Juggling Sports and Rodeo

Speaker 1

ijn Preston . How are you , man , Getting you Doing ? Alright , your tagline at Instagram it's the Preston Wynn . So when you're in school or at the rodeo , do people like the Preston Wynn ? How are you ?

Speaker 2

Add on there just to kind of be funny .

Speaker 1

Oh , okay , okay .

Speaker 2

I still got you .

Speaker 1

Okay , well , it's silent . I can't really . I can't hear you , man . I think it's breaking up , so you just keep that , to , just be funny .

Speaker 2

Yeah , me and one of my good buddies , Connor Dean . He put his as the Connor Dean , so we thought it'd be funny to go the Connor Dean and the Preston Wynn on our Instagram handles Okay .

Speaker 1

Well , if I see you out and about , you know , with your cousins and everything , I'll definitely be like the Preston Wynn , all right . So , preston , you're an all around cowboy slash stud . If you heard a Karris's episode , you do more than two events . Yeah , how many events do you do in the rodeo ?

Speaker 2

Right now I'm just kind of sticking to what I'm hoping to bump it up to three by next high school spring season and yeah . So it's just kind of .

Speaker 1

You've gotten the bulls .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I quit riding bulls after I got injured really bad and just kind of gave it up and focused on team roping and shootdog in here and there , and now I'm kind of getting back into the shootdog and coming along with it pretty well .

Speaker 1

Okay , which one do you like the most right now ?

Speaker 2

Probably team roping .

Speaker 1

Team roping .

Speaker 2

Are you a ?

Speaker 1

header or a healer .

Speaker 2

I mainly heal , but I had two and a lot of rodeo or jackpots around here All right which one's easier . Probably heading .

Speaker 1

Yeah , okay , all right , I like your honesty , thank you , yeah . Yeah , I've had a header on and I'm just like which one's easier ? He's like header . Why don't you heal ? Well , stop , yeah , okay , now did you dabble in steer wrestling too , or is just the shoot the shootdog in right ?

Speaker 2

I'm kind of getting ready to get into the steer wrestling . My older brother does it , and so he's going to take me probably some practice pins and maybe go with me to a couple of schools here and there .

Speaker 1

What gets a kid your age into steer wrestling man ?

Speaker 2

I don't know . Just kind of . We really start out and shootdog in and at like junior rodeos and open rodeos and then we just go up from there and start steer wrestling off horses . Yeah , it just kind of . It never was really that fun for me when I was still riding bulls and no-transcript Red Bulls and getting beat up all the time .

Where I can go beat something up instead of me getting beat up , they still beat you up .

Speaker 1

Yeah , sometimes they don't cooperate as usual . Yeah , ok , all right With with being all around . Cowboy , that is AKA Stud . I just put it out there because it's not too many people are all around . Yeah , you are a high school football player .

Speaker 2

Yes , sir .

Speaker 1

Is that the only sport you play in high school ?

Speaker 2

I do wrestling too , but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep wrestling . I just I've wrestled ever since I was in kindergarten and wrestled last year and I was kind of like , well , I don't know if I like this anymore . I think I'm liking rodeo more .

Speaker 1

Now do the sports in high school . Yes , you're in the high school . The Association Do the sports football wrestling . Does that interfere with the rodeo ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , it does every now and then .

Speaker 1

So my big question in today's episode is how do you do that ? How do you manage the schedule , the time between football wrestling and your rodeo , which is almost year round ? They have it full spring , summer , right , yeah , yeah . How do you manage that schedule and still be the kid that you are ?

Speaker 2

I don't know . I just I just got to kind of pick and choose which rodeos and which football games I got to go to and , like you're , in the summer it's pretty easy because we usually have practices in the mornings and it's usually once a week , so it's a lot easier in the summer than like right now .

I was going to enter Redsville last weekend with my dad but I ended up having a football game and I was on April Leonard there and , yeah , it's just kind of going to be hectic for these next few weeks with football and high school rodeo .

Football, Rodeo, and College Dreams

Speaker 1

So do you drive yet ? Yeah , ok about the same , because I'm going to like mash out to your parents for driving you here , there and everywhere in between . Yeah , so , finding time to do it all . You just pick and choose and coaches are OK with it . High school rodeo associations . Ok with it too . Yeah , my coaches are fully .

Speaker 2

My coaches are fully Every now and then they're like maybe quit rodeo and right now . But they're pretty OK with it as long as I'm not getting hurt , yeah In it and Messing something up and missing a whole bunch of games .

Speaker 1

Yeah , all right . What started the rodeo gig , the scene for you in your life ? It sounds like you just have a family . Yeah , rodeo stars Shout out to J Dove and JC , yeah .

Speaker 2

My dad . He rode back and horse bear back horses all till like I was probably three or four and then he kind of quit and then he got back on one when I was , I think , six and my middle brother was three , so it was kind of I don't remember a whole lot watching him get on .

Yeah , and ever since I remember the one time I watched him I was like , ok , I want to rodeo . And he's always had a rope or something in my hand since I could walk and all that . So yeah , it just kind of fell into me OK .

Speaker 1

And since that , since you have the background with your dad and then you know family members , basically I mean you're hooked , literally yeah , and in supported , obviously . Mom said it was OK to be on the podcast . Yep , I probably did too , but I mean your brother is in the rodeo as well . You said yeah .

Speaker 2

My youngest brother Wesley . We call him Ricky Bobby . Ricky Bobby , oh nice yeah .

Speaker 1

I don't know what to do with my hands . I don't know what to do with my hands .

Speaker 2

Yeah yeah , he's kind of the wild child , he beaucouping the rules , so I don't think he's big-reality in this world . He goes around telling everybody in the morning he pisses , excellence and all that yeah , he's all hyped up on .

Speaker 1

Mountain Dew .

Speaker 2

Yeah , my youngest brother or my middle brother , he's just kind of getting back into rodeo . He used to be in it quite a bit , but then he kind of found out about basketball football and he's just had that love for those . Unlike me or my youngest brother , We've liked rodeo more than school sports and all that .

Speaker 1

Okay , what keeps you going to football and rodeo and keeping that schedule ?

Speaker 2

Probably just kind of dreaming of going to a state championship and football and all the money and awards for rodeo .

Speaker 1

All right , all right , so that just that dream .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Any moment you can hit the jackpot literally right yeah , All right . What position do you play in football , man ?

Speaker 2

Tackle and the offensive end .

Speaker 1

All right . Now I know why you're trying to get in this dear wrestling . All right .

Speaker 2

Yeah , okay .

Speaker 1

Pinpoint man Rodeo football . Which one came first , rodeo ?

Speaker 2

Rodeo .

Speaker 1

If you had to pick , which one would you stick with ?

Speaker 2

Probably rodeo . I've been a lot better at rodeo than I have football . I mean , I'm pretty good at football and what . I'm really good at rodeo when I want to be , and I got my head in the right spot . So it's just kind of like that love over the like in my opinion , okay .

Speaker 1

So you're still rodeo and you get an offer for college football . What then ?

Speaker 2

I'd probably take it in a heartbeat . I like all the concepts of football getting to go run around , smack people and it's very fun . Rodeo is kind of where my heart's at and I would play football in college and heartbeat and that I'd probably just go back to rodeoing .

Speaker 1

Okay , all right , gotcha . So there's options . Rodeo program in college hits you up and say hey , got to drop football , come to rodeo , you'd do that .

Speaker 2

Oh yeah .

Speaker 1

What program do you hope to get into if you had that option ?

Speaker 2

I've been looking kind of at Tarleton University down in Texas . I think they have a excellent rodeo team and yeah , I just kind of really like their coaches and I think they have an outstanding team to maybe be on one day .

Speaker 1

You think , mom ?

Speaker 2

If I could get a scholarship , or for them to accept me to get in .

Speaker 1

You think mom will let her baby boy go to Texas ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , probably All right .

Speaker 1

All right , and what event ?

Speaker 2

Probably . Team are open and I'm really . I used to ride bareback a lot and I just kind of got out of it once I started getting on Bullsmore and now I'm going back to it to get on some horses and like I got I think I got on my first I decided to jump on a cow , since I haven't been on anything in two years with a rigging .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

So I was like well , I'm going to take it easy and jump on a cow first , before I go get on a horse to make sure I still know what I'm doing .

Speaker 1

So you quit bull riding because you got hurt , but then you're going on bareback because man , all right , I need to know , like , why go back to bareback ? That's just as dangerous as bulls . I mean you fall , the fall is higher . I'm trying to figure it out , man , why go back to bareback ?

Speaker 2

I just Whenever I see a good bareback ride come together like the pro guys with Layton Berry or Rocker Steiner , all them on TV and I'm like that would be a cool milestone to make on the TV and make rides like them guys .

Speaker 1

Let me ask you a question why did dad not do bareback anymore ?

Speaker 2

I think he was just . He's a very big guy . He's , I think , 6'4" or 6'5" , and he was just getting too big and getting a little bit older and decided he was going to be done .

Speaker 1

Okay , well , I don't know , man , I watch a lot of bull riding and I compare and contrast a lot of bull riding . Bull rides to barebacks . Yeah , you're getting beaten up either way , man . Yeah , so I'm just trying to figure out like all right , bareback , all right , so you're more than just a two sport guy ? Yeah , is there an option ?

Let's go back to football and rodeo . Is there an option to do both at a rodeo program and a football program ? Have you ever heard of that ?

Speaker 2

I haven't heard of it , but I feel there probably could be a school out there that would allow that .

Speaker 1

Yeah , that would be cool , man , because there's a lot of guys that I'm interviewing right that say you know they're like three sport athlete and then they go to rodeo and it's just like man , that would be awesome to you know be in baseball or football or basketball or some sport that you guys love , and then bring it to the college level and do both .

Yeah Huh , when will you pull the plug ?

Speaker 2

I don't know .

Speaker 1

Ultimate goal right now , just in general school , you know just life , football , rodeo . Ultimate goal right now man At your age doing what you do , what you love , ultimate goal .

Speaker 2

Probably just keep rodeoing and make it to high school finals and wherever they're going this year and either event that I can go in and I'm that's my main goal is focus on that and try and make it there .

Speaker 1

Where do you see yourself in two years ?

Speaker 2

I don't know yet .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

I'm hopefully in college rodeoing and getting a degree for a livestock management program .

Speaker 1

Okay , nice , so you've been thinking about that . Yeah , that's good . All right , I'm going to ask you straight up how your grades .

Speaker 2

They're not as good as they should be . I'm easily a C or B student . It's some of my can take seriously when I want to and then when I get lazy , I just don't want to get it . Don't feel like getting them back up .

Speaker 1

Okay , Well , I work at a high school . I don't teach , but I work at a high school . I'll let you in on something If you don't get good grades , don't let that deter you from going to college . Continue that path , man .

If you listen to Wiley Coyote's episode , he said he was terrible in high school but he grinded it out and he's in his third year of college . Rodeo and kicking butt in college . So , you want to go to college ? Go to college , Wiley rodeo .

Speaker 2

Yes .

Speaker 1

What do parents hope to see you get into man ?

Speaker 2

I don't know . I think they just hope to see me succeed in whatever world I want to go with , whether it's football , rodeo or ranching . Yeah , I know they're going to support me any way I go and help me out to get to the point where I can be successful .

Speaker 1

What did you eat today , man ? Did you eat a peanut butter jelly sandwich today ?

Speaker 2

No , I did not .

Speaker 1

Do you eat peanut butter jelly sandwiches ?

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Yeah , when was the last time you ate a peanut butter jelly sandwich ?

Speaker 2

The last time I ate one was on Saturday .

Speaker 1

Yeah , how did you make that peanut butter jelly sandwich ? Man ?

Speaker 2

A bunch of peanut butter on the bottom and a little bit of jelly on the top , and I like to do add a little something extra in the chocolate chips when we have one Just adds a little bit of extra flavor .

Speaker 1

That extra sweetness , that's genius talking about a sweet tooth . What kind of jelly though .

Speaker 2

Just any jelly , whatever we have in the fridge .

Speaker 1

So you like more peanut butter than jelly ? Yeah , my man . All right , that's cool . Favorite Adam Sandler movie .

Speaker 2

Probably the Water Boy .

Speaker 1

The Water Boy . You said Talladega Nights earlier . Favorite Will Ferrell movie man .

Speaker 2

I probably would say Talladega Nights or shoot . I don't remember what it's called . I think it's the movie with Will Ferrell and a shoot . I can't remember his name .

Speaker 1

Mark Wahlberg , yeah , the other guys .

Speaker 2

Yes .

Speaker 1

Or yeah , I got you dad . I think it's Daddy's Home , or something like that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Daddy's Home . I like that one too . That one's pretty good All right .

Speaker 1

Favorite event outside of yours that you watch .

Speaker 2

Probably Saddlebrom cried .

Speaker 1

All right , man , I'm still trying to figure it out . You like Bearback , bullriding . You quit Bullriding to Bearback , but then you like Saddlebrom .

Speaker 2

Yeah , there's just something about it that's so mesmerizing when they kick and spur real good and make it look pretty . It's just one of the cooler original rodeo events in my opinion .

Speaker 1

If and when you have free time at the rodeo , who's the one person , male or female , that you enjoyed watching ? You can't miss their performance .

Speaker 2

Probably either JC Mike Hezan or Connor Dean .

Speaker 1

Shout out to Connor Dean . Did you know ? I tried to ask him to get on . He's like no , I was like all right , man , I was like all right whatever . So Connor Dean's the real deal . Right , I've been watching him .

Speaker 2

He's coming along very well with the Bullriding .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

He's probably going to be going some places here pretty soon .

Speaker 1

You can tell he has that swag .

Speaker 2

He has that swag doing man .

Speaker 1

Yeah , JC , JC's just humble . Is that ever a man ? He's healing up . I saw that picture that he posted on Instagram and just waiting to see him go back on the Bull . Yeah , All-time favorite rodeo star man .

Speaker 2

Probably Jeff Copenhaver . He's a very well-known rodeo guy and wrote a very good book . I love the concept of the book . He's just very humble about everything . So , yeah , he's by far one of my favorites favorite football player of all time . I probably have to say Cooper Cup . He's a very good player and he came from up here , so I got to say him .

Speaker 1

He does a lot of good man . Yeah , he gives out .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

He gives , he pays it forward and , yeah , he has a great heart .

Speaker 2

Yep .

Speaker 1

What do you see yourself doing five to 10 months from now , besides school , and besides kicking rear and the rodeo scene ?

Speaker 2

Um , probably just working . I like , uh , every morning I get up five and go to work at six till eight , 20 ish , and then I go back to school . So it's it kind of works out because I like , I like to work , working where I'm working at , and , yeah , that's all , almost all I do is work and go to school .

Speaker 1

I was surprised you're here , man , and not crashing out on the couch or something , man . So thank you for your time , man . Yeah , when do you sleep ?

Speaker 2

I sleep a lot whenever my parents drive .

Speaker 1

When you have downtime , yeah , gotcha . And when you crash , you crash , yep Same . I hear that , all right , number one on your bucket list Can be rodeo . It can be life .

Speaker 2

Um , probably competing in uh at the shy in front tier days yeah . Just such a cool concept about uh , the steer leaps 30 feet before either Roper can leave and once I give it comes together , it comes together . Real good , Okay For everybody . So Shia frontier days .

Speaker 1

Yep , how do you get ready for an event ? Football rodeo , I mean , do you , do you get hype , do you ? I don't know if your parents allow you to do , uh , hit some pre-workout , but but do you drink mountain ? Do get all hyped up on mountain , dude . You get hyped up on music . What ?

Um , I don't know , I don't know , I don't know , I don't know , I don't know what's the best way to do it .

Speaker 2

Um , usually before , like a football game and we got to drive somewhere , all uh , throw on my headphones , turn on some music and Kind of sleep . Or I'll stay up and just kind of look at my plays and figure out what we got to do , and I'll usually have A lot of people on the team . I don't know .

Speaker 1

They could . They could have gone to the team without me . Okay , so you do get all hyped up . What about dude ? All right , number one song on your playlist .

Speaker 2

Oh shoot , I don't know . Uh , probably 10 seconds in the saddle by Chris .

Preparation for Rodeo Performances

Speaker 1

When performing ? How do you settle in Before your performance ?

Speaker 2

Um , I don't know , I just get in there and focus on what I'm going to do that I don't know if you saw the unbroken documentary on Cainfield . Yeah , so he's . He talked about how he's rode the horse .

He drew 300 times before he's actually got on and that's what I like to envision me catching this year 40 times before I go rope it , or hitting the kid 80 times before I go play game .

Speaker 1

That's some good stuff , man . That's some good stuff . Yeah , what are you going to do tonight , man ? Are you going to fall asleep , or are you going to go work and do everything else besides sleep ?

Speaker 2

I'm probably going to watch a rodeo or something with my dad or something .

Speaker 1

Do you have any questions ? Do you want to ?

Speaker 2

add anything . Not really .

Speaker 1

You think we dialed it all in .

Speaker 2

Oh yeah .

Speaker 1

You sure I ?

Speaker 2

think so .

Speaker 1

All right , preston , it's been a pleasure . Man , I appreciate your time . I appreciate your parents saying yes and having you on . When it's rodeo time , let me know so I can figure out where you're at and watch it live , if that's okay . Yeah , and personally thank your parents .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I know , I think in two weeks is my second high school rodeo down in Walla Walla .

Speaker 1

Okay .

Speaker 2

And it's all two on the east side over here for high school rodeo .

Speaker 1

All right , this fall .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and then in spring we'll probably have similar , something similar to that .

Speaker 1

Keep me updated . Let me know which one you are going to , because you are going to attend and perform , because I know you're busy . So you're in Walla Walla two weeks , is it two weeks ? Pendleton Roundup .

Speaker 2

I think Pendleton Roundups in one week . I believe that's next week .

Speaker 1

Okay , the finals on the 16th , and so that's okay . I'll look at my schedule and see what I can do , but if you're in Walla Walla , I'll definitely do my best to attend and personally , thank you for being on , and your mom . Do your parents travel with you .

Speaker 2

Yeah , they take me out of the to all my high school rodeos .

Speaker 1

Well , shout out to your parents , man .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

All right , thank you so much . We'll be in touch and have fun playing football this season . Go team and go rodeo . Man . I don't know how you do it , but you do it and man keep doing what you're doing , man .

Speaker 2

Yeah , thank you , yep .
