Rethinking Left vs Right

Speaker 1

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right . Well , I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right . There's only an up or down . This is the no Doubt About it . Podcast .

Speaker 2

No doubt about it .

Speaker 1

Now your hosts , Christy and Mark Runcetti . Wildfire , you can't catch a sound .

Speaker 2

I just learned a valuable lesson .

Speaker 3

Oh good , let's hear it .

Speaker 2

Don't wear an ashen gray shirt in the middle of winter . This is a terrible look .

Speaker 3

Well , I told you a second ago , I look really great , my skin looks great today .

Speaker 2

No , I'll tell you what . No , that's a great looking green shirt . I got to'll tell you what , and I'm wearing green . That's a great-looking green shirt . I've got to be honest with you and look , I'll admit this shirt is close to my heart . It's a Cobra Kai shirt . Yes , you know , sensei Kreese gave it to me back in the day .

Speaker 3

Yes , he did , okay , yes .

Speaker 2

All right , so that part's great .

Speaker 3

Now iPad . So you've , you've got to get things under control .

Speaker 2

So my apologies , I'm starting ahead of what we've got . Okay , we never ask you to play anything from your iPad . Okay , I'm not like . Hey , christy , could you run the show from your iPad ? That's never a request .

Speaker 3

I have the clips in front of me , so I'm I'm know what's happening .

Speaker 2

You do . You do occasionally hit the wrong button .

Speaker 3

My my deepest apologies , Sensei . Is that what I'm supposed to say to you ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , okay , all right . So sweep the leg and let's get this thing ready .

Speaker 3

I mean , I don't need you to .

Speaker 2

I don't need you doing right now what you're doing . There's no mercy .

Speaker 3

Okay , oh , get ready my deepest apologies , sensei , my deepest apologies . Hey , ella , ella's a little hangry . She just got home from school , so she's ready to .

Speaker 2

Yeah , we're running late today , by the way , sorry about this .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's a little late . It's your fault .

Speaker 2

It is not actually . The show was waiting for you in the oven staying warm and then you just I had a busy work day , guys , and then you just never came in . So therefore the show's a little drier than it should be probably by this point , has been in the oven for a while . But we're going to keep this thing going .

We're going to move quick today and I want to get this thing up and posted for you . There's a lot for us to talk about . We're going to talk about all different sorts of things some local , some national going on , or talk about some of what's happening on the border , some of what's going on with the new administration .

How are our local politicians reacting to some of these things ? And then the legislative sessions coming up here in New Mexico . It's just got started about a day ago . It's a 60 day session . These things tend to take a few days or even a week or so to get kind of rolling .

But we'll have much more in the legislative session coming up over the next couple of weeks here , but we will touch on it today as well .

Speaker 3

Right , we got . We got some comments too . We have some comments coming in from the last couple of shows , so I just want to read a couple . I just picked two for today . Okay , kent Kelly said I'm interested in Mark's take on a couple of New Mexico bills being mentioned that harken back to your governor run .

Eliminate New Mexico income tax and share some of the oil and gas profits like Alaska does . Today's show was great .

Speaker 2

So I actually answered Kent online , but I think you should . You know , yeah , yeah , no . I think we suggested both of those things now , not necessarily a total elimination . A lot of times , what you're looking at here , especially with where New Mexico is now , we have roughly a $3 billion surplus here .

If you were to take the income tax in the state of New Mexico and wipe it out , I think what you'd actually do here is , if you were to look at the total cost , you'd say it costs about $2 billion . That's how much you pull in in income tax . But I do think you'd expand the economy . So I don't think it would cost you $2 billion .

For example , and I think it would spur the economy in a huge way . Eliminating the income tax , especially on people earning under a certain threshold of money in the state of New Mexico , let's say , families earning $200,000 a year or less would not pay an income tax .

That would be largely , for most working families in the state of New Mexico , a 5% pay increase .

Speaker 3

That'd be huge . Let me ask you this , though , because I've talked on Twitter quite a bit about this . I'm on Twitter more than you are , by the way . I know you are , I know you just yell .

Speaker 2

Sorry , sir , anyway .

Speaker 4

Thank you for your service though .

Speaker 2

Thank you , you're welcome If you could salute me next time with my Twitter salute . There it is , anyway , just kidding . I don't mean to offend any actual military people out there , actually people who do put their lives on the line , right Exactly .

Speaker 3

So I don't mean to discount that , but just the fact that some people are saying , listen , if we eliminate the state income tax , does that mean that they have to increase property taxes or something to that degree to cover that missing cost ?

Speaker 2

Is that something ?

Speaker 3

that they would do .

Speaker 2

Well , first of all , let me just say this about what Kent's question is First of all , neither one of those things is going to happen .

Speaker 3

I know .

Speaker 2

Okay , the legislature in the state of New Mexico will not consider any of those things .

Speaker 3

And it's not because we don't have conservative legislators that are going to be trying to push those bills Correct . I mean , you can look at some Stephanie Lord . She's definitely fighting for it . Jay Block's fighting for it . I'm watching some of these people really talking about this right now . So there's people out there that are trying to fight for it .

It just Well . No , they don't have the numbers .

Speaker 2

They clearly don't have the numbers , it's never going to be introduced , it's never going to get a hearing on like none of this is going to happen , and it's too bad , because you have a government in the state of New Mexico that is incredibly wealthy right now , but the people are struggling , and so that's what's so frustrating , and so that's one of the things

we've talked about . There are a lot of people talking about it . It's not just unique to us , but but a couple of things I mean . First and foremost , what I'm saying is that if you gave everybody in the state of New Mexico a 5% pay increase roughly all working people , because that's roughly what we've got here We've got roughly a flat tax .

If you make a little under $30,000 a year , all the way up , you're paying anywhere between 5% and 6% income tax . You go put that money in people's pockets . You're going to push more money through the government as well . Now . Will you make up all $2 billion ? No , you're going to push more money through the government as well .

Now , will you make up all $2 billion ? No , you probably won't . It probably will cost you money , there's no question , but there's also no question that we have the money to do it . So why in the world would you not empower your people with more money in their pocket and give them an opportunity to provide for their families more than we do ?

We are one of the more heavily taxed states in the country , and it's not any one thing . We don't have a super high income tax rate , but when you combine our income tax rate with our gross receipts tax rate , with our property tax rate and you start adding all those things together , we're very high and we're not competitive .

So that's the problem , and that's why I support it and will always support the fact that we should at least bring the income tax rate down , and I think we should eliminate it altogether in these times . Now , if you want to sunset it so that you have it end at a certain point , then you have to re-up it again to make sure you're not in financial trouble .

Fine , but give people that opportunity or give them some money back with oil and gas . There's another way to do that . You could give each person in the state of New Mexico each year a certain amount of money .

What we did was one of the things we proposed was you take the amount , the money that we bring in in oil and gas revenue and you divide it out and you give people a certain refund back depending on how much money is made .

The less money you make , the less money they get back , so that you're not putting anything in jeopardy like school funding or anything of that nature . All these things can be done if you have people who are interested in doing it , but we do not have that in our legislature right now .

Now , that's one of the things I think the people of the state should be asking for . It doesn't matter what political party you're from . Go to your representative and say look , help us out , here we get that . The state's got untold billions of extra dollars . Why is that not being shared with the people who actually earn the money ?

Speaker 3

Plus you've got people now we've been talking about . You know we haven't talked about the economy a ton lately because we've been kind of inundated with all of the inauguration and things of that nature , but it's not like the economy's right booming all of a sudden .

Speaker 2

No , and inflation's coming back up again , right .

Speaker 3

Inflation . You've got credit card bills now that we've been talking about . Those are really hitting the mark with people that they can't pay them back right now and those interest rates are high . So a time that would really be beneficial for the residents of New Mexico to offer some of that oil and gas rebate money would be now would be right now .

I mean we've been talking about this , for I feel like me personally for three and a half years because I talked about it on the campaign trail with you . I just think it makes good sense . Alaska has proven that you can do it . I don't know why we don't do it here . It drives me bananas .

Speaker 2

Because we have a mentality in the legislature in this state , where it is government first , it goes into their coffers first . In the thought processes and what can I do to help families in my district ? The thought process is how much more revenue can we get and how much more can we spend , instead of giving it back to people . It's illogical to me .

It makes zero sense .

Speaker 3

Well , and if you are listening to our show and this is something that you agree with , I mean the best thing you can do is exactly what Mark said you need to step up and either figure out who you're voting for as your state rep because they are they're ultimately the ones that call a lot of these shots or write them letters now and say this is what you're

supporting and , like I said , there are plenty of people out there that are supporting these bills right now , and so you can show them some support . Okay , next comment . This is from Gory Burke . It says this is going to be an Epic struggle to get our agenda through . They're talking about state legislating , state legislature .

There is already pushback from our New Mexico state and from our congressional delegates . They are stuck on allowing illegal immigration , immigration and DEI .

Speaker 2

Well , yeah , I mean , look , I think the the immigration issue is a federal issue , so , and that that's where you know you have a white house and you have an executive branch that has most of the purview over that . Okay , to some degree Congress does , where I think they'd eventually like to pass something , you know , an immigration bill .

But you're already seeing some differences and we're going to talk about the differences we're already seeing right now . So this , this question , actually leads into the beginning of this show and what we're going to talk about .

So , yeah , you've got people standing in the way to some degree , but that's what elections are about and that's what you're already starting to see a shift in that respect . But I will say , I think what you've seen across the country is most people understanding that something had to be done . You could not continue the way we were going .

Most Americans are like we got to fix this , and so you're starting to see that now , and I think Trump is executing on some of what he said he would .

Speaker 3

Right and I will get into that in one second

Executive Actions and Border Changes

Speaker 2

Thanks so much and thanks for the growth we've got . It's been great . It's been great , steady and effective .

Speaker 3

We love it , so we appreciate it .

Speaker 2

Okay , we're going to go through with the kind of the thread through the show is going to be these executive actions , cause that's what we have right now .

Speaker 3

And he didn't take any . He was like I thought the day you're inaugurated , you got a parade , you got to shake some hands , you got about balls . You know all the balls to go to a lot of balls a lot of balls to do in the air , but not him . I watched like hours it felt like of him signing stuff that is .

Speaker 2

See , that's the advantage of coming back and doing this for a second time , right , because they had all this stuff laid out . And I think one thing that's happened here is you've seen a lot of the low hanging fruit signed right away . And what do I mean by low hanging fruit ? Let's go to some of these .

Axios put out a long list of exactly what started to be signed here , and I want to go through a few of these because it's interesting .

It starts with the border stuff , where I think Trump felt , like the majority of the country agreed , that we have a problem on the border , so he's pushing the border thing , and a border emergency is one of the things that Axios talks about , and one thing that I think makes the most sense and this is where you've seen most of the action here , and we're

going to get to this in just a second . But one of the things he signed was designating certain international cartels like Trend , aragua and MS-13 as foreign terrorism organizations .

Okay , that's something that should have been done a long time ago , right , but it's done now , and that's one of those things that's an 85-15 issue , right , you have very little pushback on that particular thing . And he suspended some refugee admissions programs and things of that nature . There's a lot of things that are in here and that are part of this .

Speaker 3

But also he kept remain in Mexico or reinstated it yeah , which Biden basically took away um , killed that policy and that , and which was kind of when we saw that influx of people coming up to the border . It says here that uh remain in Mexico .

The policy um that he uh reinstated is the program that released asylum seekers into the US while their cases were being considered . So the US Customs and Border Protection website said Monday that appointments made through the CBP One app at certain border crossings have been canceled . Hours later , trump nixed that program altogether .

Speaker 2

Right , and so now it is , you wait in Mexico , and if you want to apply , you apply there and you wait .

Okay , so how has this affected the amount of people going to the border We've talked about , and it made reference to Tom Homan , who is in charge of this now so has Trump just taking office made a difference , and what are the numbers look like right now ? He was on Fox news and here's what he said Total apprehensions on the Southwest border 766 .

Speaker 4

Compare that to the 10 to 12,000 Biden had at one time CBP CBP one releases zero . Chnv , cuba , haiti , nicaragua , nicaragua , venezuela releases zero . Total of 766 across the entire southwest border . That is a game changer and that is just some of the plans that have been implemented so far .

Let's talk about the 22 governors , democratic governors , that plan on resisting .

Speaker 2

Some of those quick numbers . Real quick 766 people in a day , that's a very , very low number . It's a huge border right , so that's a low number .

Speaker 3

We're having you know like 10 to 12,000 is what they were saying before .

Speaker 2

At times right , and so that just shows you some of what's happening here and that things are starting to change here and what they've done is made sure and the messaging on this for now has been very tight and has been hey look , we're going after the criminals . So what are they also doing ?

They're giving access to what they're doing to certain media outlets to show what's happening .

Speaker 3

And one of the people that went along for the ride was Bill Malugin from Fox News Right , and he says we embedded exclusively with ICE Boston today as they targeted egregious criminal aliens .

We witnessed eight arrests , including multiple MS-13 , interpol red notices , murder and rape suspects and a volatile Haitian gang member with 18 convictions in recent years who told our cameras he ain't going back to Haiti and blank Trump Biden forever .

We also witnessed a collateral arrest where ICE arrested an illegal alien who wasn't their initial target but was with MS-13 gang member , who had been released by a sanctuary jurisdiction yesterday with an ICE detainer not honored . These collateral arrests are something that Border Czar Tom Homan has warned would happen in sanctuary jurisdictions .

At one point , a woman yelled out thank you to ICE as a violent illegal alien was being arrested in her neighborhood , and here's some pics of those . Yeah , the picture we're just showing you , okay .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and so , again , you grab the low-hanging fruit , you give the media access and you say here's what we're doing , because the more access you give people , the less they can take certain stories and twist them or whatever , and you give them the chance to see what's going on .

It's how our government should operate and it's going to be interesting the next two to three weeks .

This stuff's going to keep going and it's going to be , I think , a very unique situation where , if it is handled right , I think most people in this country will say , yeah , let's clean this issue up , because , remember , you have more than a million people in the country that either are here with criminal records , violent criminal records , or have been ordered

out of the country and have not gone out of the country yet , right , right .

So that's just one of those things , and one of the other things that Trump went and signed was that if you're a student and you are supporting a terrorist organization , you're a student from another country here going to college , and you're supporting terrorist organizations like Hamas or Hezbollah , you're out . You know they can kick you out .

Speaker 3

And that's what we talked about when we covered a lot of those protests . I said you know those . You should not be here on a student visa and sit at our campuses and fight against Americans and be anti-American and burning flags and doing the get out Like so I'm .

I'm pleased to see that like , hey , you don't get to come here , go to our schools , benefit from all the programs that are here just to become anti-American . I mean , that's just dumb . I'm sorry , but that's just poor foreign policy right there .

Speaker 2

And that's again you're making the great point on the on the low hanging fruit point right . It's just that , yeah , these are things that are just returned to sanity . Just stop doing crazy things like that and allowing crazy things like that that that destabilize what is a country that is largely full of people who love this country .

So now it's not just the issue with the border . Obviously the environmental issues have been something , and so here locally , our senator didn't like some of what he saw . So again , axios mentions what's happening with some of the wind turbines and what's going on there .

Speaker 3

Well , trump declared a national energy emergency , ordering expedited deregulation , drilling , as he repeatedly vowed to drill , baby drill . One order specifically targets energy production in Alaska , rescinding former President Biden's protections around the state's coastal areas . Now , in this separate memorandum , trump's also paused offshore wind leasing in federal waters .

Speaker 2

OK , so that's one that Martin Heinrich does not like .

Speaker 3

He's upset about this . Senator Martin Heinrich says no , no , no , this is bad .

Speaker 2

So the drill , baby drill is very good news for Eddie Lee and Chavez County . Here in New Mexico , even up into Roosevelt County , we have some of the best rock in the world for oil and gas . Obviously , we're one of the best producing areas in the world for oil and gas , even up around the Farmington area as well .

So that's going to benefit the state , no question about it . Now , here we're just going to listen to what Martin Heinrich says about . Hey , you don't want the wind . You know the wind train stopped here . So let's , let's take a quick listen to what he said .

Speaker 5

Three things you need to know about Donald Trump's executive order on wind power generation . One , it's going to drive up the cost of energy for American families . Two , it'll kill thousands of jobs in the skilled trades . And three , it threatens billions of dollars of infrastructure investments in rural America .

Speaker 4

Hmm .

Speaker 2

That's rich to hear him say that A guy who's trying to end oil and gas is like that's going to raise the price of energy . Okay , we already have a structure in place , an oil and gas structure in place that powers this country , and so every time you try to stop oil and gas which Senator Heinrich's no fan of he tries to stop that infrastructure .

Now he thinks some of that infrastructure , which is now based around wind and solar in some cases , is something that should be protected . Look , here's the thing . There's another issue here , and so one thing that we've got to do and I've got it on our list you haven't seen this yet .

Speaker 3

Okay , good .

Speaker 2

I've been watching a lot of . What am I watching each night ? Now , when you come in , I'm watching wildlife stuff .

Speaker 3

You are watching a lot of . What am I watching each night ? Now , when you come in , I'm watching wildlife stuff .

Speaker 2

You are watching a lot of National Geographic documentaries , that's right , and so I found , stumbled on one from Michael Schellenberger , and I want you to read what he says about what's going on with the offshore wind . Now , everybody kind of thought it was a joke when Trump said the offshore wind projects are driving whales crazy .

Speaker 3

Okay , that was his breakdown of it . Yeah , come on . Now he's just talking to the everyday .

Speaker 2

Joe , and so he makes a point . So I want you to just read this and and just listen to what shell . And Schellenberger is no man of the right , he's actually somebody who's a big nuclear power proponent , he's very much an environmentalist and he thinks wind power , you know , causes too many issues , takes up too much land , kills too many birds , you know .

Same with the solar , you know . Again , these are not energy dense sources like oil and gas is very energy dense , for for how much you get and how much you power things , it's very energy dense nuclear , very , very energy dense solar and wind , much less energy dense Right .

And one of the comparisons he's always made is do you destroy the environment to save the planet ? And so that's what he's always said . And he said no , of course you don't , and so that's why he advocates for nuclear power and he's very much an environmentalist . Okay , so I don't want you to think you're dealing with somebody here who's far right yeah .

Far right or anything like that , but just listen to what he says about what's going on with what's happening with the whales .

Speaker 3

Well , he says in the new documentary Thrown to

Whales, Energy, and Executive Orders

the Wind . Part Two provides more hard evidence that the wind industry is harming whales . The wind industry is not killing endangered whales off the East Coast , say government agencies in the news media , but it is Before 2016 , when the wind industry increased boat traffic , sonar mapping and construction began .

Eight humpback whales were found dead per year between Virginia and Maine Since 2016, . An average of 25 humpbacks were found dead annually and last year there were a record 83 whales found dead .

Speaker 2

He gets into this interesting comparison because he says you know , the AP and news sources like that come out and say there's no direct evidence that this is happening , and he's like that's the same thing . Big Tobacco said there's no direct evidence that smoking causes cancer , but we all know it does .

Speaker 3

Right .

Speaker 2

Right , and so these whales are dying at a very high rate , and so he has , you know , with his particular you know with what he did with with thrown to the wind and it's . We're going to watch part one tonight .

Ok , it's not very long , by the way , if you want to check it out , it's a half hour long , but it is fascinating and it goes through what's happening with these whales and it goes through the sound . You should hear the sound . I mean , it really is just maddening , even when you listen to it , and everybody kind of laughed when Trump said these things .

But it's , it's a serious issue .

Speaker 3

Well , the people that are in these coastal communities , they have been fighting this . I was listening on like NPR podcasts on this I don't know three years ago , where people were coming up in arms saying do not do this to our communities , You're going to wreck our beach communities , You're wrecking our home fishing , all of them fishing , not only just how .

I mean ? I'm sorry , but these things are massive . If you look at these wind turbines , they're massive . And then when they , when they crap out which they do right there is no way to replace them . There's no place to put them . It's not like they're biodegradable and you can just put them in the ground afterwards . They're huge .

Speaker 2

Well , you would have to put them in the ground , just leave them there .

Speaker 3

But it's like a graveyard of these and they're massive .

Speaker 2

Well , no , and look , the state of New Mexico has a ton of them . And here's the thing and I will say this because I think that it makes some sense there are some communities that this has benefited , and that's fine . You need to have that discussion . No energy source comes without any impact . It just doesn't Okay . So we need to have an adult conversation .

It's like these people say I don't want any oil and gas . Well , that's just not an adult conversation , right , okay , because real adults realize if you ended oil and gas today , you'd end the planet Like it'd be over . Okay , it'd be over . So this thought process that you can just say , wipe it out , wipe it out . We're not doing any of it .

There's no problem with wind , it's absolutely great . There's absolutely no issues . No , there are issues . There are prices to pay . Solar there are prices to pay . We don't have all the rare earth minerals we need for all our solar panels . A lot of people don't have the distance to be able to put these things in and they're not energy dense enough .

There's a lot and there's a lot of drawbacks . Nuclear power has drawbacks . There are all these drawbacks . We understand these things . So have an adult discussion . Now I happen to believe oil and gas right now is still obviously the best path forward , but then we've also got to be adding things to that as we go , and so how about an adult discussion ?

Speaker 3

Well , we watch Landman , as you know , a pretty dark , violent show . By the way , I want to just preface that it is not for your kids , but it is a fascinating take on the oil and gas industry . Yes , it's hollywood , absolutely just like . It's the same guy that made yellowstone .

So , you know , not all things in yellowstone look like the show yellowstone , but it is interesting with landman because he does actually directly discuss these energy issues with the wind mills and he talks about that specifically . He's got some great lines .

I wish I could think of those off the top of my head , but one that he really does hammer somebody is talking , she's very anti-oil and gas and he's like well then , why don't you go ?

Do me a favor , return that BMW that you're driving around town , return the computer that you're working off of , take that cell phone , chuck it in the trash , go get yourself a bicycle and start working your way around the world .

Speaker 2

It's just a ludicrous discussion .

Speaker 3

You know he's like listen . Oil and gas is also not going to last forever , so we do absolutely need to be thinking about what is in the future , but right now , that is our best resource . Well , yeah , and then keep developing , and keep developing it , make it clean , those kind of things .

Speaker 2

Anyway , if you're looking for a show , and you , okay , a couple more of these easy low hanging fruit bills early on for Trump , as far as not a bill , actually just an executive order . Remember , an executive order is basically telling the executive branch of the government how it will operate . Okay , the rules of engagement , right ?

That's why he can just say these things , because he's saying here's how my administration is going to operate . He can't pass laws by just writing things out . But now has there has too much power been given to the president , while Congress has abdicated that power ? Yeah , congress has given up a ton of their power , and that's a different discussion .

We should have a different day , because this over the past 20 years , and really Obama ramped it up , and then Trump ramped it up , and then Biden really ramped it up , and then Trump has come back and said look , here's how we're going to operate with these things , but the Houthis are not .

Again , the Houthis are going out in the Red Sea and they are bombing people regularly , and Biden pulled back on some of the terror designations on them to try to , I guess , work something out with Iran and Trump's like , no , no , and so Houthis are back on the naughty list put it that way . And so that again , another easy , easy piece of low-hanging fruit .

Speaker 3

He said here let me get it . Biden lifted terror outfits FTO designation in an effort to ease diplomatic tensions with Iran , but Trump readies executive order redesignating Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization . So we will see what happens with that .

Speaker 2

And this is one we talked about a little bit also when he did the students right .

Speaker 3

Yeah , the foreign students in support of terror organizations . They're also having a kind of a rough day , it says here . Breaking news Trump has issued an executive order allowing the deportation of non-citizens , including foreign students , for supporting groups like Hamas and Hezbollah , which are designated as terrorist organizations by the US .

Speaker 2

Okay , so there's that . And then you also heard , you know , during one of the speeches that he gave and I think it was his inauguration speech you know he'd say his administration will operate as if there are two genders . Right , starts talking about that men and women's sports , things , of that . He starts talking about those deals .

Well , this all happens and signed some executive orders on that .

National Attitudes

And then the New York Times comes out with this poll Okay , they came out with a poll and they showed some interesting numbers here . Comes out with this poll Okay , they came out with a poll and they showed some interesting numbers here .

And again , the reason I bring these up is because this is the calculation by an administration that has done this before to say , okay , where are we on solid ground ? Where are our numbers ? Where things look good , where there's not going to be , we're not going to use up a lot of political capital .

Right , you don't want to use up your political capital on things that you know either may not work for you or aren't important to you . You want to make sure that when you really go for that meaning you're going to have to twist arms to vote for certain things along the way , especially in the House of Representatives .

They're going to have to be , because they only have a couple vote margin , and so if you want to get the right tax bill through for example , you want to make the Trump tax cuts permanent you better be ready to handle that . You better have all your political capital saved up . You don't want to waste it right now , okay , and so .

So these numbers from the New York times show a couple , really three different questions that were addressed , but the one I think is the most important is the women and men in sports . And how does that play out ? And where is the country ? And if you look at where the country is , the numbers are amazing . Trans women should not be allowed in women's sports .

Total , almost 80% of Americans say that's true . Okay , women's sports are for biological women . Men's sports are for biological men or women , all right . And 94% of people in the GOP say that . 67% of Democrats say that , right , say yeah , yeah , no . So this is one of those issues .

It's like come on , come on , and so that's where I think there's a challenge for the Democratic Party , because they can't be held hostage by a small sliver of their own party that says oh , no , no , no , no , no , you know , let's not do this . That's a mistake and I think they'll they'll come back on that .

Speaker 3

Well , yeah , I mean , you have the majority of the country that are in favor of like let's get this border under control , right , right , no women in men's sports , right ? These are like what you said . 20 , 80 issues are men in women's sports . Yeah , sorry , did I mix that up ?

Yeah , again , it's a little late for me , but anyway , all that to say is you have these issues that are largely supported by both sides of the aisle right , and what I thought was interesting was when you hear some of the very I don't know what you really want to refer to them far left maybe , or left media organizations that are saying , man , that speech was

so dark by Trump . Right , they're all talking about how dark it is , and I'm like he's talking about issues that 80% of the country are in favor of and he was incredibly positive about making this the new era . So I'm thinking what did you classify as dark ? What did we miss that you think is so dark ?

The fact that we are saying no women in women's bathrooms , women in women's sports , like we're protecting women , that's a dark day for you . Well then , you better go ask yourself what's a dark day for you . Well then you better go ask yourself what's a light day for you .

Like I guess I just don't understand , like how they would think that was such a dark speech and so heavy , and I'm like , oh , give me a break . Like this has gotten so wonky and the illegal immigration has gotten to such a degree that we never anticipated that it has to be brought back .

Speaker 4

Right .

Speaker 3

Under control and that's what he's saying and he's like I'm going to put America first . I'm sorry . 80% of the country believe that .

Speaker 2

And I do think it'll be interesting to see how the democratic party navigates this . And just one more thing on this the minors and puberty blockers . Right , 71% of people in the country say minors shouldn't be able to access you know , permanent puberty blockers that affect them for the rest of their lives . 90% of the GOP says that . 54% of Democrats say that .

So it's , it's just so . Some of these things are just like okay , all right , that's how it goes . So anyway . And there are a couple other headline grabbers . They taught you know the Greenland stuff , but he talks about all the stuff that that they thought was funny . Funny , changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America .

Speaker 3

That's an interesting one . I'm still , I'm still confused on how he can do that . But you know , we'll see . I don't know , I think the I don't know if you put it in here the like the birthright citizenship thing . I think he's that's going to be a tough one because you know that that got brought up . Yeah , I think they're going to lose that .

I think that was already contested in the late 1800s is what I heard recently , and that was like went up to a Supreme court ruling up in the late 1800s , Right , and it still was like yeah , no like that .

Speaker 2

But that makes an interesting point , which is if you go out there and you're this new administration and you say , okay , here's what we're going to do , we're going to go out and sign 150 different things . Good luck trying to fight them all .

Speaker 3

Right , 150 different things . Good luck trying to fight them all . Right , I mean that's that's so .

Speaker 2

that's maybe a strategy . That's a strategy , sure . So you do the low hanging fruit , the stuff that you know which we've talked about in this whole episode , like that's all low hanging fruit . There's less low hanging , but there's things that are an issue for them . Right . There's the January six pardons .

There are some people on the on the Republican side that have been like that's too many people , that's no way . There are people that shouldn't have been pardoned . There are things on the birthright citizenship People say I don't know . When you look at the constitution , that's a tough case to make .

You know the TikTok situation you know like so yeah , the TikTok thing is confusing . It's all mixed in , so , in other words , I think what you're watching here , though , is you're watching somebody who almost got to watch their own movie and say , hmm , if I could change it next time , here's what I would do , and they got a chance to change it .

Speaker 3

And so now they're changing . He basically goes and he signs these and then it's just up to see what . What sides take him on . Yeah , and I think some of them sue them .

Speaker 2

Yes , yes , okay , some will be yeah , absolutely so . The birthright citizenship is going to go to the Supreme court . Yeah , and we're going to know about that soon enough .

Now , in some cases they'll be like some they'll lose , some they'll win , and a lot of these are written in a very clever way to to address what they want to address Again , when you watch this time around , they've seen their own movie and they saw where they had trouble before .

He has much better staff around him now , much more pointed uh over really much more pointed policy all the way across the board . And then he's also benefiting from the fact that he's walking into something where there are a lot of messes .

So so not only do you see this and you watch an improbable comeback of him back in office , you're watching him adjust because he has the rare ability now which no president in our lifetime has had . It's served for four years .

Sit out four years , figure out what you did wrong , make sure you don't do that again , put in better people and then try to go at it again . See how you do .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's like you graduated high school . You were pretty good at football , but you weren't the best you could be . You go out for four years to train as hard as you can and to get people around you that are making you stronger , better trainer .

You become the new Tom Brady , so to speak , and then you go back to high school and relive your high school football . How great would that be , I would do it . I would do it in theater . I would come out and get all the voice lessons in theater acting as I could get , and then just go back in there and dominate .

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh , I know , oh my goodness , I know we are comparing high school sports and theater to the presidency . It's the same thing . I'm sorry , it's really not that fair . It is absolutely fair and it's exactly right . So just to give you an idea of how unique this is , by the way , Politico , their chief editor , came out with this article .

Speaker 3

It says time to admit it . Trump is a great president . He's still trying to be a good one .

Speaker 2

Well , so this is an interesting article . President , he's still trying to be a good one . Well , so this is an interesting article . So I pulled two paragraphs here that I wanted you to just read and just explain this just a little bit . But here's what he says he says let's quickly exhale .

Speaker 3

Great in this context is not about a subjective debate over whether he is a singularly righteous leader or a singularly menacing one . It is now simply an objective description about the dimensions of his record . He began a decade ago by dominating the Republican Party . He soon advanced to dominate every discussion of American politics broadly .

Now his astonishing comeback after his defeat by Joseph Biden in 2020 and the notoriety of the January 6th 2021 riot makes clear there are certain things he is not , and one big thing he is . He is not a fluke who got elected initially in 2016 , almost entirely because of the infirmities of his opponent .

He is not someone the American public somehow misunderstands , as though Democrats and the news media have not spent 10 years forcefully highlighting the risks of his record and character .

Speaker 2

And one more paragraph .

Speaker 3

He says he is someone with an ability to perceive opportunities that most politicians do not and forge powerful , sustained connections with large swaths of people in ways that no contemporary can match . In other words , he is a force of history .

Speaker 2

It's an interesting . It was an interesting article . It really was , but just shows you you know , yes , you can say a lot of things about Trump and , believe me , there are going to be things along the way . I don't care what side you're on , You're going to have a problem with them . On .

Speaker 3

Right , we do with every president right .

Speaker 2

I mean , there's just going to , it's going to be that way , there just isn't no , and there won't be in this case either , but still , you watch this and how things have changed , so I just can't wait for how many executive orders were signed on the first time he's chucking out to the audience Again .

Think about that you sit in front of a group of thousands of people signing and then you're chucking . That's , that's perfect , cause usually you'd be quietly in the oval office . There's no cameras there , you're just , and also he's eating .

Speaker 3

he's taking it as a PR move , Lord , like I've never seen signature , I mean the marker .

Speaker 2

you hear , the marker doing the thing I mean it is . It's marketing brilliance and it is keeping your promises on a lot of the stuff . That again is low hanging fruit .

Speaker 3

Okay , I say I think that's true . I think he could have waited one day to do all of that and still get all the PR .

As a former PR , like a PR person , I would say do that on day two , because on day one Biden stepped in it with pardoning his whole family that was the news cycle of that day , on top of the inauguration , and instead of letting that play out the way it needed to play out , I think Trump signing all these executive orders and some of them , people had a

problem with and some people don't , I don't know I think he could have maybe cannibalized his own ability for that strategy for Wednesday .

Speaker 2

Here's my argument on that . It's that Biden is done . I mean really you can keep looking back at Biden .

Speaker 3

Looking back , it's that day guy .

Speaker 2

I understand what he did . I totally get it . I totally get it .

Speaker 3

He said he would never do it and he also accused , if Trump did it , that that was really the fall of American justice . I get it .

Speaker 2

I understand . I'm just saying that I think it was better for him to say I'm getting to work right now keeping my promises , and you have a bigger audience to watch you .

If you quietly wait till the next day , or even the next day , you sit in the Rose Garden and you sign those things out , or you sit in whatever , wherever you want to sign these things from , you're not going to get the same type of bang for your buck . This is about keeping promises . I get the Biden thing . It was not a positive thing for the country .

It's not our presidential you know ability , our president's ability to be able to just start to , you know , wipe things away . That's got to be addressed .

Speaker 3

We also want to talk a little bit here about local news . We've got our 60 day session that just kicked off this week as well , and also the governor , michelle Lujan Grisham . She gave her state of the state on Tuesday . I think it's going to be kind of an exciting 60 day session and I'm not sure it's going to be . It's all for the right reasons really .

I'm not sure it's going to be exciting in ways that we would like it to be exciting

Legislative Plans and Winter Weather

.

Speaker 2

Well , the legislature has a unique opportunity to address crime . Hopefully they will . I don't know . I mean , the real concern here is do you have a focus on the people that it should be focused on ?

In other words , strengthening penalties for people who commit violent crimes in the state desperately needs to happen , and if there's this check the box , let's go to law abiding citizens and make sure they can't have guns . Is that going to be helpful ? No , it won't be helpful . So they have to change the way they deal with that .

Obviously , they want to address behavioral health problems . Those do need to be addressed . So I think there's some opportunity here . We'll see what happens . I mean , there's a lot that's going to come up here .

There are some bills that have already been introduced , really going after oil and gas , again trying to make it more difficult , and again , I've never seen a state that has such a golden goose that they try to kill every legislative session . But these guys , you know , again , they step in and do these things . So we'll see what ends up happening .

Because it's a 60 day session , this tends to get started a little slower here . You know , a couple of weeks in things usually start to ramp up , but we'll have guests talking about the bills . We're going to talk about what's going on .

We'll probably even grab a couple of legislators at some point and talk to them as well about what's happening during this legislative session , and we'll keep you posted on exactly how things go as they go , especially some of the bills that end up being a real concern , ones that look like they're going to work their way through and could potentially be passed .

There's a paid family leave bill that's up that will make doing business in New Mexico tougher . There's no doubt it's going to be really hard on small businesses . It's been killed two or three times and it's being brought back up . So when that happens , that tends to get pushed . Now governor didn't talk about that during her state of state .

So we'll see what ends up happening but that's where we are with that .

Speaker 3

Yeah , a lot of people have been asking if we're going to be covering all this . So just keep in mind that this is a long session and a lot of these bills won't even make it , you know , past the first step . So we want to wait and make sure we're talking about what the things are actually going to get and pulled in and voted on .

So just making sure that people are clear on that . Okay , your favorite thing to talk about in the world besides the Cowboys football team is weather .

Speaker 2

Yes .

Speaker 3

And talk about some weather phenom that we have had across this country In the last what , 48 , 72 hours ?

Speaker 2

It's been insane Coldest air in decades , in many areas Angel fire . We'll start there .

Speaker 3

Well , an angel fire unfortunately kind of has a reputation of being one of the coldest parts of the country sometimes .

Speaker 2

It can be . It can be . The Miranda Valley is extremely cold in the morning .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it warms up , but you know , negative 30 , pretty chilly . This was kind of interesting . This was a picture or some video of some bubbles . These are like air bubbles that froze , and a woman captured them with her camera .

Speaker 2

Kelly Jost .

Speaker 3

Yeah , and a woman captured them with her camera . Kelly Jost , yeah , and Kara Kiwi ran this story . I thought those were just actually really pretty and quite like a unique sight to see , and it was 32 below a couple mornings ago in Angel Fire and again , the unique thing about Angel Fire is it's one of these places that has a huge temperature range .

Speaker 2

You get super cold at night , but then it actually warms up nicely during the day , even when it's pretty cold .

Speaker 3

So cold at night , but then it actually warms up nicely during the day , even when it's pretty cold . So it's actually a really unique spot .

Speaker 2

My question my theme on skiing up . There is you , just wait until about 10 30 or 11 , and then it's great .

Speaker 3

Then it's warmed up and you're not freezing .

Speaker 2

No , the temperature ranges can be 60 degrees . I mean , think about it in the afternoon . If you get to 30 , you're at a 60 degree temperature range . It's crazy yeah .

Speaker 3

It's definitely still . You can definitely hit the slopes very easily .

Speaker 2

Yes .

Speaker 3

It's just a matter of maybe just not first chair , yeah .

Speaker 2

Perhaps . Yeah , not first chair . No , that's no doubt , if you do layer way up .

Speaker 3

Yeah , all right , this one blew my mind . The snow on the beach in Destin , florida . Yeah , it's incredible .

Speaker 2

I mean I can't imagine waking up and you're just there's a lot like snow on the beach Like that's a unique .

Speaker 3

that's gotta be unique . And then I pulled this picture . This is new Orleans . This is the Jackson in Jackson square . This is the big cathedral in Jackson square . And I used to live in Louisiana and I'll say that ice storms were pretty common , but not a lot of snow .

So the fact that new Orleans got snow , I think this was a record for them to get snow .

Speaker 2

Unbelievable . Yeah , yep , and they got some areas outside New Orleans got five inches of snow , so it wasn't some little deal that was .

Speaker 3

Lake Charles , they said , set a record . I think the last record there was . It said in our time , in modern time .

Speaker 2

Modern time , yeah , so whatever that means , to the weathermen , but in modern time .

Speaker 3

I don't or what I don't want modern time I don't know , it's just , it's a record .

Speaker 2

But I will say then and then you know , tragedy did hit the extended Ron Keddie family .

Speaker 3

Dun , dun dun .

Speaker 2

Lisa Ron Keddie Zimmerman .

Speaker 3

Yeah , your sister .

Speaker 2

My sister in Georgia . Yeah , take a look here .

Speaker 3

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Their boat . This is really tragedy . That's , I'm not really calling this tragedy , but the marina where they store their boat collapsed .

Speaker 3

Yeah , she said it was icy rains . Actually , that like weighed that structure down that was protecting their boats . So yeah , not good news if you're the boat owner . Not good news for Lisa .

Speaker 2

No , she's , but you know , she's a baller , she's going to tough it out .

Speaker 3

She's fine . She'll have another boat .

Speaker 2

They'll either no no , no , no , They'll get that thing fixed .

Speaker 3

Oh , she'll fix that thing Are you kidding me . I'll do this myself . Her and Carl will like lift that thing up and they'll fix that boat . They'll be out in the lake in no time making making things happen .

Speaker 2

So okay , one more thing I had to share with you .

Speaker 3

Yes .

Speaker 2

Okay , I of my hatred for the Philadelphia Eagles .

Speaker 3

And you have turned me into an anti-Eagle fan as well . I can't stand them Because of that . And I hate that they're and I have good friends that are Eagles fans and I'm like and you're wearing .

Speaker 2

Eagles colors right now . I hate no , I'm not . Well , you really are .

Speaker 3

I'm just wearing my favorite color , which is green .

Speaker 2

Come on now . All right , all weekend against Washington . I'm actually rooting for Washington , who I don't like that much more than them , because they're a cowboy rival too , but nothing worse than Philly . Well , philly's mayor gets out and she's going to do a little Eagles chant , and the Eagles chant doesn't go quite like you would anticipate .

Now let me just ask you if you're spelling Eagles , how would you spell Eagles ?

Speaker 3

Well , if it's like the bird , which I assume it is , it is E-A-G-L-E-S .

Speaker 2

Okay , good point , all right , let's let's take a listen to the mayor of Philadelphia .

Speaker 1

You hear you all say E-L-G-L-E-S Eagles . Let's go , birds .

Speaker 2

Let's go , birds . E-l-g-s-e-s .

Speaker 3

Wow , maybe she got nervous .

Speaker 2

I agree . That's why I would just here's the thing I agree as someone who spells terribly listen , don't spell anything Like if you're Dan Quayle , don't spell potato Like . Just don't do it , yeah , don't do it , don't go out , there .

Speaker 3

No , no , no , yeah , yeah , yeah , that can be a tricky word , I agree . There's some words that are tricky .

Speaker 2

It's just like hey , would you like to be a judge in our spelling bee ? No , no , I wouldn't . Oh no .

Speaker 3

Because I don't , you won't screw that up , I promise you'll be just fine , but anyway . But I , and I have to say I have you know I know we talked about this briefly that we started watching the the dynasty um the dynasty show on Apple TV .

Speaker 2

the show about oh , the new England Patriots .

Speaker 3

Yeah , the new England Patriots . And I'm not a big football watcher . I mean I'm not by any stretch of imagination . Fascinating documentary , by the way , and I don't hate the Patriots anymore Really . Yeah , I would say honestly you like Robert craft ? I like craft the owner he seems like he knows what he's doing . He seems like a likable guy .

I'm sure he's a bulldog when he needs to be .

Speaker 2

Oh , I'm sure he is too .

Speaker 3

But I really liked his honesty , I mean there was Tom Brady .

Speaker 2

I loved it .

Speaker 3

Like Tom Brady's on there and they're asking Tom stuff . So , tom , what did this conversation go about ?

Speaker 4

you and Belichick , blah , blah , blah and he's like oh , there's things I like to keep private .

Speaker 3

Then they go to Kraft and Kraft's like .

Speaker 2

I love this guy . He unloaded and it was very interesting . It definitely slanted toward making Belichick look like the bad guy and Brady and the owner look like the good guys .

Speaker 1

But it was very interesting .

Speaker 2

It was great . Yeah , it really is interesting , it made you like the players of that team ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , like I think when you can . It's like anything . You think you have an opinion about somebody . You think you don't like them very much . I mean , there's plenty of people out there that apparently hate you and me . I don't know who they are , but I'm like , you hate us . Have you met us ?

Like , have you honestly ever sat down and talked to us Cause I don't think we have that many arch enemies that like spend time with us .

Speaker 2

Like that'd be embarrassing .

Speaker 3

Like like I don't know if you've actually ever talked to us , but whatever . But I'll just say , if you think you hate the Patriots or you love the Patriots , it's an excellent document . It was just really well done . So Apple TV , the dynasty .

Speaker 2

Plus , you know , six Super Bowls is unbelievable .

Speaker 3

And Tom Brady's new hair . What is that about ?

Speaker 2

I know it's the only guy I know of whose hairline's going down , not back .

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's incredible Great hair . And whatever his skincare regime is . Ella , you love skincare . We need to figure out what Tom Brady's skincare is , because it's phenomenal .

Speaker 2

Yeah , he's doing a good job . I need to do that . He's doing great work .

Speaker 3

I got us off .

Speaker 2

I'm sorry . Well , no , no , it was good If I had known I'd .

Speaker 3

That's my talk of football right there for you . I know I do love that you love sports documentaries . I love sports documentaries you don't like sports .

Speaker 2

But you like sports documentaries . No , I like basketball .

Speaker 3

I like to watch basketball . Oh geez , that's the sport I actually understand . So anyway , please , okay , go Lobos . Let's end this thing right now .

Speaker 2

Good job , go Lobos is right , I think they Okay All right .
