¶ Intro / Opening
Ten years ago, I asked my partner, Kelsey, if she would marry me. I did that despite the fact that every living member of my family who had ever been married had also gotten divorced. Forever is a Long Time is a five-part series in which I talk to those relatives about why they got divorced and why they got married. You can listen to it now on CBC's Personally.

¶ Meeting Contestant Chris from Kagawong
All right, we've got a listener stepping right up to the radio now. Good morning. What's your name and where are you calling from? Hi, can you hear me okay? Sure can. Who is this? Okay, so my name is Chris. I live in Kagawang. Hey, Chris, how's it going? Going very well. Beautiful Friday morning. Beautiful Friday morning. Sure is sunny here in Sudbury. Sunny on the island? Yep, also sunny here. Excellent. And what's life been like in Kagawan this week? Oh, it's been excellent.
Yeah. What have you done? We're getting a lot of tourists coming in and enjoying the Brideville Falls here in Caggill, one of the big attractions. All right. And what have you been doing this week? Well, I'm a teacher, so I've just been going into school and wrapping up the school year with the last things to do. Well, the school's out last week, isn't it? Like, what do you have to do this week? Oh, well, I'm a guidance counselor, so...
At the high school, students sometimes pass or they sometimes fail, and then we have to make adjustments for September. Then there's a few things to wrap up that way to make sure that marks get off to colleges and universities properly, that kind of thing. All right. Is there summer school on the island? There is actually some summer school. There sometimes isn't, but there's a grade 10 civics and careers class that's running through the month of July at the school. Whereabouts?
It's at Manage School and Secondary School. All right. Okay. So just a grade 10, one civics class. Why would that only be offered? Well, it's just one of the most general classes that students can take, and students that are coming in for grade 9 can even take it, even though it's a grade 10 class, they can jump ahead. So it's one of the most diverse.
classes that students can take. And there's also online classes that students can take too, so a whole variety of those. Okay. Would it be just to get the credits so you graduate, or why would someone want to take that class? Well, for some students, it's just to jump ahead and get ahead on things, too. So a lot of keen students will take it, but some students also will take it because they failed something else, and so that helps them get caught up overall.
All right. And so how was this year compared to previous as a guidance counselor, Chris, on the island? This year? Yeah. I'm going to say it was a pretty good year overall. I mean, we have a great school. Manitoulin is a great school because there's... I'm going to say maybe a third of the staff actually went to the school, and some of them even had their parents who were teachers of the school. So there's a lot of family tradition, and so people really care about it.
the community of the island. Yeah. We had a student who won a big scholarship. I forget her name, but her dad teaches at the school as well. And that's pretty exciting news for Manitoulin secondary, isn't it? Oh, yeah. Alex Wilson's Eagle, yes, she just won the TV scholarship. Yep, she's great. All right. Well, let us play this step right up. You ever get the carnival coming to Manitoulin? Does the fair ever get there?
Well, we have the Providence Bay Fair, which is something like that, yeah. Yeah, and do you ever play some of the games? Sometimes, I'm going to say, yeah. Sometimes? Do you ever win anything? I don't think I actually have one anything in a car on the table. Well, you are about to, Chris, I am sure, because it's time to step right up.
¶ Playing Carnival Trivia Games
And we are going to start with the radio version of Whack-A-Mole. Let's play Whack-A-Mole. You know how this works. You whack the mole on the head as many times as you can. It's a hit or miss game. Our version is true or false. So today is Independence Day in the U.S., July the 4th. These first questions are all about the United States. If you get three out of five correct, you will win a CBC lanyard. Are you ready to go?
Okay, I'm ready. Okay. True or false, the national mammal of the United States is the American bison. True. It is true. And the national bird, of course, is the bald eagle. You got one right. Next question. The capital of the United States is New York City. Ooh, false. That is correct. It is Washington, D.C. And if you get the next one right, you need three out of five right. Number three, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from Spain. Ooh, false.
It was a gift from where? France. France. There you go. So you got three in a row. My last question was going to be, Canada is the 51st state. True or false? It is false. Okay, so you have won a CBC lanyard. Okay, we got another game to play for you. It's a classic. This is the Balloon Dart Game.
All right, the concept is simple. You throw a dart at the target. Either you hit a balloon or you don't. So in this game, we give you two answers. You try to hit the right target. Again, you need to get three out of five for the win. And this time we're going to give you the chance to win a CBC Spork. And to do with spork, the topic is food. I'm going to name two foods. You tell me which has more calories. Okay? Okay. Okay. Apple.
Or banana? Same weight. Which has more calories? I'm going to get banana. That is correct. Just slightly, the banana. Next one. A cup of skim milk or a cup of coffee? I'm going to say skim milk. You are right, yes. A cup of skim milk has 80 calories. Coffee can have zero calories, so there you go. A tablespoon of butter or a tablespoon of olive oil? Which has more calories? We got butter
No, it's olive oil. It has 120 calories. Butter has 100. You've still got two. You need one more for the win. Two more chances. Which has more calories, a cup of grapes or a cup of raisins? I'd say Raven. Yeah, because they're so condensed, right? Raisins, 400 calories. A cup of raisins, a cup of grapes has about 100 calories. So you got three out of five right. So you win a CBC Sport. We've got another game for you. It is the water pistol race.
So you fire a stream of water into the target. If you get to the end, you win a prize. And in the radio version, we've got a stream of trivia questions for you. And for every three questions you get correctly, you win. We'll win a prize, and the prizes get bigger and better as we get closer to the end. If you get three questions right, you're going to win a CBC water bottle. That's a pretty good prize, actually. Three more. We've got a ball cap for you. If you get all nine, you'll also...
win a CBC mug. You can win all three prizes. Are you ready? Oh yeah, okay. On your mark, get set, here we go. Now, squirt that water. Now, what major Canadian city hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics? Vancouver. All right, you're on a roll. True or false, the California roll was invented in Vancouver. I don't know. I'm going to say true.
It is true. It's an amazing story, but the California roll was invented in Vancouver. For a prize, what follows the words true north in the Canadian national anthem? Strong. Strong and free. There you go. You win a water bottle. Yay. And we continue on. We continue on with what is the... Common name for the element FE that is very strong and widely used metal. Iron. Iron is correct. Next question. What's the name of the genius billionaire Marvel character who created Iron Man? Tony Stark.
And a Tony Award is given for excellence in what? I think it's acting or on stage at musicals. You need to be more specific. Where would that be? Like Broadway? That's right. Live Broadway Theatre. So you've won another prize. You've won the ball cap along with the water bottle. And you've only got three more questions next. You could be the first person to get the mug. Here we go. Question number seven. What 2015...
a Broadway musical featured rap and hip-hop music. It was about an American founding father. Hamilton. What's the name of the CFL team based in Hamilton? Ooh, the Tiger Cats. And for the mug, what cartoon cat loves lasagna? Carfield. That's right. You've won the water bottle, the ball cap, and you've won the CBC mug.
¶ Winning Prizes and Summer Plans
Well, before we let you go, we're going to spin that wheel for your chance to win one more prize. Is there anything else you're hoping for, Chris? Gosh, I don't know. Maybe a T-shirt? T-shirt? Well, we can spin the wheel. Let's let her rip. Round and round she goes. Where she stops, nobody knows. There's a tote bag. There's the CBC car. Just missed it. And it's... Yes! A t-shirt! You bought the CBC t-shirt?
I'm not sure what size we have, but it's a carnival. You get what you get. Roger says small or medium. That's all we've got. So that's what's going to happen. And you get a water bottle and a ball cap. That's awesome. What else did you get? You want a spork and a lanyard? Yeah, you got all sorts of CBC prizes. So, Chris, what are you going to do this summer? Now you're off, right? Well, yeah, today will be like the last day of work. After that, we're going to relax.
on Manitoulin. It's a wonderful place to be in the summer. Yeah, you're not going to leave the island at all? Well, my wife and I do camping. We go around to the various Ontario parks. So I'll use the spork for the camping time. Excellent. Enjoy the spork. Have a great summer. Thanks so much for playing Step Right Up. Awesome. Thanks for having me. Bye-bye now. Okay, bye. That was Chris from Kagawan on Manitoulin Island. He was our winner this week on Step Right Up.
