¶ Growing Your Personal Brand With LinkedIn
Hey , hey , this is another one of my very informal , not edited episodes where I just felt inspired and wanted to share a quick but hopefully helpful insight with you . If we have not met before , I am Dana Snyder . This is usually a edited , produced podcast , but welcome to that episode , that's not . I am also the creator of the monthly giving mastermind .
If you are looking to build or refresh a monthly giving program , my next round will kick off in January and applications are open , so you can head to positive equation dot com backslash mastermind for more details on that .
So what I wanted to share with you today I am in the midst of working on a new keynote presentation , all about why your story is worthy to , not just your organization story but your personal stories that connect , why you're supporting , why you're passionate and working for the cause , the organization that you are , and I know it's been said time and time again
that people give to people , and our entire nonprofit sector is fueled by building relationships and telling stories . Your stories are the ones that connect us to each other , that we find common ground , where we talk about nostalgic moments that we can relate to , right we , and we can tell these stories in lots of different mediums .
This podcast is one , and I also happen and what I'm going to share today . I happen to love LinkedIn , the LinkedIn platform , and I tell a lot of my stories there and from that I book 99% of my podcast cast through LinkedIn and get inbound requests for speaking opportunity opportunities there .
I talk about my monthly giving masterminds so people apply through there and , as I was doing some research on LinkedIn on my profile , going into this keynote presentation , I have nearly 7,000 followers and have generated 70,000 impressions in the last 90 days . Now am I viral ?
No sure , but my presence is generating the reaction that I want to grow and scale my business . So I wanted to share my strategy of like how have I acquired 70,000 impressions ? I mean , I think that's good , I think that's like decent .
It seems like there's engagement and conversation on things that I'm publishing and so I wanted to share , like if you are wanting to get started on LinkedIn or you're wanting to like , crank up the engagement and the impressions and reach of your content , maybe this is the way you can do that . So what's my strategy ? Drum moral I have no strategy .
I have no specific posting cadence . I have no secret to using images or not using images . I have no rhyme or reason for the length of my content and the reason for this ? I mean should I ? Maybe ?
My life is a beautiful blur right now working part time , three days a week , watching my six month old weaning from breastfeeding , going to physical therapy because , hello , 52 hour labor and I am sure in some way you can relate to that and just overall being busy , whatever that looks like in your world .
Whatever that to do list is , tanya Bhattacharya is a great LinkedIn expert and she says it the best that she teaches this lazy LinkedIn approach , so go follow her . She's incredible .
So , however , when I saw although I have no strategy when I saw this 70,000 impressions number , 90 days , I was like let me do a little digging and I thought I would share with you what's worked . So I want to .
I'll share with you what's worked , and then I also will provide you with five prompts that can get you started on LinkedIn , on really trying to grow your personal brand and thought leadership on LinkedIn and Astric . Here you can tell these stories , these prompts that I'm going to give you .
You can tell these stories anywhere , right , whatever medium on a podcast , on a stage , in a meeting , you name it . So what was interesting when I looked at my content was , 99.9% of the time , the ones that popped were when I was telling a story and Often being a little vulnerable , because those are relatable experiences .
And so what's been really interesting as I've been going into conferences and sharing a lot on LinkedIn is the conversations I have when I meet people at events are so much deeper now than hey , what do you do , where did you travel from ? Because I'm opening up at a level that I am comfortable with .
So I Realized I tend to put my content into a few different buckets on LinkedIn . The first bucket is celebration moments , whether this is a work highlight , an accolade . I , as an example , I recently shared a post that I was mentioned in an article by my or by BizTech magazine . It was an article . It was 30 nonprofit IT influencers to follow in 2023 .
I Directly shared the article link , so there was no image or anything . I just shared the article link and I tagged fellow colleagues in the article . So I literally just said my hook , if you want to call it , was incredibly honored to be amongst this stellar group of nonprofit professionals .
This line got me all in my feels , specifically bringing a human spark to technology . All of these individuals are savvy , insightful and have found ways to bring a human spark to technology , just to name a few , and I tagged people . Super short and simple , this got 50 plus likes , 15 comments and three reposts .
Okay , so that was the first one , so a celebration moment . The second bucket and I do a lot in this bucket is teaching through life experience , so this is kind of a fun one .
With Beyonce recently wrapping up her Renaissance tour , I remembered the time that I met her yes , I literally met her and I talked to her , and the post Started like this I I was in the room with Beyonce , jay-z , big Sean and Arianna Grande dot dot dot . Here's how my convo with Queen Bey went .
Then I used a little emoji arrow down and I continued through my story . The concept of this post was and the advice that I was sharing was around being bold .
This time of the year , as nonprofit marketers , we are sometimes intimidated to make the ask , and so I ended the post saying this tiny interaction gave me the fuel to be bold the rest of the night and has continued to fuel my sense of fearlessness to this day . Where do you feel yourself ? Holding back , going into giving season .
Where can you show up unexpectedly and basically saying who's a Beyonce figure that you felt too small to be seen by ? Be bold , take risks , make the invitation . This post got over 87 likes , 17 comments , one repost in nearly 5,000 impressions , so this one cultivated a lot of excitement and conversation . So I do a lot of teaching through life experience posts .
And then the third one is I kind of bucketed it as networking post and event . So if you are attending a conference or an event soon , or if you're at one and listening to this , every time I travel I try to make sure to take selfies or take photos or videos of the sessions or with the incredible people that I am meeting .
And I shared a post after leaving the NIO summit in Dallas and the post was super , super simple . I said the best part of conferences is all the selfies I get to take with incredible humans . I had discussions at dinner revolve around giving everyone access to clean water and I tagged charity water .
The difference of donor behavior in the US versus Canada had a segment and personalized the donor journey and stewardship and I did hand clap emojis . It's an honor working alongside each of you . And then I tagged all the people that were in the photos and then I had spoken with at the event .
This garnered 94 likes , 21 comments , one repost and almost 4,000 impressions , and I think what's great about these kind of posts is they said five different images . I give a shout out to everyone . It's really great for reconnecting after an event and building further relationships , to have the conversations continue .
So it's not just you met at a conference and nothing happens . And so those are my three like really main buckets , and within each of those I always try and tell a little bit of a story and based on and I'm like why does this work ? I did a little bit more digging and I read an article in entrepreneur with a recent interview with Dan Roth .
He is the editor in chief at LinkedIn and he wrote down how the LinkedIn algorithm works and they essentially evaluate content based off of relevance , expertise and engagement . So , how relevant is your content ? Is it relevant to your distinct audience ? Expertise is it showcasing your expertise in a specific subject area ?
And then an engagement Is there the presence of meaningful comments on your posts and they share that post ? That really shared knowledge and advice are now prioritized through the platform . So , simply put , posts do well by sharing a story , having an opinion and providing advice those three things .
So I want to leave you with some prompts , but before I do , I in this entrepreneur article there was a really funny example from the writer . He's the editor in chief of entrepreneur magazine and I just have to read you this post because I thought it was hilarious . So it ? First of all , let me just tell you the image , because that gives a context .
So he has this image that he had taken outside of a coffee shop and it's one of those like chalk signs that somebody had written , where normally you put like what's the coffee of the day , or the special of the day . This coffee shop wrote come in and try the worst coffee one woman on TripAdvisor had in her life .
And so his post starts with did someone insult or hurt you ?
¶ Engaging and Promoting on LinkedIn
Ask yourself this empowering question how can I use this ? And so he goes on . He shares this little story , he's having an opinion and he's providing advice . His post on LinkedIn has nearly 20,000 reactions , 831 comments and 532 reposts , right , so I just want to say I don't plan out , to be honest , a lot of my LinkedIn content .
It's the post that seemed to do well , that I am inspired to write at 7am or whatever time . It is based on a current situation that honestly seemed to do the best . Don't overthink it . Tell your story . If you're being a helpful resource and you're lifting others up , I promise you're going to see natural growth .
So , to get started , I want to leave you , as promised , with five prompts to help uncover some of your incredible stories and let the brainstorming begin . All right , if you have a piece of paper or on your app , you can write these down . Number one what's something that recently happened that you can brag about ? Now ?
I know this is probably the last one that you wanted to hear , but yes , brag about yourself . People want to uplift you and support you . Plus , it adds credibility . Number two what's the most nerve-wracking experience in your professional life and how do you feel about it now ? Right , this is kind of like my Beyonce moment .
Number three who are some of the people that bring joy to your work right now ? Publicly like , do the little at mention them and just say thanks , and how do they bring you joy ? Shout them out . Four are you heading to an event ? If so , post a quotable moment from a speaker .
Take selfies with fellow attendees that you enjoyed meeting them and tag them to shout out their incredible work and maybe something that you learned from them . And then , lastly , number five . This is one that I think is really important and really popular .
I mean kind of going back to what the editor-in-chief said about sharing a story , having an opinion , providing advice is number five , a step-by-step process to something . So think about what is something that you have become an expert at . Did you see amazing results from an email campaign ? You did an event ?
Did you launch a monthly giving program , et cetera , like share breakdown , how you did it . And then , once you've brainstormed , once you've posted all these things , make sure that you're engaging back with your community and responding . I always try and respond back to every single comment in a meaningful way that I get when somebody replies .
So , with that , if you want to see more of my non-strategy LinkedIn approach which maybe I guess there is a little but nothing solid search Dana Snyder on LinkedIn or click the link in the show notes and I would love to connect with you .
