¶ Illuminating Our Shame
The energy of this retreat and the purpose of connecting with our shame is so that we can illuminate, we can bring light to these parts of ourselves that we are hiding. We are hiding from ourselves and we are hoping and praying that other people do not see this wrongness of who we are. It takes a lot of energy to be in shame. Thank you for tuning in your consciousness to the Naked Human podcast. I want to acknowledge your presence and what it took for you to be here today listening.
My intention for you is that you receive what you came here for and find what you didn't know you needed. This podcast is about what it means to be a human being and what it really means to be naked and how our relationship with Mother Nature has the power to heal us. My name is Carrie Cott and I'm a new to Nature photographer, licensed physician of Chinese medicine, plant guide and wild woman embodiment mentor.
I help women heal from sexual trauma, awaken their authentic voice, and distinguish between fear and intuition so they can be led by their deep feminine heart. I bring to life in this podcast my own internal wisdom. I will only share what I've learned and experienced on a personal level. As you listen, I encourage you to take from this what you need and just trash the rest. So happy listening. Hello lovelies.
In this episode, I'm going to share with you about the Wild Wisdom nude retreat, happening March 19th through the 23rd, 2025, in Brooksville, Florida at Great Spirit Farm. Now, this is the third annual retreat at Great Spirit. We've been so blessed to be welcomed into this sacred space, this sacred land that's been tended to and cared for and cultivated and has hosted hundreds of sacred ceremonies.
And this is where we commune to do this work, to connect with our bodies, to heal trauma, to embody more of our woman, to touch aspects of ourselves that have not been touched emotionally, physically, energetically. This particular retreat feels like, oh, what is the word? Magnifying is the word that that comes. It's, it's. Every retreat is expansive and reaches a new edge beyond the previous retreat because the creation of these events has no choice but to expand.
So this magnifying energy, this magnetic, illuminating space is held in this retreat. And there are, there are many different aspects of the medicine that's available in this retreat that just like reaches these new edges. I'm just going to start diving into that and sharing just some aspects of that that I think are really important, like highlights to know about this particular retreat. And that's already one of them. It's that there's like touching on all these places.
Like, imagine, close your eyes. As long as you're not driving or something, listening to this, close your eyes and just become aware of your body and the space that it inhabits. Now imagine as if there was this touch, pressure happening from the inside of your body to your shoulders, to your arms, through the sides of your abdomen, to your chest, to your back, to your hips, to your thighs, to your feet.
And this is like the capacity of this container is about touching multiple places within our being that haven't been touched. There's a embodied aspect of this retreat that's rooted in communing in partnership with our shame. Shame is often this, like, depicted ugliness. Now the experience of shame is really like grueling and ugly and gross and like morbid and dark.
In the experience that we are experiencing shame, shame itself or the thing that we feel shameful about is, I wanted to say, not actually ugly, like it's.
¶ Understanding Shame: A Path to Healing
It's. It's actually a beautiful partner if we're able to actually create that partnership. And it. Shame, the experience of shame in ourselves, in our body, is like one of maybe the lowest vibration available to us. It's really heavy. It's really dark and hidden. And I like to bring in the distinction that shame, shame sounds like I am wrong versus, wow, that thing maybe wasn't really the right thing for me to do or like, I fucked up, I take responsibility. Shame is. I am the fuck up.
¶ Illuminating Shame: The Journey Within
I am wrong, I am bad. It creates. It is the storyline that we are this horrible, wrong, bad, ugly, morbid, gross piece of trash. I mean, really, that is the experience of shame. And you know, maybe you have a slightly different dialogue about shame for you and that's okay. So the energy of this retreat and the purpose of connecting with our shame is so that we can illuminate, we can bring light to these parts of ourselves that we are hiding. We are hiding from ourselves.
And we are hoping and praying that other people do not see this wrongness of who we are. It takes a lot of energy to be in shame, to have shame, to be actively experiencing shame, to be triggered in our shame. It takes a lot of energy to keep. Keep it dormant, keep it in the shadows, keep it locked away. So we commune with this energy. We create a space that we can illuminate, that we can bring in light so that we can. We can create space within our. Our body.
We can liberate this energy and by communing with shame and create so this like creating a partnership with Shame is really special. And I'm just only talking from my personal experience because having met shame in my own personal way, shame completely appeared, not as I expected, but when we can invite in a partnership with an energy. Because look, the.
The thing that we feel shame about, which can be a lot of different things, is an aspect of ourselves that is locked away in our own darkness, like, kept in this prison, tucked away. And it's just a part of ourselves that is yearning to be loved, seen, held, witnessed, acknowledged, felt. So by bringing in partnership of shame, like our shame buddy, we can call on our own selves as an ally to bring light.
It's like reaching into this, like reaching into our own prison, to ourselves and extending a hand. So what's showing up right now is also just highlighting that like this, like tapping into parts of our shame can feel uncomfortable. This is not about going and sinking in to be. To be depressive. This is about literally extending a hand to ourselves to liberate ourselves. And I guess what's popping in is I can just like hear commentary of people like, let's not go and dwell in the past.
Let's not go into all those negative things. And why do we always have to be dredging up things, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, like that conversation. And look, I get it. There's a lot of things on repeat where we're just like going into our own muck over and over. But this is a really special experience. In our naked bodies held in our natural environment in a space of intention, of liberation. We have to feel the unfelt in order for it to transmute, in order for it to become anew.
We have to acknowledge things that we are suppressing in order for order for us to breathe deeper, in order for us to sleep more soundly, in order for us to feel safe in our fucking bodies. Bypassing and avoiding that which we are suppressing doesn't help us. It's like if you were sinking in quicksand and it's like, nope, not gonna deal with that. You sink into the quicksand. Does that mean that it doesn't exist?
This is about illuminating, bringing to light, being able to accept and integrate all the parts of ourselves to. To. To actually feel our wholeness. Yes, we are whole and complete as we are. And yet we have fragmented pieces of ourselves. And this is about, wel. Welcoming ourselves home, integrating fragmented pieces back, back home, our true home and one of our incredible allies that is present for us during this journey this retreat is Father Earth Tobacco, which is.
He is an incredible plant Spirit that is super near and dear to my heart. And he's an incredible ally that helps us remember who we are. And I'm aware that many people have a stigma about tobacco. And I would like to clarify that it's actually not stigma of tobacco because no plant, no, no plant forces itself onto us. First of all, I'm this little inner joke with myself that like no plant jumps into my mouth. I mean, like no plant forces.
It's like it's forced itself upon me to ingest it or to do anything with it. And there's a. There's a stigma because of not having a right relationship. There's a blame a human experience of blaming things outside of ourselves for wrong things happening in our lives. So I'll just call it out in the way that addiction, cigarettes, addiction is a human experience. The addiction itself is not a plant, is not an experience. Addiction itself is stemmed from shame, from repression.
And addiction is the experience of us seeking to soothe some part of ourselves that is in extreme pain. And so there are plants and experiences that we seek out in order to attempt to find relief. I mean, addictions come in many forms. Can be addicted to tv, we could be addicted to exercise. We can be addicted to sex, we can be addicted to heroin, we can be addicted to alcohol. We can be addicted to complaining like there are so many things, but at the root is not the thing we are addicted to.
And then there's the experience of cigarettes, which are loaded with chemicals and is not in right relationship with plant of tobacco in this example.
¶ The Healing Journey with Tobacco
And so ironically, through my personal relationship with tobacco, and I'll share more about that in a future podcast episode where I will devote the whole conversation to tobacco along with other future episodes where I talk about other plants as well. So this ironic experience with tobacco is he has been medicine for healing the wounded root of addictions. This has been my personal experience, and it continues to be my personal experience with tobacco.
And the medicine that he strongly brings into the space is the reminder, the remembrance of who we truly are and places our awareness within ourselves as the responsibility. So you can think of that as the responsibility of anything, but also the. The responsibility of all the beautiful things that you are receiving in your life like you did those things. And that is big, big medicine from Father Tobacco. Father Earth is a name grandfather energy.
This very masculine energy he brings to the space. And you know, even some people that work with tobacco sometimes feel feminine energy. And it's. There's. There's no right or wrong way about how you experience any Relationship, whether it's a plant or a human element. But there's this presence of having this. This, like what I believe is the true taste of masculine presence, space, holding, safety and protection. And so believe it that this medicine is an important part of this retreat.
And we'll be working with him in dried form, through prayer, through smoke, not inhaling. But I will be working with his smoke, with us collectively. We will be working with him from his more jungle in South American form, known as mapacho. And he's so supportive in helping us purge and release that which is like, just right there and ripe for releasing. This is about creating space and how we experience. Experience. A purge can vary. Purges can feel really intense.
They can be experienced softly and gently and kind of like fluffing off layer by layer. And anytime that we work with any medicine, whatever the medicine is, whether the medicine is yoga, a plant consciousness, or singing, our intention and what is in our highest and best is what's called forth. And that's a. That's an aspect about trusting our experience. And these sacred spaces, like this retreat is not separate from our life.
It's just a dedicated container where we get to dedicate this time and energy and focus into deepening our relationship within ourselves and strengthening the tools that we have access to. That's what this space is for. It's about supporting your life. This is about, you know, it's. It's the space of your life, of processing your life.
But also, just like this moment in this experience is going to help me in some future moment, and I'm gifting myself this experience for my future self, for my now, in my future self. Because when something shows up at some point in the future, I will have tended to this place within me so that I can experience that differently, so that I can remember that I have this tool. I can call on the spirit of tobacco. Whether you have tobacco physically or not, you can call on the spirit of tobacco.
You can call on your ally of shame. You can sit the earth and be still. You can close your eyes and feel your body. You can use your voice and ask for help. This is about cultivating more of you, more of you in your life. Doesn't that sound delicious? Like, more of you. More, please. Like, I just keep the. I get this image of, like, here's this beautiful plate of food and there's just like, more nutrition. I don't know, maybe that sounds weird, but there's just, like, more available.
¶ Exploring the Essence of Healing with Nature's Allies
And not only are we going to be working with tobacco, but we Are working also with Lavender and Passion Flower now. These two divine spirits. Passion Flower is. Is my homegirl. It's the first plant that I fell in love with when I was in Chinese medicine school. And it just. She just showed up. And the. The medicine with Passion Flower is like, her capacity to soothe and turn. Imagine, like, something just slowly. Like, the ground is just, like, slowly unearthing itself.
Just turning ever so gently but steadily and soft. Like Passion Flower does. This supports this with our nervous system and being able to unearth and turn and, like, bring to the surface so that the energy gets to breathe and move. So she has this capacity to do that with our nervous system in this really beautiful, gentle way. And for me, it's like this invitation I can't refuse.
Like, my personal work with Passion Flower has been the experience of being able to tend to things that have felt really scary for me in a way that was just like, not scary. Just like, oh, wow, I can do this, and I can have this conversation. I can make this call in such a way that's like, there's just, like, this freedom, energy. And it's as simple as, let me move this pen from point A to point B. Like, there's an aspect of Passion Flowers medicine that takes out the charge.
¶ The Power of Passion Flower and Lavender
It's miraculous. And lavender. Lavender is here in this space because she has really strong energy rooted in boundaries. And, like, these are. These are the boundaries. No fluff, no explanation. Just, I can. I can support deep relaxation. And what's required is very clear boundary. Because, I mean, how many of us are familiar with lavender and lavender so soothing and relaxing?
I mean, like, lavender is in so many products and is very well known, and she has this energy that is also very relaxing to our nervous systems. Very calming essence. When we work with her in this intentional way with the consciousness, like, we're intentionally working with her consciousness. There's an element of her energy that is no bullshit. And it's kind of like this. Like, if she were to speak, she would say, in order to ride this ride, in order to.
To really experience this deep inner relaxation of peace, then I'm not taking this shit. And this shit is like this, like, the shit within ourselves. Like, she's like, I'm not gonna bypass any inner. So if you want to ride this ride, if you want to receive this experience, you're gonna have to call out your own inner. And that's it. So how we're going to work with these plants is in right relation, is intentional conscious relationship. And we call upon. And as each Individual woman.
We get to invite the spirit of this plant into our space. That is our choice. And the plant itself gets to make that choice as well. It's an invitation from both sides. This isn't like, hey, you gotta do this. Everything in this experience, including I work with plants, is an invitation. And as individuals, we invite the experience in. We are saying yes to the experience. So what that looks like is having space to invite in and working within our own pace and trusting ourselves.
And the really beautiful thing about working with plants and working with our body and working with, you know, nature is that we can all have access. These are all allies. Our body is our ally. These plants are our allies. The earth is our ally. And so the intention is that you create relationship. These are not relationships that anybody can take from you. You might be thinking, well, what if I don't have access to something?
You can always call on the spirit, on the consciousness of the earth, of any of your plant allies. And then they become friends, they become tools, helpers in your journey. This is about solidifying relations for you to support you in your journey that are not about you needing to acquire more in your life. And this beautiful body that you have, I'll close in this. This aspect of the retreat is. Will be diving more into our own touch and the touch of our own movement.
So there's the physical touch of having the space to actually just like touch ourselves. And what feels good, like grazing fingers, cross our cheeks, slowly taking our hair and letting it just like tickle across our shoulder, just like touching the bottom and the soles of our feet, holding our with our hands, just like holding our presence there, like whatever space that we need in our own touch.
Like, when was the last time you just touched your own body without an intention, without a purpose, without some outcome, just because it felt good.
¶ Exploring the Touch of Movement and Embodiment
And then there's the touch of movement. What I mean by that is there's lots of space in this particular retreat for embodiment and moving our body. And how, like how we need to move, not how we think we're supposed to move, not how we think looks good in movement. Like how. How do we need to move to touch, to engage, to be present with parts of ourselves? Because our body is literally housing all this energy.
In some places it's freed up and energy is flowing and loving and warm and expansive and vibrant. And then there's other parts of our body that is congested with this repressed shame, unresolved emotions, traumas. And it's tight and it's achy and it's tense and it's limited and it's bloated and it's swollen and it's dry and it's. Whatever it is. And so as we're moving and we're embodying, we're literally.
Remember that moment in the beginning where I invited you to close your eyes and imagine as if inside of you was like pressing on these parts of your body. Like, this embodiment is about literally, like, touching someplace that's felt really tender. And we get to just, like, stretch and we get to touch that part. We just get to touch it and be present in the feel. So there's this touch through our literal physical movement where we're kissing, touching.
We're feeling in an intentional space that is inviting us to lean in to what we consider ugly, what we consider not great, not good enough, whatever the story is. And that's what's important, is having an intentional space that we get to lean in and touch and be with these parts of ourselves that we've abandoned, and having a container of intentionality and of safety to do that.
Because I'm going to share something that is at a root here and is something that is super important for me personally, being a cultivator of these experiences, is that my greatest commitment is to experience the truth of life, that everything is welcome, and I'm committed to that and who. There are some scary spaces in there. There's some really yummy, beautiful spaces, because this world is constantly in judgment of what is right and wrong.
And I really believe that the ultimate truth is that that doesn't exist. There is no right or wrong. There is only experience. And so my commitment is a space of acceptance. And the disclaimer is that I'm also human as well. And so when there's fumbling, we get to come together and work things out, and we get to discover together. And we are in this together, in this journey, leaning in and allowing. Allowing ourselves to discover and accept the rightness of it all.
