Ever heard of the story where a horse felt proud while he carried a king on his back and thought that everyone was bowing to him? It isn't to the horse that people were bowing but to the king he carried. I've always wondered why do we have an acknowledgement page at the start of every report or thesis? It's us who do most of the hard work, why then give a lot of prestige and honour to others, some of whom we've hardly met?
In retrospect, why did we have to stand up and sing 'good morning sir....' whenever our principal walked into our class? Why do we have to treat our boss with respect? Just like the horse, are we mistaken that it's not always us, but also those who have authority over us, who deserve our respect? Or was the horse right in his thinking?
