Speaker 1 (01:03):
When I think of the word Zen, I think of being present.
New Speaker (01:08):
Well, our dogs are masters at being present. I'm constantly learning from Gina. How to be present.
New Speaker (01:17):
Agility has taught me, has actually forced me, to be present because you have to be focused on exactly where you are when you're running your dog in the agility ring. As soon as my mind goes to what happened just behind me, did she knock the bar? She goes off course because my mind in a nanosecond, she'll pick it up and sense that I'm not present and things fall apart.
New Speaker (01:43):
So it's been a wonderful teacher to be present. I've also learned when I'm training her a new trick or a new behavior to really only train one thing at a time. It's really not fair to her for me to try and mix it up and add a couple of things at once before she's got the first thing down.
New Speaker (02:04):
And I remember when we used to struggle with, I used to struggle with getting her to tug, which is just mind boggling to me now that it took me over a year to really get her to tug anywhere we are. Because she is now a tug a monster. It's one of the things we do constantly and agility. It's a stress reliever, it is distractor so that she stays focused on me more than all the stimulation all around her. And she just loves to tug.
New Speaker (02:38):
But it's really important that when I was teaching her to tug that I don't ask her to do other things at the same time. Now it's one thing, once they've mastered that behavior, once she has a very reliable recall. And once she had mastered that I can ask her to come to me. I say, G, here in a high pitch voice to get her attention, she comes running.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
It's perfectly fine for me to ask her to do another behavior on the way I can say G here. And then when she's running to me, say down and she's she's down on the floor, or I could refer in the agility field. I can say left tunnel. If I want her to go left and take the tunnel. But those are behaviors that I've taught one at a time.
New Speaker (03:25):
So I hope you find that useful. Onto the music.
New Speaker (03:28):
CPE Bach, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach, was one of the many sons of J S Bach, the famous Johann, Sebastian Bach, and also one of the many famous composer sons of him. This is a beautiful melody. I hope you're a cuddled up with your dog at home listening. Give him a kiss, give her a kiss for me and enjoy this music together. Thank you.
