Mike Dell's world for November 3rd, 2023. And today, I know some of you have been here with me a long time and probably know all of this, but some of you might be new because of Na Pod, Pomo 23. So I, I kinda wanted to go through my podcast history. You know, I started podcasting. I near, as I could tell, April of 20 0 5 2, 2005 . I guess, uh, that date is a little bit fluid because I can't find my first so many episodes. So if anybody out there has OID report number one,
that's, uh, that, that's the one I'm looking for. I don't have it. I think mine, what I do have starts at about episode 30. So I started out, I lived in a little town called Lake Ann, Michigan, that's about, uh, 20 miles west of where I'm at here in Traverse City, Michigan. Now I'm on the east side of Traverse City, and Lake Ann is on the west side and 15 miles out. But I digress. And, uh, lake Ann is in what's known as Benzene County, Michigan.
That's the smallest county in Michigan by population and by land area. So it's a pretty sparsely populated out in the woods. And so my podcast, this one started out as the OID report 'cause the, uh, county people tend to call themselves benzo. I did not know that It was also a class of drugs . So funny thing there. But, uh, about episode 50 ish, I decided to change it to Mike Dell's world. It's really, this podcast has always been about nothing in particular,
just what's going on in my world. So why not Mike Dell's world? I talk a lot about Michigan. I talk about cars, I talk about airplanes. I talk about whatever strikes my fancy from time to time. So it's really a show about nothing which I like. You know, it's, it's, it's therapy. You know, I have other podcasts that I do that are, uh, more professional, like a podcast insider that I do for my, uh, employer, a blueberry podcasting. And that one I do weekly.
This one I do very weekly , but I figured for Nepo Pomo, we'll, uh, we'll kick out a few episodes, uh, 30 hopefully is the goal. But, uh, yeah, I started way, started out way back when, and that was when you had to sort hand roll the RSS feed. You, uh, had to find a place to put the, uh, the audio files, MP threes. And, and that's always been the case. MP threes. Now you. Can do M four a's and all that stuff. But anyway, it was one of the, uh, first 100 podcasters or thereabouts.
And the first podcast conference I went to in 2006 in Ontario, California, the Portable media Expo, it was like an old family reunion. 'cause all the podcasters were there, all of them. Everybody knew everybody. Uh, everybody listened to everybody. It, it was a whole different vibe than, than now, you know. Now there's between, you know, depending on who you listen to, there's between two and 5 million podcasts out there now. There's really probably 200 to 300,000 active podcasts,
this being one of them. Periodically . But, uh, yeah, I, I worked, you know, I worked on the show. I, I did, you know, I never was really consistent, and I only have 390 episodes, but I did have some phone in episodes. There was a, a, an outfit called Garage Band at, at the time where you could, uh, just dial up a phone number, talk into the phone and hang up, and it would pu publish an episode. I use that for a while,
and those aren't numbered. So there's probably more out there than just the, uh, 390 that I claim. But, so I, I did that for a while. And then, uh, I moved to a company called Pod Show. Pod Show was a company by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom. Uh, their, their whole thing was Quit your day job. You know, at the time, I had a day job and, you know, they were gonna bring money into podcasting and let you quit your day job. And that worked for a few years. Uh,
but free hosting is a bad business model. And all, all along this time, I, I, I knew the people that that started Raw Voice Incorporated. Raw Voice is the parent company of Blueberry podcasting, now, my employer. But, uh, that first conference, I met those guys and, uh, you know, we're hanging around them a bit every time we'd go to conferences and whatnot. And, and so in 2009, I, uh,
switched my hosting from what was called MEO at the time. Uh, 'cause pod show had turned into meo and then MEO tried to compete with, uh, YouTube, and now they no longer exist, but around 2000, I think probably 2008 actually, I moved to Blueberry hosting and was a customer at Blueberry for a little while. And then I got hired on Part-time as a contractor doing tech support. And, you know,
I would just do email tech support when I had time. And the job I had, I would push a button and then wait an hour for something to happen and then push another button. And. So I could do that at my day job. And, uh, still, you know, keep up with support. And did that for quite a while, going to conferences and, and whatnot. And I always had this show, and I've had, I tried a lot of different shows. You know, I'm the king of, uh, pod Fade. Uh, we did What's Up With That,
with Jim Farley. Did, uh, uh, aviation History Today, uh, which was a daily for a while. Then we did aviation History this week because Daily was hard, . And then also did, uh, strange Today, which was a history, uh, with Strange News, uh, on that day. Did that for a while. It was a daily, uh, did the Traverse City Weather Brief, which was a daily weather report that, uh, I did that for quite a while. It was, that was actually pretty easy. It was a,
a rip and read about two minutes publish done. And I had that on the, uh, Amazon Talking Tubes and the, uh, Google talking speakers and never did get it on the Apple one. 'cause Apple's not that popular in that genre. Anyway, uh, what other ones I've, I've, I've tried a lot. I had Geek of the North. I had, uh, oh, golly, uh, fast food history. I see a theme here. I, I go at things for a while, then Stop 'em.
So this one's been the one that's been carrying me through, uh, that can say that I'm a podcaster and of course, podcast Insider as well. And, uh, between those two shows, uh, I still am a podcaster, although infrequently on this one sometimes. And I always have ideas of, uh, oh, I wanna do a podcast about that. And then I remember how much is involved in starting a podcast.
It's not particularly hard, but it's just, you know, to do something of quality takes a little more effort than just, uh, rip and read or, uh, whatever live to the hard drive. That was, uh, that was another big thing back in the day. But suffices to say, I've been around podcasting a long time. I've been working full-time for, uh, raw Voice now for, or blueberry for, uh, I dunno, 5, 7, 7 years, eight years, something like that. And I'm the, uh, part, part owner. And, uh, and, uh,
yeah, it's going swimmingly. I work in a, a shed in my backyard and, uh, have a 45 foot commute out my back door. And, uh, yeah, life is good. But, so that's kind of the, the brief history. I figure all told, I've probably created and published 2,500 episodes in one form or another. And I've guested on several podcasts and guest hosted some podcasts. I guest hosted, uh, geek News Central before, uh, for Todd, uh, who's also the CEO of Blueberry and Raw Voice.
And speaking of which, uh, guesting on shows tomorrow afternoon, uh, I'm gonna be on the Podcasting 2.0 show with, uh, Adam Curry, the inventor of podcasting, or co-inventor of podcasting, and Dave Jones, the Pod Sage. And, uh, Todd and I are gonna be guests on the Podcasting 2.0 show. And you won't find Podcasting 2.0 on Spotify. You won't find it on Apple, or you might find it on Apple if somebody stuck it in there. But, uh, they didn't put it there themselves.
And Podcasting 2.0 is kind of a big thing, uh, these days, in my humble opinion. If you want to read all about it, go to podcast index.org. And they have a lot of, lot of things. Actually, I should say it's today. 'cause I'm, I'm recording a day ahead, so this is actually November 2nd, but I will be on November 3rd.
And if you download either Fountain or Pod verse and I, and there's probably some other ones, uh, from the, uh, podcast apps.com page, and then subscribe to Podcasting 2.0, you'll get a, a notice about, uh, two o'clock, 1 30, 2 o'clock that, uh, podcasting 2.0 is live, and that is live. We're live streaming it. So you'll get a notice there, and then you hit, uh, play and you're listening live to, uh, us recording that show. And then it'll be put out later as a regular podcast in an RSS feed.
But that's part of the Podcasting 2.0 stuff. So if you get on a newer app like Pod Verse or Fountain or I don't know, there's, there's a bunch of 'em. I'll have a link to that page in the show notes [email protected]. But, uh, yeah, the, the old legacy apps and almost podcast apps like Spotify, that's not really a podcast app. I don't believe this show's in Spotify,
but if it is, I didn't put it there. And, uh, I am an Apple, although looking at my stats for this show, most of you guys are using Overcast or casts or, you know, some, some of those better apps, uh, than, you know, like Spotify is a music app. They should, you know, they're, they're great for music, not so great for podcasting. Uh, the whole new YouTube thing I'm gonna do an episode about. In fact, probably tomorrow I'm gonna do an episode explaining YouTube big air quotes,
podcasts, . 'cause they're not, but Google seems to think they are. Anyway, with that, I don't want to keep you too long. I'm sure you got lots of shows to listen to. We'll catch you tomorrow. Thanks for listening.
