So what do you think are the key skills that every coach should have ?
I think one of the biggest ones , for me at least , is empathy is being able to really understand the person that you're trying to coach . A lot of times we'll want to jump in and just give them steps and tips and we don't take the time to really understand where they're coming from , and I think that empathy really helps you do that .
It puts the fear , or maybe the responsibility of giving people answers and really helps you understand , understand the other person , understand their struggles and really connect with them .
Yeah , and on that topic , before I share mine , I really do like the idea of empathy , because you're not just rushing to judgment .
You're asking them questions to find out why they're feeling the way that they're feeling right now and making sure that they understand there's no right or wrong feelings , this is the way they feel , but like kind of meeting them there , right . Empathy doesn't mean that you're agreeing with them .
Empathy just means that you can see it from their perspective and when you can see it and you can call out to it and they're like , wow , like this person really gets it , it opens the door to at some point . If they do want you to give advice , you can , but it's not something you just rush and just give advice .
I mean , I'm sure we've all experienced this I've experienced this this week where you rush in to give advice and even at home , and you're like , oh , I didn't have all that information right . It's because you didn't take a second to like slow down .

For me , the number one skill that I would ask every single coach to practice more often is listening , and one skill that I would ask every single coach to practice more often is listening , and basically it's very similar to what you said , and that is when you're having a conversation with somebody .
There's a difference between listening to respond versus listening and really to understand or to learn , right . And so you ask a question and you're not in your mind already formulating the next question or what you're going to say next .
You're not going to feel connected to that person , you're missing the whole point , and so instead it's actually just asking a question and listening , and even allowing for silence sometimes .
So if you ask a question and the person doesn't answer immediately , allow for silence , because that's them exploring their subconscious mind , right , which means it's the greatest opportunity to help them . If they had an instant answer , then maybe it wouldn't be something they'd need help with .
But if they're actually like having to slow down and to stop and to think about it , meet you , ask the powerful question and just wait . But then do a good job of listening , listen to what you hear . Obviously you can reflect back some of that , but don't come up with the questions before . Actually wait until you have all the information and then you can .
