Episode description

In this episode we talk about homework! In a new “go deep” format episode, we explore the impact and significance of homework - Is it effective? Is it over-used? First we explore our memories of homework as students, then our experiences as teachers, before introducing an outside source, in this episode, it’s ASCD’s article which quotes the The National PTA and the National Education Association “10-minute rule.” http://www.ascd.org/publications/educ... Also, check out John Hattie’s research on homework “effect size” here: https://visible-learning.org/2014/09/... Our “tool” for the week focuses on how to use homework to connect students to feedback from the teacher and to promote reflection. We share our 4 guidelines for homework: Inappropriate homework produces little or no benefit. Err on the side of giving less. Use little doses. 5-10 minutes is as good as 1-2 hours. Differentiate your homework. Make it optional or give choices.
