Speaker 3

Go to omnihotels dot com slash Viking Lakes. It's Nordo from nine to noon. Here Vikings starting the twenty twenty three season with a thud. Unfortunately, twenty to seventeen was the final. Yesterday, the Vikings lose to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. You're going to hear next segment from head coach Kevin O'Connell. He spoke to the media earlier this afternoon. I'll also include a few kfan exclusive postgame interviews with

a few players. Tatum Everett tracked down in the locker room immediately after the loss.

Speaker 2

Let's get to it.

Speaker 3

Let's rewind to the action, and it was difficult sledding for both offenses to start the game, exchanging three and outs, a couple of punts to start this one, but the second possession for the Purple yesterday, showing some promise in front of that home crowd, everyone giving it up for Bud giving it up for the Purple to start twenty twenty three on a high note.

Speaker 2

It was a nine play drive.

Speaker 3

It featured a suite chain moving eleven yard catch to TJ Hawkinson. Justin Jefferson had a thirty yard catch and run. Let's go get some points in an early lead against the visitors. Right, third and short.

Speaker 4

This happens ninth play, if a possession that's on sixty one yards and it may be over.

Speaker 5

In fact it is Cousins and.

Speaker 4

Schlotman messed up the exchange and the Buccaneers have turned over the Pikings. Joe tryon Shoyinka the one to come out of the pile with it, and the first turnover.

Speaker 3

Goes the way of Tampa Bay. I really have never seen this before. I've seen Kirk stepped on. I've seen Kirk tripping over offensive lineman. As a matter of fact, I saw both of those things occurring last year. I've never seen it where ed Ingram he essentially punched the ball out of Kirk's hands as he takes the snap and is turning back potentially into a playfake situation turnover just outside the red zone.

Speaker 2

That one was painful. We're not done now. A key part of.

Speaker 3

This game is, indeed, you know, with this new defense, defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Early on yesterday, he was flummoxy Baker Mayfield and the Bucks offense orseing punt after punt after punt, inactive drive, inactive drive.

Speaker 2

Here or there and everywhere throughout the first half. Loving that.

Speaker 3

But also another key part holding onto the ball and on the ensuing Vike's possession, another giveaway.

Speaker 4

Viking zero up two on third down minus wanting to take gift, big blitz.

Speaker 5

By the Bucks.

Speaker 4

Tuslin's hit balls out Bucks ball for minus two and the take gift and they get it at the eighteen yard line and twe Winfield Junior all over the mix. In fact, he recovered it and Antoine Winfield Junior is off to a.

Speaker 5

Terrific start this game.

Speaker 3

Yeah, second play of the game he gets by Alexander Madison forces an incompletion, putting pressure on kirk On. This particular play gets the strip, sack and the recovery. Multiple plays made by the former Gopher Antoine Winfield Junior in the backfield for the Bucks yesterday. That's two turnovers, by the way, if you're keeping track. In the first ten minutes of the season, Bucks ball at the Minnesota eighteen yard line. Defense holds strong again Road team.

Speaker 2

It's the scoring started with.

Speaker 3

A field goal already six yard try leptash snap spot and the kick is good reach twenty three to go. In the first quarter, a cant pay and ears off a strip sat by Antoine Winfield Junior get a mcwaplin field calling lead to three zero final minutes of the opening quarter. As you heard there, both teams now exchange three and outs again five to three and outs yesterday for the Vikings offense.

Speaker 2

But the offense.

Speaker 3

Finally gets going in the early second quarter a six play, eighty plus yard drive.

Speaker 2

Justin Jefferson.

Speaker 3

He had seven catches for one hundred and thirty eight yards in the first half. He gets all the attention for good reason, but we also got to peek at what Jordan Addison can offer as a weapon. The rookie found himself in the end zone for the lead Minnesota four. I'm third down, Cousins, shotgun, four man rush, kirks, great drop, ste page man.

Speaker 5

Wide open good.

Speaker 4

Jordan Addison, Welcome to the National Football League.

Speaker 3

It was beautiful, quick hitting drive and score seven to three, and then the Vikings force another punt and at a field goal, a short one from Greg Joe's twenty five yards, it's ten to three in favor of the Purple. With a handful of minutes left in the half, Bucks had totaled I think around thirty total yards of offense to this.

Speaker 2

Point in the game.

Speaker 3

But then they rattle off a seven play, sixty one yard TD drive ending like this.

Speaker 4

Finger maypield out of the shot John two x two formation and we're shot white by a side Minnesota rushes. Poor Baker dances around the pocket, throws to the end zone, caught touchdown. Buccaneers Mike Evans with a twenty eight yard touchdown. He got behind or safeties and it's ten.

Speaker 3

To nine MINESOA ten ten was one oh nine to go before the break. Vikings offense is hustling again on short time JJ with a forty.

Speaker 2

Plus yard connection.

Speaker 3

Clock's ticking down, getting the end zone for a lead at half right, even a field goal makes you feel a bit better.

Speaker 2

At this point.

Speaker 3

Instead the third option, the third turnover of the half. Twenty three seconds to go on the first half, Cousins out of the shot gun, Powks fires to the end zoner close to it and packed it picked off center of the field.

Speaker 4

The Buccaneers have an interception and justin Jefferson.

Speaker 3

Smacks said interceptor that is Christian Isian, the undrafted rookie from Rutgers, and he paid for it with the Jefferson hit.

Speaker 5

But the a topic is were.

Speaker 4

Minus three minus three and the take gift.

Speaker 3

Come on Bucks, keep Vikings off the board, keep the game tied at half.

Speaker 2

And speaking of the second.

Speaker 3

Half, third quarters, if you remember a year ago, the third quarters plagued the Purple and it was similar yesterday in terms of scoring, differential long drives by the opponent, in ability to get in the end zone during third quarters. All these things were issued despite a thirteen win season a year ago.

Speaker 2

It was similar yesterday.

Speaker 3

Bucks opened the frame with a nearly nine minute drive thirteen plays.

Speaker 2

It looked like the Vikes were going to hold them to a field goal thirty.

Speaker 4

One yard dry right hash snap spot right foot at McLoughlin.

Speaker 5

Kick is good and on these seek per scoreboard. The way we have a flag. We have a flag. This is the case. If it is encroachment on us, then it's going to be a first down. Uh oh, that'll give him five. I'll give hi up yard.

Speaker 3

Ist I side defense number twenty lineup in.

Speaker 2

The neutras off Ja Ward the five yard penalty first stout.

Speaker 4

Jayward thinking he was gonna get sneaky like in that preseason game against Arizona.

Speaker 5

Yeah, it's a rookie mistake right there.

Speaker 2

Whoops.

Speaker 3

Three plays later, they have a rookie, Trey Palmer. He gets a touchdown, third.

Speaker 4

And goal, mayfield, empty backfield, looking left now, he swings to the middle and it's caught for up Buccaneers touchdown. It is Trey Palmer, the Nebraska rookie with his first National Football League touchdown, and the Buccaneers have perhpped a sixteen to ten lead.

Speaker 3

Seventeen to ten after the extra point. Now the Vikings answer with their most dominant drive of the game as well.

Speaker 5

Loved it.

Speaker 3

Sixteen plays, seven and a half minutes off the clock. Early fourth quarter, Alexander Madison battles his way in to tie. Alexander Madison motions across the formation of cousins.

Speaker 5

We'll thrower too, and caught at the five who stumbles his way to the two cave bo is his way into the end zone. Touch show by Games. That was all.

Speaker 4

Alexander Madison and it's seventeen sixteen Buccaneers.

Speaker 3

More punting ensues until the Bucks creep their way into purple territory and they give kicker Chase McLoughlin a chance from fifty seven.

Speaker 5

This is a fifty seven yard try righte.

Speaker 3

Hash snap spy McLoughlin, blind dry band.

Speaker 5

It's good.

Speaker 4

Chase McLoughlin from fifty seven, matching a career long has kicked the Buccaneers to a twenty seventeen lead.

Speaker 3

They always hit those, don't they They always do. That's the fatalism that I have as a rube. I apologize, but it just feels like they're always gonna hit those kicks. If you give them the chance, and at this stage of the game, just five to ten left in it. Now, the Vikings respond by going three and out for the fifth time in the game, only three possessions in the entire second half, long touchdown drive. Loved it, but then two three and outs the final two times that they

had the ball. Now it's the defense. They need to make a stop and they can't.

Speaker 4

It's nervous time at us Bank Stadium. Baker out of the shotgun.

Speaker 5

He takes this half.

Speaker 4

I'm third and ten, looks right, throws right, Godwin, wide open, caught, first down.

Speaker 5

Ballgame.

Speaker 4

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won't begin one to know and the Minnesota Vikings are going to be six and two in home openers are going to lose to the Buccaneers.

Speaker 3

Clock runs out, no miracles, no late stage heroics, and that indeed, as you heard, the box is the ballgame. Vikings had an advantage in several statistical categories despite their complete inability to run the ball, but the Bucks they

controlled possession. I mentioned the lack of opportunities on offense in the second half of the purple, but the Bucks were just boringly productive throughout the second half, no negative plays, keeping Baker upright, not effecting or or allowing the Vikings defense to affect and impact his play, and they were smartly handled by the visitors.

Speaker 2

Kirk was hit nine times yesterday.

Speaker 3

I mentioned Baker outside of an early daneil Hunter sack, he was just hit twice total in the game. Turnover differential three to nothing in favor of the Bucks. That's catastrophic when you're trying to win a close game. So the on to one Vikings they got to bounce back. Now, if you were doing the wins and loss tallying for the season and you expected that this one would be at w you're gonna have to find it somewhere else now.

Speaker 2

And it's a short week.

Speaker 3

They had two same as last year Thursday night, short week, Philly Eagles primetime. That weird, crazy fan base, all of it. That's what Elizah head right here and you'll get to hear that pregame at five and of course the actions starting in primetime right here on your home for Vikings football fan head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Speaker 2

He did talk to the media. I mentioned that at the beginning of.

Speaker 3

This earlier today, you're going to get to hear that around the corner and before I go to break though, I do want to mention this, speaking of Thursday, it's a Thursday night game.

Speaker 2

You can work remotely.

Speaker 3

Speaker 2

When we'll return.

Speaker 3

Let's hear from the head coach a player or two from the locker room immediately following the loss. It is Vikings rewind presented by Omni Viking Lakes.

Speaker 2

On the fan slash Vikings.

Speaker 3

It's at five point thirty at Floyd's in Victoria and it's presented by Miller Light. You could win great prizes, including tickets in the Miller Light Lounge at us Bank Stadium. Go to Vikings dot com slash Vikings Country for more info and a full schedule. Vikings

lost yesterday twenty to seventeen. You heard some of the highlights and low lights from yesterday's loss at the Bank hallan season opener for the Purple. The head coach, Kevin O'Connell addressed the media earlier this afternoon.

Speaker 2

Let's hear a portion of that conversation.

Speaker 6

Injury wise, Bradbury with the back, Darsaw with his ankle, and Davenport they'll really all be day to day. They're in, you know now getting you know, different phases of recovery and starting our preparation on Philadelphia. So we'll see how those guys do and and you know, see how the lineup looks for Thursday.

Speaker 3

Again.

Speaker 5

This is tyle wandrold Gamber. Do you watch the NFL game ship a lot.

Speaker 7

Of teams including the Vikings again and CAMPU look about a step ball or step behind where you go?

Speaker 3

Boy, it looks like that they could have gotten through some of that you know, training campus.

Speaker 7

They'd have played you know, and said you see.

Speaker 3

That at all.

Speaker 6

I mean, yeah, I don't know, you know about the you know, the turnovers or you know, a special teams penalty here and there. I don't know if that's the case, but my expectation is that some of those things, whether they got reps or not, that that really you know, twelve reps here, ten reps there. I don't know if that would have you know, solved that. I think we were you know, we were close in the first half.

If we finished that late in the half drive, you know, to have a chance to go up seventeen to three, you know, that might have gave us opportunity to be very similar to we were to the spot we were going into the locker room a year ago in the opener, but that was not the case, you know, didn't didn't get that drive done, and then they're able to go on a drive not about a nine minute drive there to start this third quarter and tie the football football

game up. So a lot of things that we can improve on and things that, like I said, self inflicted, but also things we could coach better. You know, our players just be a little bit cleaner in their execution and and you know, give ourselves a little bit better chance to not set ourselves behind the eight ball so far.

Speaker 3

Yesterday you mentioned probably un scouted pressures and early you have to basically prepare for the same.

Speaker 2

From Eagles just that.

Speaker 6

Yeah, I think, you know, shoot, this is gonna be you know, this is one of the best defenses in football, one of the best fronts, if not the best in the league right now. And we have a ton of respect for you know, not only the guys that you'll see in their starting units, but they've got you know, kind of a first and second wave of problems defensively.

Speaker 2

Yeah, there's always.

Speaker 6

Gonna be some things where you know a team can get you, especially you know in the opener before things have been really put on tape yet based upon game plan and something that maybe they've done in the past and just given you.

Speaker 2

A little bit different look.

Speaker 6

We got to find ways to survive those downs and not turn the football over. And that's all eleven guys out there, that's not any one particular player. We made some adjustments and we're able to handle uh, you know, that pressure moving forward in the game and and and turned it into you know, some positive conversions later on. But across the board. We think, are you know, our

rules and responsibilities. You know, we handle a lot in our protection schemes and and my hope is, you know we really limit those uh you know kind of free runner looks, and you know, first third down of the game, they run a really good kind of you know, te stunt there to the to the three big side, and we didn't handle it very well. And then we you know, we came back and did it a little bit better

later on in the game. But how many times can we just go out and execute those on the initial opportunities is what I'm looking for, and getting off to a faster start will be critical. We'll have to do some of those things to have a chance to do that against a you know, like I said, one of the best defenses in our league.

Speaker 4

The fans and the media attend to overreact after week one, or are you going to make sure your your players in the locker room don't overreact or you want them done a little overreact from us?

Speaker 5

Yeah, I think it's a little both.

Speaker 6

Look, we you know, no opportunity in this league, regardless of when it takes place. You know, you don't want to underreact to anything. Because it's our job to acknowledge the truth, acknowledge exactly what happened, and that's us having a little bit more information about the what. But I totally understand that reaction, especially with the excitement building for

hopefully this football team. We didn't get it done yesterday, and that's where we've got to go back and acknowledge on a short week the things that you know, both we caused ourselves, the things that the opponent caused, and then what opportunities did we miss possibly in the game on you know, any one of our three phases that the outcome would have been different. So I think there's all the above involved in as we comprehend, you know, yes,

with a mindset of moving forward. And you know, no better way to feel better about what happened yesterday than to go play a really good game on Thursday and and go try to win a game on the road in one of the toughest places to play against a really good team. But I've got nothing but confidence in our football team, you know, and maybe even more so after watching the tape yesterday, knowing how close things were

to be, maybe a different result. But you got to give Tampa credit and you know, we can talk about could of what it should is all we want, but ultimately that result was what it was, and now it's how we handle that as a football team and an organization moving forward that I think is the most important thing.

Speaker 2

Is Viking's head coach Kevin O'Connell with the media earlier.

Speaker 3

Today, a chance to reflect upon yesterday's loss, But yesterday was it was infinitely more immediate in the locker room following the loss, and Tatum Everett was down there to chat with a few players, including running back Alexander Madison.

Speaker 2

Is the reason for the struggles today.

Speaker 8

It's one of the big things, you know, being ourselves. Have to make sure that we eliminate those plays. You can't win close games or rarely do you win close games when you lose the turnover margin.

Speaker 5

By that much.

Speaker 8

So cleaning that up and not beating ourselves something that we have to make sure we emphasize. And you know, look at everyone, look a look at the man in the mirror, and look at what we can do better to avoid that going forward, because that was a big reason why the ball didn't roll our way this time.

Speaker 9

How much of that could be because there weren't so many preseason reps like game reps for you guys, Like, is it harder to get into that rhythm when maybe you hadn't really been in that environment before.

Speaker 8

It definitely is just like kind of a switch. You know, you go straight from practice to game. Mentality and something that you have to adjust to. But you know that it usually takes you know, a couple series to get going. I think that we started off pretty good.

Speaker 10

We just.

Speaker 8

Turn the ball over and that's where you know, you lose momentum and you kind of start back at square one again.

Speaker 2

You have to get the feel for it again. You have to get the confidence again.

Speaker 8

So yeah, that's just kind of where we have to make sure we.

Speaker 3

Fix as Alexander Madison with Tatum Everett and sticking with the offense. She also got the chance to chat with tight end TJ. Hawkinson. Eight catches just thirty five yards on the day for him, but among all the negatives versus being traded and starting mid season with the Purple a year ago, at least he was here from minute one and able to settle in through a full off season in training camp.

Speaker 10

Yeah, no doubt, obviously not the results we wanted, you know, just a long time in camp and then being able to come.

Speaker 5

Out and play in front of these fans.

Speaker 10

Obviously, it's very disappointing for us, but you know it's it's nice to get the season started, and you know, we're looking forward to to turn this thing around from here and going out and get some wins.

Speaker 7

Why do you think it was so hard to develop a rhythm against that front today?

Speaker 10

You know, they were just throwing a lot at us. We kind of knew that coming in that they're gonna, you know, bring some some blisses from the edge, you know of the their their flood and all that. But you know, I mean it was it was just one of those things. We got heated up a couple of times. Things took a little longer to develop, and you know, we weren't able to execute the way we wanted so.

Speaker 7

So short week. So one of the things Bud Great used to say all the time, and he told us Tavin O'Connell pretty often, was short memory. So you have to really file this one short memory and and how do you approach this week with that mindset?

Speaker 10

Yeah, I mean you can't think about this. This is too long, you know, I mean we gotta flush it. We gotta watch the tape on our own because we don't have time to watch it with together, you know, So watch this on our own, get ready for Philly and you know Thursday night game, primetime game. We want to go out and give us give it what we got and you know.

Speaker 2

Show show the world what the Minnesota Vikings are.

Speaker 11

It's d J.

Speaker 3

Hawkinson and then finally Viking safety cam buying them. Spent a couple of minutes with Tatum and here he is highlighting some of the inadequacies on the defensive side of the ball that ultimately contributed to a loss.

Speaker 5

They just lose small things. They're a little small.

Speaker 11

There weren't a lot of big plays, but a lot of the small completions that they had, maybe whether it's someone getting out of their zone or any of us maybe shaking one tackle. But those are small things that really added up to really give us the disadvantage that we didn't want. And that's the exciting part about the loss though. It's really small mistakes that we're able to fix.

We felt good, especially in the first half. We played well, but we have to carry that into the second half and play better.

Speaker 7

What are some of those small things that you need to clean up, really.

Speaker 11

Just things like quarterback vision and being in our zones, being more a lot, a lot quicker to the ball when the ball when the quarterbacks and tensions are there, because especially if we're sending pressure that we know that the ball has to come out fast. So just that understanding of when we're playing aggressive, when we're playing a little more passive. We have to be able to see the difference in that and be able to play more aggressive on certain things.

Speaker 7

How did it feel playing this scheme out there and real, you know, real game like situation for you guys.

Speaker 5

Yeah, it was. It was really fun.

Speaker 11

I think there's a really big upside for us, and I know that it's going to be really effective.

Speaker 2

Especially this is our first game.

Speaker 11

So not that we expect any mistakes, but we know that that's.

Speaker 2

Obviously going to happen.

Speaker 11

It's our first game in a new scheme, and I think we're in a good spot. We just have to carry that aggression and the execution through the whole game, because we did it well in the first half, but coming back after half we didn't play as well.
