Miami GP Welcome and Logistics

A

You are listening to Mist Apex Podcast. We live F1. Welcome to Mr. Apex Podcast. Today we're looking forward to the Miami Grand Prix after a long spring without Formula One. With so many updates and rules tweaks, it would be foolish to try and predict the outcome of the Grand Prix. Only a ragtag group of roguish Content creators and failed actors, radio presenters and journalists would do such a crazy thing. So let's predict the outcome of the Grand Prix.

I'm your host Richard Reddy, but my friends call me Spanners, so let's be friends as we produce an independent podcast produced in the podcasting shed with the kind support of our patrons and partners. We aim to bring you a race review before your Monday morning commute. We might be wrong. Bo eff ver. I'm joined in the Miami shed by Matt Trumpets. Hello Matt.

B

Hey there, Spanners. Uh you're looking very sunny for your usual time of day. For your England time of day,'cause you're now on my time. Welcome to the best time.

A

It is funny being on on this side of the pond and like catching certain things live and not having to deal with the fact that this is very late. So I will point out that this is a pre recorded Miami preview and We aren't gonna have a live stream for the Miami Grand Prix as well because it will be in the middle of the night for most people that are gonna be tuning in. But I am also really worried because I am gonna be lost.

Around the Miami Grand Prix racetrack without Christina Lee Mace. Tina, what am I gonna do without you?

C

You're actually gonna be even more confused this year, not just because I'm not there, but because they've renamed all of the zones.

A

And I c I couldn't find anything before.

C

They're they're not named after all the familiar places that you have come to know over the last two years. They've now been renamed according to neighborhoods in the Miami City. So um good luck to you especially,'cause very much a lot is not going to look familiar.

A

Oh no, I'm just gonna end up randomly like tagging onto Christina Lee Maced looking ladies and going, W you know where Tacos is? Please tell Spanners where Tacos is.

Special Liveries and Miami Activations

And who's gonna find me when I'm randomly lost and distracted by an activation? And speaking of activations, I think that's where we start. This is quite a kind of monaco of the US is how I've been describing it. A lot of the brands, a lot of the businesses want to come to Miami, which is why I think it's gonna be on the calendar forever. So who's doing something special for Miami? We've got a few special liveries and a lot of activations from the teams.

C

Absolutely, yes. The the one the one meme that I was overjoyed to wake up this morning and find was courtesy of Racing Bulls, who are going to have it looks like a yellow team kit to celebrate their summer flavor flavor flavor. I saw it in stores. I did not try it and I'm a little sad that I didn't because I could give you a great review of that flavor. But they're going to be doing yellow. We have Mercedes in purple.

And the fantastic meme that I'm sure a lot of people have seen, but I somehow doubt you guys have, is from the Minions movie. Are are you familiar with these creatures?

A

Yes, the minions. Yes, I am. I have children.

C

Mm-hmm. Little yellow, little purple, you put them side by side and you have a fantastic little meme there.

A

I'm just looking it up now. I have to say I was I'm really alarmed. Is the purple race suit that's not a joke? No, actually.

C

No.

A

They're actually wearing those purple ray suits.

C

I'm ninety percent certain yes they're actually wearing that purple.

A

That is the purple of ribena berries, and I don't think anyone suits that particular purple.

C

If you're gonna do purp purple in racing, it has to be deep, it has to be rich.

A

Uh

C

It shouldn't be whatever shade that is, that's kind of but not quite lilac.

A

Yeah, Mercedes Miami livery. I'm looking up now. You have to to look this up because it just

B

is the problem when you choose your colors based on animated film characters and not what actually looks good on human beings. Like I know there's like colors and there's like seasons and I do know if you try hard enough, you can pick a color that will work on almost nobody's skin tone. And that's what you're telling me they've done here?

A

Oh, have you not seen it, Matt? You've got to go look it up right now.

C

It's it's quite the sight. Um I am wondering if we're gonna be getting special fanware for it? Like is there going to be merch in that purple? Because that's the port where part where I'm gonna kinda draw the line and go, Well, it's one thing to make the drivers wear this. It's another to ask fans to spend money on it.

A

But that's why it's become it's become such a uh a moneymaker, hasn't it, c to go and get that special livery? So I was speaking to people on the plane who were into their art and fashion, and so when Vegart Carb did their slorn livery last year, where you had the artists like doodle type

art on the V Carb shirt, you know, people were running to go and get that. Now it's a cool shirt, I have one as well, but it's not that different from the original. So people were really motivated to go and get it. And I think there are people who go out and hunt.

for the special liveries. I think was it last year at Silverston, Hamilton did that red and yellow cap, which when I first saw it, I went, Oh, that's disgusting. It's gross. And then I spent the next couple of months going, but I could buy it. Like it is actually quite a cool cap. Am I gonna feel the same about the lilac

The ri Ribina berries. Maybe it'll come to tom you know, maybe I'll see it on track and out and about in the paddock and I'll go, Oh my god, I need to also look like a Ribina Berry.

C

You need to be one of them. You need to be part of the in crowd spanners.

B

Look better in the daylight.

A

Yeah, maybe. Yeah, that was the only one we've seen is in a studio. Uh but also you know, people have been complaining about the the helmets for a long time and people having the special helmets. But that again is just merchandising and monetization opportunities. So a a little bit cynical about these brand deals, but also, you know, the brands value these special liveries. Who who is it that I mean, we can I don't care if we advertise people.

For free. But uh who is it that's working with the V Carbon and and Mercedes?

C

Well V Carb it's just the summer flavor of their Red Bull drink.

A

Oh is right.

C

Yeah yeah. Their own company that they're promoting, which makes sense. Um and it was NU something or other for Mercedes? Like it was one of the obscure sponsors that doesn't come immediately to mind when you think of Mercedes.

A

And then the other special livery, which I don't know how I feel about this, is the the Cadillac. So Cadillac are four races into their F one career. It's been steady. They've been f finishing Grand Prix when when you know, w w when the gods allow. But to have a special delivery, it just feels like a maybe a lack of to me anyway, I was just like, What? No, not now. But obviously it's their first home race, so yeah, I've torn on that one.

C

I mean it's borderline a special livery at the end of the day. Like borderline. It's still the same colors. You're likely from the stands not gonna be able to tell that it's a special livery because those stars are so small. Quite frankly, I think from the stands it's going to look like it's just a pixelated version of the car almost. Which I think is also a little bit unfortunate.

When you're looking at a livery, you do have to wonder how is it going to look like from a great distance? Because that's what the majority of people are going to see. So I'm very curious if this is actually going to look like stars when you're that far away from the car and that wide shot. or if it's just going to look like it's a little bit of um a poorly placed

Rap.

A

Al also, uh uh the Cadillac livery isn't kinda in my mind yet. It's not burned in, so I don't think I'm gonna particularly notice that it changes. If Ferrari turn up yellow or Mercedes turn up purple, you are Whoa whoa whoa that's a new different thing. But I think this one is gonna largely pass under the radar. But yeah, good luck. Enjoy your home first home race. And Matt uh well, you you can't slag'em off'cause you're trying to get out to see them.

B

I'm I'm hoping to get out to their activation on Sunday for the uh race watch. But what I want to say about this is first of all, come on, they're a first year team. And it's their home race. They may not have the time, they may not have the money or the preparation. They still have to have a special livery because that is now an expected thing at your home or your special race.

Secondly, I know we're evaluating it like because theater, like what does it look like from the from the back row? That's important in a theater. But what's gonna be really important is what do the sponsors who see it up close and personal make of it. And if they're happy and it looks good in a studio photograph. That's probably broadly speaking fine for this season. We can hold them to a higher standard next year.

A

But this all just adds to the sort of Miami festival kind of feel around Formula One. There's tons of activations going on in and around the track. Um I will be on Miami Beach.

uh on stage for one of those things. If you happen to be there, I don't think you'll you'll be able to miss it. But yeah, I'll I'll be there with the Ringer F one and lots of teams are doing different activations spotted around. And I think we'll we'll talk about those once we've done our our wild predictions, but also uh there's a lot of uh there's a lot of new things

New Start Procedure Debates and Safety

to look out for. I think we've covered to death the rules, so we know they're gonna allow them to regen more quickly, discouraging the super clipping. We know they're gonna release the l less battery power all at once. Which should help them get to the end of the straights without that very sad downshift noise. So we've covered all of that. But the new one is the start procedure, Matt. So what's going on with the start?

B

Um, well, as I read it, uh, and this this seems to be um uh there seems to be some confusion about it, but essentially they had allowed for uh specific change at the start. If someone's turbo got bogged down, they would allow you you to tap your MGUK to bring you up to speed. And and it was and it's fairly it's fairly limited. in terms of what they're allowing. However, I'm a little unclear. They're definitely testing it, but the latest thing I read was

that in fact they would not be running it in the races this weekend. But the other interesting thing that came up, and this is what I want to bring up, is the original proposal for this was if if you had to use it at the start. You got a drive-thru penalty as well. And I gotta say.

I am quite in favor of that because it it you look at it on its face and this is my initial reaction, it's like, wow, that seems like a very easy thing to game if you have an unsolvable technical problem that you'd rather not spend money on. The teams were surprised, surprise, talked the FIA out of doing this immediately. So that's not going to be in the official rule. But the FI says they will be watching very carefully that cookie jar before dinner.

A

Oh Christina, you had that same look of surprise a as me. I I'll be honest, I don't really understand.

I...

C

I knew about them testing out in Miami the race starts and and seeing how it would go. But the surprise part to me was yeah, the the drive-through penalty. I understand the inclination to make sure that teams aren't using the start. and this safeguard as a fallback for them not properly developing their car. But, you know, drive-thru penalties are also Sabbage.

A

Harsh.

C

Yeah. And it messes with your strategy. It's it's it's one of those things where I'm going I'm not completely surprised that teams are going pump the break. There's better ways to discourage us from doing this.

Then

C

Drive through penalties.

A

Well also, i if um if if some cars are going off the line at different rates and you know that you're either one of the faster starters or you're one of the normal starters and ahead of you, y you know we it's not a secret. You know, oh, there's a big old turbo.

Audi. I can I can see the turbo bulging out of the chassis there. I'm gonna have to look out for that. That's a potential thing to look out for. Maybe I can't use my superstar and be a hundred percent safe from contact or as safe from contact as I would normally be and that's something you've got to consider.

I don't know. I think this this is the sticking plaster of all sticking plasters. Uh this is the messiest solution I think they've come up with so far. And probably d I mean, i is there that much of a concern? I know there was a big ni and miss. At one of the starts, but that's because people weren't ready for it. But now, like you're fully aware that that this is going to happen, you should kind of know.

B

You should

A

Too many young drivers on the grid, isn't there? That's the problem.

B

They they've updated uh they've even updated the rear lights to make it more obvious to the drivers. But the issue with the start, uh uh do you remember in Japan when Albin got like bogged down in qualifying? Right. Like he didn't just get bogged down. He was like going three miles an hour through turns one and two because he did that qualifying trick. So the real safety concern isn't even anything we've seen yet.

It's someone getting their car into basically like just stuck in anti stall for lack of a better word. So your first driver, second driver. is sighted. Third driver is right on second driver and when second driver peels off, they've got not enough time to react and you've got a full speed collision into an almost

object, that's always bad for the drivers and it's it's bad. So there is a legitimate concern here about making sure the turbo and the car itself doesn't get into that lag state where the turbo isn't helping the internal combustion engine at all. And that's why this rule came about. It's literally just, oh here, have have an here, let's get you up to a speed where your turbo begins to operate is really what the band aid is here.

A

Yeah, and then come in for a drive thru with the

B

And then and then if you do such a bad job starting then there's also a penalty assessed. I will argue with Christina at my own peril, admittedly. Uh perhaps from a sporting point of view, it would be excessive to do that. However, From a watching the race point of view, it could make it really exciting, something that's normally pretty boring, if one of the top qualifiers wounds up getting sent through a drive-thru at the beginning of the race.

Well, it's not such a bad thing. That could be kind of exciting to see,'cause then they can write a completely different strategy. They could put on hard tires and go the whole distance.

A

No not on a drive through. Can't pit on a drive thru.

B

All right. Yeah. Drive thru. Right. Drive thru. Sorry. Um so maybe a time penalty. I don't know. But be you know what I mean? It opens some doors for them to do different things and uh and always catching from the back is an exciting thing to see. So

C

True. But it does mean then that we'd have to deal with even more people leaving comments that things are artificial. And quite frankly, If there's one thing I'm tired of and we're already at round four this season, we're only at round four.

Oh my goodness.

C

Band phrase mute it. I never want to hear that again.

A

It's it's like that captain meme, isn't it? Oh it's been a it's been a hell of a season. Captain, it's round four.

C

Tuesday.

A

It's it's Tuesday, Captain. So I w the last thing on the starts is obviously this is introducing an unnecessary danger on the start, but it's not unusual in racing to have cars not leave the grid. That is an inherent Uh that is an inherent part of starting, but I think because it's been relatively rare in F one, people may have been caught out initially. I I I think

The best play here is exercise caution, uh say, well, you you've seen what's happened before, so you have to drive accordingly, and and you can't a punish people uh excessively for having a slow start. So yes, you've got a slow start, so you're gonna lose places. But now we're gonna force you with this leg up to start normally, but then you have to do a drive thru. So to be clear, the drive thru isn't happening now, but they can still use the

the thing, okay, so that is just punishing the teams who are ha have made a good start'cause'cause there are trade offs. So these cars with a poor start have better performance down the straights or something like that. So now they get the best of both worlds.

B

The idea with the amount of energy they're allowed to use and how they're allowed to use it isn't that they really get any advantage. It's that that that state that Albin was in becomes an impossibility.

So it's not really gonna bring them back up to, oh, I've had a normal start, like you know, like Ferrari better than you know, whatever, McLaren and McLaren was way better than Mercedes, but Ferrari's still better than McLaren. It just keeps you from going into a state where you're going, you know. Were you going like uh I I'll say like

Like twenty kilometers, thirty two kilometers an hour while everybody else is doing a hundred and fifty at you at the entrance to turn one. That's what they're trying to

A

I'm gonna stick with my pre season request, which is a separate lane, like a crawler lane. It's no big deal, it's no one has to be embarrassed, everybody's gonna have to use it at some point. Just a little lane that you pull off to to the left. And if you stay in the right, you know that that's that's the overtaking lane as well. Oh.

B

You just had a genius idea.

A

No.

B

You know how they have the you have to go outside for the boost in Formula E? You should have a super clipping lane you have to drive through if you're super clipping way to the outside of the track and off the racing line.

Miami Weather, F2, and Engine Rules

A

We solved it, man. Come on, Tombasis. Come on, Tombasis. Get us in here. Get us in the FIA. We are an ideas factory. Weather this weekend. There does look to be some rain around on on s on Sunday. And it was a it was interesting last year, wasn't it, Christina, in the stands where we had to keep moving further and further back as as the rain washed out the F1 Academy race, didn't it?

C

Yes, it was them that got washed out. This time though, it could be Formula Two. Very exciting that they're in North America for the first time for two rounds, Miami and Canada. But it's uh yeah. Oh yes.

A

We get to watch uh Formula Two races this weekend as well. I I I'm never good at keeping track of w of when they're on track. They do do they do a sprint and a big race? They do two races over the weekend, don't they?

C

Yep. Yes. You have one free practice session, one qualifying The reverse grid will be for the spontaneous, and then standard feature race, typically the Sunday morning. Now rain the last time I checked for Sunday is scheduled, anticipated, however you want to phrase it, uh for later in the race.

A

twenty.

C

Okay.

A

Oh right.

C

The main event.

A

Because it's it's a it's a it's a it's not like England where if it rains it's wet for about an hour and a half. And it takes its sweet time even on a sunny day. The rain sort of evaporated off the track last time. From sopping wet on the the Sunday, impossible to race, to absolutely bone dry in a very short amount of time. So if that happens mid-race

it's gonna be really interesting to see which drivers kinda hang on. Okay, oh can we hang on to our slicks for just just a bit'cause we know it's gonna go and which drivers decide to just be on the right tire at the right time.

B

I think the real concern here would be lightning because uh someone had brought up I I I haven't actually looked this up but someone

A

Yeah.

B

Yeah. If it's if it's if it's an electrical storm, they might actually just have to stop the race. Because they apparently have rules now about that. I don't I don't know. I mean you're in a car. I don't see what they you're driving around with a huge battery, how that could be a problem if there's lightning in the area. Honestly, I suspect it's more for the uh van's protection than for the drivers. But if it but if it is severe electrical activity, that that could

that could that could actually just end the race in a way that um the rain normally wouldn't. Because'cause you're right. Normally in Florida you get a storm like that in Anywhere from ten to thirty minutes and then blue skies boiling hot. So humid, you know, your eyelashes.

A

Yeah. Um because we Oh by the way, yeah, send your R S V P if you're coming to see us in in Miami. We Christina's not here, you're gonna miss out. But there is we are lining up the drinks order now. I think we're gonna do a little cocktail bar there. And uh if if the invite on the RS V P link that Matt's gonna put in the show notes is is full, email me spanners ready sorry, spanners at mistapex.net and I'll make sure that your name goes on the list. We have actually got a nice

A nice little bunch of people coming now. So uh I'm really, really looking forward to that. But the locals here at Box Box You know, they've been saying to me, I just wish we had like a proper wet race because Miami can offer that little bit of chaos and so all the residents here are kind of doing uh doing a little rain dance. trying to trying to get that'cause'cause there is potential for a properly dramatic Grand Prix. And I and I'm also slightly optimistic that the the way these engines work

is gonna open up the straits and over up open up a little bit of overtaking in Delta to to make the Miami Grand Prix come to life. Because we were here in twenty twenty four, weren't we? And I know Castillo was getting very excited about the Norris win, but it was it was a safety car kind of swap. It was it was gifted a little, wasn't it, his first win there? And

But on the whole, those races have settled. They've settled very quickly, is what I'm saying. You get the action at the start and then it's like, Well, uh, you know, ambience. It's nice. How are you doing? Might get a hot dog. Which is fine.

B

Okay, so I I I I'm gonna be I'm gonna be uh just uh problem here and say that under the previous rule set, you're absolutely right. But think about what we've seen in China. Think about that entrance into turn seventeen, that long wide hairpin where cars can go side by side round, and then the action is who can get on throttle earliest and best with the least loss of traction.

It could make it, uh, from a visual point of view, a little bit different where the overtaking spots are versus where we're used to them in in the previous regulation set. So I'm I'm a little bit intrigued to see how it all plays out, especially because they've again Change the rules a little bit and we're going to get more normal. Um, if you look at a graph of like 2025, it's just like a line up and then a off a cliff.

Going into a corner where the breaking zone is. And we're getting more of that shape now with the new rule set. I actually thought of a I thought I thought of an analogy just for you spanners, which is like a ballistic missile versus a missile that gets shot and is powered directly to the target.

These power units with their application of power early on the straight are like a ballistic missile. You shoot'em up and then they just gravity brings them down and that's into the corner. That's why everyone's complaining. This is more, we're getting a lot closer to the target before we run out of propellant, which the target here would be burner entry. So should be fun to watch.

Track Navigation and Race Data

A

Not bad, Matt. Not bad.

B

Thank you.

A

Good effort. Oh with the differences in uh where they regen, what I'm hoping uh here's here's a prediction then. My first prediction. We're gonna get is it turn six is the the swimming pool bit where all the people who aren't watching the race hang out. Now, uh do you do you remember yeah, you you guys sat there for I think one of the F one Academy practices and I gracefully came down from hospitality to hang out with you guys for a bit?

And it was turn six and it was just like nothing much was really going on round that corner. But I I bet we'll get a wall of death around the outside of turn six by the swimming pool section, listening to everyone typing, looking up, trying to remember which one turn six is. That's my first prediction. Lewis Hamilton to overtake uh let's see, uh Piastri, round turn six, wall of death.

C

So you were partially right. You were actually thinking of turn twelve, I think. Oh

A

Curses.

C

Because turn twelve is where there's all the cabanas in the middle, right?

A

Yes, that's the one. Turn twelve then.

C

Yeah, so that's the one that you got lost walking to like three times.

A

You wouldn't send your location.

C

I did. I did. I couldn't. You had your location on the entire weekend.

A

So the so the can you still just track my location even and just direct me?

C

Honestly, yes. Okay. Like spanners, turn left. Turn left.

B

We'll be like secret service agents. We'll just have Christina in our ear going, No, no, no, no. Other way, other way, other right.

A

I I I actually need that. Um but Christina I saw one of your TikToks that said that there was something with Apple Maps that was helping people around the track.

C

There is, yeah. So Apple Maps, they've updated it so they have all the information from the track logistics on board. So it's not just the general roads and how to get to the track itself, but you can give instructions to Apple Map, I want to go from gate eight. to grandstand by the marina, whichever it is, and it'll tell you which direction to walk and when to go over bridges.

And that's those are the details that I was actually really excited for for a lot of people because the bridges are you're not used to navigating that at most events. So to have the specific instruction, yes, you are going over a bridge now. I I think it's gonna

A

Amazing. That's like everyone can have a Tina on on their on their phone, but only for Apple Maps. Can you get Apple Maps from normal?

C

From normal?

A

From normal fun.

C

F from not part of the ecosystem. I don't believe you can, Spanners. I'm so sorry.

A

Surely Ways can tell me which bridge to go over. Fine. I just fine if you're an Apple person, just share with us. Share with us um us normals for a for a little while. Uh and in fact, uh while we're talking about Christina's TikToks, you are Christina Lee Mate on TikTok and you do a fantastic bullet where you tell people what to look out for. Can I can I uh jump you and surprise you and ask for a little mini bullet of Miami?

Or would you like me to stall for time? You can literally hear her clicking and panicking at

C

Oh no, no, no. I knew you would ask this. It's in a slightly different window, but I have it. I got it right here.

A

Let's go. Um mini bullet with Christina Lehman.

C

Alrighty, it's race weekend Formula One, which means it's time for the bullet, some good bullet points to know ahead of a race weekend. In Miami this weekend, it's going to be hot, humid, so that's a great physical challenge for the drivers and fans alike. For the Grand Prix, you're looking at fifty seven laps and it is a sprint weekend, so that will be run to nineteen. You also have nineteen turns.

three straight mode zones and a track length of five point four one two kilometers. The softest tires in the range are being brought, the C3s, Through C5s, and last year this was a one-stop strategy. And everyone is going to ask, what's the energy looking like? Because that's the big concern these days. It is going to be closer to China. We have three really good heavy breaking zones. That's going to be turn one, turn 11, and turn 17. So.

Worry not folks?

C

We have a lot coming.

A

And with the tweaks a very good bullet, thank you very much. Round of applause. Thank you, Christina. Uh the the I I've got a feeling that with those tweaks and the combination of it not being a Suzuka type track.

that maybe th I'm just I kinda hope this takes the pressure off the regulations a bit because I'm not saying that people who've got an issue with the regulations more than I have are wrong. It's just that it's not that interesting. So I have got my fingers crossed that it starts to bleed away. uh from being y a major part of the conversation. And then hopefully Montreal is the same as well. There's a lot of breaking zones in in Montreal too.

C

They're around midway through the Ranking as far as energy. I found an article by the race where they had grouped them based on how much energy they would be allowed to regen, yada yada yada. So Miami is in the group that has like over a third of the tracks about that, yeah, they're allowed to

bank a lot of energy. So nine megajoules. This was from the start of the season, so it is gonna be updated a little bit as we go, but a huge chunk of the races actually aren't crazy energy starved. That's So w we're just getting a very skewed view right at the start because we had Albert Park, which is towards the lower end of things as well as

So both of those are towards the lower end of things. Montreal is also mid-range, so we're gonna start getting a better idea of the majority of the racing that we're going to get to see very shortly, as opposed to the energy starved ones.

Engine Fairness and Race Predictions

A

So let's get into some of our predictions then. Alright. I I'm starting with I think that I think that we are before even the Adobu what's the Adobu, the engine. اشتركوا في القناة

B

And updates.

A

Don't wanna I just don't wanna learn it. I feel bad for Mercedes, you know. I think he's got a point because Tokto Wolf was saying, Well this is gonna let teams leapfrog other teams and I I've got I've got s sympathy for it, Matt, because it's honestly like what's the point? What's the point in pulling out a big advantage? Yeah. W why not just have a spec engine then if you've if we're gonna do this?

B

for the exact reason that you don't want a spec engine. What this lets people do is essentially uh like under the old like under the good old days with the token system, it just lets teams have a token or two tokens. There's plenty of stuff that's excluded from being developed. But if you were behind, and the reason to have it is think about where Alpine was with their engine the last two seasons.

And and they're like the the car on certain tracks that weren't energy sensitive was really competitive. But there was nothing they could do once you got to a track that required a certain level of power. The point is to let the manufacturers develop the engines they want to.

But to keep them within the bounds of what you might call the playing field. And right now there are no boundaries to the playing field. This gives you some boundaries. And the very specific complaint I have seen over and over again, and it really just

I I find it irritating to see it even brought up is like, oh, but then you know, like you choose the exhaust back pressure and that has an effect. And you choose the turbo size, that has an effect. Isn't it an advantage? Well, no, the rule the rules that were offered We're uh we're going to take some of that into account and you'll never guess what happened.

A

The teams objected stonely.

B

Teams couldn't agree. So they went with the very basic number of uh what I am paraphrasing as because nobody knows how they're really measuring it, which is basically we're gonna put your internal combustion engine on a dyno, we're gonna run it at these parameters. And if we measure a discrepancy greater than two or four percent in terms of absolute output numbers.

Then you get um then you then you get some updates available to you. And if it's within two percent, then carry on, soldier. You're doing fine.

A

All right, let's uh let wrap up the the pre show because you've waffled on. I want I was determined to do uh half an hour. I mean preview, not pre show, uh with some out and out predictions for the finishing order. So I'm gonna go for I'm gonna go for a Lewis Hamilton win. in Miami, gonna go for Antonelli P two, Russell P three, Leclerc P four

Piastri P five, Nolando Norris P six and then the rest uh the rest of the field a lap down from the leader. That's what I'm going for. Can you top that, Christina Leemay?

C

Oh my goodness. I don't like doing predictions. I hate this part so badly. Oh my goodness.

A

It's okay. I won't clip them out and use them against you, don't worry. I will.

C

I am going to predict I'd kind of love for Antonelli to win again.

A

I would say.

C

Three in a row. Yeah. But then we'd have to see that purple race suit on the podium.

A

It's like not worth it. It's like it's like the golfers you can play like, Oh, I did a hole in one but I did it with the worst ball and you go, No, now that now that's framed forever.

C

Well just imagine looking not just at the purple race suit, but all of the teal and pink. that also is all around Miami. I I would not enjoy seeing that, but I would enjoy seeing Antonelli win three times in a row. So we'll go with him for P one and then P two, P three, double Ferrari.

A

Yeah. I know. Oh we're both going, you know, yeah, Ferrari up there. And and the thing is that the the Miami its colour is pink, isn't it? As a Grand Prix, its colour is pink. Pink teal. Pink teal. So yeah, Mercedes have just gone on full class. full on colour clash with the Grand Prix itself. All right, Matt, what are you going for? What's your what's your line up at the front of the grid? Mm.

B

I'm sort of torn. Um I would like to predict a shock Norris win,'cause he's won here before.

A

He has tracked.

B

suits him a bit more than Piastri and McLaren bringing a whole new car. The history of McLaren bringing new things is it tends to give Norris an advantage. There you go, Piastri fans, I've I've I've thrown you a bone there.

A

It was a conspiracy. Weber was right. Brand new car just for Norris. You know, uh you know, I I keep saying this, McLaren didn't win a championship by accident. And they're a good team. They're good at bringing updates. And last time they had a B Spec car, it changed the the course of the season. And I don't know if they're calling this a B spec, but it's a major update.

B

Yeah. They're they're if they're calling it a whole new car, I think we're allowed to call it a B spec, that's fine. Uh I like This is, I think, like China, a bit more of a Hamilton track. So a Hamilton podium, I see, is a possibility. And What was my th my third one is just now flittered out of my head. What was it? What is that?

A

You distracted yourself.

B

I distracted myself. So oh yeah, I like the Antonelli narrat from a narrative point of view, Antonelli has to beat George now to make the whole rest of the season interesting.

A

I think Piastri has run well here as well.'Cause I I'm pretty sure he was on for victory in twenty four. Right. Yeah. Was it? Yeah. All right then. So we're all across the board there, but we are all with the f the the top three teams. None of us are really giving Red Bull a a look in.

B

Their rear wing will help, but they're essentially a midfield car with an unsolved, unpredictability problem at mid corner. I don't see that being fixed. in five weeks. I want to also give a shout out to Alan McNish, Audi.

A

Oh yeah, yeah. Um I I think for an outside one here, if you wanted a crazy bet based on the rain, I'm gonna go for a Perez point. In a in a in a chaos soaked you know field that sees people making terrible tire decisions and Paris just ekes it out for a for a final point, barging Botas off on the way. And so muted celebrations in the Cadillac team that Perez is utterly unaware and toned deaf of, and he's fully just like giving it the big one as Botas gently weeps.

In the corner.

A

Okay, and on that on that stud silence, uh we'll leave that. We are gonna see you not live on Sunday for once, but hopefully by the time your Monday morning commute starts you'll have the video and podcast versions of our Miami Grand Prix. So uh we'll see you then if we don't see you before in North Miami for our live event. Whichever one you're attending, work hard, be kind, and have fun this was Mr. Apex Podcast.
