¶ Hallucinations and Living With Ankylosing Spondylitis
Brandon Roberts how are you ? I'm good dude , I'm doing good yeah . You look you , look , you have me on .
Yeah , you look good compared to some of your pictures and videos and on your Instagram .
Yeah .
Yeah , yeah , Tamp on in your nose bloody messed up toenails or no toenails at all .
Yeah , dude , I that race , that race fucked me up pretty good . I , I don't know , dude , I just been . I've been training really hard since since coconut ended and I've kind of changed a little bit of my diet and stuff , so I've been been trying to make better decisions there . But yeah , no , no tampon today .
Yeah , yeah , they caught a lot of my surprise .
I wore that thing for like . I put that thing in on like night one and I wore , wore all the way till the next day and my nose would just not stop bleeding .
Huh .
And was it the elevation , I don't know it ? Just like it got so dry and then there were just I I don't know what was in there that just kept bleeding and bleeding and then I would like get like a huge blood clot out of it and then it would bleed more .
And I think it's like just the elevation and like that dry , kind of dirty , that like sandy arrow most , and yeah , um so , but I carry , like I always carry like three tampons with me because I mean there's nothing better to stop a blade nose .
So so you're a dude and when you go on a trek , let's say you , I caught you on Timberline . You know you didn't complete it , but you did it , you spent some time there . You , a guy , carry tampons everywhere you go . When you do a truck like that .
It's , yeah , it's in my have a little , um , it's a must . It's a must . It's uh , well , it's in my closet right now , but it's , it's this little plastic bag that it's got like my water filter in it and , um , I think it was like matches in there and then there's tampons in there , for sure , always Okay .
So are you the one that purchased the tampons , um , those ones , I don't know who bought those ones .
I just I sent it . I sent a text message to my team or to my crew and Coco Dona I said I'm out of tampons . I need tampons in a box showed up at the next aid station and I brought them home with me . So All right .
I'm going to ask you , man , is it a heavy flow , a light ?
flow , medium flow , it's it's heavy dude as bad and it's always . It's always my , the left side of my nose , the right is never bad , it's the left side that just . It will not stop bleeding .
So I'm just going to give guys warning . I'm already going to probably lose some listeners , but hey , this is going to be a vulgar , a vulgar episode . Just be , just be warned , you know , and so I'm just getting warning . I should have gave a warning earlier , but yeah , this is definitely going to be explicit . So thank you for um entertaining that question .
Yeah , no problem , dude . I mean , if you're going to post a picture like that , I mean you got to , like , tell the story behind it a little bit . I think so .
Yes , exactly , and thank you for that . Followed your Instagram before Coco Dona and you were training for it . That's how I found you . Your tag is do as is .
Yep .
Right , you're an ultra endurance runner and a trail runner , correct ?
Uh yeah , and then I do some some triathlons . That's how I like got started in this . But , um , now I really just like I really want to focus on this . Like 200 mile distance , like that's what I really want to do .
Okay , and you're ? You're in the right mode , man . Yeah , I mean you're doing timberline training nonstop and you are pacing at Bigfoot next week .
Correct . Uh yeah , so um Helgy Oliveson . I'm sure a lot of listeners probably know who he is . He also he also has spawned the lightest , and , um , I accrued him at Coco Dona here before last , and then he has Bigfoot . He's doing the triple crown this year . He has Bigfoot relieving next Thursday , Um , and then I'm going to be with him the whole week .
I I got to look at my sections but I think I have like 60 miles with him or something and I want to do . I want to do Bigfoot next year . So I need to go see this , the logistics of this race , because it sounds pretty hectic .
So Okay , yeah , I got a couple uh stories on the podcast about how trippy it is at Bigfoot , especially uh the later half . You know how people trip balls on . You know that's what you have . Helgy told me about that , yeah , a native area . And they start tripping balls Like they . They tell you on the podcast . I'm like , wow , man , yeah .
Helgy told me one of the sections he's like this is , um , he's like I'm going to be hallucinating , like this is a terrible section for hallucinating .
So just like , be ready and honestly like hallucinating was one of my favorite things about yeah , Cocodona , I had never hallucinated before while running , and when it finally started to happen , it was just like the I don't know . I thought it would be kind of scary or give me anxiety , but it's not at all like that . It's it's very unique experience .
It's weird , it's very , it's very odd .
Yes .
Yes , yes , one of my friends that he's done bigfoot and he told me that hallucinating was his favorite part and I thought he was just nuts . And then , when it , when it happened to me , that's the first thing I thought about . I'm like . I was like oh man , plumbers , right , dude , this is , this is awesome .
So , so , so you said it you have spondylitis . Yep Right .
Yeah , I have , I have . I have ankylosing spondylitis . Yeah .
Right , I can't say the A word , so , um , thank you for saying that , so I just stick with what I can't pronounce .
Yeah , no problem , dude , I just I just called it AS . Like , when I talk about it on Instagram , I just refer to it as AS , but it's called ankylosing spondylitis .
Okay , when did you or when did you find out you had it ? When were you diagnosed with it ?
So I was diagnosed six years ago . So I was 34 , six and a half years ago , like 33 , 34 years old , but I had star . I had had problems with it in my very early twenties , but I did .
I had no idea what it was , because I used to , I used to snowboard a lot , I used to wakeboard a lot and like I was very good at it , and I did those things like like how I run , I just like I did them like hard and I just thought it was always like associated with some kind of sport or I would crash and my , and then I wouldn't be able to walk
and I just I just always thought that I just kind of had a bad back and that I was just hard on my body .
And it just kind of went off and on and I even I became a career firefighter , paramedic , and it didn't really affect me then either , like every once in a while , like we would have a fire or something in my back would get sore , and but I just thought , like man , I just kind of have a bad back .
And it wasn't until later on in my thirties when I was like I really need to figure out what is wrong , because I wanted it fixed .
So what did it take for you to actually go in and so ?
I was training for a triathlon and I did a bike ride and then I did a run , and then I went home and then I could not walk . And then I woke up the next day and I could not walk and at this point I had left the fire service and I had become a tattoo artist . And that's what I do now is I tattoo for a living ?
I couldn't tell .
And so I couldn't walk . And I was , like you know , my back by then had taken a lot of things away from me in my life , like I couldn't snowboard how I wanted to anymore . And I said , you know , I'll be damned if it's going to take away this triathlon stuff from me .
And so I made an appointment with a rebound , who are like the sports specialists in this kind of region over here , and they diagnosed me through a blood test is how you can find it and then I was sent to a rheumatologist and then that's where I began like treatment and stuff and I went to physical therapy and basically I started a whole new way of life .
I remember leaving that doctor's office and I just was like I can either be the victim here and be angry and why me ? Or I can accept this and adapt to it . And that took years to that . That's been a very long process to get where I'm at now , so I didn't just start running hundreds of miles Like it was a very , very slow process .
Oh , totally understand .
Yeah .
Understand man so high praise to find all , all odds on this debilitating disease . So , dude , I mean basically you're taking the bull by his horns and making it your bitch .
Pretty much dude every single day . That is . That's my goal Every day I wake up is I'm going to see , like I'm not , I'm not going to let it win , like I refuse to let it win , and I will , I will chase it into the grave , dude .
Good , Very similar stories , man . Like a lot of the listeners that will be listening to this know a little bit about my story , but the close ones do know . And yeah , definitely very , very similar man For real .
Yeah , like there's a point .
I mean like there was a point when , like after I got diagnosed and I would continue to do these triathlons , like I couldn't run , so like I would walk the running part of a race and like I would finish dead last , and I'm like 36 years old and I'm like walking across and I was pissed and it , like it made me feel like shame and I just was like I'm
I'm not stopping , I'm like I'm just going to keep going , no matter how bad this gets , how bad I feel about myself or what , I'm just going to keep on going . And now it's turned into like this incredible life that that , like I , just I didn't know was possible , right .
So Right , okay , you got a whole nother look in life .
Yeah , and I , and so I remember reading , like for a long time I like I chose to remain naive to AS and I didn't want to meet anybody that had it . I didn't want to see anybody , I didn't want to know anything about it . Yeah , and I remember .
Finally , I read something and this lady was was talking about how she wanted to , like say thank you to the disease and I was like this lady is fucking nuts , yeah . And . But now six , seven years later , it makes sense . I have done so much more with this disease than I would have ever done without it .
But you have to choose that mindset , you have to choose that life , and it's hard but it's possible . And you're doing it though man , yeah , yeah , and I'm like . I'm like , I'm just a guy . There's like , there's nothing special about me , like I'm totally ordinary . I would actually say like , as far as like running or athletics go , I'm definitely below average .
I just refuse to quit Gotcha , I want to say below average .
I mean not a below average runner out there goes to coca-dona , I would . I would say below average , like talent wise , but I would say I would say I would say I would be better .
I would say I would say I would be more talent wise , but like maybe in my head like above average , like I just believe I can do anything Gotcha , so maybe maybe that . Yeah Was it tough at first to realize hey , I can do it what ?
what do you mean Like , did you fight with yourself at the beginning , were you ? Was it tough to say hey or believe in yourself ?
The first couple of years , like I was definitely scared that like , oh , I'm gonna do more damage or oh , I'm gonna do this , or I'm gonna get hurt , or my body's gonna let me down , I'm gonna be out in the middle of the woods and I'm not gonna be able to walk .
I definitely fought with that for a couple of years and I remember I finally realized I was out one day . I was out walking and my back hurts so bad and I finally realized that it doesn't matter what I do , it's gonna hurt . It's gonna hurt for the rest of my life . And so in that moment I just started running .
It was like something just happened and I just chose this just like fuck this mentality towards all things and I started running . And then I started running more , and running more , and then doing bigger races , and I just and now I have this like I will not be stopped type of mentality , and it's empowering once you get to that
¶ Overcoming Challenges and Finding Self-Transformation
place . But in the beginning , the first couple of years were very hard .
Yes , Just thought I'd ask you man , yes , Glad you had me .
I definitely battled with like a lot of demons in the first couple of years and there were like a couple very , very low points where I mean I was just like just in tears on the floor and I'm like I just I don't wanna do this anymore , like I can't do this anymore , I can't do any , and I just was like I just wanna be done with this shit .
And but then you know , you pick yourself up . Tomorrow is a new day and you can again and you just keep chipping away at it .
So after Coca-Cola you had some videos that I mean , you were literally crying and it almost sounded like you doubted yourself , but then you said you're gonna go back and you're gonna conquer it . You're gonna continue to conquer it .
So I learned and I love this saying you don't know what you don't know and I went into Coca-Cola . I didn't know what I didn't know about the race . In that race I learned so many things . And I was thinking about this on my way to work today , like what am I going to say about Coppadonna ?
When he asked me and you know , I mean I DNFed at mile 142.2 , but I got exactly what I wanted out of that race . I wanted to go as far as I possibly could at that point in time in my life and that is as far as I could go . And it was so emotional for me to feel like I had failed .
But realizing that there's a difference between like like failing and just saying I'm done and actually physically going to like as far as your body could go . And what happened was I didn't like . I mean I didn't even know how to train . I mean my first 50 K was like a year and a half ago .
I haven't been running a long time and but my personality is to just jump into like . If I'm in , I'm in , like . If we're drinking , I'm drinking , yeah , and if we're getting tattooed , I'm getting tattooed . And if I'm running , I'm running hundreds of miles .
That's just the way I am , and so I jump into things and then I figure it out , and right now I'm just I'm figuring it out and I'm figuring out Coppadonna , and . But it was just a magical journey and a complete like transformation of self , even though I didn't finish the race .
With that magical but kind of not , you didn't finish the race . Do you still have that belief in doubt ?
I do not doubt myself anymore . I believe fully that I have what I need to do the race and it . Yeah , it comes down to running a little bit , but it comes down to more of finding a way to keep yourself moving when you don't want to . That became the hardest thing . I got you and like nothing worked nothing .
Like there's no song you could play , there's no person I could talk to , there's no and Chad Wright has talked about this before too there's no like motivational quote . When you get to that point in yourself , there is nothing that will keep you moving forward , except this like your will inside yourself to just move forward , move forward .
Yeah Well , when you said you know I would probably ask you a question at Coca Dona , I hope , hopefully , you didn't think I was going to doubt you and speak lowly of you . All I have to say is you started Coca Dona . You got to remember , man , how many people did Coca Dona .
I think there were like 205 . How many DNFs , not including you ? 27% of the field DNF , I think .
How many people win as far ?
as you , I don't know , dude and I think what really got me was like I just I don't have a lot of experience and my body doesn't have that foundation in it , and my feet , my feet just got I mean my feet got crushed by that terrain out there , and what happened was I didn't say I'm done , I just what you know .
What we should do is you should just let me tell the story of when I DNF .
I want to do you , but first I just , I just want you to . I just want you to know how many people in the States , the United States , didn't do that that week .
I thought about that too , and okay , I and you know , man , at the end of the day , at the end I'm still so hard on myself about I feel like I let people down and I let myself down and I let other people with AS down and I'm like , but I'm just like no dude , and I'm like you .
You didn't like you got what you wanted out of it , and now you know how to , you know , go further into this 200 mile distance .
So tell us about the DNF man , the tiny DNF , the DNF dude , where do I start with that
¶ DNF and 200-Mile Race Journey
?
The DNF started as I was coming down Mingus Mountain into . Jerome and what happened was my feet got crushed and I could not move as fast as I needed to , as I had planned on , and so therefore , I could not rest like I had planned on , and I got into Jerome and I got like a 15 minute break , I think , after like doing one of the .
I think one of the hardest sections of the race from down Mingus into Jerome is I mean , nobody talks about how difficult that section is , it just crushes you , especially if you do it in the daytime , because it's just exposed and then .
So then I made it to Dead Horse and I think I took like an 11 minute break because I was getting so close to these cutoffs and I hadn't slept .
I had slept like two hours , I think , and I was like 60 plus hours into this race and I was with my pacer , joni and I love Joni , she's so awesome and we left Dead Horse and I was hallucinating and falling asleep while I was running and she started filming me and some of those videos are on my Instagram and I'm just talking shit about these two hundred
mile distances and I'm so glad she recorded it because it's just so like raw and unfiltered of how I felt in that moment . And so we're going , and I'm at that point I had taken my watch off because I was getting so mad at my pace . Yeah , I took my watch off , I didn't want to see it . And I'm moving , I'm moving , I'm moving . And I told Joni .
I said I have to sleep , I have to sleep for 20 minutes , I'm going to fall over . Like I , like you , get to a point where , like you , have to sleep , right . And so I found the softest dirt I've ever been in my entire life and I got out my baby and I fell asleep instantly .
And then I hear this voice and I mean it's probably about two o'clock in the morning . I hear this voice say Brandon , and I kind of get up and it's Hector , a different Hector , yeah . And then behind him is someone else and she comes up to me and I kind of I'm up and I go who are you ?
And she goes I'm Marla , I'm the sweeper , and I'm like , oh , dang it . And she , and then she's like you're our DNF , you're cut off now .
And I was like , oh well , I'm going fucking back to sleep and I was planning on dude taking like a five hour nap , like I was going to sleep and I was so exhausted and she said , well , if you choose to do that , we're going to call rescue and they're going to come get you and drive you off the race course .
And I said , well , I got myself into here , I'm going to get myself out of here .
And so I got up and I slammed a bunch of caffeine goose and we left , and then my crew , matt and Adam , found a Forest Service Road and came and picked me up , and there's a video of me on my Instagram walking to the SUV and like the sunrise is like beautiful and I'm like I'm moving as fast as I can possibly move .
Yeah , and it's so painfully slow and like it's so hard to describe that that pain in your feet it's just . Every step is agony and looking back now , based on all the things I didn't know , that I know now that race for me was over before it even started . I don't think I had a chance . Look how far you went , though .
Look how far I went , which really makes me feel like I can find a place in this distance . I am obsessed with the 200-mile distance . It's different , it's different and it takes you to this place in yourself that I'm convinced the only way to access it is to do things like this , and it's incredible .
¶ Overcoming Challenges for Family
Two things . Did you know Mike was going to drop ? He missed a Nade station and he was going to drop . He had to go two miles back .
I did not know that .
He was going to DNF but then he ended up winning it . That's inside scoop . If you listen to his episode .
I did not know that .
Don Raikelt told me that , and I was like Mike , is this true ? He's like ? Mike said yes . I was like oh , thank you for being honest man . So you are , you know , human .
You are human and the other thing that I try and keep in mind is like I think , when you're running this type of miles and terrain and you tend to be very , very hard on yourself and like 200 miles for a human- being is a long fucking ways .
I mean even 50 miles , oh yeah , and it's like I feel like I begin to sell myself short and like you are , you are and it's I try and not do that . And so , for anybody that's listening , that's like oh , I'm only doing a 50 K . I always , when people say that to me , I always correct them .
I don't say you're not doing only a 50 K , dude , you're running 31 miles . Like , yes , that's far , yes , that's something to be proud of you , say your pace .
you took off your watch pace . Because of your pace , what was your ?
pace . The last pace I remember moving at was 32 , 30 miles .
All right . So at certain spots , average pace . I've I've interviewed a lot of people who completed in Coca-Cola this year and their average pace in certain spots , especially uphill , was 27 32 .
Yeah , I .
I said that was the toughest part of it . So , dude , you believe it or not , you have it dialed in . You just have to dial it in your head , man . Yeah , it can conquer this .
So now the other thing that did get me was the way I trained . I did not train enough , actual just running , just running on flat Run , it just getting good at running . And now my buddy runner , plumber , he's coaching me and he just sends me my workouts every week and I'm getting good at running .
Yeah , and I think because when it came in Coca-Cola , I can climb , dude , like I can climb for days , like that's good . But when it comes to the runnable sections , I sucked , I was terrible . It was so frustrating to not be able to move like I wanted to and I told myself , when I get back here next year this will not happen .
When I get to the runnable section , I will run . And now I'm like I'm focusing more on running and like like Michael McKnight talks about , like strength training , like lifting weights .
Dude , he tore it up . He was the freshest on his legs his whole life . He said man .
Yeah , I'm lifted weights now and I feel that changing my running and but , yes , a lot of it , I think after a certain distance , maybe 100 miles , something . It's all in your head , dude . Oh yeah , it's all in your head .
Yeah , so well , you got it , man , and you just need to dial it in that brain of yours that look what you're going through , what look what you do day in , day out . Yeah , and you're out there . A lot of other people aren't . But , dude man , what you did is it speaks volume .
So thanks dude .
After trashing the hell out of your feet , you end up doing timber line , which can tear up your feet . It's no easy feet , right ? It's none whatsoever . But you end up doing some of it with a buddy that's always around , Matt Mankey man .
That's my boy , the mad man Matt Mankey .
Yes , it's special for old special forces guy , or what .
Yeah , he was in . Well , he doesn't like to talk about it much , but he was in the Secret Service . He's , he's . You would never guess it when you meet him , but I would yeah .
You give him shout outs and you do say something in that matter of you know how much of a badass he is because of this past year , yeah , and he really is .
The whole reason why I even started trail running , because I had done a half iron man in September and the races were over and I was like I need something to focus on this this winter . And I had seen him at the trail a few times just running Like I mean , he's nuts and he looks nuts when you meet him .
And my dad had his phone number and so I got his phone number and I called him and I said , hey , this brandon from the trail , I the guy with all the tattoos , do you think I could run 31 miles ? And he called me back and he's like I don't see why not . And so he started kind of Show me what to do .
And then we became like really , really fast friends Gotcha , and we're very like minded and we love like being out in the woods just doing gnarly shit that like most people don't do , and he lives about 10 minutes away and so , yeah , he's like my later in life best friend . I love that guy Like like a brother .
Yeah dude , like , like , like I'm the oldest of three yeah , I would imagine that that's probably like he's like my older brother . If I had an older brother , what that would be like . Like I look up to him and like I call him for advice and like I'm like hey , dude , what do you think about this ?
Or any help with this , or like , but we , just we we're always hanging out , yeah .
Shaking Bake .
Yeah , dude , yeah .
Yeah , shaking Bake Portemans , yeah , yeah . So shout out to Matt man . I got to shout him out because I can tell with your adventures , especially Instagram posts , that dude , he puts all , he puts them all together .
He does all that in Gaia and then he sends it to me and he's like hey man , my house 430, . We're going here and I'm like sounds great , dude , like all whatever he rides , I go and do , okay .
So he's ride or die , and both you guys are both ride and die . So , yeah , I can see it . So shout out , matt , man , with everything that we've said , right , right , cocoa Dona , you're the disease , debilitating disease that you have and conquering , or you know , you're making it your bitch , not the other way around .
Right , yes , how do you do what you do , man ? How do you do it day in , day out ?
Well , I have man , that's it . But that's such a good question . I I have no choice . I have a son who is 11 . And this is a genetic disease and he doesn't know it yet , but at some point in his life he may have this too . And nobody showed me how to navigate this disease . I figured I thought my life was over .
Then I decided it wasn't and I just I figured out how to navigate this disease and still live like this amazing big life . And I , if , if he does happen to have this like I want him to see and know that he's going to be just fine , he could still do anything he wants , because he can just be like Look at what my dad did .
Yeah , and he , I mean he's 11 . And he paced me at this 50 miler , I did a month ago and he ran his first half marathon Nice . He wants to do an Ironman when he's 18 . And but he is one of the biggest driving forces for me , so that's your why ?
That's my next question .
Yeah , that's like I need to pave that way for him .
¶ Maintaining Determination and Setting Goals
And the other part is like I just I want to be like one of the Hop people with a S . I mean , honestly , dude , they're like just doesn't give a fuck . Like I'm not stopping because , yeah , for a couple of years , this disease it makes you feel like you can't do anything .
It makes you feel like brittle , like your body's going to break , and it's such a terrible feeling .
It just it takes everything from you and I'm I refuse to ever feel that again , like I'm in charge , right , I run this show , not the disease , and I might be slower some days , I might have a harder time moving some days , Some days might be harder than others , but I'm still going to do whatever I have to do .
And it's just like this Mindset or mentality that I have just hammered into myself day in and day out . And as the years go by , it just it becomes who you are Like . So that's awesome . Shout out to your son , man , especially finishing his first half marathon at 11 . Come on .
It was a trail . It was a trail marathon too . Single , single track . Yeah , he was pacing me doing these just like . All right , I'm going to go , I'm going to go , I'm going to go , I'm going to go .
I'm going to go . He was pacing me doing these just like . All right , dad , come on . Man , it's like Pick it up . You got like 4.5 miles left .
Let's finish strong , but not too strong man , he's , he's .
Goggins yeah , man , he's like stay hard . Like he goes around like saying Chad right Quotes and shit .
He's so funny man . Oh , he's wise for his age , yeah , all right . So every day , and with your disease is a different day , and I think that's a good thing , and I think that's a good thing I think that's a good thing and pain wise .
Some days Could be some symptoms free . Right , I am , I want to . I am never symptom free .
Okay , I always in some sort of pain and I think Some people on Instagram might think that Like there's some kind of magic answer or that Maybe it's not as bad , or like I assure you it's like you know , it's just , it's like you know it's like you know , it's like you know , it's like you know .
I'm not saying that you're terrible , but I say lighter . Let's say lighter than yeah . Okay , a lighter flow dude . Yeah , yeah , I like that . Thank you , we're both . We are just alike dude , all right . So how do you maintain on the trail and in ?
just regular day . So I I'm not afraid to be able to do it . I mean , I'm not afraid to do it as far as , like my self care goes , like there's things that like I really I do and if I neglect them I feel it the next day .
So like routine , routine , like I will stretch every , every single night , for 30 , 40 minutes and I foam roll every night and then I , most nights I will take a bath and most nights back because my body hurts from what I did to it that day , and then these things alleviate that and gets me ready for the next day . It's monotonous , dude , yeah .
At times it's very frustrating , but I know that if I neglect it then tomorrow it's going to be harder , and so I just , I just do it , I do what I have to do and , um , but every once in a while , man , I'll have a couple great days and what's really weird .
Another reason why I'm kind of like obsessed with this distance is I found the further that I go , the further I swim , the further I ride my bike , the further I run , the better I feel the next couple of days , and I like less pain , better movement . I think that movement is the best medicine for a disease like this yes , okay , yeah , all right .
Has anybody said you ? You've seen you run angry .
I've had a couple people , a couple of clients that I've tattooed . That are they yeah , and I do I have ? I like I I carry some demons with me for sure , and that is where I go to get them out .
And I didn't even realize it until like a week or so ago that running these last couple of years has been like a coping coping mechanism for me for for some of the things in my life that I don't speak about publicly . And now I know that because my reasons for running are changing and but yeah , I can see that dude .
All your posts , man , you just are angry . You're giving the bird , but . But , dude , it's like it's your angry , but we know you're on a mission .
I'm on a , I am on a mission , dude , and I assure you , Determinate .
I'm going to say determine , not angry . You're just a a , a , a , a running runner .
I'm very , very determined . But people that know me , people that know me well , I'm very kindhearted .
I'm very funny kind of , I'm very mellow , but when I'm running , running is just like a vessel that I use to take back my life , take back the things that have been taken from me in my life through substance abuse or AS I take those things back and it's very heavy , emotional , like experience .
And yeah , dude , sometimes I get , I get mad , I don't know that's , I'm just very passionate .
All right , going to ask you this one question when ? When do you know you made it , you accomplished something .
When , so my ?
What's it going to take for you to understand ?
You're making it , and you made it so for me that is like whatever I have set out to do , whatever like goal I have set in front of me . When I accomplished that goal like when I did my first half Ironman I made it . In that moment I made it . I crossed that finish line and I realized , man , I have been selling myself so short for so many years .
I can do so much more . Then I was on to the next . I live in these moments of accomplishment but then they're gone and I need more .
I think it's part of my maybe alcoholic brain , my let's say addictive brain , my addictive brain , because I have it too , man , if I am a downer , I didn't finish 100-miler and I was just doubting myself . Doubting myself , conquered a 12-hour . Now I'm going to do a 32-hour next week , the same weekend that you guys are doing .
You're pacing for a big foot , but we do that to ourselves . I get it , but go ahead .
No , I live in these little moments of accomplishments , but then I know that I need to do more . It's always more when I go back and I do coca-dona . That's going to be incredible for a few days , okay , and then I'm going to want more .
Would it help if your son and I'm just saying because he's a badass himself what if you said , dad , you made it , you're going to believe him ?
I know that he already looks up to me so much . I know that , okay , I know exactly what you're saying . But I just have this like I don't know if it's an innate desire or the obsessive quality where I just I want the most out of myself .
I want out of this life that I can get , because when you have a few years in your life where you really believe that your life is over , that your life is small , that you're never going to be able to do certain things , when that is taken , it changes you .
I want everything and I believe I can get it , and that's why I have such huge goals , but I think it's also important to surround yourself with like-minded people , positive thinking people . You know what I'm saying ? Yeah , so it's like I have not gotten to where I am at by myself , by any means .
With that said , though , with that said , and what we've been talking about , running-wise , do you feel you made it Running no ?
dude .
Come on man .
No , I am just getting started . So , like triathlon stuff for me , I feel like I've made it in triathlon . I feel like I can go race any distance triathlon and I'll be fine , okay , but I want that . I don't know . Like I don't know what 250 miles is going to do to me . I don't know what 200 miles is going to do to me . I don't . I like that unknown .
I like living in the , you know , like stocking the impossible , as Matt always says . That's where I like to be . Like , if I sign up for an Ironman , I kind of I have an idea , I know how it's going to go . Yeah , I've made it in that arena For me , like I'm never going to win one . I'm not fast , but I can go do one anytime I want .
You don't have to be fast to make it or to finish . By the way , no , yes .
And so . But I understand what you're saying , and so in triathlon and that stuff , like I would say , yeah , I've made it , like I feel accomplished for myself , like yes .
Okay , personally
¶ Challenges and Community in Ultra Running
. What about personally , especially with all the setbacks that you've had in life and where you were before now , do you feel like you made it ? Honestly , I'm probably asking too much of a question .
No , no , no , no . I think on a personal level , like there's some things that like I can't like talk about right now but you don't have to like your tattoo artist .
You know you're making it . You have friends like Matt and dude . You're pacing Hell . You go , come on . I couldn't even get him on my podcast . You need to tell him . I said hi and I'll hold it at your back .
I will talk . I will talk with him , dude , Like it's like yeah , I mean , I feel like as far as like having like people around me that like care about me and love me , and I have made it .
Yes .
But personally , as far as like what I'm trying to do as a person and where I'm at in my personal life , like I and I told like you before we started recording like kind of what's going on a little bit , I'm building a whole new life , and so on that level , like I'm just kind of getting started , like I feel like I'm kind of like finding myself again and
but I do feel very , very fortunate that like for some reason , I have found these like incredible people in the ultra running community , like my buddy Adam and Matt and Plummer and and Helgi and all these people that I can reach out to if I need things . And it's really an incredible community and that's also what I like so much about .
It is like you go to an Ironman , I feel like it's kind of like every man for himself .
Oh yeah , you go a road race , yeah , marathon , yeah , yeah , yeah .
You go , you go to these hundred mile , 200 mile races . It's everyone is there to help everyone else . Brotherhood , camaraderie .
There really is a brotherhood , and I didn't feel that in the fire service , but I feel that in this community and I think that's another reason why I'm so drawn to it , and like there's a lot of people out there fighting their own demons that have chosen to run hundreds of miles , and it's I align with those kind of people , like I feel like I finally have
fit in in a place .
So personally made it I'm .
I'm getting there , all right . As far as running goes , I'm just just getting started , and so can I tell you was one of my favorite story of coconut , go for it . While we're talking about , like , what I love about this community , so go for it .
It was the first day , and everyone talks about how hard the first day of coconut is on this course and it's not easy , right , it's very challenging , but , like , I'm very good at climbing , so it was not as hard as I thought it was going to be , but it really broke off a lot of people and so I came up on this guy and he was sitting there on a rock
and he looked like shit man , and we were like 2728 miles into this thing and I was like , dude , do you need something ? Man ? He's like , well , what do you got ? And I'm like , well , I got , I got everything , dude . I got salt , I got a leave , I got , I got food , I got everything . What do you want ? I got champon , I got tampons dude .
He's like you got you have chips . And I go yeah , dude , I got a shitload of potato chips . I love chips . I always have chips , and I handed them a bag of chips and you would thought I had given this guy a million dollars . So I give him these chips , he eats them . He eats them .
I go on , I'm coming down Mingus Mountain on my way to Jerome and this I had this is like where I started , I think , like some a little bit of like heat exhaustion and the sleep deprivation was setting in , and this is where , kind of like the wheel started to come off for me .
And this guy comes up behind me and he's like he's like hey , man , you'll be fine , dude , this is just a low , you're just in a low right now . I look at him and I go you're the fucking guy I gave my chips . And he goes yeah , dude , you saved my life , dude , with those chips .
And so we were just bullshitting and like I'll never forget , like where we're out in the trail and he was moving so well and I was moving so poorly . And he's like you're just in a low , dude , you're in a low , you'll be fine , just ride this wave and it'll be gone and then you'll be up . So that like changed my mindset , so I kept moving .
And then hour later , dude , he's sitting down next to a tree . He looks like shit . And I walk over to him like you need anything , bro , he's like no , I'm like . I'm like dude , it's a low dude , it'll pass , right , I mean , that's what she told me .
Like he said fuck you Huh .
No , he's like it'll pass , dude , I'll see you , I'll see you up here . And so I keep going and , dude , I mean this people don't talk about the descent down right you can get it is like it is the toughest 15 miles I've ever done in my entire life .
Oh yeah , and so we're coming down and then he comes past me and we're talking , and we're talking about how awful we feel and we keep talking and keep talking and like I've never met this guy in my life , dude , and we're like developing this , like this strong bond . And so then I make it to the age station .
I make it to Jerome , mile 125 , and I take I have one hour on the cutoff , I take a 15 minute break , I leave and his name is Chris .
I see him walking up into the age station and he walks over to me and he gives me like the biggest hug and he starts crying and he says I love you , brent , and I'm like I don't even know this guy , right , and I'm like I fucking love you too , dude .
And then I told his pacer because I knew he was getting close on the cutoff and I knew like how he was moving and I looked at his pacer and I said you like , you got to get him out of this fucking age station , get him in there , get him what he needs and get him out and he DNF there and then like it just I don't know , dude it like that connection
, like that primal connection with other human beings that are suffering like you right , that is what draws me to this distance . There's nothing like it .
I got you Nothing All right .
¶ Diet, Movies, Trails, and Adventure Plans
So early on we talked about how you've changed your , your whole , your lifestyle from working out , lifting weights , more nutrition . Has that changed a bit ?
So I don't . I do not eat gluten , I do not eat dairy , because a lot of people that have auto immune diseases also have problems with their stomach , except for Helgi Dude . Helgi eats whatever the fuck he wants and he has no problems , it's Helgi .
I've heard stories about Helgi man and yeah , yeah , yeah , he eats whatever he wants dude .
But so I don't eat any dairy , I don't eat any gluten and I have gotten rid of most processed sugar , which really helps . And right now I try and really like after dinner , I try and not eat , eat anything until the next day and I just I feel so much lighter on my feet when I'm eating healthy .
Well , that goes my question , man . I normally ask this stable question , now the people who listen , they're not going to be like dude . You asked him the question , now the listeners will know why to ask you how to build the peanut butter jelly sandwich . So you just can't eat it . So , guys , listeners , don't ask , don't ask , just listen .
So what do you eat on the trail ?
So I eat , I like Laura bars , because they're soft .
Olds , quick though , man .
Oh , they do . I like Laura bars and then I like spring energy , but I can't eat . I found out in Cocodona . I can't eat too many of them or they make me poop like terrible . So I found that out at like mile 68 , dude going up to camp Kepa , oh , my trust of art .
Can't trust a car dude .
It was like it was for probably that shit literally didn't end until 20 miles later . It was awful , and I love fruit snacks . I always got fruit snacks and then peanut butter sandwich and chips . I always have chips .
Whoa whoa peanut butter . Whoa , whoa , whoa . So you do eat peanut butter sandwiches .
I eat gluten-free bread Do you put jelly on it . No , jelly , I don't like jelly on them .
Okay , so all right , so it's just so you do . So it's just a peanut butter .
It's just a peanut butter dude .
No , okay , all right , I gotta ask you , is it a lot of peanut butter ?
It's a shitload of peanut butter . It's a lot of peanut butter .
There you go . That's the answer , listeners , I got it . Thank you , yeah , hey , it's a serious question , man , it's a serious question .
Chips dude . I always have chips , so if you watch my Instagram , you know I like chips , I think .
Your go-to flavor .
Oh dude , I like them all , man . I like salt and vinegar , I like barbecue . Probably , though , I would say , the best after lots of miles is sour cream and onion .
Oh yeah , ruffle , or just lace .
Just lace lace .
Yeah , favorite Adam Sandler movie oh man .
That's it . What about ? It's not a movie ? What about Toll Booth , willie you ?
know , from the his CD or whatever . Oh yeah , yeah , yeah , you're bringing it back . Some people bring it back in . Man , it's just like all right , I got you Toll Booth Willie , dude .
I mean , that's a classic Favorite movie , though , dude .
You're bringing it back man .
I might have to go like if I had to sit down and watch one right now , dude , I would probably pick Happy Gilmore . That's a good . That's a good one . That's a solid movie .
Okay , Somebody told me the other day , told me by surprise , what they were watching . It was Chuck and Larry . I was like what ? You're the first man I love that movie .
I mean , I've seen that a few times .
Yeah , it gets better and better every time you see new nuances , man , and it's just crazy , dude , it's crazy .
Or dude that basketball one is on Netflix the Hustle .
So that's the type of movie yeah yeah , what is your favorite trail in and around Washington Oregon ? Favorite trail and mountains ? Let's go trail first .
Oh man , my favorite trail . I really , I mean , I haven't ran a ton of them , I've ran a lot of them . I really like Don't say do it no I really like the Cape Horn trail . It's not very long , but I like that , and anything around mountain Well , no , that's . And then I like the Tarbell , where the Hell's Bells races .
Yeah .
I gotta give a shout out due to the Bibblwack racing . I love those guys . The Tarbell trail up there , Bells Mountain Trail that's probably my favorite Around here . Like it's got like , the wildflowers are awesome .
Okay . Just look at you a hard ass talking about wildflower man .
Dude , I love plants . I have probably like 75 plants in my house .
Yeah , okay , I love plants . Plant dad , all right . All right , favorite mountain ? I mean , you do conquer mountains , right ? Do you summit mountains ?
I don't summit mountains , I like run around the trails on them . That , like Matt makes for us on Gaia , and my favorite is anything around Mount St Helens . Dude , that is tough terrain out there .
Yeah , lewitt trails man . It's underrated . That is some top and deceiving .
And I mean it's not really a mountain but up in the gorge on the Washington side table mountain is Like . I can't believe that that type of challenging terrain is so close to us . It's like 40 minutes from my house . It's so hard .
Yeah . Oh yeah , dog mountain too .
That's the only one I haven't done . I've never done dog mountain Okay .
Next , besides Bigfoot and pacing the 60 miles that you're gonna conquer right , what's your next planned adventure before the end of the year , man ?
So I have August 26th , the Oregon Cascades 100 .
You're doing that .
Yes , and that's gonna be . I think that will be the hardest thing I've ever done , because the cutoffs are very fast .
Crazy fast . That's what I was like . I was gonna sign up and like nope .
They're fast cutoffs and that's what I've been training for . And running faster and I plan on I mean I'll have like a good plan as to how I wanna race , but I'm planning on putting my head down for 32 hours and not stopping .
And because I'm slower , I've gotten really good at like trying to live with the mindset of you don't get to rest , like you don't get to sit down , you don't get to take 30 minutes at an aid station , like those are not options for me . I don't get to rest . So , but that's what I love , dude .
I love that challenge , that like let's see how far I can go , let's get close , let's have these cutoffs , let's pick something hard . So that's like what I'm really training hard for
¶ Running Goals and Mountain Conquests
. Okay .
That's out of Oak Ridge , right Around that area .
So it starts in Sisters , oregon , sisters , yeah , and then I haven't looked yet where the finish line is , but Okay .
Yeah , oak Ridge man , some of those races out there , you know , south of Springfield and Eugene man , or Southeast or East of Springfield , dude , check out that terrain , man . That terrain is crazy , insane .
It's right down the road , you know where you're from and everything Like check that out . The tougher the better , dude .
Yeah .
Like that's what and it's like I like to just see , I like to find out what I'm made up , dude , and like in Cocodona dude , like I learned what I was made up at that point in my life and what I learned is that I have more work to do , so Well , you're doing it , you're on the right track , and after your race you got to go to the brewery and have
the best clam chowder in the Pacific .
Northwest dude . All right Three Creeks Brewery wins awards so much .
Where is it at ? Where is it at , Sisters oh three ?
Okay , I'll check it out . Check it out . Not condoning the beer Congrats , by the way , the 12 years of sobriety congrats . But dude , they're food , that clam chowder . If you are a clam chowder fan like myself , bro , I hey yeah , that's clam chowder . They don't even , they can't even go on the coast .
Maybe I'll go . I'll go there on Friday , dude , when I get into town , all right , yeah .
You , dude , it's the greatest clam chowder ever . But yeah , dude , I'm pretty sure you're gonna conquer it . You just do those cutoff times . I was like I was gonna sign up for it , Like , nah , we're good .
The cutoffs dude and it's like it gives me anxiety when I get close to them . But I'm just like I'm a big dude , like I'm six , two 220 pounds and like I'm just like I'm not built to run fast . I have to work really hard to run like a 930 mile .
Right , I got you , I got you . There's a way , there's ways , man , Trust me , I'm doing it and I know , dude , I know the way I am .
If there's a way , I will find it . Yeah .
You know what's your ultimate goal , man In , let's say , in the running world , in the running world .
I want to do Poca-dona and then I wanna do the triple crown in 2025 . And then after that , I don't really know , I wanna do the triple crown . I know that I can do it and I just wanna be like . I wanna be like a very high achiever for people with AS to like look at and see what's possible .
And I think that , like , sometimes people they just need to see something to believe it , myself included and when you see something done , then maybe someone will say maybe I can do that too . And so in the running world is I wanna do Poca-dona and I just I wanna have a place in these 200 mile races .
I just think that the people there are just incredible people . I want to have a place there . That's what I want .
Number one on your bucket list . Bucket list for anything , anything . Your number one that you said , whether it personal or , you know , gonna conquer something like a mountain or trail or race . I know Poca-dona is probably on your bucket list , but it's not number one . So what is number one ?
The number one thing on my bucket list is when my son turns 18 , I want to go do an Ironman Ironman Because he's an incredible swimmer and he loves to run and he loves to ride his bike and he loves all this crazy mountain shit that I do , cause I've done a half Ironman with my dad .
He's 70 , but to do an Ironman with my son when he's 18 would be like incredible and I wanna go somewhere like New Zealand or some . I don't wanna just go to like Arizona , I wanna go to some awesome , awesome place and race with them .
Okay , Now , since you're around mountains , are you ever gonna conquer a mountain ?
Like dude . I gotta be honest with you , man . It doesn't do anything for me . My dad used to climb mountains . He climbed Mount Hood and climbed Mount Rainier . It doesn't do anything for me , i- .
I'm gonna call bullshit on the phone . I'm calling you out , man I you conquer Mount , you conquer St Helens . And then tell me how you feel when you're up there .
You get the same feeling . Maybe it's because I've never done it , I don't know how , and I always on my Instagram . I always write , never say , never Like . I mean it might change .
It's the same . And I'm dude , I'm gonna cuss man because I conquer mountains , because , dude it may . It's a feeling like no other man . It's a feeling of accomplishment . It's a feeling that , like dude , like you got it From you know all the adversity that anyone has overcome .
Man , there's no feeling like it , and with you , just a person like myself , to going 11,000 top of you know Oregon or 14 going out , you know Rainier or Whitney . There's no other feeling like once you get that , you're gonna be hooked , man . So think about it , think about a mountain , conquer it . And then you got to Instagram me , dude .
Dude you might be . I mean never say never dude , I might just do it and just be hooked on that . I have no idea . I just know that right now , at this point in time , I am just captivated by these races , these running races . But I know once I do them , I'm gonna need something else . I'm always gonna need something else . So I will keep that in mind .
Those mountains are good training . That's all Dude . If I summit a , mountain .
You can count on me letting you know . I'll reach out to you , dude , and I'll say , like you're the one that told me to do it , I will remember that , Dude do it , do it , gosh , all right .
So I know what you're doing . The rest of the season , next season , you're doing coca-dona . Are you gonna do anything else ? That's bigger .
Either not bigger coca-dona , and then either like Bigfoot 200 or Oregon 200 . Okay , I wanna do two 200s next year . Yeah , the .
Oregon 200 , that's new man and it's just ah .
I got a couple of friends doing it and I'm gonna all track them and see how it goes , and then after that I just wanna do the triple crown , like that's the thing for me .
All right , almost done . Yeah , gotta ask the last question before I tell us off . Okay , or send us off , not tell us Ah it's just the same thing . What pumps you up man in a day , any given day ? What pumps you up man ?
Man like so if someone , cause I go on Instagram in the morning and I go on Instagram at night , I don't go on Instagram during the day . And if someone messages me and says , hey , like I'm doing this because of you , I saw you doing this , I'm doing this , I'm doing like that shit like pumps me up , dude .
Like seeing something that I do have a direct effect on what someone else is doing in their life and that makes me wanna do more , like I gotta do something bigger , something more . I gotta keep trying to resonate with people .
Like that I , that's just like just me , I have impact on what someone is doing with their day as far as like trying to reach their potential . Like that shit pumps me up .
And also like just seeing like how far I can go in a day or how much I can do , or just something like that , dude , but just that waking up in the morning and like seeing that , or like somebody I don't know takes me in something and is like , hey , man , like this reminds me of you , or like I read that you wrote this and then this is what I thought
of it and it's like that . Like that is fucking powerful stuff .
Race day . Do you get hyped , do you hype yourself up or are you in a Zen state of mind and I'm pretty .
I'm pretty mellow dude , like I don't I'm I . I because I've done like a lot of races , like I've gotten to a place where , like I'm I mean , I can sleep the night before .
I'm pretty mellow I because I'm just I'm so happy to be there , like I'm so grateful that like I get to be there , because there's like , with this disease and stuff , like there's some people that can't and there are like sometimes I think like you shouldn't even be out here , dude , even at like a 50 mile race , and I'm just so grateful to be there and like
I'm just so excited to spend the day doing that or the days doing that . I don't ever , I don't ever get to like hyped up anymore . I was fucking hyped up for Coca-dona , though , dude . I was thinking about that today . Walking up to that start line was like the most electric feeling I've ever felt at a race . It was incredible .
Yeah , I almost forgot this one . Yeah , I want to ask you , tell , or just mention OutRunner what is OutRunner and what does it mean to you ? Man ?
So OutRunner is an idea that kind of me and Mac kind of came up with , of like we have never really like fit in or had like a sense of like belonging to , like the status quo .
Outrunner's was just like an idea that we kind of like turned into like a way of thinking or a way we want to do things where , like , we don't fit into the box , we don't follow the crowd , we do things our way and maybe it doesn't work .
Maybe it works , but all we know is that like we're not stopping and then we're like we should try and turn this way of thinking into a brand where people are buying . They're not just buying like a hat or like we're going to make a shirt . I'm going to make some shirts .
¶ Support for Determined Individuals
A puffer hat , like I've .
Yeah , dude , yeah , I run it .
No , you're buying like an idea or like a way of thinking is , and it's like I'm artistic , so it's like those are fun projects for me and then I so that's kind of the OutRunner thing and it's like if you don't try , like you're never going to know , like maybe it won't turn into anything , maybe it'll turn into something big , I don't know .
But it's like that's how things start is you just start with an idea and you just kind of build from there . And it's like I sold two hats today and somebody else wants to order one . I think I only have like two sitting up there and it's like it's really cool . I want a puffer hat , dude . I'll look into it . I'll look into it . So that's out .
That's kind of what OutRunners is . It's very much in like the very smallest stage right now . And but I things like that they take time . They take a lot of time . Like years . This is like a going to take years to build . But just like anything else that like I decided that I want to do , like I'm committed to it , like that's what I want to do .
And once you start like seeing some support from the community , or like people like , hey , this is bad ass , I want one Like it , gives you that reason to keep doing it .
How far booked are you tattoo wise ?
Um so week , weekdays are a couple months and weekends are like three or four months , and that's about as far out as I like to get let my calendar go , because that way I can still do a lot of the things I want to do .
Gotcha . I was going to ask you hey , if I show up , you hook me up . Yeah , I'll pay , I'll pay .
I'll just say hey , yeah , dude , I love yeah , and I've started like tattooing , like um , like other , like people in the running community , here in the triathlon community or and it's like really cool and actually these last couple of days I've been thinking about putting my tattoo stuff on my do , as is stuff , and kind of merging it into one to see who would
want to get tattooed , um , but then it's like I kind of like to keep them separate , so I don't , I don't know .
Yeah , I got you . Yeah , so I haven't done this in a while , man , but I wrote this before we , we had our meeting and I hope I hope you believe me and I hope you know it comes from the harder Right . A lot of the listeners will be like , oh shit , Nick's at it again , but eight .
I want you to know , man , how much you mean to your fan base , the crowd , the people who believe in you , All right . So I just want you to know . I haven't done this in a while . Take as is , and if you don't do , then you know what you can stick that tamp on somewhere .
