ゴーストギアは放棄された後で海へ流れ出て漂っている漁具のことで、「幽霊漁具」と訳されます。漁具の機能を保ったまま海を漂うため、海洋生物を捕らえる「ゴーストフィッシング」を引き起こし、船舶の事故にもつながるとされます。
