The Incident
On the evening of August 23, 1989, Yusuf Hawkins and three friends traveled to the predominantly white neighborhood of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. They intended to inquire about a used car advertised for sale. Unbeknownst to them, their arrival coincided with rumors that a Black teenager was dating a local white girl, leading to a racially charged atmosphere.
As Hawkins and his friends walked through the neighborhood, they were confronted by a group of young white men. The confrontation escalated quickly, and Hawkins was fatally shot. His death was not only a personal tragedy but also a stark reminder of the pervasive racial tensions in New York City.
