When going into the cinema turned into clicking through OTT platforms during the pandemic, we adapted to the 1920 x 1080 screen size and relegated the good ol' Talkies to nostalgia. But cinema is not only a medium for story-telling, is it? It also stands as a character, bearing witness to a changing city—who enters, who leaves mid-way, and who stays.

Gulabi Talkies, Vaidehi's story in Kannada, tells the story of a single-screen theatre in a small town shaking up women's lives like a storm in a tea-cup. Through the character of Lillibai, a midwife turned gatekeeper of the Talkies, the theatre births for women a new understanding and identity, just like a midwife does.

In this episode, the story has been transliterated in Hindi with a musical imagination of dialogues and tracks from 1970s/1980s Bollywood cinema that invoke our collective sheher, kasbah, and gaon.

महामारी की वजह से जब हमारे थियेटरों पर ताले जड़ गए तो हमने उनकी याद में अपने को 1920X1080 के टीवी स्क्रीन में समेट पर ऑनलाइन डिजिटल फ़िल्मों और सीरियलों में ख़ुद को डुबो लिया. लेकिन, एक सिनेमाघर, मल्टीप्लेक्स, सिंगल स्क्रीन पर्दे की किसी शहर के बनने में क्या भूमिका होती है? क्या ये सिर्फ़ बड़े पर्दे पर किसी कहानी को हमारे लिए जीवित भर करते हैं या ये शहर के भीतर रह रहे किरदारों की ज़िन्दगियां भी बदलते हैं.

कन्नड़ कहानी गुलाबी  टॉकीज़  इस जिज्ञासा का बहुत मार्मिक ढंग से जवाब देती है. लेखक वैदेही की इस कहानी का हिन्दी अनुवाद कर इसे निरंतर रेडियों के ज़रिए हम आपके साथ साझा कर रहे हैं. यह कहानी एक सिंगल स्क्रीन पर्दे के पीछे की कहानी है जिसने उस छोटे से कस्बे की औरतों की ज़िन्दगी में रातों-रात ही तहलका मचा दिया. कहानी की मुख्य किरदार लिलीबाई – जो एक दाई का काम करती-करती थियेटर के गेटकीपर का काम भी संभालने लगती है - की कहानी में थियेटर उसी तरह नए रूप में जन्म लेता है जैसे एक दाई की ज़िन्दगी में कोई नया बच्चा पैदा होता है.

निरंतर रेडियो के लिए इस कहानी को हिन्दी में रूपांतरित करते हुए इसमें 1970-80 के दौर की अनुभूतियों को हिन्दी गानों के ज़रिए वैसा का वैसा भाव देने की कोशिश की गई है जिससे एक शहर या कस्बा हमारे सामने जीवित हो उठता है. तो फौरन ही इस कहानी को सुनें... लिलीबाई तो पहले से गेट पर खड़ी आपका इंतज़ार कर ही रही है.
