Hey guys, welcome to Mother Knows Death. I wanted to hop on for a solo breaking news episode to discuss the sudden passing of the NHL star Johnny Gudreau. For those unfamiliar, Johnny Gudreau is this superstar NHL player. He had been in the NHL for over eleven years. He played with the Calgary Flames for about nine years and then within the last two years had signed this mega contract with the Columbus Blue Jacket. So he was about

to go into the second year with that team. And this morning, my husband and I were, you know, just driving around and I saw on Instagram that they posted about the sudden and tragic passing of Johnny. So I immediately had to look into it because, you know, as as people that watch talk you all the time, I'm very familiar with this name, and I know what a big deal he is in the sport. And of course, you know, anytime an athlete dies is a major story.

But this story just keeps getting worse as more and more information keeps coming out about it. So last night, he and his brother Matthew were riding bikes on this backcountry road and as you know, most drivers would do that. See bikers on the side of the road, they like move over a little bit so that you can give them room. And these other drivers are in the middle, and then this guy in a jeep Grand Cherokee comes

up behind them just being impatient. So this driver thinks he can go around these other cars, is not paying attention to his surroundings at all, eventually goes around them and then hits both of the brothers on their bikes. As of this recording, the driver whose name is Sean Higgins. He is forty three years old. He has been charged with two counts of death by auto. At the time of the accident, the troopers suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol. I mean, we talked about drunk

driving incidents a lot on the show. Most recently we're talking about the multiple duys with Patrick Mahomes dad and how we don't think the punishment is necessarily sick you enough for people to not even try to risk doing it,

and it just makes us even more infuriating. I mean, these guys were with all of their family, They were there to celebrate this awesome day with their sister, and now this day has turned into this absolute tragedy, and it was a preventable death, all because this guy couldn't, you know, just call an uber or just have some decency to not get in his car and drive drunk.

So obviously the family has canceled the wedding. It's just absolutely horrific, and when I was reading about it this morning, the whole thing just made me feel sick to my stomach, thinking, you know, I'm thinking about the parents, that this is a special day for parents too, when you know your child is getting married and now you've had two of your children taken from this world for absolutely no reason at all. And I also can't help but think about,

you know, if you're a grosser. Remember we wrote about matis Ka Lennox a couple of months ago and his tragic passing from getting struck with fireworks on the fourth of July. He was also on the Columbus Blue Jackets. And I feel like it's kind of this like curse they have at this point. You have these two awesome players that get killed in these freak accidents. It's just

so unfortunate to think about. And my husband, being an NHL super fan as well, he was telling me, how you know this guy was really beloved by the hockey community, the sports community. He's best friends with some other huge hockey players, and most notably, he had gone to Boston College with another hockey player, Kevin Hayes him, so Johnny, Kevin, and Kevin's brother Jimmy were all really close friends as well. And you know, Jimmy Hayes unfortunately passed away in twenty

twenty one. So I feel really horrible for the Gaudreau family and all of this and all their loved ones. I mean, Johnny left behind a wife and a couple kids, and his brother Matthew also left behind a wife. And I'm also thinking about Kevin Hayes, who tragically lost his brother a few years ago and now has lost one of his best friends. I mean, this is just an

absolute horrible thing that happened to the hockey community. It's really sad, especially right before this season is about to start, and I can't possibly imagine what this family is going through and what they're feeling. I mean, this is just such a horrible scenario. So thank you guys for tuning into this breaking news episode. We wanted to. We didn't want to wait the full week to talk about it because this is such a big story today, but we definitely wanted to bring it up and let you guys

know what happened. And next week on our regular news episode, we're gonna be providing any updates we have about the driver, what happened, and everything like that.
