Eclipse - Season 1 | Episode 7 - When Demon Cursed Them with Eclipse

Thinking about what associations he could have with eclipse – the phenomenon he was about to describe, he felt uncertain. Has he ever seen it? Not really… Hmm… He saw one eclipse, the only in his life, that was few months ago, oh wait, he’s got the specific date – 2 months, 18 days, 12 hours, 45 minutes… That’s from the smoking-cessation app counter. He quit that day. Why did he choose that day or why quit at all? Hard to say. It was just one day, end of July, him feeling too down and depressed and he thought, ok – how much more lower can it go – so he quit. Strange to realize that despite thinking he had nothing to remember about eclipses – there it was, in front of hum, the most recent one…

Of course it was not the solar eclipse when the sun was disappearing from the sight of some ancient locals, causing panic, chaos, fear and despair… The one he witnessed was a lunar eclipse.

So what, he thought… Why does that matter. He refused to signify the event or give it any meaning or power or make it a cause for something. Yet, yes, that specific period he actually started to feel his life resembling very much the eclipse phenomenon.

It’s from Greek – eklipsis – he learned – abandoning, failing, omission – this is what he felt now.

There he was, living, loving, smiling, crying, eating, playing, working and still he was not there – part of him was gone – he lost himself and he hoped now it was not a loss, it was just an eclipse… Perhaps, just like during those ancient times, the 8 minutes without the sun did seem so much for the people, there he was perhaps to endure some 8 months, he hoped when he could see the sun, himself, his love – all back – shining, smiling – big bright yellow sun back.

Until then, there was the darkness, – grey, silent, awkward, absolute cessation of everything – feeling nothing, but keeping the hope that it will be minutes only, weeks, months, and hopefully not years, when the cycle will turn to him again and he’ll be happy – rising again.

He saw that image of Kala Rauh, called Rahu in India – the Balinese demon. Perhaps the demon followed them all the way from Denpasar, or Ubud, or Amed, or perhaps, and that’s the most probable, he thought, the demon was angry, because they only went halfway on the stairs of the ascent to Lempuyang – he felt so much energy, so much joy when they were climbing up… Strangely, not many tourists, and then, they realized, it will get dark soon, and they remembered the warning sign to avoid the jungle in the dark, and there was the driver waiting down there to pick them up back to Amed. And his love was so tired – and they decided to turn back… And headed down the stairs… And perhaps another hour or so in descent… They never talked of that turning back as a defeat, but it certainly felt like that for him, – yes, that’s when Kala Rauh perhaps cursed them with the eclipse – and that’s when they made the mistake…
