Episode description

10 summers ago, the Boston Celtics shook up the NBA landscape with the acquisitions of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in the 2007 offseason. With the two stars joining Paul Pierce, Boston had a trio of Hall of Famers leading a 66-16 regular season charge. Despite numerous challenges in the playoffs, Boston managed to make the NBA Finals and defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2.

I had Jackie MacMullan on the podcast to talk about the two trades that transformed Boston from loser to champion in an instant. Jackie covered the team and the NBA as a columnist at the Boston Globe and a senior writer at ESPN. We got into how the trades came about — Seattle and Boston’s draft night deal involving Ray Allen and the Minnesota deal involving Garnett.

We also talked the initial partnership between the three stars, how they hit the ground running, the playoff run and highlights, the relationship issues between Allen and the rest of the team, Rajon Rondo and also I had Jackie talk about five random players who played for the Celtics during her time covering the team.
