in 2013 . You were meteorologist for Fox News channels . Did you know that ?
Yeah , well , yeah , Is that where the two million came from ? Yeah , that's where part of it came from . So I was working at KRQE and then they started the Fox affiliate , or they took over the Fox affiliate .
Right .
But then Rupert Murdoch saw what I was doing .
Right bringing your A game . Yeah , he was like this .
Guy is incredible .
Yeah , we gotta fly him out to New York .
We gotta fly him out , and so they'd fly me out every weekend and I would do the early morning weekend show .
Oh yeah , oh huh , and by the time I was done .
My shift was done at 5 am and I was flying back , yeah , so no one actually saw it . Well worth the time .
Yeah , Well worth it . We got the two million out of that .
Yeah , we did , we did .
Okay , then they talked about your age again , which they got wrong . Now this is the height and weight which usually they destroy you on your height . Usually everything I've ever read about you is you're like a little short guy . Right little guy yeah , you're just a little tiny guy , right . Yeah , yeah , which is not true this time . They kinda did you , right .
Yeah , they did they .
Well , they said you're 6'2" .
Yeah , okay .
Which is better than your actual height , I guess because your height isn't quite 6'2" .
Yeah , it's 6' little over 6' , but not 6'2" . Yeah , but I'll take it , but it could have said 5'2" guy .
I've seen some low ball 5'2" stop it . I'm just saying it's AI guy . It's not like this is any sort of journalist behind this , All right .
well , they gotta get the weight right go ahead .
Well , they said , you're 190 .
Yeah , I gotta be honest with you , I've been spending a little too much time in the kitchen . I'm not 190 .
I know you're not , I cook so you do cook . It's tough to stay 190 guy when you're married with kids .
That's not you know , I could get to 190 eventually again .
Oh geez , when you were 190 , you were not married to me , and that's not true . And you were running like crazy . I am still running , I know , but like crazy Because you're like crazy .
You don't have any other responsibilities in your life like two children . Oh yeah , Well , that's an issue , OK , OK .
OK , anyway , now they asked if you're married . It says here that , yes , marker and Katie is married , but they don't know it's we're married , but let's not overdo it . Go ahead , yeah , let's not overdo it , don't worry , they didn't . This is , however , specific details about a spouse are not publicly available . She's very , very private , yeah she is . I am .
I mean I'm so like I'm stealth , I could be CIA , Nobody even . I mean I'm really quiet , I'm shy .
You're not opinionated .
No , I don't go to bad on Twitter for anything .
You don't get in people's faces .
I'm really hard to find . I was not on the Mark versus the Mountain Show . No , I was not on this show and I was certainly not any part of your campaign .
No , I know .
So I'm out .
So gone . We tried to , we tried to put you in at the very end , when we hold hands on those campaign shots .
That's all we let you do . That's all I showed up for really . That's really . The team didn't trust me to do anything else .
To be honest , that was well placed .
And then it asked of you children . No , there's no information about those guys either .
Sorry , yeah , no , Sorry , All right , so you know done .
And then it just asked what your future aspirations are . Those are also not publicly known , I have none . But you're going to continue your commitment to public service and making a difference with a positive impact .
OK , so there you go . That's a if I've ever heard it .
Oh , I know , no , you're making it positive In fact . Anyway , it was just interesting . So something else that's kind of floating around the Internet , since we're talking about the interweb right now , right , this was sent to us from one of our listeners and it's this video that's kind of , as the kids would say , gone viral . Right , Did I use it ?
Right , david , did I say it right ? Oh , ok , ok , never mind , see . I need the button that just like bleep me out right there . I try to be hit for like one second .
Don't worry about , just go with it .
OK , just drop the ball . Anyway , it's this video where this guy is interviewing people to sign a petition in favor of the freeing Palestine . Ok , this is us Free the Palestinians , basically supporting him . I'm right , all the people are agreeing to sign this petition , right ?
And then he says before you sign it , though , it's my job to tell you what you're supporting , yeah . So this is the video and let's pull up the idea he's reading him the fine print . Yeah , he's reading them fine print . Ok , so let's play this and turn up the volume .
Free Palestine . Now you're all in All , right . Oh yeah , you're in , easily . I just have to read terms and conditions , just so you know . You know what you're saying by supporting him . I'm spring Palestine . You agreed to the following you agree that every Jew , christian and non-Muslim in the world must be slaughtered . I know about that one .
You endorse making homosexuality punishable by jail or death . Oh , no , you don't agree with that . You believe Iran should use Palestinians as puppets to spread radical jihad and destroy the West ? No , no , I'm glad I read the terms and agreements .
You support strict Sharia law which bans women from showing their knees hair , playing sports in public , not being able to travel without a man's permission . I'm sorry , not interested , ok , you want to terror-scoop that bed . It's babies and rape spales to replace only democracy in the Middle East ? Not sure that's not the end .
So if I sign , I agree with this , yes , baby , no , no , ok , no , thank you . I don't support any of these two things that you just read to me , ok .
OK , so yeah , yeah .
It's amazing , though , because I think it kind of brings to light . You know , I've talked to some other really educated adults on this Right . They believe that these Palestinian protests are just people who want to support people that they feel like are oppressed , and I'm like you know .
They're chanting like free Palestine from the river to the sea , which is basically wiping out the Jewish nation and people Right . I just don't understand how that line is not being connected .
But it isn't in part of the issue . Well , there's two trends of thought of this right . One is that you know you talk about indoctrination in colleges and the kids don't , you know , have access to this information in the way information works .
Now , think about TikTok , think about what happens on your feed and even Instagram , but to a higher degree , tiktok , which is , once you kind of tell them what you like , well , that's all you're getting right .
And so a lot of these people that you're seeing that are supporting a lot of these causes , they're looking at a TikTok timeline , which just is one video after another saying you know , free Palestine , free Palestine . They had to do what they have to do . They're oppressed . Israel's the oppressors .
And if you're in one camp or the other with a lot of these people and have no historical context to what they're talking about , and so , therefore , even when you tell them things like , do you know what they did ? Because they don't have access to a lot of that information because of the way social media works now , good luck convincing them .
And that's what we've talked about before . Yeah , it gets more and more difficult because you have people siloed into camps that you cannot crack them out of , where we used to have access to information on both sides , that was at least we could agree on basics of , you know , any sort of discussion . That just isn't happening at all , and that's what's so scary .
So you see something like this , and it's like whoa , you know , and then they kind of wake up .
Yeah , just , I think this is pretty good , just a real revelation of , like , what you are actually supporting , right , so anyway , moving on , all right , so there is a . There was a tweet that went out yesterday , or actually . Now this is a tweet , or actually now . This would be a couple of days ago by the time you actually this actually airs .
Distinction without a difference , in this case , go ahead .
Okay , thanks , all right .
¶ Debate Over Emergency Health Order and Police Tactics
So it says that Michelle Lujan Grisham has extended her emergency public health order on gun violence and drug use in Bernalino County until at least December 1 . Number one who's shocked that this thing ? That was going to be just 30 days , right , right , she's extended . Okay , what a shocker . Yup , I'm floored by that .
So basically , judging by this tweet , he just he's just reading a press release and then rewriting it . Correct , that's what we've got here . That's what it sure looks like to me , yeah .
Listing off like 86 firearms seized , there's been over a thousand felony arrests or warrants executed , 418 misdemeanor arrests are are been taken care of . And then it says there's been 11% increase in the inmate population , Bernalino County , over the last two months .
Okay , my question is like how many violations has MLG issued , you know , pursuant to this health order ?
None , none , none , right . This is just taking stats Right Saying oh , how many people have we arrested over the past couple of months ?
All right , let's throw that number out .
Now you could have the same numbers going back two years . Who cares Like all this ? All this is is yet again , another PR deflection . They want you to look at something and say it looks okay , right .
It looks like it's working . That's what they want you to say it looks like it's working Right .
So we're good , right , we've done enough , right . We'll go take some more guns in the legislative session , but other than that , we're good , right . No , we're not good . We're not good at all . In fact , when you just throw these numbers out there and random arrest numbers , who cares ? Who cares ?
We're still dealing with issues where you turn criminals right back out on the street , Like this is all still happening . There's still no bond for most of these people . They end up right back out committing more crime .
If you talk to police officers , you can't get them to take the job they don't want to take the job in a job where they're not appreciated and when they can't do their job . So , so this is all ridiculous . But Alex starts another great example . He'll just throw it right out . Yeah , I mean , it's truth . Yeah , yeah , there you go .
I mean , again , I'm like sitting here just going . Well , you know , so there's some policing and arresting going on . Well , I'm in favor of that , by the way . Pretty sure you don't need an emergency order to do that , correct ? I'm not sure that you don't need to extend a public emergency health order to do that . I just can't .
I mean , this is how people don't see through . This is shocking to me . I'm like okay , so what are we going to do in this session ? We're going to just use this as fodder to bring on more gun legislation . I mean , that's . My guess is that's . This is all going to keep continuing .
So it's something obviously we're going to cover as we get into that session . Because , again , I , you know , I stand by the fact . We talked about this when she pulled this , you know , unconstitutional move . What was it now 60 days ago ? Something to that degree , just how this doesn't impact actual crime or criminals .
Like we have the laws on the books to protect ourselves , but yet that's not what she's enforcing . So you know , she's just going to like let's make harder laws for people that are actual law abiding , not violent criminals .
No , when you look at tweets like this and they just throw out random numbers without any Number one , no context , right . Number two when you see something like this and it is it does not in any way impact what happens on the streets , because A what they've done is they've gone through and with this health order , it is having zero impact .
None , it's having absolutely none and , in fact , this tweet realistically doesn't even address any of that . So that's the part that's frustrating and this is why we get so on the media is because we see tweets like this that say oh , we've arrested 1400 people and we've added 10% to the prison population .
Go , go , go and wave those pom-poms , Instead of saying wait a minute , how many people are still being let out early ? What needs to be done in the legislative session ? Where are we with judges who are letting people out early ? None of these questions are asked . None of them .
And so , if you're going to work for the Roswell Daily Record or the Albuquerque Journal , stop waving the flag and absolutely get some answers . But we won't .
No , they won't . No , because that would require critical thinking and having to say listen , what's the source here ? Is it a press release ? It's a press release . Like back in the day you couldn't just use a press release as a story source .
Like you had to go back and either get somebody on camera , you had to get the opposite side and what they had to say . We don't do that anymore , we're busy .
Oh , there's , no , there's no doubt .
We're super busy , so we're not going to do that , anyway , okay , so this . You have a more harder story to talk about , so I'm going to let you talk about this .
Yeah , you know , this is something that bugged me over the weekend . I think it was . I saw it on Friday , but then I was thinking about it over the weekend and it's an issue that's kind of been in the news a little bit and many of you are aware of it .
It's the story and what happened at a Las Cruces with a gentleman who was shot and killed in Las Cruces after encountering police at a gas station . All right , so I want to kind of walk you through this a little bit and and I think one of one of my real concerns here is is what's happening with this story ?
Because it's starting to take on a national playbook scenario , which is , I think , incredibly damaging . And so we'll go through this a little bit and we want to show you a little bit of video and if you're listening to it , we'll describe what's going on .
But Presley Eze was the man , okay , and he goes to a convenience store in Las Cruces , goes in , tries to buy something of some sort , and they believe the people in there believe he stole beer . He just went in and stole some beers and went back out to his car .
So they call the cops and the cops show up and the cops go up to the car and they ask him to get out of the car because they can't get his ID , they can't figure out who he is and , as is often the case in these cases , it turns into he doesn't do what they say and it turns into a fight and and horrendous results at the end .
Okay but , but I kind of want to read you through this just a little bit and then then we'll kind of show you the video and then and show you what happened with an editorial in the Albuquerque Journal . It says more than a year after a black man died at the hands of police outside of New Mexico gas station , the state's attorney general announced charges .
Our attorney general said basically , they use unjustifiable force . And he said this is yet another example of poor police tactics . Okay , I think that's terrible wording by Raul Torres . I think it undermines law enforcement in the state of New Mexico . He should know better , but clearly doesn't . So
¶ Police Officer Shooting Caught on Video
. Lunsford , one of the officers . Officer Lunsford was one of the first officers that arrived at the scene . He questioned Eze and after he was unable to verify his identity , lunsford and another officer pulled him out of the car . And then they start wrestling on the ground . Taser gets loose . Eze gets his hand on the Taser .
One of the officers then pulls his gun and ends up shooting Eze in the back of the head , and it's rough .
It's really rough . It's rough so we cut , we did .
Yeah , none of this is going to be particularly gruesome , that you're going to see . But I want to show you a couple of different angles . So , abe , let's go ahead and play the first one and what happened with this , and we'll go ahead and hit it here and you'll see the officers are walking up and bring the audio down just slightly .
Okay , so here he is , right here . They're asking him to get out . He said he didn't want to get out , doesn't have a shirt on Because you're not coming back on file man . They're trying to pull on his arm to get him out . He says he'll cooperate , hold on right there for a second . So , right there for a quick second .
Here's the concern when they start to get him and he's like don't touch me , Okay . The problem with that is they don't know what you've got Right , and because you won't voluntarily come out of the car , because there's an issue there . So they grab him and he starts bringing him out of the car . Okay , so they were not wanting to take a risk on that .
All right , aif , go ahead and hit it again . Step out , okay , got no shirt on . His pants are falling off , but he's pushing back and wrestling with cops now , right .
Now this becomes a .
He's on the ground , back and forth with cops . Now the taser gets loose somehow he gets it in his hand , doesn't engage the taser , but does have it , and then shots are fired . One shot was fired and that was it . So Aif we can stop that right there , Now that's kind of tough to tell from that angle . So we want to take you to another story .
This was a Channel 4 story that they did covering this , okay , and so here's another angle of this story Aif you don't have to have the sound up on this , but so we'll roll it here and what you see is the cops coming up , they're getting out of their car Similar some of it's lapel cam video coming up to the car and engaging the guy in the car and Mr
Eze . So , and some of this video comes from Attorney General Torres saying they're going to press charges , and so you know they show him kind of pulling it out , pulling them out of there . And then the video from someone a bystander took some video of what happened here and here's that video and you can see they're wrestling with him .
There's a taser in his hand right there . The taser's in his hand , and so the cops don't know what he's going to do with that . Then the officer pulls out his gun and unfortunately he kills him , which is it's very jarring to see . It's very jarring Like when I , when you showed this to me , I was like holy cow .
And I think that if all you see is this video without context , okay and without knowing a lot of the history that's happened here and a lot of the backstory on things , and if you don't take time to process and say , why would he not just get out of the car ? Now , he had his own reason for that , clearly .
Well , you don't get your own reason for that , yeah nobody does with a cop .
I mean yeah , I don't care who you are . If a cop comes to your front , to your door , and says you get out , you have to get out , right , like I don't know how else you deal with that . Like you know .
Well , and I also think you mentioned context , which I think is really fair in this particular case . So we want to take you back before we get to the editorial that appeared in the journal . I want to take you back to 2021 . Many of you are familiar with the officer Darian Jarrett story .
Right State police officer pulls over Omar Quiva , right and in a white car . Now , if you can bring up the sound here , this is bad too . This is Now . We don't have this cut to hear it . You can see that there are some portions of this where , where it is not blurred out , we blurred it out .
We're not going to show it .
¶ Concerns About Police, Lawyers, and Media
But so listen to what Dr Jarrett says here . He says , hey , yeah , come on out here , let's do this . Well , quiva has a gun , he couldn't tell . Quiva has a gun and unloads it on officer Jarrett , you know . And officer Jarrett's like , do you have a gun ? And he says yes . And he says , okay , could you bring it out ? So we'll , we'll deal with this .
Doesn't have his hands on him , doesn't ?
do any of that .
He's on the opposite side of the car , so when you're a police officer in Las Cruces , new Mexico or Southern New Mexico , that goes through your mind . Now you know what officer Jarrett went through . You know that a gun was pulled on him and was unloaded on him . You have no idea what someone's got on them . You have no idea what they're going to do .
I'm not saying it's an excuse for this . I don't know , that's up to Torres and that's up to a jury , but the fact is officers have an incredibly difficult job and what we don't need because we've seen it time after time is vulture lawyers coming out and saying cops are the ones you should be afraid of .
And that is exactly what the Albuquerque Journal put on their pages on Friday . And , by the way , they live in Los Ranchos , the fanciest zip code in the state of New Mexico , and they put a headline on this story . New Mexico police are treating human beings like video game targets . That's garbage , it's not true .
This is a tragic situation and I don't know how it's going to play out , but when you have people like these two lawyers saying the things that they've said in this editorial , it's incredibly damaging Because basically , what they say is the cops are always the bad guys and the innocent victim is the person that they're contacting .
That's a bunch of crap and you know what . It's not going to affect two rich lawyers that live in Los Ranchos . It's going to affect the rest of Albuquerque and the rest of New Mexico , who've seen crime skyrocket , who've seen cops who can't do their jobs , and now these people have the gall to stand up and say you know what ?
It's the cops that are the problem . That approach has made New Mexico one of the most dangerous states in the country and I'm sick and tired of reading people like Shannon and Joe Kennedy's opinion in the Albuquerque Journal , paragraph number two in their editorial piece .
Body cam and cell phone footage uncovered despite the city's best efforts to conceal multiple public records requests , show an officer with a tattoo of a demonic Satan like figure reaching into the car and pulling Presley out of the passenger side seat .
I'm sorry , but someone's tattoo which you have no idea what the meaning of it is , and then you turn it into Satan . Oh , please Give me a break . I mean , it's infuriating . And then a soft spoken Presley is heard on body cam footage saying he's cooperating . Is he cooperating ?
He's just getting out of the car and showing him your hands and saying what do you need ? That's cooperating . He was not cooperating . Now he didn't deserve what he got . So I don't know where that goes . But stop creating . We always create this world where it's like we have an angel and we have a demon .
That's what they do , and the cops are the demon and the angels . Whoever is fighting the cop and sometimes the person fighting the cop is Omar Quiva , and that cop never gets up . So I'm sick of hearing these people say this stuff , because what they say is dangerous . These lawyers are dangerous because they don't believe in putting people behind bars .
They do believe in making sure that police can't do their job , and that does lead to the fact that we end up being less safe because of it . And another thing and this is how their little deal ends , it says last month in New Mexico , attorney General press charges against the officer that shot Presley in the back of the head .
And again , that's something that's got to be figured out . But this was a long time coming , they say . In 2021 , new Mexico had the second highest fatal shooting police rate in the country , in Albuquerque , three hours from Los Cruces , thank you . The city's police force logged a record 18 shootings in 2022 . Do you know why ?
That is Because the DOJ is in Albuquerque , because a lot of the methods that police officers can use , like bean bags and tasers , aren't used anymore , and so they end up in a high pressure situation where their only choice is to shoot . And if you look back at DOJ involvement in police departments across the country , when they get there , violence goes up .
These people make their living by making sure that people get back out on the street . That are dangerous , and they target cops . I mean these two lawyers . I can't stand it and they're dangerous . I used to read articles like this and think , ah , they're wrong and walk away .
No , they're dangerous , because if they make you believe that the cops are your enemy , the cops are Satan . That's what they're saying . Well , that's the narrative , that's their narrative , and they say it , and they say it and they say it . And they gotta go the other way , though , because we got our Satan on one side , right ?
How do they finish up the article ? Well , you have to have Presley Eze be an absolute angel , right ? So that's what they do . 400 people attended Presley Eze's funeral , including nurses who worked with him in his past career as a nurse , friends from high school and neighbors of his family who went to church with him . Does this sound familiar ?
We go through this all the time , where you just take two people , split them off one's the devil , one's an angel and let's let the lawyers come in and fix it . They don't fix it . So all I'm telling you is I don't know what happens with this , and there may well be a conviction , and there may well need to be a conviction . Don't get me wrong .
Okay , but I am telling you , when you get lawyers like this who stand up from their fancy houses in Los Ranchos , joe and Shannon Kennedy and decide to tell all of us that the cops are the problem bull , crap , that's crap you clearly live in a different world . You live in a world where you make money going after cops .
The rest of us live in a world where we rely on cops to help keep us safe . So spare me your garbage when you're creating a devil on one side and an angel on the other .
And also I would have to add to that that you know we have to hold the journal responsible for that too . Like I mean , I understand it's an editorial piece , I get it . It rises the temperature up of people .
Well , and their argument will be well . This is our opinions to opinion page and I understand that . But and I don't even think and I don't even blame the Kennedys for coming up with the headline I don't know if they did but again that headline New Mexico police are treating human beings like video game targets A horrid headline , horrid .
You don't understand what it's like to live here . Clearly , that this whole let's pit cops against people or let's go and lionize everybody who ends up deciding they're not gonna listen to a cop . It's a horrible .
We're headed down a road where every time we talk to police officers , all the time , and when we say what's the toughest part of your job now , they say we pull someone over it's game on , and that's exactly what we saw in that video . It doesn't mean that , as they got what he deserved , he didn't , he didn't and the way it worked out is horrible .
But going and turning this into cops are bad , cops are evil , cops are the devil . It's just absolutely maddening . We have to change direction here . And I agree . I mean , if I'm the journal , I don't know how they choose what goes on their editorial page . I don't and I don't write to the journal and try to get on their editorial page .
I don't ever , but if I did , I'll tell you . I just think this is so destructive . You know , there are all sorts of destructive things you don't have to give people a voice on , and these vulture lawyers are ones that I just think are so damaging .
Well , if folks haven't listened to our episode 41 , we talked with Sean Willoughby in episode 41 . And he's a former police officer .
He's president of the officers union I'm gonna mess up exactly the formal name of that , but and he spoke a lot about why the training is changing and why there's more cop shooting situations happening because of all these changes they're having to make because of DOJ . It's a fascinating interview for folks .
If you didn't take time to listen to that one , he goes into depth on exactly this topic . So that's episode 41 of our no Doubt About it podcast . You can go back and find that as well so yeah , it'll be interesting to see how this shakes out , and just you know , something to keep your eyes on , I guess .
I know , and I didn't want to end on that , but it was just , it just was bugging . Yeah , we need something more uplifting . I know , I just don't have anything , sorry , I know .
I mean , I should have brought in , like I don't know , some jokes . I know sorry .
But I just I'm so . I'm really I don't know . I'm just worried about where we are it is a state and where we are as a country . Really , this is a country thing . It's the same . And you've seen this whole thing happen a bunch of times and again I look at it and I can't . I mean , I know that it was interesting to watch you .
The first time you saw that video you were horrified that he got shot the way he did . It's horrifying it is it's ?
absolutely horrifying , so I'm not saying that he's not .
These guys aren't gonna end up in jail . I'm not saying that the guy who pulled the trigger , I'm not saying that at all , I don't know .
But I also know that for a lot of people who have never been in a fight in their lives , much less have their life on the line like cops do all the time , I think you have to be very careful in the way you approach these issues and the language that you use , and I hope that the attorney general will do that . I hope he'll use that with .
I don't think his quote was great and I think , obviously , that the you know , the family is hurting and all of this . I just , I'm just scared . I really am because I think it . You know , this is the sort of thing that happens now . And remember , if you look back at the state , even over the past 10 years , have the laws gotten tougher or weaker ?
They've gotten weaker . They've gotten weaker .
It's weaker and weaker and weaker , and so it gets easier and easier . And again everybody wonders , gee , why , when you go to a store , can you just walk out with whatever you ?
want .
Stories like this . This guy's accused of stealing beer and by the logic of this editorial , it's like leave him alone . Okay , you do that enough . Which we do in Albuquerque everybody steals something . Then , all of a sudden , nobody's safe .
Then , all of a sudden , the cops are the enemy and all of a sudden , the people that write these things are agents of chaos , and what we have is the moral fabric that holds this state together is being torn apart by people like this .
So I don't care what political party you're from , stop going and trying to inflame fights between police officers and citizens , especially when you're the rich person who lives in the biggest house on the block . Give me a break . I'm sorry that . I know Los Ranchos . You guys are really really tough there .
Real tough when you're an attorney who makes all kinds of money , but the rest of us don't live in those places , so we rely on police officers . They do a good job not always , and when they don't , they gotta be held accountable . That's moving forward . I just I don't know .
Okay , well , we're gonna wrap it up today . I'm sorry we can't bring you guys a lighter piece of news , but we will have a funnier not funnier , but he'll be a little bit lighthearted . Sheriff on Thursday .
Yeah , we'll have a good conversation with Shane Ferrari , sheriff of San Juan County . We'll talk to him interesting stuff and , by the way , also we are headed on some special assignments this next week , and so we'll have more on that too .
We're gonna go down to the border and we're gonna go and get some other interviews too , so there's gonna be a lot of stuff coming up and we look forward to sharing that with you as we get it .
