Episode description

The merchant brigantine known as the Mary Celeste was originally called Amazon. In 1868, it was acquired and given the new name Mary Celeste. Prior to this change, the Amazon had a reputation as a cursed vessel due to the tragic events it had experienced, including the death of a captain and the collision of another ship.

Additionally, the Amazon had been grounded during a storm, leading to its abandonment. After being purchased multiple times, the ship was eventually acquired by a group led by James Winchester and Benjamin Spooner Briggs. These individuals repaired the vessel, made necessary modifications, and rechristened it as the Mary Celeste.
