We Don't Have to Be This Angry About Everything All of the Time

I check social media at least a few times a day as my blog posts appear there and I like to reply promptly to comments or questions. There are posts from a few friends (past and present) that I always stop to read. They are usually uplifting, inspiring or ask thoughtful questions without judgment or condemnation. I enjoy photos of adorable children and pets, as well as outdoor scenes that remind me of the beauty of nature. The posts that I only scan seem to be from angry people. Not activists wh...

On Being Falsely Accused

U.S. Supreme Court, February 2, 2020 What does it feel like to be falsely accused? I know my first reaction is defensiveness. How do I correct the wrong? How do I explain away a misunderstanding of words? And what if the accusation is intentionally false to create chaos and cast doubt? My “human” reaction never seems to defuse the situation, but instead to inflame it. I watch the national stage and I see the same: the heat of the fire just gets stronger until judgment is delivered. But how can I...

Creating Chaos

Tornado, photo from National Geographic I’ve known narcissists in my life so it is easy for me to recognize the signs. They create a general state of disorder, spreading drama that they love to start. And then they take command as “savior” to solve the issue they just created. They engage in behaviors to satisfy their need to feel superior and a desire to stand out among others, or even better, to occupy a position above them. Every problem is a “huge” problem that is only solved with lots of dr...

Idiot Strings

I gave a docent tour at the Frist Art Museum this past Sunday of our current exhibition: Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists. It is a beautiful exhibition curated by the Minneapolis Institute of Art which will travel to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC and the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK after it closes here in Nashville next weekend. One piece stood out this past Sunday: Idiot Strings: The Things We Carry by Sonya Kelliher-Combs an Athabascan and Inupiat artist from Alaska. It is a se...

Medicare For Me

Last week was a wonderful week with well-wishes from old and new friends for my 65th birthday. It was good to see old and new friends at a pharmacy meeting last week and then reconnect with old friends via email and Facebook, some dating back to my high school days!! I admit that a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders last week. Turning 65 means being eligible for Medicare. Although I’m still working and have health insurance, I also have a history of breast cancer, a “pre-existing condition...

My Last Camino Day- Freedom

Catedral de Santiago de Compostela I learned a lot about myself as I walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain last month. Ten-hour hikes, often alone, gave me plenty of time to think, sort things out and do some analysis of my life. I tried not to scrutinize past occurrences. It doesn’t do any good to replay negative events over and over, hoping that the outcomes will change or finding something new to blame. But it is a unique history that belongs only to me that I never want to deny. In thinking...
