¶ Introducing Step Right Up Game Show
Step Right Up is our Friday game show on Morning North in the summer. A trivia quiz with a twist. We want to relive the thrill of the carnival. Imagine it. The roller coasters. The bumper cars. The cotton candy. The funnel cake. That ice-cold lemonade. And the games. The dart game. Pop a balloon. Win a prize. The milk ball.
Bottle baseball toss in the duck pond. We're turning some of those classic carnival games into a trivia quiz, and we've got CBC prizes up for grabs. Lanyards and buttons and ball caps and T-shirts and water bottles and mugs. Win a game, you win a prize. In one of the games, you can win multiple prizes. And at the end of it all, we'll let you spin the big wheel where everyone's a winner. So step right up and get ready to play.
We're going to get this show on the road. It's Step Right Up on Morning North.
¶ Meet Our First Contestant Gilles
have a listener that's willing to step right up. It's Jill in Chelmsford. Good morning. Good morning. How are you doing? Well, I'll tell you later after I play the game. Oh, that's okay, Jill. That's not a problem. It's going to be an easy, easy game. So, Jill, what's your story? What do you do? Oh, I'm retired and been retired for several years now. All right. And so how do you spend your summers in your retirement?
Actually, well, we cater to the grandkids an awful lot. Which means doing what? Camping fishing. Fishing? Camping fishing, yeah. And where do you take them? Oh, we go up north in the Shining Tree area. You have your own camp there or just provincial land? No, we usually rent a cabin there and go with the grandkids and, you know. Enjoy it. How old are the grandkids now? One just turned 13 and the other one just turned 10. All right. So still interested in the fishing? A little bit, yeah.
Do they bring their video games with them? Oh, definitely. Do they, yeah. I guess you can't get away from that these days. So what's the biggest fish you ever caught, Gilles? Well, we caught a nine-pound... Walleye, pickerel if you want. That's pretty big. All right. Yeah. What about taking the kids to the carnival? Do you ever do that?
No, I don't know if that exists very much around here anyway. Yeah, not very often. It sort of comes and goes. But did you ever go when you were younger? Yeah, I remember doing that quite a bit, yeah. Did you go to the rides or play the games? Oh, pretty much everything, yeah. And did you ever win anything on the games? I don't remember winning anything. Because they're rigged, aren't they? Yeah. Probably. And what about the rides? Did you have a favorite ride?
I had a Ferris wheel, I believe. You know, it could get a bird's eye view of the area. That's kind of fun, for sure. All right. Are you ready to play our carnival games on the radio? Oh, yeah.
¶ Play Whack-A-Mole Canada Trivia
Alright, well let's step right up. We're going to start with the radio version of Whack-A-Mole. Let's play Whack-A-Mole. Now, you should know how this game works. You whack on the mole as many times as you can. It's sort of hit and miss. So on the radio, it's true or false. And Canada Day is coming up, so I've got a few questions about Canada. If you can get three out of five right, you win a nice red and white CBC pen. Very patriotic. You're ready to go.
All righty. True or false? Gilles, the national animal of Canada is the moose. Is that true or false? I'm going to say false. You're right. It's the beaver. Number two, Canada has more coastline than all other countries combined. True or false? I'm going to say true. That is true. Get one more and you win the pen. Quebec City is the only walled city north of Mexico. True or false? I'm going to go with true.
You're perfect. You got three right. Our other questions were, poutine originated in Vancouver. Do you think it did? No. No, it didn't. Of course not. It's from Quebec. And then the last one was sort of a gimme. Manitoulin Island. Largest freshwater island in the world. True or false? You know the answer to that one? true yeah that is true absolutely all right so uh you got three right so jill you win a cbc pen i'm sure you're excited
¶ Play Balloon Dart Sports Trivia
But we've got other prizes for you. We've got another game to play. This is a classic. It's the balloon dart game. So the concept is simple. You throw a dart at the target. You hit a balloon or you don't. And in this game, we're going to give you two answers. You have to hit the target right. You've got to get, again, three out of five for the win. And the prize is incredible. It is a CBC...
Bork, a combination fork and spoon. It's red and white, just like the pen. So the topic is sports. I'm going to give you... Two teams. You tell me which of the two teams has won more championships. We're starting with hockey. Toronto Maple Leafs or Montreal Canadiens, who's won more championships? Oh, definitely Montreal. That's right. They've won 23 Stanley Cups, the Leafs 13. All right. Next one's from the Professional Women's Hockey League.
Ottawa Charge or Minnesota Frost, who's won more Walter Cups? I'm going to say Minnesota. That's right. They've won the only two Walter Cups we've had. Mind you, Ottawa was in the finals this year, but Minnesota's won them both. So you've got two so far. You need to get one more right to win the Spork. Toronto Argonauts, we're talking CFL football now, or Edmonton Elks, including when they were the Edmonton Eskimos. Who's won more Grey Cups? Ah, that's a tough one. I'll go with Toronto. Bye.
You're right. They've won 19 and the Elks have won 14. Do you follow baseball? You've got it perfect. You've been perfect so far, Jill. You know your sports too. The next question was about the Blue Jays. Blue Jays or Chicago Cubs? Any idea who've won the More World Series?
I'd have to go with Chicago. Yeah, they only won three, but the Blue Jays have won two. And then my final question was about my favourite team, the Toronto Raptors. Raptors or Vancouver Grizzlies? Who've won more championships? Well, definitely Raptors. Yeah, they've won one, but the Grizzlies, they've never won any. So, all right. Anyways, you got your three out of five. You win a CBC Sport.
¶ Water Pistol Race & Final Prizes
Okay, we've got one more game for you. It is the water pistol race. This is where you fire a stream of water into a target. And if you get to the end, you win a prize. In the radio version, we've got a stream of trivia questions for you. For every three questions answered correctly, you win a prize. And the prizes get better as you get closer to the end.
Three questions right, you win a water bottle, three more, a ball cap, and if you get all nine right, you also win a CBC mug. You just get more and more and more. Are you ready? Wow. No, I'm ready. On your mark, get set. Here we go. So what is the capital city of Manitoba? I'm sorry, it's Winnipeg. Winnipeg. Now, what's the name of the bear named after Winnipeg that was the subject of a children's book by A.A. Milne? Winnie the Poop.
Now, what is Winnie the Pooh's favorite food? I believe it's honey. It is honey. Two right. If you get the third right, you win a prize. What do you call the bee responsible for laying all the eggs in a honeybee hive? The queen bee. That's right, and that means you win a water bottle. Three more and you can win another prize. We're moving on. What's the name of the Queen song that features a lengthy operatic section and it became quite popular?
particularly because of the movie Wayne's World. Not good at that one. Bohemian Rhapsody. There are no hints. I'm sorry, Jill. No hints. Bohemian Rhapsody was the answer. So what color is the famous Rhapsody composed by George Gershwin? Rhapsody in Red. No, it's Rhapsody in blue. Sorry about that. What social media platform now owned by Elon Musk used to feature a logo of a blue bird? Think of a sound a bird makes. I don't know. Balloon? Twitter is the answer.
Twitter. Twitter. True or false? Birds only Twitter when they're trying to attract a mate. I'm sorry, that's false. They just Twitter all the time. Last question. What is the legal term for making a deliberately false statement under oath? There you go, Jack. Sorry, time's up. That's perjury, but you know what? you got three right and that means you win a cbc water bottle you did not get the ball cap or the mug but before we let you go
We can take one spin of the big wheel. Maybe you can win another prize, a tote bag, I don't know, a button. Anything you're hoping for, Gilles? Umbrella. A CBC umbrella would be secondhand because we've only got one. But we're going to give the wheel a spin. Let's go for it. Roger, spin the wheel. There he goes. Round and round she goes. Where she stops, nobody. Here comes it.
There's an umbrella up there. Another water bottle. There's a mug. A t-shirt. A button. And... Hey! It's a CBC ball cap. Way to go! You've won a wall cap and a water bottle. You've got a spork in the CBC pen. What are you going to do this weekend, Jill? Well, I think it's going to clear up.
Hopefully, well, we'll have to find out if the grandkids want to go somewhere first. All right. And then go from there. Well, have a great one. I really appreciate you calling and playing Step Right Up. Have a great weekend. Thank you very much. Take care. Bye-bye. That was Jill in Chelmsford. He's our winner this week on Step Right Up, and we're going to do it all again next week. We're going to step right up again. Bye. For more CBC podcasts, go to cbc.ca slash podcasts.
